FIND OUT ABOUT BELL SHAKESPEARE'S PREVIEW PRICE FOR AS YOU LIKE IT

The Bell Shakespeare Company is bringing its latest production - As You
Like It to Melbourne next week.

Shakespeare's Rosalind is one of the stage's most memorable female

'We of Little Voice'

'Trespass'

This event offers a unique opportunity to view two new Australian
documentaries on the one bill.

WHEN: Wednesday July 9th
WHERE: Cinema Nova, Lygon St, Carlton
TIME: 7pm

TICKETS $10/$7
available at the Nova Box office ph:93495201
Please pre-purchase tickets if possible.

We of Little Voice
Synopsis
We of Little Voice reveals the effects of uranium mining and nuclear
testing on indigenous communities in South Australia. In the 1950's the
British Government tested nuclear bombs in northern South Australia.
These days, there are mines and waste dumps. The indigenous communities
in the region have concerns about how the fallout from the testing and
the risks of mining leaks impact on their communities.

Indigenous anti-nuclear campaigner, Kevin Buzzacot, goes on a journey
through northern South Australia to hear the stories of Aboriginal
elders who have experienced the effects of the nuclear industry.

This is the first time many of these elders have told their stories to
the public.

Trespass
Synopsis
Impossible odds, a culture threatened with extinction, an inspirational
fight for survival. Less than thirty Mirarr people remain alive today.
Their language and cultural survival is threatened with extinction. But
their gently spoken leader, Yvonne Margarula, has led the Mirarr on a
campaign of resistance that has stopped successive Governments and two
of the world's largest mining companies, in their tracks. Trespass is a
poetic statement of defiance from a woman who will make you believe that
any fight for freedom can be won.

This event is held in conjunction with Cinema Nova - Novadose
Proceeds to the Irati Wanti Campaign

Irati Wanti is the inspiring and unrelenting campaign of the Kupa Piti
Kungka Tjuta. The Kungka Tjuta are senior Aboriginal women from
Antikarinya, Yunkunjatjara and Kokatha nations who have been campaigning
to defend their land and their culture against a proposed national
radioactive waste dump on their land.

LL:AA: Help the Australian Union of Women

2000-05-12 Thread Victorian Women's Trust

CAN WE HELP OUT THE VICTORIAN BRANCH OF THE UNION OF AUSTRALIAN WOMEN?

The Union of Australian women was formed in 1950. It has branches in each
state. Women members over the past fifty years have campaigned on many
fronts to assist women's struggle for equality. They have been a dogged
voice for many women.

They need our help. When I asked one of their members for an idea of the
sorts of things they needed, this was the response:

· first aid cabinet
· filing cabinets
· uniform bookshelves
· 2-3 ergonomic chairs
· narrow coat cupboard
· large pinboard
· extra computer equipment
· modern answer phone
· up to date photocopier
· oblong desk
· envelopes and other stationery

This is a pretty modest list! There must be many women in corporate and
other workplaces who see lots of discarded furniture etc in office
make-overs…Let's see some creative and efficient recycling!!!

If you are in a position to help out, can you contact the Victorian Branch
Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane, on phone and fax: 9654 7409 or e-mail:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

LL:REM: Wendy McCarthy speaks in Melbourne

2000-04-07 Thread Victorian Women's Trust

FORTHCOMING EVENT...FORTHCOMING EVENTFORTHCOMING EVENTFORTHCOMING
EVENT.

Leading Australian feminist, author and public activist, Wendy McCarthy will
be in Melbourne next week to present a public lecture entitled The Lost
Continent? Australians in search of leadership and vision.

On the eve of the release of her autobiography Don't Fence Me In, Wendy will
deliver what promises to be an insightful and candid look at what it means
to be Australian at the turn of the new century.

"In the 1960's being Australian and visible meant being male - mateship was
male. In the 21st Century relationships in politics and business will cross
gender - there is no other way. This means that male/female reconciliation
is an important 21st Century agenda theme"

In the wake of the republican referendum defeat and ongoing concerns over
reconciliation, Australia's role in Asia, problems of the bush and the ever
widening social and economic divide, Wendy will reflect on a growing public
restlessness towards the major political parties and their failure to
provide much needed leadership and vision.

"Reconciliation between black and white Australians will challenge the
shifting definition of what it means to be Australian - and it should."

In the '70s Wendy worked for the Family Planning Association, lobbied for
child care and abortion law reform, and assisted in the development of the
Women's Electoral Lobby. In the '80s she served as deputy chair of the ABC
Board and was General Manager of the Australian Bicentennial Authority. In
the '90s Wendy headed the National Trust and Australian Heritage Commission.

FREE EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG WOMEN

· Would you like to know where to access help when you have problems in the
workplace?
· Like to know more about your rights in the workplace?
· Like to learn strategies for negotiating?
· Do you feel confident about bargaining and negotiating your rights and
conditions in the workplace?

If these questions capture your interest, you may be interested in attending
a series of seminars on how to negotiate your workplace agreement.

Under the Employment Relations Act employees are expected to bargain
individually for their rights and conditions in the workplace. This
presumes that employers and employees come to the negotiation process from a
position of equality.

Young women entering the workforce on a casual or part time basis are
particularly vulnerable in this process. Information and skills are
required for the complex process of negotiation within the workplace.

- Gain Confidence in the Employment Process -

To ensure young women employees come to the bargaining process with a good
working knowledge of their employment rights and obligations, the Women's
Enterprise Connection and the Victorian Women's Trust are conducting a
series of workshops throughout April 1999.

The workshops will give young women an overview of their rights under the
current legislation, the types of agreements that can be negotiated, and the
skills and knowledge to confidently negotiate an agreement. The series will
consist of four workshops which will run throughout April. Workshops will
be free and informal.

For further information contact Business Matrix on 9 411 4044.

Employment Seminars for Women
- The New Work Environment -

Reform in industrial relations has shown that organisations and businesses
are now contracting workers and specialists rather than taking on the
conventional relationship between employer and employee. The less permanent
workforce has created a new environment for management, staff and
contractors, making it essential to keep abreast of Industrial Relations
changes, rules and regulations.

A challenge for women in management, as well as independent contractors, is
to have a good working knowledge and understanding of the flexibility and
restrictions of the new work environment, in order to steer through the
rules and regulations. An understanding of workplace flexibility is
imperative for gaining a leading edge.

- Gain Confidence in the Employment Process -

To assist women in business, management and those employed on a contractual
basis, the Women's Employment Advisory Project and Madgwicks Lawyers will be
conducting a series of seminars throughout May 1999.

The seminars will give employers and independent contractors an overview of
the current legislation, the types of workplace agreements and contracts
that can be negotiated, and an understanding of the regulations and
requirements regarding employment. Seminars will be held at Business
Matrix, 288 Brunswick Street Fitzroy For further information contact
Business Matrix on 9 411 4044.
