[lace-chat] Help with downloads on AOL

2015-02-14 Thread Jacquie Tinch
Please PM me the answers as I am not currently subscribed to Chat Digest.

I'm sure there must be someone on Arachne running on Windows 8 and AOL who
might be able to help me. I've just bought a new lap top and although I have
now worked out how to access my AOL account and emails, I have obviously got
something wrong as I can't open any attachments. As I am accessing AOL via
Google, I am assuming it is the latest version of AOL. It's certainly very
different to the version on my old PC which was about 10 years old.

When I open a post with an Attachment, there is a little green bar for each
attached item on the top left of the page, just under the subject, with the
details of the name and size of the attachment. Logically clicking on this
should open the attachment but nothing happens at all. This is completely
regardless of the format of the attachment. It's not that I can't read the
attachment once open, I can't open them at all; the button bars don't seem to
be live.

I have also tried to make AOL my homepage which is what I had on my PC; when I
click on the 'Make AOL your homepage' option, I get a box which says they see I
am using Internet Explorer as my homepage, click here to change to AOL and
again, nothing happens.

Finally, how to I get an icon for my start page so I don't have to access AOL
via Google?

Any help in any of these problems would be greatly appreciated.

[lace-chat] Help Please, from all you computer literates ...

2009-10-23 Thread Carol
Hi All,

I am hoping for some help!

Before he passed away after last Christmas, my husband updated our address
lists, for Christmas cards, letters, birthday, anniversaries etc. However,
in his wisdom, he password-protected it, so I can't access the wretched lists.
I have tried all the passwords he used, but as yet, no joy! Does anyone
have any suggestions? My son assures me that breaking the password is NOT
the same as breaking the computer, but I am very much inclined to the
latter...

Take care of yourselves, and I will hope for some good advice, for which I
thank you all in advance.

Whilst I agree with most of what Joy says, if the finished size really
matters you need to make a tension square, the same as you would for
knitting.

If you Google crochet hook conversion you'll find lots of charts
including

http://www.vintage-crafts-patterns-designs.com/crochet-hook.html
same if you want to find knitting needle conversion charts.

The patterns are all metric or USA.

My USA#8 crochet hook is 1.5mm metric -- but you don't
need no steenking conversion chart. Just try hooks on
your selected thread until you find one that the thread
just fills.

When you use an oversize hook to loosen your tension,
you don't need the same hook the designer used -- your
tension isn't his tension.

The only time you need to pay attention to the arbitrary
numbers on the hooks is when you switch from one hook to
another and want the two hooks to match.

Isn't that it, though? The whole little rhyme has BL references:

One, two buckle my shoe (get ready for school - lace school)
Three four out the door (going there)
Five six pick up sticks (the bobbins)
Seven eight lay them straight (tension?!)
Nine ten, a big fat hen (pin)
Eleven twelve dig and delve (hm, don't know the collection)
Thirteen fourteen maids a courting (more with bobbin pairs...)
Fifteen sixteen (I forget)
Seventeen eighteen maids a-waiting
Nineteen twenty that's a-plenty
(end of repeat?)

something like that anyway!

I am going out on a limb here because I usually get reprimanded for anything
that is spiritual. Five years ago I lost a son (27) to drugs, well this past

[lace-chat] Help with French Lace Museums

2007-02-02 Thread Sam and Denise
Dear List,

I've been working on a City Guilds in embroidery for many years here in
the U.S. My tutor, Gail Harker (author of several good books on machine
embroidery) leads a tour of her U.S. and Canadian students to England each
summer, and the last few years this has included crossing the channel to see
the Bayeux Tapestry. For this summer's trip she's thinking of spending a bit
more time in Normandy, with visits to Alencon or Argentan, and has asked me,
her only old lacemaker, for any information I have on museums or lace related
events in Normandy. But I've never had the pleasure of visiting Normandy, my
links to the museum in Alencon no longer seem to work, and Google has been
less than inspiring. So am asking for your help.

Gail is asking for the following:

1. Information on any museums with good needlelace collections (these are
embroidery students) within a hour or two driving distance of Bayeux. Museum
web sites would be wonderful, or a telephone number or address.

2. Any lace or embroidery related demonstrations, workshops, festival, or
other activities in Normandy during the first few weeks of October, 2007.

3. A person who might act as a lace guide in Normandy for a day.

Many thanks for any help you can provide,

Denise Liberio

[lace-chat] Help

2004-11-12 Thread Jacqui
Hello to all

I have been reading about all your spider and must say that I think I am
begining to know a bit about all of youl.

