Fully agree!
Let’s get after them. If we have a strength it’s in the attack.

There’s no point in sitting back with the worst defence in the league.

Re: [LU] Tonight etc

2023-01-04 Thread Neil Hackett
Two points I suppose.

The players look like they still want to be playing for Marsch. They are still
working very hard.

Moyes must be under even more pressure. They have spent a lot of money and are
really struggling. Their new striker has 2 goals. No one is fully sold on
Rodrigo and he has 9.

On the plus side since the point Marsch looked certain to be sacked
we've taken 7 points from 5 games which was a brutal run of Liverpool /
Bournemouth / Spurs / City / Newcastle and now it gets easier

On the flipside i have no idea how we did that and havent seen any real
change in the tactics in the friendlies or the 2 games back - so dont
feel over confident going forward. It still feels like we are relying
on 3 teams being worse than us, more than us playing our way out of
trouble.

Ironically for a team that Marsch wants to play narrow - with the
emergence of Gnonto and Summerville we now have more wingers than ever.

that makes sense) and puts a lot of teams plus a few points between us
and the drop.
A defeat and we stay firmly in the relegation fight and it makes our
hard won / lucky point at Newcastle almost worthless, we need to build
on decent results.
We also need to start beating the bad teams beginning tonight, and then
getting points in the next half dozen games which are mainly winnable.
A win also means we can try for a cup run starting on Sunday but a
defeat may mean treating the cup as an unwelcome sideshow and mean
putting out a reserve side

Yeah, I was wondering if somehow that was aimed at me, but given I like change
I let it ride :-) I wasn’t even moaning - I thought we did ok!

The one thing us old timers are guilty of, and it’s something DRB said to me at
a game v Yeovil a few years back, is comparing what we see on the pitch now,
with what we remember. There is no point wondering why Barry Douglas can’t
dribble like Terry Cooper, why Phillips can’t pass like Johnny Giles, in fact
even why Bamford can’t put himself about like Yogi Baird! Then and now is
irrelevant.

So, I’m happy with things now. 2 wins and a draw, a few young uns blooded, and
at the moment a team who look like contenders.

Now, if the Rhinos can beat St Helens tomorrow night all will be right with the
world.

Teams have figured out (ever since last April) that the way to counter
Bielsaball is to literally put your whole team into your own box. We need
to really work on our long range shooting, as indeed Phillips seems to be
doing already. Last year I seem to recall that he did try a few longshots
and I think they all sailed miles over...this year, he has already
had two shots tipped over by good saves (the other was v Cagliari, IIRC).

True.
Thought the off the ball movement from Costa and Eddie was excellent for the
first goal, as was shack’s pass.
This is going to be an obstacle for us to overcome in most games. Teams will
sit deep, pack the box and try to hit us on the break.
I thought Phillips had a decent game, Alioski looked poor and I was impressed
by Eddie and Costa.

Re: [LU] Tonight

2019-08-14 Thread Guy Thornton
Enough of this ageism please. I've been following Leeds since we where in the
second division (that's second
division I said, not league one) and on the list since pretty well it's
inception when the Rev. Gav started it and
ran it from Oxford (I even paid homage to the machine it was on in the uni
computer bank).

I have no problem with change, just not change for changes sake or
Risdale'esque idiocy type chance. Of
course it's necessary for progress or we'd still be clogging, sorry running
round on the pitch in shorts down to
the knees, huffing and puffing from those fags at half time, probably getting
concussion heading leather balls
and the terraces would be full of flat caps whippets with people moaning about
the common market (oh sorry,
they still are a la brexit) so youngsters, grumpsters, granddads lay of the
jibes.

And yes, I noticed what you did but was double parody intended not only
referring to Leeds fans but replying to
a mail from Da Rev, aka John Lee?

Lemoaners (see what i did there) would be happy if we lose, cos the problem
with a list with an average age of 130 is old gits don't like change.

Oh My Lord! Does anyone on the list require the number for the
Samaritans? I read the mails posted during the game and just had to
double check … Yes, we DID win! Wasn't so sure looking at the doom
mongers.

