Oh man! RIP Dave. A man who lived life to the full - a true inspiration. So
many hilarious stories from his travels. Never let the Lards down. I
remember him jumping off his bike and straight on the pitch in 'dam ;-)

This game came at the end of a tough week, and I was watching it, convinced
that we were going to lose because everything else had gone wrong. All the
same, we were appalling, and I am convinced there is no way we can avoid
relegation. We don't deserve to avoid relegation; we are a dreadful team
playing dreadful football.
At the end of the day, the management has proven itself an abysmal failure.
When they were taking Bielsa, they knew that the guy was like a Benzedrine
tablet; he would get you up, and then there would be a crash. They waited for
the crash instead of avoiding it. Bielsa should have gone at Christmas; we
should have bought at Christmas and had a new manager in by Christmas. None of
this was done, and we are left with a catastrophic aftermath.
This is the Leeds way of doing everything look as if you can and then prove
that you can't. Always drama never victories any pride and lots of disgrace.
The only silver lining I see is that it will be getting out of the division,
which is a hive of mercenary scum and assorted murderers and international
thieves. The 2nd division is more about football and cities with football
teams. You can't say that about the Premier League, and I will be glad to be
out of it in many respects. It is not the old 1st division; it is nothing like
it. So why pretend? We are a shit team and we don't deserve to be in the
Premier League, and the Premier League doesn't deserve to exist anyway.

I agree that good footballers can and should be able to adapt to many
different positions however there are very few central defenders in the PL that
are comfortable in midfield. Koch is not one of them. Fish out of water and I'm
surprised you can't see it.

However, I would like to throw in a couple of caveats which might constitute

of the 2nd half, which means it seems the players did respond to him. If we
could have just got an equaliser ...got the crowd on our side...who
knows?2. I actually agree with the idea of Koch where he was last night. I
think it was an attempt to maybe play a defensive block of 4 + 1 in a bid to
make sure we didn't ship a shitload of goals again ("hollow laughter"). This
bloody "ooh our manager plays players out of position" line drives me mad.
(Just like all the drivel that is written about positions in the batting order
for the England cricket team.) If you're a good footballer (which believe it or
not all these lads are) you can play anywhere. Pep Guardiola has said this
about Foden.he doesn't play a position, he plays football.

Rarely read the real list nowadays, but wouldn't do without regularly chatting
with our listers on Whatsapp - where there was recently a post about 'imagined
communities'. The bond and love I feel for this community is powerful, and I
often refer to comments from listers as 'one of my friends said..." or 'my
friends are saying...' Certainly, I feel a greater sense of belonging, than I
ever did amongst the misogynist, racist guys on the supporters bus on the way
home from an away game (The same guys that I'd hugged as we sang We Are Leeds
and All Leeds Are We MOT at the game).
No, like Latvian John, I met everynweek at our spot on the Kop, the list is my
mates. And I feel proud to be part of it. Many great contributors over the
years, I have my own favourites; as you said James, Dave and Richard's reports
have been vital, as has Betty's stewardship. Love you all. sniff.

Guy was a joyful imp. Permanently cheerful, despite his numerous physical
discomforts. A true inspiration.

As a `dam noob, in the raw old pre-Airbnb days, he helpfully located a good
hotel for me to book. Only on arrival did we discover it was right on the
main drag in the red light district. The place was immaculate, with a great
view ;-) I couldn't wait to thank him when we met to sink a few gorgeous
beers in some amazing bars. I've been in love with the place ever since.

Thanks Guy, it was a privilege to know you.

RIP mate.

Re: [LU] Chelsea

2020-12-06 Thread nigel
For possibly the first time under Bielsa, I think we are putting out the best
team we can, given our personnel. The players who infuriated me week after week
(e.g. Costa) are finally out of the starting lineup. Yes, what remains isn't
going to win the league, but with Bielsa's magic touch I'm confident that
they're good enough to be mid-table in this league, which is good enough for
me, this year.

Re: [LU] Wolves

2020-10-20 Thread nigel
I'm not massively downhearted about the loss. They happen.

I do however continue to be perplexed at our lack of ability to cross the ball
with any hint of ability. This has been an ongoing, glaringly obvious issue for
all our time under Bielsa, yet not only do we not seem able to sort it out, we
actively continue to play an attacking game which relies almost entirely on it.
Our repeated, patient, build-up play allows the opposition to regroup and mass
in defense, and then when we eventually get the ball to a 'winger', the
resulting cross pretty much never hits a white shirt. We had what, three(?)
last night that got into a dangerous area (one on Rodders' head that he should
have done better with, one that they cleared off Paddy's foot for what should
have been a corner, and one from Raph with his first touch after coming on).
That may well be all that's needed on another day, but it was probably less
than 10% of the crosses we attempted.

On the whole, the biggest frustration is that when we attack I have a sense of
inevitability about us not even creating a chance (largely because of the
crossing thing above), and for very different reasons, when Wolves attacked
last night I had a sense that they may score. Within 10 seconds of both times
that they had the ball in the net last night, I had said to my son "they're
gonna score here, if we continue to let them do this".

I saw several Tweets last night from other clubs' fans saying "all Leeds do is
run, run, run", and to some extent they're right.

Dear All,

Earlier this week we heard of the sad death of one of the earliest members and
most loved characters from the list, David “DRB” Brennan.
Not only was DRB a list regular in the 90s as a trawl through the archives held
by James Lundon proved but he also wrote a lot of good stuff.

As a season ticket-holder he used to go to reserve matches at The Shay and (as
well as Maggie Barber) post regular reports of the reserves’
progress. He was a regular source of ticket information and became very
friendly with Mandy in the ticket office especially when trying to find out
what times cup matches would be played and what the ticket allocations would be.

DRB and his wife Kate were part of a gang that regularly met pre-match (he was
an Adolphi regular), he was at the MOALM and he was the man behind the
sponsored head shave at the first Euronet in 1996.

Like others on the list he was a Northern Soul boy, coming from Horsforth what
else would he be?

One of the friendliest, funniest and kindest blokes I have had the pleasure to
meet he will always be the example I would use of what the list is about.

DRB leaves behind, Kate and the two boys Sid and Bradley and we have been in
touch to send our sympathy. No date has been set for what will be a very small
family funeral but his brother-in-law suggests there might be a memorial
service in the future. The family has asked, if anyone wishes to, that
donations are made to MIND which is a charity DRB supported.

We checked with the family before we posted anything to the list and they were
happy for us to do this. As we get more information, we will pass this on but
in the meantime please enjoy the following post to the list from 1996, it’s
typical of the DRB we knew and loved (that and the bloody song he wrote about
Tomas Brolin!)

