At least I wish I did, because as Ita Aber, whom I have known for 40 years, says in her article, the construction of it is something of a secret. I even have the DVD that the Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Needlework produced about it, which I highly recommend. Ita Aber is the authority on this as far as I am concerned and her article sums up all I know about it, and more. I would say that not a year goes by that someone doesn't inquire about it at the museum. Some of it looks like bobbin lace done in metallic thread. But other examples I am unable to relate to bobbin lace. The Jewish Museum in Prague has quite a collection, and perhaps some time spent searching their on-line collection would be fruitful to those who want to know what it looks like. Unfortunately the name has many alternative spellings which makes it hard. The Jewish Museum in Prague has also published a catalogue with photos in it. I think that the OIDFA conference in Prague was able to see it, as an attendee was kind enough to send me the catalogue. I feel certain that the Jewish Museum in New York has some and probably also the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. There does appear to be a set up of the gorm on display at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem which Ita had filmed in action. the thread hangs on spools that are suspended from a bar over the work, making it sort of the reverse of a typically lace pillow. I imagine that there is a reason for this relating to the properties of metal thread. It is difficult to fully understand how it is done, partially because those who can do it don't want it to be filmed due to considerations of secrets of the trade. Sorry, I did not have time to read the whole thread. Just to mention: In 2002 we had an exhibition in the 'Schlossbergmuseum Chemnitz' (Saxonia, Germany): Schätze des jüdischen Galizien (Treausres of Jewish Galicia), with exhibits from L'viv (Ukraine). It was a pleasure to see lots of collars with Spanier arbeit and a stool where this was worked with. It is now in the Jewish Museum of Ethnography and aplied arts in L'viv. Dear Vicki, Thanks for going to the trouble to resend. That is a fascinating article, and raises all sorts of questions. As a born and bred New Yorker, (yes, that explains a lot) I consider myself half Yiddish by association. I grew up in an overwhelmingly Jewish neighborhood in Queens, and there was no mention of any such thing. Devon, are you home, and can you give information on this aspect of lace in New York? I did not go to synagogue for the high holy days, of course, being Christian, so I don't know what was shown, but it had to be made somewhere. New York Jewish immigrants on the whole where from the early 1900's, pre Holocaust, and usually from Poland or Russia. Was Spanier Arbeit not done there? What does it look like? The article does not include pictures. How common is it now? I assume it adorned the Torah covers? Lyn from Lancaster, where it's spring. [lace] Information Lace Guild members only - April issue of Lace
Apologies to all Lace Guild members, our printer has had some problems with the April issue of Lace, they have been working very hard to resolve these problems over the last couple of weeks. The magazine is now printed, stapled and folded (it was the stapling causing the problems) but unfortunately the magazine is about a week late getting to the mailing house (for UK distribution) and The Hollies (for delivery outside the UK). The mailing house and The Hollies are working to get your magazines out to you as soon as possible but it will be arriving slightly later than normal. Once again apologies for the delay we are working with our printer on ensuring there arent similar problems with future issues. If you have friends who are Lace Guild members but not members of Arachne please could you forward this message on to them. Hello Tamar, if you only visit Berlin I am not the right person. There are some lacemakers hope they read your mail. But if you also visit Hamburg, which is not so far away, we could try to make an appointment. Re: [lace] information?
Perhaps make one yourself? The hardest part would be the core. Wind it tightly wind a too hot washsed and dried (to felt it) woolen blanket, or undercarpet of natuaral fibers. A cover cloth with a tight rope through the seams on either side. does that make any sense? I heard/read somewhere about a person who made her own. She used the largest automotive air filter of the circular kind that she could find, then padded it to receive the pins, and wrapped the whole thing. I think it was a bit smaller than the pillow shown in a past OIDFA publication. Good luck with your quest. There must be some other things in our current society that would make a sturdy circular base. [lace] Information on Peru (MP)
Hi, In a couple weeks my son is leaving for Peru. He will be hiking in the Macho Pechu (Sic) area. He will also spend a couple days doing a little sight seeing, also. So my question to any one who might know the area; Is there anything lace related that he might be able to find to bring back to me? Since I'll be babysitting his big dog, I told him, he had to bring back something for me. I know they do a lot of weaving and knitting there, but I have never heard of any kind of lace from there. Would they have any thread stores? I'm sure there's plenty of yarn but I don't care for that for tatting or lacemaking. I know we have lacers from all over the world on the different lists but I don't recall anyone saying they were from Peru. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Patsy A. [lace] Information on Peru (MP)
I haven't been in Peru for many years, but I've never heard of lace there. Weaving, yes. Items made from llama or alpaca wool or fur, yes. Lace, no. As far as I know, the only lace in South America is in northern Brazil and Paraguay. Although, about 10 years ago, I heard that there were some lacemakers in an outer suburb of Santiago, Chile. Ask him to bring you back some weaving. IMHO, the second best weaving in Latin America, after Guatemala. On Thursday, September 8, 2005, at 05:23 PM, Patsy A. Dear Magda -- I think what Tamara was referring to is a three-day workshop on beginning Mechlin, to be given by Ulrike Loehr on July 31, and August 1st and 2nd. This is a sponsored workshop of the Chesapeake Region Lace Guild, and the cost is $100. As non-members have to pay an additional $8 to take the workshop; and as it costs only $8 to become a member of the CRLG, isn't it obvious that non-members should hurry up and JOIN? Go to the web site of the Chesapeake Region Lace Guild, and it will tell you all about it. -- Aurelia - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
