Re: [LU] Fwd: VPN

2024-01-04 Thread Graham Longbottom
I am also achingly closer to having fibre installed.
Engineer came round to connect it on 2nd Jan and the blue string (with
which they pull the fibre through the conduit) broke halfway!

Leaving me with a 5 day hiatus while they try and rod it through 30m of
conduit to work out what happened/blocked it.

Despite that I have always used NordVPN who I used to recommend
unconditionally until last year when they did an ambush/auto renewal for a
year charging me more than the previous 3 years together!

However - having now switched off auto renewal - I'm back to a very good
price for 3 years.
So, I recommend never having auto renewal on with any VPN provider.
They're particularly good to renew on or around Black Friday.
The VPN is good, their app works well, and I have it embedded into a
firestick (behind Kodi) as well.
They're also Panama based so not subject to any US regulation who might
want to see what's going on in their VPN world

2020-07-13 Thread Graham Longbottom
You'd like to think that Bielsa could work his magic (that of getting the
best out of every player no matter where they start from) on Teemu Pukki as
well.
He looked great at the beginning of the prem season, but couldn't hit a
barn door now.
Surely he'll be available from Norwich soon...

Yep. Reading is fairly relaxed.
I an actually a Brentford member, as they were my immediate local team when
the family moved down from Leeds.
But one of these days they're going to notice I only go to one game a
season nowadays.
I shall miss Griffin park funnily.

Mk Don's a few years ago actually revoked a ticket and refunded me, as they
said they'd tied me up with Elland Road ticket database.
Fortunately their relegation means that's no longer a concern :-)

I try to do as many London/HC based games as poss, generally in Home seats.

Most recently Charlton, where I was with a gang of Charlton supporting
friends in any case, so apart from the jeering at the result, given our
dominant performance, it was fairly comfortable.
QPR and Brentford last year there were plenty of Leeds support in the home
areas - some wearing colours even.
Wouldn't do it at Millwall though.
I have become used to not reacting to Leeds goals, but still don't stand
for opposition ones.

Frustratingly, I can't get tickets for Luton, even though that's
geographically closest to home.
Even Luton supporting mates couldn't get extra's before it sold out.
Anyone with a spare - either end - please let me know, I'll be happy to

Probably the other club asking LUFC for confirmation of a name/address, so
not the LUFC database being shared per se
Under GDPR, security checking as part of a ticket transaction would be
deemed a legitimate purpose for using the data, so not prohibited.
Although the home club should be notifying the applicant that they're going
to do that somewhere in the Privacy Notice/Consent dialogue.

Re: [LU] LU: Bristol City away

2019-03-08 Thread Graham Longbottom
I used to get that a lot - not so much nowadays.
Same argument, that they'd checked Elland Road database and that was the
end of the matter.
I've had the same rejection from Brentford, MK Dons and others in the past.
So, yes - you have to look around for friends and family members to assist
Or - as I've done for Brentford and QPR - joined their supporters club
on-line first, and then they don't seem to bother checking.
Mind you sooner or later they're going to realise that I only ever buy
tickets for Brentfprd v. Leeds.

Generally easy to get tickets close to our fantastic wall-of-noise away
support. I wonder why the home fans don't like those...

For me Gordon Banks WAS goalkeeping in that era.
Even though I loved Sprake and Harvey, when playing schoolboy footie,
everyone would be Banks when in goal.

Lot more respect for the England team in those days, no matter who you

Re: [LU] nonLU - kodi

It certainly doesn't work without the VPN, (and sometimes not with it
either - the OpenVPN implementation is a bit flaky).
Kodi works fine - Sportsdevil in particular. Netflix works fine, BBC radio
works fine, Iplayer TV less so.

He's actually in Loupia (just outside Limoux), but most people only know
Carcassonne in the area (apart from the FEOTLs - French Expats on the List
- that is).
Very close to Alet-les-Bains which was the place they featured in hat BBC
article.

Kodi on a Firestick works well - and is cheap
I've got a couple set up for permanent use and one to take on hols if
required.
And gave one to my brother (who lives in Carcassonne nowadays) last
Christmas which is still working well without any maintenance after a year.
Plus, you get the usual apps (such as Netflix) in a handy format, if
prepared to stump up a few quid per month.

Takes someone knowledgeable to set them up, but easy enough to use
(assuming you think Kodi is easy to use - I can't get my wife to get the
hang of it).

Setting up VPNs on them is trickier - can be done _ I've got my NordVPN
working - but it's a faff,

Re: [LU] Nail your colours to the mast

2013-04-02 Thread Graham Longbottom
There are many managers I dislike personally (albeit purely on the basis of the
meeja as I don't know any of them personally), but I reckon I could learn to
love any manager who brought us success again, so that aspect never bothers
me.I want someone who has either proven they can create a run of success (NOT
take over a successful team at the top of their game), or shown they can
motivate whatever set of players they have in front of them - preferably both.

