A single bedspread? A throw? Cot blanket? Pram blanket? Something to keep your knees and feet warm in the winter? A long time ago, when my children were small, I made three bedspreads, in squares, in colours to suit each child. One was in blues and greens, one in browns and oranges and the third one was red, with two adjacent stripes in white, to signify the Number 11 that was used by George Best. The blue and green one became infested with cat fleas while the cats were in a cattery, and my daughter put the bedspread into a boil wash, to destroy the fleas. Unfortunately, it was pure wool, so the result was tragic! Hi everyone I'm working on a beds hankerchief edging (pattern 11 from Barbara Underwood's 20 lessons) at the moment, and I've got a piece of bucks point in black silk (to go on Pauline's pincushion) on another pillow which I need to get back to while the evenings are light enough ... My best (worst?) UFO is the crochet lace bedspread I started making in my teens (I can't remember exactly what year but it must have been about 1976 /77), which has been sitting upstairs in a cupboard for the last twenty years, since I discovered bobbin lacemaking (we all use duvets now anyway). Maybe I should get it out and do a bit more. Mind you,I don't have enough thread to finish it, and don't know whether that particular shade of variegated blue is still available -can anyone think of a use for half a bedspread? Beth, you've just reminded me - I started a crochet tablecloth before we were married nearly 39 years ago! I finished a 36 square one, then decided to add more motifs to make it fit the dining table, which it nearly does, but then I changed my square table to a round one! Than you could make very modern sleeves for a blouse or a dress, take it with one of the corner in the middle of the shoulder and sew on the two sides going from this point and ready is it. Hi there I am currently trying to finish three half gloves for a wedding on 10th July. I have finished two and am working furiously on the third. The gloves have a hand made ring which is joined to a piece of lace which comes over the back of the hand and joins to a lace wrist band. This is my first real try at designing and has been quite a challenge but the Bride is pleased with my efforts so far - which is a relief! It's interesting to hear what everyone is working on just now, I'm working on pattern2 : handkerchief corner motif, from Introduction to Honiton Lace by Susanne Thompson. I've done the outline and once my head cold from hell has departed I'll start the fillings. I must say once I invested in a pair of reading glasses and jettisoned the vari focals I could actually see what I was doing I started to enjoy myself. Oh for perfect eyesight. I'm impressed by all that is being done - most of it beyond me by the sound of it. I have two piesec on pillows: a wide insertion based on the Greek key pattern by Atkinson; and a circular insertion designed by Jenny Hester for a UFO candle holder. I also have in progress a cross stitch lion's head on a T-shirt (using waste canvas) for an eleventh birthday. However, all is on hold thanks to tendonitis which I have had since before Easter. Does anyone have any helpful hints about dealing with this condition? I am taking stron anti-inflammatary pills which don't do much in terms of immediate pain relief and so far haven't made any general improvement. I am also wearing a tubigrip especially when driving and I have a pair of Handeze gloves. Is ther anything else I can do? Anneke, Sorry to hear about your wrist, but isn't it nice to just sit and go through all the books we collect. Hi Bev and all, I enjoy reading all your emails about all the laces in progress. Due to my fractured wrist I am not making any lace at all at the moment, but I am looking through all my lace books, something I normally never seem to have the time for, and making plans for what to work after my piano runner Myself, I have been mostly Lace Knitting lately. Some one gave the Agency I work for over 200 skeins of acrylic yarn and I am making a baby blanket right now. Plan to do some hats and maybe mittens for Christmas. (I work for a small Social Services Agency.) I did discover Lenka's Wire Angel almost ready to come off the pillow so will finish that up -maybe that is the pillow I will take to Prague. and last Sat. at our Guild meeting I started the world's smallest handkerchief edging (fabric will be about 2 inches sq.). It is a lesson in turning corners but with an new style beginning -from The Beginning of the End. I need to measure the edging