RIP DRB.

Subj:LU: Interview

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, as your team selection for some games over the past
few months has been, shall we say, "innovative" what will be your policy for
the Port Vale game?

HW: Well, all things considered, and bearing in mind that our players have had
a hectic autograph signing session recently, and it will be a bit chilly, I
think 11 players will suffice.

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, does this mean that even though your African players
are back from international duty, you will not use them?

HW: All things being equal, Tony, Phil and Lucas are definitely players, and
players want to play, want to play, but there can only be so many players, who
play, so they may play a part in playing but it's not so warm for players who
normally play, normally play, in a warmer climate.

Interviewer: It was suggested that in the Aston Villa game, you may have been
better playing an attacking side, as the defence, containing so many
youngsters, was unlikely to keep Villa out, offence being the best sort of
defence.

HW: Youngsters, youngsters. I was young once, and wanted to play, wanted to
play. You've got to give them a goal, I mean go, they may be short of pace,
but Rob Bowman has got the same name as the Producer of the X Files, so who
knows what might happen, might happen. I picked the best side for the game,
for the game. When I start telling you where to use a metaphor instead of a
simile, and when to employ onomatopoeic licence, then you can tell me how to
pick and quarter of pick and mix, I mean a football team.

Interviewer: There has been much discussion about Tomas Brolin's future at
Elland Road. Can you enlighten us as to the current situation?

HW: Tomas has got a white shirt, some people might say, might say, it still has
Parmalat on it, but I say Thistle Hotels. I know the shirts are the same
colour, and that was a major consideration in buying Tommy. I like continuity,
like buying players from Sheffield, so buying a player who was used to wearing
the same colour shirt fitted in well with our long-term plans. Brolly is happy
wearing white and yellow trimmed with blue and if Brollywolly is happy, I'm
happy, I'm happy.

Interviewer: But Mr Wilkinson, Tomas Brolin is a world class player, do you
think there will be a place for him in tomorrow's cup game against Port Vale?

HW: This could well be a bit of a clash, what with the colour of their shirts
against the blue seats of Elland Road, I might find it difficult to follow
their play, especially if I forget to take my yellow tinted motorway night
driving glasses off, glasses off. Port Vale are a big s

I've been watching a TV series from Norway called "Heimbane".

It's another in the "Female Coach/Male Football Team" genre.

I don't think it's been on British TV, nor on a Netflix-type streaming service,
and the only subtitles I've found are less than perfect.

In Heimbane there's a character called Eddie (played by Per Jan Vinje) who is
the club's groundsman and prop master.

He's also a very enthusiastic Leeds United fan and appears in every episode
wearing a different Leeds shirt.

In the episode I watched last night, he posed a trivia question to the team.

No answer was provided, so I'm wondering if anyone here can figure it out.

Here goes, pasted from the subtitles:

Ok... what former Leeds player

played also for Sunderland, Arsenal and Manchester City?

It's a trick question.

Thanks John,

My two experiences at WorldNet were fantastic, met many people I had only ever
known virtually through this list and every one of them was a true gent. Was a
spectator at Leicester (though got to play one friendly) and then played at the
one at Bodington Hall. I remember Damian Walsh providing much charcuterie and
much booze both before and after games, its a miracle any Lards games got
played! Maggie Barber drove me up to Leeds for the second one, his car kept
overheating so we had to drive with the heat turned up full blast to try and
pull heat away from the engine, it was a boiling hot day in July as I remember.

If any listers have any photos from WorldNet I'd love to see them. This was of
course before the days of smartphones sp pictures may be hard to come by.

Best

Jeremy

Re: [LU] Reading

2020-02-23 Thread nigel
Yeah, pretty much how I saw it too.

I've said all season that all our games are basically the same - sometimes we
pass the ball more cleanly and attack with more vim, and sometimes we defend
better than others, but on the whole it's generally the same game, week after
week. Then it's largely down to how luck goes our way - sometimes we are
unlucky and none of the chances go in, sometimes we give away one too many set
pieces at the other end. We OUGHT to win pretty much every game quite
comfortably, but with the quality of finishing we have it'll always be a bit of
a lottery. So let's hope that the luck stays with us for the next few games...

Subject: [LU] Reading

Well in some ways this was a replica of last week- largely outclass a poor team
in bad weather, only score one goal and come close at the end to conceding a
goal and throwing away 2 points, but in the end holding on and getting a much
needed 3 pts However although, superficially, the games were the same , in
reality they were very different. Last week v Bristol the weather, although
awful ,did not stop us playing great football and pinging accurate 25 yd balls
across the pitch and it was only the woodwork, twice, and 2 brilliant saves /
awful misses that stopped it being a total rout. Yesterday we were wayward with
our passes and created few real clear cut chances. We were on the front foot
from the start and 2 crosses one in the air and one right across the 6yd box
after great work by Costa just failed to be met by Bamford. Klich who looks
like he has forgotten how to score had a decent attempt saved when the ref
played an advantage. A special mention for the ref yesterday, he really tried
to let the game flow and played a number of advantages , twice ( one apiece)
going back and then showing a yellow. I cant remember any really bad decisions
so for once the "we only get shit refs" did not get an airing We all groaned
and held our breath as the Yorkshire Pirlo went down, played on, but then went
off injured, possibly a massive blow. Ayling decided he is now a goal scorer
and lashed one attempt just wide before our best move and chance of the half.
Some good link up play led to Harrison chilling an exquisite pass into the
onrushing Alioski who hit it well but the keeper had his angled right. They
were restricted to one long range shot that kiko dived to palm away
0 0 at half time but the mood in yet another full house was content was we all
felt it was coming.
At the start of the second half klich again found his shooting but not his
scoring boots with 2 decent efforts from distance. Then came the match winner,
Pablo had his first shot blocked but the ball rebounded to him and some
trickery and some luck took him past a few defenders before a lovely finish
into the top corner- brilliant finish and brilliant scences in the packed
stands.
We had a few other chances to put the game to bed a good free kick by Pablo
being the pick of the bunch, but this is Bielsa's Leeds and we rarely make
things easy on ourselves, the clock ticked down and the nerves in the crowd
were being stretched although the confidence was mainly still there, then in
the 92nd minute the almost unthinkable, almost inevitable, almost happened.
The ball came their player in space inside the 6yd box, however this time it
was kiko to the rescue and he came out and smothered it, a very important save.
So not at our best in a poor, fairly boring game when the weather was one
winner, we were the other with valuable three points, and the 11 point gap
that had been whittled down to goal difference is back up a bit to 5 points,
and as everyone keeps pointing out on,y Fulham of the top teams to play. This
is the defining week for me (again) lose these 2 and end up in 3rd or 4th by
this time next week and we are almost done for. 6 points and extend the gap and
things will be very rosy.
We do seem to have turned the corner and winning a scrappy poor game can only
help the belief Dave ___

Re: [LU] shoot rich and wap

2020-02-16 Thread nigel
I really don't mind the crosses that they put into the box which go to an
opponent - though they very often do it without looking up - at least they get
it into the danger zone. But crossing without looking is something you can
only do if you have a good idea of where your CF will be and I don't think
Bamford is predictable enough for that to work. What's far more common with
the crossing though is that they either balloon them over everyone or they hit
the first defender, and neither of those is acceptable.