We WON a game we would quite probably (Not possibly) have lost in
seasons past, Histon anyone?
We WON the game reasonably comfortably against the lower league upstarts
who have spent MILLIONS to get to League 2 and are a half decent 'up and
at em' outfit.
We WON the game playing half a dozen players who were either making
their first starts or were, as they were last year, teenagers.
We WON the 3rd game of a very long season with no injuries and many of
the players (Costa, Eddie, McAlmont, White) Still adapting to Marcelo
and his methods.

Christ on a bike knows what it'll be like when we lose ….

It's 0113 245 6789 for all you Leeds based lads BTW

I hope Shackleton can get into our first 11 regularly - I don’t see

Yes for me that was the highlight of the game. He needed a goal and the
acceleration he showed to get the ball was fantastic. Hope he can push on now.

We’ve lost games like this before so it’s got to go down as a good result
however I found it incredibly frustrating to watch at times. The amount of
misplaced passes throughout the 95 minutes was criminal.

Last 10 mins we switched Clarke on the left

Played it down a bit more, too control more

Not sure why we took control, it’s why I’m sitting on my sofa eating Nando’s in
my boxers and bielsa sits on a bucket and earns £1m plus a year

Either way, we did and the cross came from the right ...
Whilst we look vulnerable from crosses and direct balls, corners etc. You can’t
really fault the football or continued attempts at football and teams of recent
vintages would have panicked and retreated and this one has done the opposite
and pressed higher and higher and Salford sat back and paid the price

Not quite the high tempo football we get week in week out but great finish

Re: [LU] Tonight

2019-08-13 Thread Richard walker via Leedslist
Fucking awful half. Really painful to watch. So many wayward passes.

If there was ever a half to demonstrate Kelvin Philips averageness then this is
it. Misplaced passes and outrun by a Salford midfielder. To be fair he’s not
the only one but it’s painful for him to have so much ball in midfield.

Leif Davis looks out of his depth as a left back to me.

Thank God for “ Eddie, Eddie, Eddie”.

80% possession FFS.

Re: [LU] Tonight

2019-08-13 Thread Simon McNally
It’s been a familiar pattern this half, loads of possession but very little end
product. Excellent goal though - superb ball from shack, good cross from costa
and good movement from Eddie.
The crossing one is a worry. We completed 4 out of 34 against forest. I think
it’s two things - poor delivery but also a lack of height in the middle. With
no one really to aim at we have to thread the perfect ball which makes the
crosser look worse than they actually are.

I think we’re relying on Phillips to score from centre mid

Alisoki needs a haircut

 Thoughts on tonight's game?

If you park up who it is and the crap that goes with it.

Is it probably the best thing if we lose? Even if they are a poor league 2 side.

Personally, I hate losing games, it becomes a habit. We've become used to
getting turned over in upsets - more so than before since we fell.

This season, more than ever, if we don't go up, I think we'll be marooned here
forever. FPP, or the FL equivalent will be worse and worse the longer it goes
on (as parachute payments get more and more and creative accounting gets more
and more arcane)

Bielsa is only tied to one more year (currently) and I really can't see him
sticking around again if we don't go up.

He doesn't seem to care about cups - witness that abject performance against
QPR last season. I don't even remember the Preston game in the LC.

He also seems to want to stick with a small squad and we don't realistically
have a chance in any of them, so less games is better?

I believe winning is a habit.

Maybe Clarke, Costa and the new forward/striker can get a game, ditto
Shackleton. Although win, lose or draw, he seems to prefer to stick with the
same team, either as a 'I believe in them' or a 'he has another chance to prove

I think he'll go for it - he understands the history and he knows what it means
in football terms. Nketia, Bogus, Costa, Clarke and Alioski can all get a run
out, stick a few of the U23 on the bench to get a game when we are 5 nil up.

