Re: [LU] Stoke

2024-03-06 Thread Ed Morrish
Yeah; there's been some discussion on the WhatsApp about this, and my
position is that I want Leeds United Football Club to win every match, and
that means being in the Premier League next season. And I don't think we'll
be Sheffield United, because we're better-resourced and better-experienced;
they don't have a Rutter or a Summerville, and they certainly don't have an
Archie Gray. But we have to accept that for the first few seasons back,
we'll be in the lower half, and allow DF/the 49ers the time to slowly build
up the club, season by season and signing by signing.

I want to see us on MOTD, and hear us talked about. Yes, we had our

Won't we be better prepared this time? (IF we go up) With better investment

On the way home, the radio Leeds team saw it differently and seemed to

half from NE Upper!

3 points is all that matters at this stage tho, all we can do is win and

Re: [LU] Stoke

2024-03-06 Thread Robert Heath
The pattern of that match was v similar to the Plymouth home cuptie. In the
2nd half they started to press and with a 1-0 lead Farke evidently
instructed Meslier not to pass out from the back, but the succession of
long balls just kept giving them the ball back. Thankfully the difference
was that they didn't score this time!

Re the timewasting, the thing that gets me is the amount of time the keeper
stands with the ball in his hands. He is supposed to release it before 6
secs but it is a rule universally ignored by refs. Apparently, FIFA have
finally noticed and they're planning to give the keeper 2 more secs but
enforce the rule and give the attacking team a throwin or a corner as a
penalty. Excellent idea in my view, but it won't come in for a while yet,
if ever. (The current penalty, if it was ever called, is an indirect
freekick in the box, and apparently refs don't want to give that as it is
too extreme.)

2024-03-06 Thread nattan--- via Leedslist
Following the absolute ecstasy of the Leicester game, this was absolute relief,
especially as the literal last kick of the game was a brilliant chance to them
inside the area , poorly struck and well saved by Mes.Ā  All game we wanted (
and felt we needed that second to ensure the 3 pts.
First half was comfortable,Ā  with stoke offering nothingĀ  Ā bar one long range
shot by Lewis baker that Mes tipped over. Their keeper on the other hand was
having a blinder- lucky to get away with a foul on the excellent Dan James
which should have been a penalty,Ā  then unlucky with the goal, another
deflected shot finding its way in, this time by James. He saved well twice from
James,Ā  once from Bamford after a lovely chipped pass by Georginio ( who also
headed over), as we totally dominated the first half.
Second half was a totally different proposition as we started to look leggy and
tired , losing our zest, and they took some control, and suddenly Meslier was
the much busier keeper. The second half was best illustrated when their lad
skipped past Ampadu but shot straight at Mes . " thats the first time ive seen
someone skin Ampadu all season " was my sons comment.
We were not exactly hanging on but we were under the cosh and unfortunately we
could not get the second despite the best efforts of the impressive Matteo
Josep, on for Bamford,Ā  he did well to win the ball and round the keeper but
could not get real purchase on his shot that was cleared on the line. His next
effort just fizzed by the far post. James also had a chance when one on one
with the keeper but shot straight into the keepers face.Ā  The sending off of
their lad for a 2nd yellow did not affect much as stoke continued to control
the game and looked for an equaliser.Ā  Thankfully due to poor finishing,Ā  good
goal keeping and resolute defending we kept them out for the 3pts we needed (
f**king Ipswich ruining our happiness on the bus back to leeds as they turned
1-2 into 3-2 - leif davis's name being shouted down the bus as he got their
winner)We need to win on Friday and then the players can take a well earned few
days off, its been relentless but there is no room for slip ups and sheff
Wednesday is a ' must-win" , mind you aren't they all at this stage?
On a different point any refs on here know the rules re time wasting ? They
wasted time ( not quite Huddersfield standard) from the first minute,Ā  the
keeper taking an age over everything but the ref just ignored it all, then half
way through the second half Mes did the same and suddenly the ref is hurrying
him up and pointing at his watch. Is it only something the ref cares about if a
team are winning or in theĀ  last 15 minutes? It is something that has been very
noticeable this season
Anyway, another 3 pts, more relief than joy but the wheels keep on churning.
The players just need to keep going and find that last bit of energyĀ