As an aside, I'm really puzzled by how many people I've seen online saying
Costa had a great game - someone even said he was MOTM. I thought he was
pretty awful, and usually is. Our most ineffectual player for me.

Thanks for the report Rich. I couldn’t make it yesterday so interesting
reading how we did.Maybe I should miss more games it it means we win!I’ve often
thought with the crosses that there’s more than just blaming the crosser. As
you say, sometimes there’s not much to aim for and sometimes Bamford’s movement
isn’t great. I wonder if Costa and Harrison play balls into an area, hoping
someone will be there or are they actually trying to pick a specific player out.

No I didn’t hear the City commentators say that but it’s true, Bamford needs

Also, I’ve noticed that the reason that Costa and Harrison do usually find an
opposition player with their final ball / cross is that usually there’s only
Bamford in the area which is the downside of playing with one striker. On the
plus side we usually pick up the clearance and it all starts again.
We did actually have a few of long distance efforts - Klich and Costa in the
first half but they were both at the keeper.

[LU] We're doomed

2020-02-09 Thread nigel
So Radz has turned on the fans now:
"ONE thing frustrate me more then any defeat.I have been like a fan like
you, travelling and supporting my team since I was a student and no money.
How can't you support a team/club that have reached the best result of last
16 years!! being always in top 3 since Aug 2018. Nite"

When the management start whining about supporters venting their
frustrations, it is the beginning of the end. They'll be blaming the fans
for the performances next (many other fans already are).

We're doomed.

at anyone who can remain optimistic. When seeing such blind faith on e.g.
Facebook groups, I always assume that they're young fellas, who haven't had the

I have a probably irrational feeling that this season (even though it would be
entirely uncharacteristic of Leeds to benefit this way of course) the number of
points needed for 2nd might be a little lower. My reason for this is that I
sense there have been an above average number fo draws in our division this
year...and every time there is a draw, 1 point is sucked out of the system,
never to be replaced.

In the old days, we used to have stattoes on this list who would have been able
to confirm a) if there have been more draws than usual, and b) if that can lead
to a lower points total needed for promotion. But in their absence, I suppose
I'll have to just keep on with the tarot cards and the voodoo dolls.

It did, and I was right. Because we did change it - White has been playing as
more of a midfielder. In the first half he was playing as a centre half.

Agreed. We've basically ended up playing without a defensive midfielder and
it's allowing Huddersfield the run of the centre. Has to change in the 2nd
half or we'll lose this.

for it and we're second to every ball. Hopefully we can pick it up second half.

Re: [LU] Reading

2019-11-26 Thread nigel
Yep. I agree pretty much 100%

Thought Alioski made all the difference - he thinks about going forward and
(crucially) passing forwards first and foremost, which is something nobody else
in the team seems to consider (apart from White). And that attitude is
thankfully infectious.

All the possession but no idea. I thought we were poor tonight especially first
half. Every final pass going astray and players just incapable of passing a
ball to a team mate. Hernandez was particularly poor, he has a real knack of
passing a simple ball to the opposition. He achieves it with ease. Roberts
didn’t offer nothing as at Luton and to be honest his injury was the best thing
that happened.

Second half was better as we upped the tempo and when Allioski came on for the
awful Klich he made a real difference. Costa played ok and the goal was a great
break but even that was a deflected cross to Harrison who did well to head home
( Bamford take note). It was Harrison’s only contribution to the game.

Great win, poor performance , top of the league and you can’t argue with that.

Casilla - 7 some decent saves.

Ayling - 5. A couple of half decent crosses but generally doesn’t offer half as
much as Dallas going forward or the right.

Cooper - 7 solid

White - 9 Best defender and best midfielder. This lad is the business.

Klich -2 terrible. Passes loose , just not effective. It might be a time for a
rest.

Philips - 5. Some good defensive work but his passing especially second half
was terrible. Completely lost it. Not sure about his pieces either.

Hernandez - 5. Saw lots of the ball but didn’t do much with it.

Dallas - 6. Not happy in midfield but still created some good chances. Hit the
bar.

Harrison - 5. Scored the winner but very ineffective on the wing.

Bamford - 3. Cant really remember any serious contribution.

Roberts - 1 didn’t contribute before going off injured

Subs

Allioski - 8 lively , made a difference

Costa - 7 his best performance so far

Shack - on for a couple of minutes.

Is Eddie fit for Saturday ?

Re: [LU] Preston

2019-10-24 Thread nigel
I agree all round. But I think that the main problem is just the lack of speed
of the attacks. Think back to when Saiz was playing and Alioski was on the
left wing. We all got horribly frustrated at how often Alioski got caught
offside - I mean, it was ALL the time! But we just don't attack in the same
way anymore, and we're rarely in a position for anyone to be caught offside.
We're more fluid when Pablo is in the team obviously, but we're still not that
fast attacking unit we were 12 months ago. I'm very critical of Harrison's
crossing, but to be fair to him and his targets, by the time he crosses it, the
box is inevitably packed.

The think that’s fair. As you say, it’s hard to cross the ball if there’s no
one to aim for. With our lack of height we need the striker to make quick runs
across the defenders to get on the end of low crosses, not sure that’s
Bamford’s game.
I’ve been really impressed with Dallas at right back

[LU] Preston 1-1

2019-10-22 Thread nigel
I'll be honest - I'm not enjoying watching us play at all anymore. Every
game is the same, and it is SO predictable. You could describe the way the
game went without even seeing it and be 95% right, every time. My heart
rate doesn't even go up during the game anymore. Not even when we scored.

I just can't understand how we can't do something to change the way we act
in the final third. It is Bielsa's big flaw that he can't do anything to
change this.

I must point out that I would have felt exactly like this, win, lose or draw
tonight. I'm just so sick of it.

Re: [LU] 1-0

Eddie didn't do much to be honest. He didn't miss as many as Bamford, but
that's a double-edged sword. Berra did nothing mental.