A bit worrying on the Bamford front, is he still carrying that knock? He

Some more thoughts:
Roofe - after a couple of decent games I thought he was poor last night. He
doesn't look to have the stature / presence or the legs to really threaten
defences.
Bartley - I thought he was ok but I think recently he's looked a bit more like
Sol Bamba than his earlier performances. Still solid though.
Doukara - I thought he really struggled in what was basically a midfield role.
When he went up front on his own he won more headers than Wood has won all
season but was pretty ineffective (apart from his excellent pen).
Mowatt - I hate slapping this guy down but I think last night really exposed
his limitations. He came on and was asked to chase up front and close down
Reading. He couldn't do it and within 10 minutes he was blowing out of his
arse. I felt really sorry for him as people around me really gave him dogs
abuse. I think you have to be realistic though and say he aint gonna make it in
a top championship team. For me he's a bit like Mcphail in that he's got a nice
left foot but to be effective he needs to be playing in a midfield full of
runners who can cover. Mcphail had Bowyer and co.
Green - made a couple of really good saves but he doesn't fill me with
confidence when he's flapping around his area. He did one bad kick which the
Kop got on to him for and he lifted his finger up to indicate it was his only
mistake. Fair play.

This was classic Ali v Foreman stuff. We absorbed all their pressure and they
had loads of it and then hit them on the counter. If this was Monk's strategy
from the off in a home game then I'd give him manager of the year now. I
suspect we came up against a better footballing side ( a much better) and had
to defend and chase like mad and feed off scraps on the break.

Our defence is very well organised now and with Vierra and Bridcutt sat in
front like2 little terriers , Reading had to be content to just pass it around
without making much progress. Our fans were actually holaying their passes such
their ineffectiveness.

I was however surprised to hear Adam Pope on RL on the drive home saying we had
taken apart with perfect performance - that is really stretching it and for
that to be true you have to believe in the Ali v Foreman strategy and I don't
think we would ever set out to defend at home like we did tonight.

Best players - Jansson - immense, his block on the line in the 94th minute and
his reaction to the South Stand was true hero stuff. He is the best defender we
have had since the Premier League. The Wham song however is a total
embarrassment.

Dallas - ok I'm still not sure what position he plays in but he looked sharp
and full of energy and helped us get them in the break.

Sacko - if he had a brain he'd be lethal but again he was crucial to us
breaking with pace. Scared them to death and make Wood's goal.

Vierra - love this kid, ran all day and still wanted more. He's our best
midfielder.

Bridcutt - looked a little leg heavy but he grew into the game and I like him
because he does all the simple stuff really well like break up play and get
moves going. Great little player.

Grimes - yes I said it against Brighton, I think he has more to offer and he
showed it when he came on last night. He's got a bit of grit about him and he's
got a nice left foot. I think he will challenge for that left midfield place.

Re: [LU] Tonight

2016-12-13 Thread {broken-address} Richard Walker
We've been second best all over the park but still win 2-0 - they are a really
hard team to play against - great character from us.

Doing it against Villa I thought was a fluke but doing it again tonight just
can't be.

Strong defence from us

Yes they're all praising the team selection on RL but I think it's a disaster
He's dropped our best player from Saturday, playing our best midfielder out of
position on the right wing
and then Murphy and Adeyemi together in the middle.
Let's f;king hope his motivational skills win the day.

yeah, disappointed but we played Ok with 10 men and for quite a time with a
mainly second string team.  Let down by 2 awful penalties.  Think 2 games is a
bit soon to write us off, I'll give it until half time on Sunday.

At least Rosler now knows neither Doukara and Wooton need ever darken the doors
of the first team.

Those have got to be of the worst penalties in the history of the game !
UnbelievableOn Sat we were discussing who would be our penalty taker this
season (Sharp and Austin took the few we got last time) and I said I could
not see Woods being the man - how correct I was (not that £9m star Byrams
was any better) Now we go to Reading on Sunday knackered (compared to
them) after playing most of the game with ten men and then having extra
time too, and all for nothing Dave

Bellusci - 7. Battled well.

Cooper - 6 Did ok.

Wooton - 3. Poor and out of position

Cook - 0 Stupid boy, lost us the game

Mowatt - 3 Always looks a yard short to me. Slimfast a possibility ?

Doukara - 4 Poor control. Out of position.

Dallas - 6. Our liviliest forward

Antenucci - 6. Worked hard on scraps.

Subs:

Murphy - 3. Everything he does is shit. THe poor corners, the overhit passes,
Just shit.

Woods - 1. Big lump.

Byram - 4. Ran around but he really disappointed me with his lack of strength
and intelligence. As for his pen !

Rosler - clown. David Hockaday with a German accent.