[LU] Stoke caribou cup(sic)

2019-08-27 Thread nat...@sky.com

An amazing turn out of over 30k for a midweek game in the caribou cup mainly
comprised of non season ticket holders if my area of the ground is anything to
go by - 3 of the 7 of us were absent and I barely recognised anyone near me ,
such is the allure of Bielsaball and cheap tickets.
One way or another the crowd got its money's worth.Ā Ā
8 changes meant that we were very disjointed at times in the first half
evidenced by the fact that we allowed volks a free header early on that luckily
was right at kiko - not sure why Meslier did not start. We improved a bit and
had a couple of long range efforts the best of these was a cracker by Nketiah
on the edge of the box that hit the post.
We fell behind ,surprise surprise,Ā  to a corner that should not have been
given, another free header and this time kiko could only push it into the net.
Minutes later things went from bad to worse when Phillips was left for dead and
the cross was tapped home , a good move by them to be fair
So 2 down at hal time. Even worse the great young Hope's from last season
Clarke and shackleton were totally anonymous as was the debutant McAlmont and
we expected at least one to be subbed. In the event Bielsa went for it and
subbed all 3 ! A gamble that paid off.
We looked a different team and took control as they tired.Ā  It took a bit of
luck to score the first as butland kicked the ball out and it hit his defender
on the back and fell to Nketiah, in some ways it was an easy chance but I know
many players who would have messed it up, Eddie on the other hand fini9it with
aplomb,Ā  putting the ball through butland legs and then just strolling into the
net with it, a class finish. We came close on a few other occasions as Nketiah
just failed to get a tap in at the far post.
The equaliser came with a lovely cross by Davis that went over Eddie but was
headed home by Costa.Ā We tried hard but could not find a winner and so to
pens.Douglas Costa Phillips and Nketiah all scored with no scares but they
started and scored all 5 fairly easily and so Harrison needed to score for
sudden death but hit the post -the crowd chanted his name so no hard feelings.Ā
A fun night and no feal harm done- Bielsa and one of his staff did get booked

2019-08-24 Thread Richard Naef
I think Berardi had a decent game as well, still not sure he's good enough to
be our back up CH, but his temperament has improved and looks more like a
Bielsa player than last season. Overall the squad looks much better than last
season.

This was the best game by a team wearing Leeds United uniforms Iā€™ve seen in a
very, very long time. Itā€™s all the more amazing because it was the same players
(save Doug) as the bad old days of last season. The difference, clearly and
unambiguously, was the coaching. To call it ā€œpossession footballā€ misses the
point, as does calling it ā€œattacking football.ā€ It was possession with a
purpose. It was fast, yes, but not so much speed of foot as speed of thought.

There are questions for the future. Is the team fit enough to play this style
for a whole season? How will the three additions who didnā€™t feature heavily in
the game bed in with the team. Can Bamford play that style?

But the players out there on Sunday certainly bought into what Bielsa was
selling and as long as that happens this will be an enjoyable year.

[LU] Stoke

2018-08-06 Thread nat...@sky.com
I am still buzzing over the performance and result yesterday -

I am now expecting a full house or near enough v Rotherham , surely anyone who
was there yesterday will want to come back and see if we can do it every game,
and anyone who missed it must be gutted and want to ensure they do not miss out
next time
To get that sort of performance from a team containing 9 of last years regulars
- only Douglas and Klitch were 'new' additions. Our general level of play was
great and all our goals were really well worked (albeit Butland should have
saved the second) and we kept a supposedly good Stoke team to one long range
effort, a penalty, and a header over the bar when Crouch caused a bit of havoc

We have Pontus to come back, and then players like Bamford, Roberts, Baker and
Harrison to show us what they can do (plus some good youngsters in Edmunson,
Clarke and Pearce at the very least)

The players have bought into the Bielsa philosophy and are following his
instructions

We all know it is a long hard season and there will be downs as well as ups
along the way but this season has a real vibe about it now.