We were pretty poor in the 2nd half though, and really clung on for a win.

To be honest, nothing changes. I've said it before, sometimes we'll nick a
goal, sometimes we'll ship one. Today's goal came from a ball steal in their
1/3rd which was in the back of the net 3 touches later - so no time to think
and slow it all down to a crawl like we usually do. Kalvin's shot wasn't
great, as it was straight at the keeper, but it managed to get under him and
into the net.

Still no ability to score (we haven't actually scored ourselves in three whole

league with that 'magic' 2 points per game. Funny old world innit?

Thought Bamford was immense tonight. But what's up with Costa? Been a very
poor showing these last two games, having been given his chance to start.

Re: [LU] Charlton

2019-09-29 Thread nigel
Yep. I completely agree. It is very frustrating that the problems which
stymied us last season remain our problems today. The answer? Someone who can
get the byline and get a good cross in, without giving the defence time to set
themselves would seem to be the obvious need. At the moment, a large
percentage of our attacks end up with Harrison, who both takes too long to so
anything with it, and then inevitably his final ball is useless.

I'd prefer to see us a) build from both sides (quickly), and in the short term
at least I'd try Alioski on the left wing and put our actual left back, Douglas
in at left back! If Alioski can manage to keep onside (unlikely I know), then
I think he'd be more likely to get that pacey, accurate cross in.

Am I imagining this, or did Bielsa not say at the end of last season that he
didn’t think these players could do it all again? I think he was using it as
‘motivation’ when trying to win the last few games, but maybe he was near the
mark?

I still think most of our play is enough to get us up, but the approach to
goal, whether via crossing, shooting or trying to pass it through 7 man
defences, is THE problem. I don’t even think it’s the ‘fault’ of individual
players (although Harrison’s crossing drives me nuts!), but the system. That is
down to the manager, and he has to get to grips with it, otherwise ...

Love this list me: Bamford is sh*t and Bielsa doesn't know what he's doing!

Seriously? We could have been 3 up by 75 minutes and should have been 2 up but
for Klich trying to be a clever fcuk with the penalty. That he tried to pass it
in to the net again is obviously Bamfords fault though.

75 minutes is significant because that's when Bielsa was forced to bring Pablo
off due to Holmes doing a number on him. Obviously, Bielsa got it wrong again
because he should have replaced Pablo with Pablo and must share some of the
blame with Bamford for Klich's sh*te penalty.

I'm generally a Bamford fan, but it's starting to get difficult to justify it.
He plays very well everywhere except where it matters most. But still, for me
the real problem is creating chances. We have very little idea of how to break
down the packed defences we see every week, and one thing that really lets us
down there is the quality of the crossing. They're all poor, but Harrison in
particular is dogshit when it comes to the final ball, and yet they mostly fall
to him to make.

And sadly, we've seen this happen so often now that I suspect that many of us
DID see this coming at half time! Certainly, as soon as Klich cockily missed
that penalty.

Anyone not see this coming at half time? For all our 80% possession and 5 star
first (machine) half performance - it's not good enough and we have a BIG
problem scoring and this may very well find us out. The problem continues.

I thought just before Derby scored that I have never felt more deflated about a
victory, or even draw in the end. I have to say it - again - Bamford gets on
the end of things and won us a pen, but his conversion rate is not there for a
centre forward. 1-0 lead is never enough and we paid heavily today for that. We
need somebody that can turn good chances into goals.
C'mon MB, change it around - possession and chances is NOT enough! Don't base
an entire performance on how the" machine" is working, slip in a proven goal
scorer. QED!

I have watched them over and over, but I can't quite decide which was
better.Pablo's pass for the first goal or Pablo's pass for the
third goal.

But if I had to choose, it must be the first one simply because he had so
little time to size up the angle and weight required but played it one touch
and both of those were perfection.

Nice summation and I pretty much agree with it all.

The bottom line is that we have continued to play pretty much exactly like we

Subject: [LU] Forest

Bielsa said after the match that we’d created 10 clear chances to win the game
and that should have been enough. He’s right but how many times have we heard
him say that since he arrived? It’s becoming almost as frequent as Simon
Grayson saying ‘we put a shift in today’.

Time and time again we got into goal scoring positions but due to the lack of
quality of the final ball, which seemed at times to gravitate towards a red
shirt, we failed to trouble the keeper. Jack Harrison was the main culprit. Yes
he got himself into some great positions and made some great runs but time and
time again he failed to find a white shirt. This got worse in the second half
when you almost expected him to mess up when played in by yet another great
cross field ball. Great things are expected of Harrison this season but on this
showing he is struggling to live up to the pre-season hype.

Forest offered little in the first half and looked like they’d come for a point
by sitting deep and making it difficult for us. At times, our play was laboured
and we struggled to get the ball moving through midfield. The passing around at
the back was laboured and whilst this seems like taking control away from home
it looks like a team lacking ideas when we’re doing it for 5 minutes at home.

The main problem as I saw it was that Philips, Klich and Forshaw are all too
similar and none were making runs which meant the only options to move the ball
forward were long cross field balls to Harrison or down the right with
Hernandez and Dallas. Luckily both those options were good for us.

Second half I thought Forest improved as they realised we were toothless and
they could actually hurt us. They were a bit unlucky for our goal as the Forest
man’s tackle ricocheted to Hernandez who placed it past the keeper.

Forest then brought Ameobi on they give it a go. Ameobi was fast and direct and
we struggled to contain him. One of those runs resulted in the corner from
which they scored. Forest were only going to score from a set piece or long
throw but you sort of knew it was inevitable. From the NE upper it was hard to
see what happened for the goal so I’ll wait for someone who saw it on the tv to
tell me whether it was a defensive fuck up or unlucky. It just looked like we
failed to clear.

We huffed and puffed at the end and Costa showed us he should have come on 29
minutes earlier - bad mistake from Bielsa. Klich was out on his feet after 60
minutes. Allioski replaced the ineffective Harrison but he looked ring rusty
and failed to make an impact. Surely Jack Clarke on the left wing would have
been the better option ? What’s the point of having him back on loan ?

Overall, we should have won, but we didn’t and we need to be better if we’re
expecting promotion this season. Forest were a big physical team that made it
hard for us. They offered little but in a way they did a job on us.

Kiko - 5. Had literally nothing to do other than pick the ball out of the back
of the net. His kicking was dodgy today.

Dallas - 8. I thought he was arguably our best player today. His forward
running is direct and opens things up. I thought he also defended well.

Douglas - 6. Did ok, got forward first half and nearly got himself in a goal
scoring position only to be denied by a great Forest tackle. Tired second half.