on another pillow and see if it is enough to do a pair of pillow cases to enter into the local fairs. I know it is close. I really should inventory all my pillows and see what else is in the works. All this and try to get the house in shape to leave for two weeks. Where will I find the time. What lace(s) are you working on now? Hi Bev and all, I work on - a Danish pattern Flugten til Amerika (=The escape to America) by Aase Nilsson. It is a picture with a girl and a boy and I make it as gift. It is made in colour and I use Bockens linen 60/2. - a Celtic wallhanging in torchon design by Jenny Hester (who I think is lurking). It is worked in white thread with gimps outline the knots. When ready it will be a fringe of beads matching the gimps. - on my Honiton pillow I have the 3rd pattern in Cynthia Voysey's book A practical Guide. - last but not least I work on a pattern in Bucks Point called Rosemary by Geraldine Stott. It is a hexagonal mat and I'm fine until I reach the place to turn... I'm not giving up but I nearly throw the pillow in the wall the other day as I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I will go back soon and look at it again. I also got the beading bug and am making an amulet bag. I do not write often but I guess that survey is contagious! Like usual for me, I have only one bobbin lace work going on. It is a swedish torchon 'Girlang' with square tallies. I have 30 pairs with Bockens linen #60/2 and one thread of 18/5 linen as gimp. I work on my Christina pillow and it is very relaxing to do. Besides, I am also making a necklace with Artistic wire #24 in spool knitting and I add beads. These necklaces are very popular in my circle these days and they have a very lacey look. Quick answer in between travels and jet lag! I am currently working on 4 projects (at different times of day) 1 a bobbin lace scarf in cotton perle 8 from an enlarged Binche pattern 2 a beaded necklace which I started 4 years ago, but have now decided to finish 3 a quilted jacket, which will also have bobbin lace on it, when the scarf pillow is free to use again 4 some crocheted hats (good for working on flights). Our church makes hats and donates them to a shelter in downtown Chicago in winter. There are a few ufos around also! I've got Marianne Kinsel's Rose of England Tea cloth on the needles. Knitted lace is my lace of choice. I'm 129 rows of 152 rows down, but I just agreed to doing lace for a wedding hankie for the last week of August. So what I'm /really/ doing is swatching up edging patterns and trying to find one that I like and speaks to be before I do 50 some odd inches of it. I lucked into a sale of the Valdani, which might have numbered days - I had bought it from aquilt shop, but they told me they won't stock it again because of slubs. Yes, it has slubs - but otherwise is a lovely thread to work with. I can see that the slubbing would cause problems for machine embroidery/quilting. Do, please, respond to the survey. Thanks, Bev - for starting an interesting thread that helps get us out of our summer doldrums! I confess that I'm doing more quilting than lacemaking at the moment - a fact that is attributed to my happy part-time employment in a quilt shop where I can make up shop samples to my heart's content - and not have to buy the fabric! Eventually, after the quilt has been on display for a while, I'll be able to bring it (them) home for keeps (I'm working on my second quilt, having done the first in just a few days last month. This one is significantly more difficult!!) But I do get back to my pillow several times a week! I'm currently working on panel #1 from HOOP - the fabulous Binche piece which was worked to raise money for Cancer research. This section is tiny - only about 1.5 x maybe 3... but it's worked in 140/2 cotton, and I currently have 148 bobbins on the pillow. It's not so difficult as it is tedious (because of the tiny scale) but I thrive on that kind of work, and I'm enjoying it immensely! So far, I've found the diagram to be excellent - accurate and easy to read. Those are the main things I want in a diagram!! I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of Beryl Maw's new pattern pack! I am confident that once that's in my hands, I'll spend less time quilting, more time making lace!! I'm working a 3 wide circular Bucks edgingI think the pattern came from a Lace magazine at least 15 years ago! I actually worked the piece some 10 or more years ago, but wasn't happy with the join, so always promised myself I'd re-work it one day. When mounted, it makes a mat approx 10 across.
