LL:REM: Global Insights 3 reminder

1999-10-04 Thread access news

A reminder about Global Insights 3. Screening this Friday (6:30 pm) Public
Lecture Theatre, Old Arts Building, University of Melbourne.

Global Insights 3 is a collection of short films about grassroots struggles
for democracy, sovereignty, human rights and the environment. Through
examples from the Asia-Pacific region (including Australia), it illustrates
how governments and huge corporations collude to claim land, exploiting the
natural resources and people of the land for profit. The Australian
government and Australian-based multinationals are clearly shown to be
involved in the military aggression that is often necessary to back up this
resource-grabbing.

Global Insights draws strongly from grassroots video projects which have
sprung up around the world as video production has become cheaper and more
accessable. Direct voices from the affected communities and activists are
heard.

Global Insights is a community-based volunteer production.

The details for the night are:
Friday 8th October
Food and Drink from 6.30 pm (screening 7:00 pm)
Public Lecture Theatre, Old Arts Building, University of Melbourne

Tickets are $7 and $9 and are available from Friends of the Earth (9419
8700), SKA TV (9663 6976) and 3CR (4919 8377).
Unfortunately, due to previous sell-outs, we will not be able to place
tickets on hold.

LL:INFO: SKA TV Training Project

1999-12-10 Thread access news

* Looking for free training and access to video production equipment?
* Aged between 18 and 26?
* Living or working within the electorate of Melbourne Ports?

If you answered yes to these questions, then SKA TV is looking for you.

SKA TV has recently received funding from the Federal Government's
Federation Community Projects Program to conduct video production training
with young people who live or work within the Melbourne Ports area. 10
people aged between 18 and 26 will have the opportunity to work with SKA TV
in the production of a 52 minute documentary focussing on community
concerns and aspirations. The project will create a framework to look at
how the Melbourne Ports area has changed over the past one hundred years -
how events such as migration, building regulation, and changes to
indigenous, workers and women's rights have shaped the community into what
it is today.

Working with experienced trainers, the group will develop their own
objectives and context for the documentary, which must encompass issues of
federation, national identity and political change.

SKA TV's training programs are distinct from other video production courses
in that they focus on a means for widening the communication of issues,
rather than being solely about learning a technical skill. We don't just
make television about communities, but actively encourage communities to
seek exposure through the media to find productive means of being heard.

For an application form or more information about this project, please

Dear friends, fans and comrades,

As we draw closer to the end of our World Season series, an isightful and

Why have the people of Yugoslavia become Nato targets? Bill Clinton says,
"we are bombing Yugoslavia because we care about saving lives", US
Attorney General Ramsey Clarke visits the scene of his own governements
genocide when he sees first hand hospitals, schools and factories bombed
during NATO relentless devestation of civilian areas. The insight reveals
how much Clinton and his allies care. Essential and shocking viewing.

LL:DDV: SKA TV - Oakdale CFMEU doco

2000-03-03 Thread access news

OAKDALE

6.3 MILLION reasons to belong to the UNION

Screening 8.00 PM Monday March 6th

FREE

@ The Builders Arms Hotel (gerturde st fitzroy)

and on Channel 31 Melbourne, same time

SYNOPSIS:

On the 9th of June 1999, 125 underground coal miners at the Oakdale
Colliery, West of Sydney, were told that the mine was closing and there was
no money to pay them the $6.3 million in entitlements they were owed.

Some with almost 40 years service at the mine wwere owed up to $100.000.
Most of the miners were family men with mortgages who, without a job and
robbed of their entitlements, faced ruin.

This 24 minute video records the development of the Oakdale campaign from
the first day and the magnificent role played by the rank and file Oakdale
workers and their families. It highlights the strong national community
campaign mounted by their Union, the Construction Forestry Mining and
Energy Union (CFMEU).

The CFMEU, with the support of the Australian trade union movement, went
head to head with a hostile conservative Federal Government for nine weeks
before a national coal strike and widespread public anger, forced the
Govenment into a dramatic backflip and the payment of the entire $6.3
million to the Oakdale miners.

With up to 20.000 Australian workers robbed of similar benefits every year,
the Oakdale campaign also forced a commitment from the Federal Government
to finally introduce a national employees entitlements protection scheme.
While the Government is looking at a minimal scheme, the CFMEU asserts that
no Australian worker should have to settle for less than the Oakdale miners
Won - every cent of their entitlements.