Well that was everything we wanted and more. That was as good a performance and
result as we have had for years, especially for the opening game of the season.
I can still recall Ā£1m Luke Murphy getting a last minute winner v Brighton in
front of a full house and a brilliant end to the Bates years. That game and
owner soon petered out so I am trying not to get too carried away today but

As I posted earlier I was really up and buzzing for this one , there is just
something so special for the first game of the season in the sunshine. My
optimism lasted all the train journey with my son, and the first twenty minutes
in the pub but it was a case of "what will Toe think?" a proper Leeds fan who
manages to make our own RW look optimistic and happy.

We were not to be disappointed as Toe proceeded to tell us that we had kept all
last seasons shit and that the two decent additions (Douglas and maybe Bamford
- big question marks in his view re Bamford) and his prediction (following on
from last years 15th prediction) was for relegation, yes actual going down. Any
team with Cooper, Phillips and Berardi had no chance- we could not dissuade him
from this relegation even when we pointed out that Warnock had got promoted
with Peltier and Bamba in the first team. The announcement of the team that
would start -ten of last years failures plus Douglas did nothing to help in our
argument that MB was the man

So with Toe putting a bit of a damper on things we had a early visit to the
ground - time to find my Bremner statue brick and a pint in the ground. The
lads on the bus did cheer us up a bit with a great song that did a countdown of
"3 3 1 3-Ā  h Marcelo Bielsa, h he came from Argentina, h he has a
f*cking handgrenade, h 3 3 1 3 " ( he once pulled a hand granade on
disgruntled fans)
Anyway the atmosphere around the ground was brilliant - a real wall of noise. A
good homage to Paul Madeley wiht the SS holding up placards that read "Eleven
Pauls" as per the song
So after all the nonsense the game kicked off and we were brilliant , from the
1st to the 90th minute, from 1 to 11 we were great. Everyone had bought into
the MB philosophy and did what he had asked, all the time being roared on by a
crowd that believed in the new vision and the new future
Stoke and their fans did not know what hit them - we were on top of them from
the kick off, closing them down, chasing every ball , getting stuck in - all
behind a backdrop of ER being electric and raising the roof.
Without the ball we never game them a second to settle - with the ball , we
passed and moved with a skill and fluidity that was missing for years.
Pre game my mate, who is friends with a Stoke fan told me how their message
boards were full of how they had a Premiership quality keeper, defence and
midfield, and how thankful they were that they had kept Joe Allen, the 'best
midfielder in the Division'
Well not today - we carved them open almost at will -Klitch so impressive that
it made me wonder what Christianson knew about football ! In fact at half time
my son showed me something on the BBC website that said " If Klitch forces poor
Joe Allen any further back he'll be in 2016 and playing for Liverpool again"
We really were that convincing
Our great play was rewarded when Saiz - the fulcrum for all our play - beat two
players and put a lovely ball through to the onrushing Klicth who finished with
an equisite chip. Football as it should be played. We totally dominated and tore
them apart - their one move of note a speculative long range shot from Ince
*your Dads a c..t and so are you' that hit the bar. A move totally against the
run of play
We got lucky just before half time when a shot from Pablo went under the keeper
and into the corner of the net (When Butland came out for the second half in
front of the Revie stand he was met with chant of "shit Jordan PIckford, youre
just a " to be fair he laughed and clapped us
So 2 up at half time - could we keep it up ?

Well yes we could - a scramble in the box led to them getting a pen (could not
see who or why) that they scored to bring them back into it - or at least in
theory. A minute later yet another great move ended with a lovely cross by
alioski that they headed behind for a corner,Ā  Douglas showed what he was about
as his corner was met by Cooper who glanced home - two goal cushion restored
MB took off the impressive Kilich for Dallas who messed up a great chance as we
continued to dominateCrouch came on and his height caused a few problems but
BPF was up to it and we saw the game out
A brilliant and desreved 3 1 win against one of the favuourite and done with
style and aplomb
If this is what the season holds it will be a good one - we were excellent and
all the fans went home delirioulsy happy
Long mayi it continue

