William, You have too much going. You could send it to me IF it is NOT an image. If you have the .fdb file or backup or CEDCOM, I would take a peek. Don't send the file back to the group, send it privately Tim Rosenlof William H. Boswell wrote: I dump the recycle bin on a regular basis. I do have one backup from this morning that is after the first crash, but before the major one that deleted an image file and then wouldn't stay open without crashing. I did an import of a GEDCOM file, but decided I didn't want to redo everything I've accomplished since the beginning of this month. Instead I let the program verify and check things, then had it remove all linked images. I'll deal with the images later since they seem to be the source of the crashes. It only crashes in the media area of the program. The images should be relinked anyway because I was finding that unlinking and relinking took longer since there were a lot of duplicates. The one part I'm going to hate the most is relinking all of the source images because many are numbered as generated by Ancestry.com. I do have a report of all images and who they are attached to. It's the very least that FTM2010 could accomplish, but not as complete as I prefer (to include notes). I could send you the zipped backup. With Legacy closed, go to the Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the Legacy3.dbm file. In each folder where you have stored your pictures that are linked to the Legacy file, you'll find a PicList.dbm file. Those need to be deleted also. Then reinstall the latest build of Legacy. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted
It's not the image. I can view it just fine in Photoshop or Windows Explorer. The problem with FTM 2009/2010 was that it couldn't handle images without crashing not just this one image. Apparently, Legacy can't either. I'm seriously considering just keeping the images outside of Legacy including the source images which is going to be a problem. I don't think these genealogy programs can handle a large number of images. I use external images anyway and have for several years. I've never embedded images because they are useless outside of the software. Legacy did not save any of the information I did this morning as far as photos so no it doesn't save on the fly. In other areas perhaps as I expected, but everything I did related to photos this morning (about 5 hours worth) is gone. I'm not even going to bother with restoring any backups from this morning or last night because they're probably corrupt too. I did run the check/repair things as well and they didn't do anything. It still crashed as soon as I opened it. -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com]on Behalf Of Kathy Shiell-Stokes Sent: Saturday, September 12, 2009 1:08 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted William: Have you tried opening that picture file in an imaging program such as Gimp or Irfanview? RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted
The images are all located on an external hard drive. I don't know why it was looking in the E Drive except that most of my programs use the E Drive for temporary file storage because there is nothing there. It's a very small drive. I don't put any data on the C Drive because I don't keep data there for a very good reason. I do system restores or reformats at least once a year to get rid of all the junk that Microsoft Windows Updates puts there. If I forget that I have data files on the C Drive then it will be gone unless I remember to do a backup. My computer is about six years old and if I could afford to upgrade or buy a new one I would. I wish I could get rid of this piece of junk (Sony--I'll never buy another one). It probably can't be upgraded anyway. They'll say I need a new one just to make a fast buck. I do need a faster computer though. I guess you could say that my system is not the typical system where people just pile years worth of junk on it and leave it there. Data is backed up the beginning of the year for the previous year then cleaned out. If I have to change my routine because of a piece of software then I'll change the software especially one that deletes my files. FTM2008 did that with all of my media files and I immediately trashed it. Software should not dictate where I choose to put my data files that's why I have two separate data drives--both external and one is never connected when my internet connection is live. It's an archive drive and I don't put a lot of trust in my Norton software because it has missed things before. The only software problems I have are with programs that use external programs such as Net Framework which conflicts with everything else that uses it. FTM 2008-2010 uses it and I've noticed that some Adobe software uses it too. The only thing I can think of, and discovered, that some older programs use older versions of Framework that conflict with the newer versions. I downloaded LTools the other day, but still haven't installed it. I'm going to do a new GEDCOM import into Legacy and just work with the data for now. I'll deal with the images later or might look for something that can handle them better. I think I saw something on the Legacy website that works with media files. -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com]on Behalf Of Jay at 1Familytree.com Sent: Saturday, September 12, 2009 1:16 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted Bill, I have over 10,000 images linked to events and persons in my Legacy database and in over 5 years Legacy has only crashed once, and that was several years ago. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted
I deleted all the data files (except the backups) and removed it from my hard drive. Then I decided to just restore my system from about a week ago and start over from scratch. I'm going to import a GEDCOM and hope the image links don't transfer. I'd prefer to just relink them myself. I think the problem might have started when I used The Master Genealogist to import my FTM2009 file which reads FTM files without going the GEDCOM route. I wish other software would do the same because GEDCOMs cut off a lot of text in long sentences. From FTM I exported another GEDCOM for Legacy to read. I don't trust using any previous backups since there might be corruption problems in them as well. I think some junk must have been included in the file that caused Legacy to go crazy. I'm not doing it that way this time, but because FTM2009 has it's own issues I'm afraid I'm going to be stuck using it if Legacy decides to keep crashing. FTM2009/2010 will not give you a reasonable option for exporting your entire file to a format other than it's own which is why it is so limited. I also understand that Legacy does not embed images. I do not embed my images and never have. They are all external and always have been. However, they are all in custom folders under one main folder. Source images are not mixed with photos of people or tombstones. All these genealogy programs want to put everything in one place so you have to sift through thousands of images. There was only one file as far as opening the wrong file so that isn't an option. The information was gone, but it was only the photo information (transcriptions, date of photo, etc.) which was very time consuming to enter because I had to use Microsoft Access and FTM2009 to get the information from--until FTM started acting funny and I knew I had to close it or it would reboot my system. I'm used to it's peculiarities now and know when it's going to crash and reboot. -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com]on Behalf Of Dennis M. This will eliminate one potential problem cause. -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashed Three Times and Lost Everything I Just Inputted
I dump the recycle bin on a regular basis. It has all of the image links to external files so you might have a problem with that, or do you just need the FDB file? -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com]on Behalf Of Dennis M.