White - 7. Generally sound but he had one or 2 moments where he came off 2nd
best. Still decent for a new centre back. think he reads the game well.

Cooper - 8. I thought he defended very well and some of his cross field balls
were very effective. His challenge in the 2nd half when Forest were attacking
was top drawer. Took ball and man. Great stuff.

Phillips - 6. Didn’t do anything wrong. Some great passes and some duff passes
into space. Always available and always working hard but at times he’s so
pedestrian it’s untrue. There’s no way this lad is a premiership footballer but
he’s doing ok.

Forshaw - 7. I thought he was our best midfielder today. Never spectacular but
there was a spell in the 2nd half where he just kept us together through
harrying and winning the ball. Ultimately I think him , Philips and Klich are
too similar to play together at home (maybe away is better).

Klich - 4. I’m worried about Klich. There’s no doubts that he is not the same
player we saw scoring all those goals in the first half of last season. We saw
a steady decline last season and this seems to have continued in the first 2
games. Watching him today he’s playing almost as a 2nd striker

Re: [LU] non LU - VAR & offside

2019-07-03 Thread nigel
I think they should adopt a cricket-like approach. If the VAR shows that they
are only just offside, like the "big toe" scenario, then it should go with the
officials' original decision. Only if it is clearly offside (above a certain
margin - maybe 20cm?) should they use VAR to overrule the decision. And maybe
allow less leeway on things incorrectly ruled offside by the assistant referee,
to give the attacking side more chance.

Re: [LU] VAR

2019-06-09 Thread nigel
It's so like the football authorities to mess this up. VAR is already ruining
goal celebration for fans. I know it takes the edge off those moments of joy
in other sports too, but those sports tend to have way more occasions to
celebrate. In a football match there might only be one such moment, and to
have that joy removed by "oh, we'll have to wait for the VAR to decide if
anything untoward went on in the minute beforehand" ruins it.

And why, oh why, can't they stop the clock - give that to someone off the field
to control? That's one thing they could have taken from other sports, but
stubbornly refuse to.

Re: [LU] Question

2019-04-28 Thread nigel
I never said anything about him specifically scoring goals. Merely that he had
become our only player with the vision to unlock stacked defences, and that he
has sadly lost that ability towards the end of the season. So we as a team are
now clueless at how to create a scoring chance.

Pablo is a midfield player. His primary task is not goal scoring. Nevertheless
he has carried us to victory in several recent games.

He is our player of the season by a fucking mile.

Re: [LU] Question

2019-04-28 Thread nigel
It has been a season and a half, certainly. But today's game was (apart from
the 5 minutes of mayhem) exactly like all the others in recent times - we are
toothless in front of goal to a degree that would be hilarious if it wasn't us.

I think that the problem boils down to a simple lack of vision in our mostly
average players. Once Saiz left and Alioski and Hernandez mystifyingly lost
their vision and ability to pass, we have been left with nothing but a "pass to
a white shirt" mentality, which sure gives us a lot of possession, but achieves
nothing in front of goal.

I don't know what's happened to Pablo - but at the end of the day he's 34 and
since his early days at Valencia he hasn't exactly excelled. So maybe the
chink in his armour is not being able to handle pressure like we've seen at the
end of this season?

My question.why are we so 'inefficient' and how can we become more

Is it the quality of the front men?

Re: [LU] 4 More Cup Finals

2019-04-13 Thread nigel
Gotta agree Rev.

I think Alioski has been off the boil for the last few games - after being
truly excellent for several games before that.

The midfield is a bit absent quite a lot, to be honest. I forgot Klich was
even playing for much of today's game. And Berardi does not look at all
comfortable with the passing around at the back.

But none of that matters tonight!

On the really positive side, we mostly looked like we knew where the net was
today, which has certainly not been true of a lot of games this season. Shots
a plenty!

Blimey, that was a tough watch. Absolutely deserved the win, from start to
finish, but at 1-0, and our propensity to give the ball away in key areas, it
wasn’t enjoyable until the ref blew.

No matter how enjoyable the final result, I will point out 2 gripes.

Alioski - some utterly desperate passes and crosses today, and some very poor
decision making. There was something between him and Pontus at the beginning
too - it didn’t look entirely friendy/supportive - maybe Pontus said “try and
pass it to a white shirt for a change” :-)

Casillas - if this guy is supposed to generate calm it is not working. His
punching when he should catch it, his catching generally, and his attitude to
f***ing up are very irritating, and today he spooked me good and proper!

Imagine, if Millwall could take penalties?

I reckon Sheffield have another defeat in them, so we just have to win!

Re: [LU] Preston

2019-04-10 Thread nigel
Nice hands-on report, and matches well with the view from my French armchair.

I think Bamford is a good player, but that he isn't necessarily an ideal fit
for the role he's been given. He's great at holding up the ball and his vision
seems good. But his striker's instincts seem a little lacking sometimes. I
think he needs a second striker playing with him - I imagine he'd look fabulous
with a Rod Wallace type playing alongside him.

Well only my second away of the season and I must be Bamfords good luck charm
since the other was Bolton - so I have seen us win 1-0 and now 2-0 with all 3
of our goals being scored by Bamford I forgot how much fun away games are - we
arrived in Preston at 3pm and went straight in the big pub near the station to
find it full of Leeds fans (as were the other 3 pubs we went in) something you
never really see in Leeds , mind you with 5,400 Leeds fans there we were bound
to take over the place My seat was 2 rows from the front so it meant I got a
great close up view of stuff in the area nearest to us but could not really get
an overview of the game We definitely deserved the 3 points since i do not
remember Kiko having a single save to make and apart from one shot that went
into the side netting I don't think they had a chance worthy of the name. The
first half was a bit of a non event ,we controlled the game and had a few long
range shots most of which did not trouble the keeper but the general mood at
half time was that it was just a matter of time We then got the bit of luck we
so desperately needed - Bamford was put through a fair way from goal and was
hauled down - the ref thought it was a 'professional foul by the last man
stopping a goal scoring opportunity' - most of us thought 'Bamford would have
missed!'
Against ten men we all felt that our style of play would mean that the chances
would come and goals would follow, and what a goal the first one was. Bamford
intercepted a pass took at touch to get it onto his left foot and that from
just outside the area he hammered it into the top corner - we had a great view
as it flew towards us only being stopped by the goal net - what a cracker and
what a way for Bamford to get his scoring back on track We felt that one goal
would be enough but wanted the second to make sure - we nearly got it when
Bamford fed Ayling but his shot grazed the post. Then almost in slow motion
Klich got the ball in the area and chipped it to the unmarked Bamford whose
header from outside the 6yd area looped over the keeper 2-0 and game over.
We should have gone for it and tried to get our goal difference to match
Sheffields but we seemed content to keep the ball and see the game out -
Bamford could, should?, have had his hat trick when he was through clear on
goal but took his time and the defender got back to make a challenge.
We never looked like conceding but we did give away a number of free kicks in
dangerous positions and that was the only way you could see them getting back
into it So a very important win - we needed it and got it - puts the pressure
on Sheff U for tonights game when hopefully Monk will get his team to do us a
favour The kind guard on the train threw all the young and noisy Leeds fans out
of first class but let me and my mate stay there because "you are behaving and
being nice" - he even brought us (and some other fans he allowed in) a free
bottle of water - result So come on Brum tonight and then roll on Saturday - we
will know what we need to do v a resurgent Sheff Wed who have a small chance of
making the play offs - something we achieved last night, so whatever happens a
successful season. I could not believe some of the crap talked about Bamford on
waccoe etc, one dickhead even posting "he should never play for us again" - I
have maintained that he is a class player who would come good , well he did
last night , so lets hope it is the start of a proper scoring spree for the lad
So 5 games to go and all to play for Dave