So notwithstanding the fact that the general assessment of Nigel Adkins was
twat - on the basis of what he did in a short managerial career - including
that incredible run of success at Saints, I would have snapped his arm off, and
told Warnock where to go. I think missing out on him is a real lost
opportunity. He had a great run of success, starting from a team largely
inherited and underperforming, and turned them into winners. Yes he had money
given, but by and large I think he spent wisely on underrated players, who
added to the team. Most Southampton fans I know were mortified when he was
sacked, although they seem to be getting over it now they're safe-ish.
On the same basis therefore, my choice would be to try and get Poyet. Not
proven yet, but shows promise, has done well with Brighton (although clearly
could do better) and is relatively young. Has been at and knows us as a club,
and was in my opinion the difference in the the fantastic 15 point season. I
always hated Wise (personally again), but put up with it due to results. When
it became clear (after he left) that Poyet was the magic behind that sequence
and the wheels subsequently came off, I was able happily to go back to hating
Wise, and would welcome Gus back. He's also not managed in prem, and therefore
is realistically likely to take the job if suitable incentivised. Unlike Rafa,
Mourhino etc. We are NOT going to attract them, so their performance is
irrelevant.
McDermott worked miracles with Reading - given the quality of the team he
started with, but I don't think he's shown how to get the best out of them
lately, so I'm not wildly impressed.
O'Neill, I can't make my mind up on. He's sort of a big beast so may have
some sort of motivating effect on the team (if he's still up for it after the
Mackems), but it may be that Robertson was the magic behind that partnership
too, so undecided. Having said that, anyone who helps take Sunderland down is
alright in my book. (To quote Da Rev - Is Bob Stokoe Dead yet?).If he was up
to it, I'd have him on the books as an advisor on a game by game basis for the
rest of the season, with a view to a potential post next season, while we wait
to see who becomes available. Lambert may well become available, and while if
he does, that will be a failure at Villa, his performance at Norwich was again
miraculous and sustained over a couple of seasons and promotions - especially
considering that he again did that in his first season with largely Brian
Gunn's team who, he hammered in the first game of that season, so I would say a
proven motivator of players. Can't put my finger on wha
t's going wrong for him at Villa though.
No-one else impresses me at the moment. I would take Grayson back, as I suspect
a large part of the issues he had were related to back-room stuff going on due
to Bates/Sale/Takeover. I think he was unlucky, and has unfinished business
with us. No idea whether he's COME back though given how he was treated.
G

(I don't believe in the Star Tyro syndrome, so Di Canio never excited me, and
the last thing we need at Elland Road is more volatility. Management by hand
grenade is most likely to blow our own legs off. Same for any great players,
wanting to jump in at the top level with no experience of managing at the dirty
end. Could never understand why anyone - even the barcodes - thought Shearer
could manage their team, given he had no track record whatsoever.)

Ah yes. List haiku competition. Only on the Leeds-list!

The results are poor.
New signings fail to impress.
Next year - the same league.

  From Wikipedia:
A Haiku in English is a short poem which uses imagistic language to
 convey
the essence of an experience of nature, or the season intuitively linked
 to
  the human condition

LUFC's performances this season cannot in any way be described as
 conveying
the essence of an experience of nature, so I presume that from the
 Wikipedia
definition we are talking about the latter, aka the season intuitively
  linked to the human condition?

The Haiku therefore as a summary for DRB is:

  haiku
The List Digest is long and arduous,
Our new signings are not so wondrous, so yea shall we endure the curse of
  the Malignant Stoat,
  I informed you thusly
  /haiku

For a definition of ' I informed you thusly', please read on from here,
 it's
  not available on Wikipedia:

Under normal circumstances I'd say I told you so. But, as I have told you
with such vehemence and frequency already, the phrase has lost all
 meaning.
Therefore, I will be replacing it with the phrase, I informed you thusly.

And, for all you pedantics out there, I kept the Haiku to the original 3
sentence rule applied by Mr Walmsley, if you consider each line to be a
 new
  sentence...

[LU] Whatever happened to Somma (sic)

2012-08-02 Thread Graham Longbottom
Not a commentary on the dreadful seasonal weather, but was expecting
to see the good Davide recovering/training/taking some part in the
pre-season by now.
But I can't recall seeing him mentioned anywhere.

Have I missed something? Is he more badly injured than originally thought?
Have we sold him on the quiet?

Was just thinking about him due to the gossip on strikers (McCormack
staying/Mackail-Smith maybe coming/Barndoor Billy going etc.). He
looked to have such promise. Including that fantastic goals to minutes
ratio, due to always coming on as a sub.

G

(p.s. I was always glad about us signing Huckerby - he used to do such
damage against us whenever we played Cov, I thought it was worth it
just to get him out of those games)

Today tomorrow will be very interesting

We have no news about the process of take over. But it was accepted theory
that Colin is the litmus test.
Last night's WACCOE TWITTER are alive with rumours that Colin is on his
 bike very soon.
The main problems are that the TWITTER rumour is from an agent in the know
[Thomas Brookes @tom_ifm ] the significance can be either that there is a
 T/O or the opposite!!!
I am loath to speculate right now after seeing the number of rubbish
rumours that have made the rounds. But I do think that if a rumour might be
true then Brookes is in the right place to know, is 'named' has a lot to
lose if caught out telling porkies. Add to that Colins veiled newspaper
threats at the beginning of the week. I do believe that if he goes then we
will hear more about the T/O.
I am more prone to think that it means the negotiations are not allowing
 Colin to succeed.

In short it may well be that Robert Heath was prescient indeed.

 But [short] time will tell.
