Re: [lace] Re "Hide" some feeback
But why would it be just a surname? This is not normal on old bobbins - christian or full names yes but not a surname alone. Unless it is someone famous - I have one inscribed Gladston (sic) after the 19th century English Prime Minister. A quick search in one of my bobbin databases (of 640 names only) I found the ones below - some from my own collection, others found. ALMA-The battle for the River Alma ARCHER- ? HIGGINS- ? MASON- Trade bobbin. PRINCE- Royal title or maybe a horse!! RECKLES-Trade bobbin WAINRIGHT - Henry Wainright who committed a rather gruesome murder in the east end of London. LESTER-Trade bobbin Diana in Northamptonshire - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. The international phonetic alphabet was not standardised until 1956 throughout the world. Before that time it depended on who was speaking, where they came from and where they learned the alphabet!! The British Royal Navy had one, a different one for the Army in the first world war, American military was different again... etc In fact I can remember in the '60's in the UK, the international operators used major cities worldwide as a phonetic code... although the code wasn't in use until the early days of Marconi after all, he made the first international radio transmission from Poldhu Point in Cornwall to St John's Bay, Newfoundland! There you are a little bit of useless history!! Sue in East Yorkshire On 14 Jan 2011, at 09:23, laceandb...@aol.com wrote: I have this all the time as my surname is Tinch - quite unusual. Family history research has also led us to hunt out many versions of the same sound but different spellings, if you have someone who cannot read or write they have no idea how its spelled and also taking accents into account it must be quite hard. Our name gets written with an i, or an a rather than u in it so these things can happen easily. I have a bobbin my sister decorated for me several years ago with info about my parents, the one for my dad has musical notes on, as he had a band, the one for my Mum has 6 initials on it, one for each of her 6 children. I wonder if there will be a Jeri in the future wondering what it might mean, . Just to point out that Hide isn't really a mis-spelling of Hyde, it's a phonetic spelling. When it is possible that neither the bobbin maker or lacemaker would have reached 21st century requirements for literacy (and let's face it, that level isn't very high) then Hide is perfectly acceptable. Even in the Parish records, where would assume the parish clerk would most likely be fairly well educated, the spellings change according to what the name was heard as. If the person registering the event couldn't read, they weren't in a position to say. I have this all the time as my surname is Tinch - quite unusual. It gets written as Linch, Pinch or Finch. NO, T for Tango. Jacquie in Licolnshire - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com

[lace] Re "Hide" some feeback
Firstly... thank you. Miss-spellings I really feel for. Even with a spellchecker I make hideous spelling mistakes! So HIDE=HYDE? OK lets move on. I am beginning to get hooked on this "ancestry" thing. A few good folks have sent me some good stuff on names. I love it... thank you I love the idea of a cryptic H...ID...E... That really sets my imagination going! Somehow I doubt it. What a shame! The suggestion that really gets me going is.. "HIDE" is the first bobbin, and out there somewhere is a bobbin that is inscribed "and SEEK". I just love that persons imagination Special putty medal for the first person to find a bobbin inscribed "and SEEK"! I think I am safe! You are a great bunch of folks and you give me such help and such joy that you even bother with my crazy notions! I rarely communicate to "lace" without a smile on my face!. Unless I hear otherwise I am going to give the medal to.wait while I open the envelope. *HIDE is a miss spelling of HYDE.* That in itself raises a few issues. To be honest... so many of the problems we have with bobbin history would be solved if we lived in that community and at that time. But it is fun working on it.. don't you think? Excuse me while I work on my TARDIS. Thanks again - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