Well games like that do make up for some of the dross I've seen over the years.

I think the worst game involving Leeds that I've ever seen was an absolutely
dire 0-0 draw against Derby County in front of about 15K bored, freezing
spectators in which the most exciting action was the kick off. This was in the
1988/9 season I think. It was also the first and, not uncoincidentally, the
last game I ever took my then girlfriend to.

They've got 2 guys up front who are probably the best strikers in the league

What has happened to Klich? He's still doing ok and he is getting into good

I think we can get back into this but it's always likely they will score again.

"United are back, United are back"
Well those of you who thought that we had been 'rumbled' may have to re-think
things after a totally dominant display and a real return to the peak
'Bielasball' last night - albeit against a very poor team who were low on
confidence
Two slight moans - first, the crowd, whislt good in terms of numbers was as
quiet during the first half as I can remember (practice for the Prem?) Secondly
the fact that despite it being shooting practice at the end and almost the
oldkids game of attack v defence we only managed 2 goals
However these two gripes are totally overshadowed by a tremendous performance,
all made possible by the return of the magician , Pablo Hernandez, who was
sublime and went through their back line like the proverbial knife through
butter. He was a joy to watch and when he plays like this you wonder what he is
doing in this Division. How we have missed him especially at home when faced
with a team who pack the defence and come for a draw.
The other returnee, Kemar Roofe, also proved , yet again, that he is a centre
forward not a winger, and when he is allowed to play up top he gets results,
this time a lovely timed header when he got between the 2 defenders and met a
brilliant cross by Pablo - the finish very similar to the goal v Derby (?) He
buzzed around and caused them problems all evening.
Everyone played their part last night, with all 3 subs also doing well. Dallas
showed what he can still offer something going forward and had one attempt just
wide and one lovely run when he actually took on and beat two defenders. Pearce
showed that he does still have a future- like the rest of us he must have
wondered why he did not get the nod ahead of Dallas when Douglas got injured.
Forshaw fitted into the system as if he was born into it and also went close
with a rasping drive, he replaced the slightly subdued Saiz and kept the ball
moving with little Batty-esque type passing and interceptions.

We could have had a hatful with Alisoki coming closest to adding to the total
with a great run and shot that came back from the inside of the post - he was
another player who was back to his best last night , with a cross in the first
half nearly causing a goal as the keeper could only parry it back into the
danger zone.
The second goal and the one that eased all our tension off the pitch and led to
total capitulation from Ipswich on it, was brilliant and well worked - a short
corner came back to Pablo and his cross was superbly dummied by Phillips(?) and
fell to Cooper who side footed it with his right from the edge of the box - yes
League -One Liam as some call him finsihed with real skill and aplomb. That
ended the game as a contest (if it ever was, since all they managed was one
easily saved header in the first half and were almost gifted a goal by Ayling
right at the death) and it became almost a procession of us coming forward and
having pot shots and scrambles - their keeper was their man of the match (and
beaten only by Pablo for THE MoM)
It was a perfect response to the Blackburn defeat - a bit worrying that Berardi
went off , presumably injured but with Bielsa, who knows it could have been
tactical. Bielsa again used his subs wisely and excitingly making a double sub
with over 30mins to go and no more cards to play. I love the way he re-acts to
what is happening on the pitch - some managers seem to pre-plan the sub one
striker for another on 60 mins every game or making no subs at all until time
wasting at the end of a game.
With other results going our way this week - Boro being held at home by
Rotherham and West Brom getting hammered at home by Derby means 'we are top'the
league, say we are top'the league' - these results confirming what we already
knew , this League is totally competitive and any result is possible in any
match. This also elevates our performance and result last night - Man City v
Cardiff or whoever is top and bottom of the Prem is pretty much a nailed on
home win, that is not the case in the Championship (look at Birmingham turning
us over when we were top and they were bottom or next to bottom) so beating
Ipswich whilst expected was in no way a foregone conclusion and we needed to be
at or near our best to do it, and that is what we were, back to our best
So onwards and upwards - with Forest to come Saturday evening - we will know by
kick o

could have been 7. Apart from first 10 mins and 5 minutes in 2nd half we were
much better team. Really good performance against a team who will be relegated
this season.
Scores:
Peacock - 8. Not much to do. One disallowed goal, a good early save, a few
back pass type shots and one dodgy cross that he had to parry in first half
Ayling - 7. Shocking start where he just kept losing out but he steadied and
played well
Douglas - 7. Steady away - decent going forward
Cooper - 8. One dodgy pass that put us under ressure but overall great
defending. Scored as well, really cant expect anymore from a captain and you
have to say that he is one of the most improved players from last season.
Jansson - 9. Rock solid defending. Back to his best
Siaz - 9. At the heart of everything. Needs a goal.
Philips - 8. One or two dodgy passes and tackles but overall I thought he was
very impressive albeit against pedestrian opposition.
Klich - 8. Should have had 2 but overall I thought he was very impressive. He's
strong, plays great football and is a strong runner. I think he's a great
player. See his cross for Robert's second goal.
Allioski - 7. Lively but annoying.
Harrison - 7. Lively first half, quiet second and should have had a goal after
a great ball through from Siaz
Roberts - 6. Really pleased for the lad. He took his goal well after a good
goal from Philips and then looked like he wanted the ball. He was terrible
first half and I would have considered taking him off but all credit to him.
Hopefully he can kick on against Brum.
Subs - not on long.