I have a favour to ask. I took up bobbin lace making in May this year and
am now trying to teach some friends this art. I am looking for simple
instructions, and prickings that do not carry a copyright (I will still
reference the source material) as I am trying to get people interested and
the books here (in South Africa) are very expensive if you are not going to
continue with the craft.

I also have a question. In some case messages have been brought over from
lace is this another site?

Regards and thanks

[lace-chat] Help needed - Post from USA to UK.

2004-06-30 Thread Laceandbits
Is there an American arachne who would be kind enough to post on a booklet
that my partner bought on e-bay. It is a vintage tractor manual, not very thick
I believe. When he bought it he knew that the seller wouldn't post to the
UK, but for some reason they won't post to Canada either so we can't get it via
Malvary.

In return, either I will send some lace things (or anything else for that
matter) not available in/expensive in the States or, if preferred, Malvary can
send you US funds to repay you.

You may think it strange that he would buy something before he knew if he
could get it, but he collects (among other things) American Oliver tractors.
His first was bought new by his Dad in 1948 and he still has that, and also 4
others. This manual he has bought is for the cultivating equipment that hangs
underneath the row-crop style ones. We have two of these, plus a load of
bits of equipment, but because they are rare in this country the manuals are
even rarer, and if we could find one at all it would cost probably in excess of
50GBP. He got this one for about $12! And it might help him make usable
equipment out of the piles of parts that he picked up as a job lot.

If anyone can help, please contact me with your address and what you would
like in exchange.

Jacquie

WHAT A RELIEF!!

I was going to reply to the post yesterday, and then thought No, everyone
will think I've got a really weird family. I have never met anyone else who
knew about the witches and using egg shells as boats.

Jean - thank you for bring this to light - perhaps we are related somewhere
back in the relics of time. I have a lot of cousins on my grandmother's side
that I've never been able to track down.

Malvary - in Ottawa. I can now go off to work knowing that I'm not the only
person that has weird ancesters.

about postage. The Royal Mail is proposing changing its way of charging for post,
moving from charging by weight only to charging by size *and* weight. This
has horrified mail order firms with at least one, a film developing service,
reckoning it will go out of business as thits strenght is cheap processing witn
minimum postal costs. I imagine this will also affect magazine subscriptions.

Yet Alice tells me (one of the 3 message in the private box) there's

 but having
now received her Bank statement she finds that she has been charged twice!!
She has duly emailed the PRO letting them know etc.

We had similar happen in December last year - but in person, at a Little
Chef (roadside cafe chain). I thought they had put the card through
twice at the time, but wasn't certain. Then, in February, the amount
showed up on our statement (usually these things go through in a week at
most) - and then three weeks later the same amount appeared on our
statement. I keep close watch on the account, so when the second
transaction appeared I phoned the *bank* straight away and told them
what had happened. They said they would investigate, and write to me
with the outcome - which they did - they agreed the second payment was a
duplicate and refunded it to our account. The Little Chef then had 60
days to prove that the request for payment was genuine, in which case we
would have had to pay the amount, but obviously they were not able to do
so.

In general, if your bank is on your side, they have much more clout than
you do!

On Saturday, October 25, 2003, at 07:18 PM, David Collyer wrote:

Dear Friends,
I have been asked by my cousin to see if any of my bank of wisdom and
knowledge can help with her problem.

She recently ordered some old Wills from the UK Public Records Office and
paid for them with her credit card online. She got the Wills OK, but
having now received her Bank statement she finds that she has been charged
twice!! She has duly emailed the PRO letting them know etc. But they have
repeatedly ignored her emails. What she wants to know is how to take this
matter further, and who she should threaten them with - if you get my
drift.
Hello David

Providing she's absolutely sure she's paid twice, and there's no credit
showing on the next bank statement, and that she didn't order twice and get
two copies of each will, then she is entitled to her money back.

Having said that, mistakes do happen but the PRO should acknowledge her
emails and get it sorted out. If it was me, living here in England I'd do
the following:

1, Put the complaint in writing and send it by snail mail. If no reply
within a couple of weeks send it again and perhaps threaten with legal
action through the small claims court.

2, Send a copy of the letter to Trading Standards. Trading Standards
offices are subsiduries of the County Council or District Council. PRO Kew
comes under Surrey County Council.

3, Contact the credit card company. For transactions over 100GBP the
credit card company are equally liable along with the customer, for any
discrepancies. Whilst a few Wills probably didn't cost 100 pounds I'm sure
they would want to know about things that go wrong and aren't put right.

4, I think there could also be an issue with the bank that handles the
on-line transactions, maybe the credit card company would be able to help
with this too.

Let me know how things go