2018-08-05 Thread {broken-address} Richard Walker
What a great day and what a great performance.Ā
Yes we've had false dawns before including last year's opening win against
Bolton but I sense that this was different. Bolton were poor and still scored 2
whereas I felt Stoke are a good side that wanted to play at their pace but we
just never let them.Ā
As 45 minutes go I think that's the best I've seen for some years and given
that this is the same side apart from 1 player that Heckingbottom had I think
it's clear that the manager has made a massive statement of intent. I always
criticised Hecky because I couldn't work out what he had brought to the team ?
There was no new manager affect and the players just seemed to be going through
the motions. Today was a different system and a different style that I can only
compare to the impact Wilko made when he joined the club. High tempo, high
pressure football, interlaced with some great pass and move football which at
times was breathtaking. Everyone seemed comfortable on the ball and everyone
comfortable with their positions. I criticised his team selection beforehand
and I wondered how he was going to make a mid table team of mediocrity compete
with the bookies favourite for promotion? Well, now it all makes sense. He
picked the players that he has spent the Summer working with and the players
who have had time to buy in to and play in the way he wants. I suspect he only
really knew that it would work after today but all credit to him, the team were
magnificent.Ā
I think every player looked 20% fitter than last season. The system worked
incredbily well and Cooper and Beradi were never exposed because there was
always other players helping out. Philips, who I have said can't be a top
midfielder because of his lack of pace and acceleration played a blinder in a
role that suits him down to the ground. He sits back, chases, harries, tackles
and breaks up play and then quickly gives the ball to Siaz and co to move
forward. He looked very comfortable.
Roofe cannot play as a lone striker especially at home so I've said many times.
Am I now going to have reassess my opinion on this and actually have I writte
Roofe off too earlier as a '3rd division striker' ? He never really looked like
scoring today but bloody hell I thought he played well. He looks fitter with a
bit more muscle and an extra yard of pace. That doesn't make him fast but it
does give him a 50:50 chance to get to the balls he was unable to last season
and he never stopped right through to the 5 mins of injury time where he was
still running for what looked like lost causes. I still think he needs to
improve his distribution but there's obviously a role for him in this team as
he never looked isolated with Hernandez, Siaz, Allioski and Klitch all
supporting with every attack.Ā
and what about Klitch ? I always thought he looked like a player but he looked
to lack fitness and pace last season. He looks like Paul Madelely now, majestic
on the ball and always harrying to win the ball back. His goal was a great run
and finish. What a player.Ā
I'm not going to go through all the first half chances but we could have been 3
or 4 up. The movement and play at times was sensational and crowd were on their
feet cheering and clapping like I've never heard before.Ā
Amongst all the great play and performances , Siaz for me stood out in the
first half. Absolutley brilliant play and he seemed to be back to his best and
I think again this is down to fitness. He looked very fit and strong and like
Roofe chased everything. He makes things tick, play the killer ball and also
beat players with ease. There were rumours that he was going but surely on this
performance Bielsa will never let him leave.Ā
Playing out from the back always makes me nervous especially with players who
really don't have the ability to do so and yes, today there were a couple of
blips - Beradi played a poor ball and immediately Mclean was through and only
brilliant anticipation on Cooper's part prevented a goal. Also Douglas had a
little slip and Ince too control but he recovered brillianty. I think Ince is a
very lively player and he hit the bar with a great shot in the first half but
apart from that we stifled him and he got really frustrated.Ā
2-0 at half-time thanks to some really dodgy keeping from the ex-Leeds keeper.
Second half, we continued to press but I do think we ran out of steam
particularly Klitch who I think slowed significantly and maybe should have come
off sooner. Stoke took control and we defended desperately at time and also
time wasted to run downthe clock. Despite this we still remained a threat on
the break and could have had more.Ā
I couldn't see what happened for the pen but it looked like we seemed to have
defended the cross and got it clear but it somehow came back and fell to a
Stoke player who was hacked down (Philips ?). Credit to us though because
rather than panicking we went straight up the other end, won a corner