Re: [LU] Bielsa

2018-08-24 Thread Nigel Sykes
I hear what you're saying, but it's my opinion that a good team will always
impose their style of play on the opposition. Sure, they may tinker with minor
aspects, or a player or two here and there, but they should generally do what
they do and let the opposition worry about them. Going into each game thinking
about how to combat the opposition strengths more than how to impose your own
is what weak teams do. I don't think teams win championships doing that.

So I for one applaud Bielsa's attitude. I think it is what got us a draw the
other night, and I think it will instil a belief in the team that they can get
results, home or away.

I do agree though that he needs to find a way to keep the team playing the way
he wants them to without relying so much on Saiz. Because shutting him down
(and frustrating him in the process, so he gets petulant and booked etc.) was
what caused us the most problems last year, and without him operating freely we
will struggle to be as effective.

I remember posting a while back questioning how MB will cope if and when other
teams suss us out - I suggested that he would have a Plan B, C and even D -
from his presser yesterday this clearly is not the case
He has one Plan - Plan A and if that is not working he will tinker with
personnel etc until it does - he will not be changing the way we play.
Not sure I 100% agree with this Crespo story - I (as a parent and cub leader)
see nothing wrong with telling a youngster something that is not true if it
helps them in their development etc - surely part of being a manager is knowing
when to 'big someone up and when to pull them down a peg or two' - instilling
belief is not a bad thing even if you have to lie / exaggerate a bit)

I do get the meaning behind the story - a manager cannot tell a team how to
play and tell them this is the best way and then change it when the game is
going against them -but I am not sure he is correct, surely there is an
argument for 'horses for courses' and on occasion adapting your method to cope
with the opposition ?

I do have faith in MB and to be honest the early games have been great to
watch , even Swansea when we never really hit the heights was excellent at
times but I worry what will happen if we cannot impose our style on other
teams .
Various things went wrong last season - having a rubbish keeper and the defence
losing confidence in him, injury to ayling, Saiz being banned, not having a
reliable goal scorer etc BUT one of the main things was being 'found out'/
being bullied by the likes of Millwall and Cardiff - will this side be able to
stand up to teams like that ? Coming from behind twice at Swansea is a good
start but it is very early days
Anyway lets hope we can continue our early season form - Norwich away and
Middlesboro at home are both difficult games (not that many look easy on paper
in this Division) - so 4 or 6 points would be amazing.
I expected us to have 4* or 5 points rather than the 10 we have so it has been
a great start (fancied a point v Stoke with it being first game at home v a
relegated team, 0pts at Derby, 3 at home to Rotherham, and 0 or maybe 1 v
Swansea)

of the Bielsa revival :)..

1996 - had 2, now 5. They are all Leeds supporters though some a bit more
vaguely than others.

The eldest 2 have been to Elland Road but it was a traumatic match - the 1
- 0 defeat to Fulham under O' Dreary which (for me anyway) marked a
tangible starting point to our subsequent decline - so none of us have been
back since. In any case, the five year old just wanted to fight the Fulham
fans after they scored and as she's in her twenties now she'd get arrested.
She does live in Leeds though at the moment, being a post-grad student at
whatever they call Leeds Met nowadays.

Congratulations to the new father BTW!

2018-08-22 Thread Nigel Sykes
Two boys in my squad. First one is 25, so was already around when I joined the
list in the mid-90's. Youngest is now 20. Both are Leeds fans, despite growing
up in Dublin and generally being the only ones in their classes at school.

Both have been to a few games with me over the years,  but neither are that
invested to be honest - the youngest hasn't really any interest in sport and
the eldest is obsessed with American Football (as am I,  to be fair).

Hey all

Very pleased to announce the fact that on Thursday my wife Nicky gave birth
to our first son and Leeds fan, Finlay (Finn) James Murray.

Finn and I watched the Rotherham game in hospital together and he was very
pleased with our performance.

I am sure that he will think that us winning the league is just one of those
things that happens routinely - which is how I felt in 1992. I am so
re-invigorated with Bielsa that I have bought an android box so that I dont
have to miss any games this season from Perth - if they are not on that then
they can be streamed on the leeds website. I have also spent an
unreasonable amount of cash on LUFC baby tat to dress the lad in.

Anyway, I am just telling everyone I know because I can't smile wide enough
right now.

Re: [LU] Bolton - a few thoughts

You can’t base everything on stats, but for what it’s worth our stats show that
our pass accuracy over the past several years is pretty stable at around 74%.
Our average in the first two games was 73.6%, so basically the same. No stats
for last night, but I suspect it would be slightly less, if anything.

For comparison, the better Premier League teams generally run well into the
80’s. I suspect that Bielsa will want us to at least improve on previous
seasons.

Interesting game. We made 8 changes so big chance for the B-team. We started
like we have done in all the games and for 35 minutes I thought we looked good
with Pearce and Shackleton doing well as wing backs.
But then I thought we ran out of steam and maybe that's the difference in
fitness levels and skills between the B-Team and the first 11 ? I thought we
returned to some of the aimless square and backward balls at the back that we
have seen under previous managers. The gap between defence and midfield got
wider and as a result we became less effective. Bolton then began to cause a
threat and in the end they could have got a result and you have to remember
they made 9 changes too !
So in the end I was happy with the result but it made me think that maybe some
of our squad players are not going to be able to support a promotion push this
season.
Blackman - 7. one bad spill which should have been a goal for them.
Shackleton - 7. I like the look of this lad. Ok, he lost possession a few times
and looked at times like he was struggling but you can see he's got quality.
Pearce - 6. He's a bit more pedestrian than Shackleton and definitely second
choice to Douglas this season. Did well coming forward at times.
Jansson - 7. Looked a tad rusy, few dodgy balls but second half showed his
strength and experience in a few one to ones. Certainly didn't do enough though
to convince the manager he should be playing instead of Cooper and Beradi and I
never thought I would say that.
Ayling - 8. The ever dependable Ayling.
Phillips - 8. To be fair, he looked the most comfortable and effective in his
role which is suiting him down to the ground.
Saiz - 8. I thought he was playing at 75% but still looked a class above and
scored a great goal.
Harrison - 7. Tricky little player and he covered some ground. I think he'll be
pushing Allioski for that left sided position soon.
Baker - 6. I thought he was a weak link. One or two good forward runs but not
as solid as Kiltch.
Bamford - 6. Scored a good goal and looks like he's got a nice left foot but he
should have had a hat-trick. Bit of a dilemma here because I think he needs
games but it looks like he'll be stuck on the bench for a while.
3 games, 3 wins so all good but I think there's a few concerns.