On Woods, and this is before he missed his pen. I was disappointed with him on
Satdi and tonight he did look like a donkey.

What a terrible match and what an awful performance from us. Some shocking
tactics from Rosler but overall I think you can see that there;s a few players
in that team that still arent good enough for this league.

Oh fuck, here we go again.

2014-08-12 Thread Andy Clayton
The one and only thing I liked about the Bates GFH era was that we never
heard any sniff of a player coming in (on the odd occasion it happened)
before it actually happened.

I'm learning to ignore these reports of players at ER/TA etc. FFS - even
Sorenson was pictured on Facebook drinking in the Peacock posing outside
ER.

Looks like it's all part of Massimo's ego lack of maturity (keep your
mouth shut).

Will probably be full of kids with the children for a £1 promotion that
the League Cup organisers have insisted upon. Whilst it may be annoying to

All been quiet on Poleon front (have read one 'guess' that he may be off

To many on there it is a totally nothing game that should not even take

beneath contempt for the discerning fan.
All this because it is a game which is unlikely to account for anything -
but if fans have this attitude then the crowds in the Prem are going to be
very low for a very long time.
The chances of us getting into a position in the Prem in the foreseeable
future when we are playing to win the league or get into Europe are slim
indeed. So once we have made sure we are not being relegated then the
'waccoe fan' reckons the season is over.
So teams like Norwich or Southampton who are safe have had nothing to play
for since Christmas and every year in the Prem there have been 5 or 6 teams
who pretty much knew before the season started that they are not going to
challenge at the top and are not really likely to get relegated (think
Bolton for 6 years under Big Sam or Blackburn pre Venkys )- good solid mid
table teams and that is the best we can aspire to in the foreseeable

Thankfully our new manager sees things in a more positive way and so the
18k or so of us who are going tonight (or maybe a few less?) will hopefully
see a win and good football

On tonight’s clash, he added: “First and foremost, you want to win. But I
also want the team to play well and pass the ball and enjoy the game.
“I also want the crowd to get into the game and enjoy the experience.
“You want to win with a certain style as well. But if you can’t, then win.”

I have no confidence in our keeper I'm afraid, we seem to have a much better
number one and a much worse backup. Lack of games begat lack of confidence or
is he just not of the required standard?

On a different subject, but one that will amuse me for weeks to come yet, my
new favourite expression is:- I'm busier than the scoreboard operator at old

I'd be surprised/delighted if we managed to not lose tonight.

1-0 Leeds. A comedy collision involving naylor in Donny defence leaves an
unmarked Pugh to volley home for 5 yards. Great stuff.

Spelt correctly Mike:

Ok, let me see if I've got this straight. In order to be grounded, I've
got to be crazy. And I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be
grounded, that means I'm not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.

Re: [LU] tonight

2011-01-19 Thread Andy Pyzer

Agreed, Al jazeera boys were right, too many silly mistakes but against an Arse
team that meant it tonight. Paynter was crap IMO but to be fair we never really
gave him a chance as we lost it too much in midfield. At least they had to
bring on Van Persie and Fabregas to see us off, a compliment for sure. We need
to focus on the rest of our season and remain consistent, play offs are a real
chance this year, promotion not sure, but we have all said at teh start of the
season that mid table this season was a realistic goal.

MOT

PS Thanks for the updates of games I can't see here in Oman, means a lot to get
viewpoints and match reports, fans were great tonight and I had to laugh at the
Arsenal fans they seemed in good voice too, fair play.

Petty squables aside I appreciate the banter here.

 Why? What's he done?

Watching Johnson tonight was thinking how much he's improved - from
when he wasn't really good enough for the 3rd Division, and he comes
up with that goal. Yet, post match on al-jazeera (parlour and
stapleton), he was at fault for all their goals, not staying with his
man. On reflection, as said earlier, rather than a game vs
huddersfield in a cup we ain't gonna win, rather than ruing the
misfortune of the late penalty at the emirates, hopefully the lads
feel confidence AND picked up some career enhancing education.
Felt proud of leeds tonight. started well, worked hard to get back in
game, forced the Arse to put cesc and persie on, and showed their
desire and frustrated hopes with silly bookings at the end, let's hope
this year they want to go and do better in the games to come.