He is indeed capturing our hearts. With his style, could those who go to
ER comment on what changes he has made to the pitch size. Narrower or
wider? On one hand top play a pressing game would lean to a narrow pitch
but wing backs may point to a wider one.

Not bad but I prefer the one on waccoe translated from a French newspaper
(L'equipe) - especially the bit about 'degreasing' the squad by letting so
many players leave and references to dirty Leeds (according to them based on

It does describe the union between him and us as 'incongruous"

You know when Bielsa took the job and said that he'd watched every single
Leeds game from last season? Appears that's just the tip of his

filmed in preparation for tonight."

Definitely not the best ever in terms of quality of football. But in terms of
entertainment? Sure - it took until yesterday's turgid few hours of dullness to
remind me what the World Cup was usually like, especially in the knock-out
stages.

Thankfully, there's only on more all-European tie left in this round, because
that's where the fun usually drains away.

I think Spain 10 years ago were brilliant, but it didn't do them much good this
time. Keeping posession is one thing, but being ambivalent about creating any
chances is another. They were so dull for most of the World Cup - given the
quality of players they have then what a waste that they really couldn't switch
into a tippy-tappy Mk 2 where creation of chances outsrips the desire to have
the ball.
What do others think about the standard of teams at this World Cup. The 'Best
World Cup Ever' comments are, imho, ridiculous. Some very average teams,
petulant and ridiculous defending/over-reacting. France looked very good
against Argentina, Croatia looked great (and very dirty) in the group but were
outplayed by Denmark yesterday and should have lost, Brazil, average as yet,
Russia - 2 excellent group games of old-skool togger, followed by a drubbing
from Uruguay. England - doing Ok to very good, but not yet played a decent team
with their first eleven - hope they can progress though and think they will.
But Greatest World Cup ever - do they not remember Jairzinho, Rivelino, Total
Football, even Germany v Brazil last time out?
I might change my mind if England win it though :-)

As the German coach of the time put it after their semi final defeat in

was given some time? Can't see the experts keeping quiet with this guy. He
delights in playing players out of position, making weird substitutions and
generally not giving a fcuk what the fans think. He doesn't speak English,

The main worry with Bielsa would be that he has had 9 club jobs and none of
them lasted more than about 2 years.

Which in many ways makes him the ideal candidate for us, of course!

Lille was a disaster though. Ambitious owner with vision...

The pedigree of players he has managed is amazing, could he cope with Kalvin
Phillips and O’kane ??

Also he might be able to attract a better quality of player

Re: [LU] Heckingbottom surprised at sacking rumours

2018-04-12 Thread Nigel Sykes
The smoke has well and truly cleared and the mirrors have been smashed. I saw
a table yesterday that listed Championship clubs by the ratio of wages to
turnover. Out of all the clubs in the division (except Barnsley, for whom the
figures weren't available) Leeds were bottom with 61%. 13 clubs had higher
wage bills than turnover, with Blackburn topping the madness list at 147%.

Now, putting aside the fiscal advisability of paying more than you make, and
given that we must surely have one of the highest turnovers in the league, one
has to ask how we can ever compete with our apparent "spend nowt and hope"
attitude.

Where is that other 39% of turnover going?

How can he be surprised given the results and performances since he came in ?
Two most worrying quotes, to me. "We’re going to have to work hard because
we’ve seen the calibre of players who are in this league, the calibre of clubs.
But it doesn’t mean we can’t do it if we’re all on the same page,
over-achieving and building a hungry, competitive squad."and then "It’ll be a
smaller squad and a hungrier squad"
Why, when we have the biggest crowds, most TV appearances and right up there
with biggest income (bar parachute payments) , can't we buy that calibre of
player so that they just need to do well not 'over-achieve' ?Also given that,
due to injuries we are playing two non full backs as full back and will be
starting with at least one young inexperienced centre half and no recognised
midfield player on the bench v Villa, isn't the squad already too small ?

I don't think it is just Saiz that Heck needs to get the best out of. He
has to find a combination and formation that gets the best out of all of
them.

As has been mentioned before, Only Jannson, Forshaw, Saiz and Hernandez (+
Ayling injured) look capable of performing well enough on a regular basis.
To be fair to Berardi, he is steady enough and even the much-maligned Cooper
is less error-prone than last year.

Of the others, I believe that Lasogga, Roofe, Alioski, Dallas, Vieira,
Phillips, O'Kane all have something to offer.
The problem is that they either have more flaws than attributes or are just
so inconsistent as to be unreliable.

Heck has to work out where/how to play them, to maximise their strengths and
hide their weaknesses.
Then work out what the f*** to do about the left-back and goalkeeper
positions, because Wiedwald and De Bock are too error prone to even make it
into the group above. If 5 of the 7 in that group play at their best we
can beat Wolves. If none do, we'll get hammered.

Cheers Nick. I've spent over 40 years watching Leeds week in week out so I like
to think I've got the measure of most players I watch.
Most players can be gauged within 4-5 games but I'd say the exception to this
is the centre back position and strikers. I've seen players arrive at Leeds who
look like a fish out of water. Chris Fairclough, Peter Haddock and Rio were all
awful on their debuts and first few appearances but all turned out to be good
signings ( not sure Rio lived up to his fee?).
In terms of strikers they tend to be rated until they come to Leeds - Keith
Edwards, Jim Melrose, Derek Parlane, George McCluskey, Noel Hunt, Barn door
Billy Painter, Darren Huckerby, Ian Rush to name a few.

But midfielders just stand out. They just need to make themselves available,
take the ball, and give it to someone. Easy ? No. David Batty was the best I've
ever seen at this. He is everything I've ever loved about football. Such
simplicity but brilliantly effective in making a team tick. Olivier Dacourt was
also good at this but he added a driving ability which allowed him to be more
attacking. Both truly great midfielders.

O'Kane has no awareness. Watch him when he gets the ball. He's head down , one
dimensional. It's either a pass backward or he just motors forward with no real
intention. Batty was ultra aware of his team mates. He got the ball, looked up
and passed but then looked how he can help. He was the cog at the heart of the
machine. It's a shame that O'Kane will never be able to perform at even 25%
effectiveness of David Batty , but that's why Bournemouth let him go !

We are Leeds!

I don't have too much of a problem with the salute. But the badge is awful
- like an MLS badge, or a kids' team.

But, someone put it quite eloquently on Twitter - saying that the salute is
an unspoken thing between Leeds fans. Like a masonic handshake or whatever.
If you know about it, you know about it. Putting it out there on the badge
smacks of something wrong... commercialism maybe. Whatever.
