Ron, I did not say I would complain every time... I have been on this list over 5 years and have never once mentioned the mail list subscription problems. But now I am and according to the first line of the Etiquette The Legacy User Group (LUG) is an opt-in mailing list maintained and administered by Millennia Corporation. So I am sending my issue to Millennia. And that's all I will say on the subject and I hope that the same goes for you. It is not proper Etiquette to remark about other listers postings, unless they are directed at you. Hopefully Millennia has counted my vote of no confidence and the subject on this thread should be closed. RE: [LegacyUG] Dear List OWNER/ Manager
I hate to contribute to this thread, but I think it is important to clear up misunderstandings. 1) The line that Jay quoted. The Legacy User Group (LUG) is an opt-in mailing list maintained and administered by Millennia Corporation. Is actually the first sentence of the LUG Guidelines (though the file is named: Etiquette.asp). http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp 2) The second sentence on that page would make it pretty clear that this thread is pretty far from the purpose of LUG. 3) Since the very early days of mail lists, each list has posted its rules of etiquette. While many echo the same or similar rules, it's important to realize that every list may have differences. The 4th and last subhead on the page http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp has the rules of etiquette for LUG. 4) As it pertains to this thread, I point out rules 2 6. Don and according to the first line of the Etiquette The Legacy User Group (LUG) is an opt-in mailing list maintained and administered by Millennia Corporation. And that's all I will say on the subject and I hope that the same goes for you. It is not proper Etiquette to remark about other listers postings, unless they are directed at you. RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging options
Thank you. Many of us have ongoing genealogical endeavors the preclude switching to Legacy 8. It would be nice to have the time to become conversant enough with Legacy 8, but we don't all have that luxury when deadlinea are difficult enough to meet with Legacy 7.5 with which we are familiar. Double entry of data into both versions is not a feasible option. Most of us will upgrade when time and energy allow. Give us a break! Of course, it would be helpful if all listers mentioned which version they were using. I have posted such a suggestion here before, even asked that Legacy post such an announcement. Brian has often responded with answers relating to the earlier versions 5 and 6. Perhaps he was just tired. I hope he is now rested. There are still people on this list who use version 6. Although Legacy has abandoned fixing anything except Legacy 8, their support should be supportive of all users. After all, it is we earlier users who made Legacy what it is today. In Leg8 when I click on Open File, I get a list of family files and of the two I want (both of which I keep in Dropbox) are at the very end. I agree with Michele that it's a lot easier to use the Windows Explorer option to find your files. However if there are a few files (up to 10) that you use regularly, click on the round L icon in the upper left corner (or the System tab, depending on your selection for Design Styles) to show the most recently used files. RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
I have a one-name database of sorts. I’m compiling everything I can find on Kneeland’s. However, I also include all my cousins (of any surname) and all descendants of any Kneeland regardless of surname. I currently have 2 primary lines – descendants of Edward Nealand/Kneeland of Ipswich and the descendants of John Kneeland of Boston. I use Tag 1 and Tag 2 to mark these lines. I also have 30 or so lines of descent from Kneeland Irish immigrants of the 1800’s that I group under Tag 3. And also several African-American Kneeland lines and a variety of undetermined/unattached lines that I don’t have tagged, but could except that I’m using my other tags for other purposes. Another tool that would appear to apply but that I haven’t really explored yet is the Tree Finder tool (View - Trees). I'm new to this software and don't fully understand the best way to do things yet. In Legacy Deluxe 8.0, I tag unrelated individuals and then create a search for that tag in the Name List. I'm currently experimenting with adding fields to the 2nd and 3rd lines of List Report Options to get a format I like. I think this will give me enough information - Names, birth, death, etc. - to be able to screen for new individuals or relationships while away from my computer in a library. Since Legacy is a computer (as opposed to server based, I haven't tried DropBox yet) based program, I'd like to have printed material to refer to on trips to libraries to aid in research. I will look at the Event reports also. Is there a way to print multiple Individual Reports at once, using tags? Thanks, Ted -- Hello, I'm using Legacy Deluxe 8.0. Now, click on the column heading to sort the files according to when they were last modified. [LegacyUG] restoring/updating Legacy to a second computer
Hello everyone, I have a technical computer question that I hope someone can answer for me. Legacy v7.5 is installed on my main computer which is a 64 bit computer. I would like to make a Legacy backup and save it to a flash drive, then update Legacy v7.5 that is installed on a 32 bit laptop. Will going between two computers that are not the same (64 vs 32 bit) result in any problems? Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant chart filling only half page width
In 7.5, I frequently had to use the reset button for reports to get them to work correctly. They seemed to be messed up by updates or something. So always try that when a report format goes crazy. Then you need to re-do all your preferred report format changes. I've changed many of the chart settings and cannot make the problem recur. There are no particularly exotic programs on this computer, but I will watch out for the problem on my netbook which has even fewer programs. You can install Legacy 8.0 side-by-side with Legacy 7.5 on your 32-bit laptop. This will let you compare 8.0 and 7.5 and allow you you to migrate to 8.0 gradually. Hi Lavern, When you say update Legacy 7.5, I assume you mean to update the data file only. As such, what you propose will work Ok. The 32/64 bit stuff refers only to the operating system unless an application is written only for 64bit systems. Legacy is not written this way, so the program runs on both, but the data files are the same. ..Paul From: Lavern Hall lavernh...@gmail.com To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Wednesday, 26 February 2014 9:18 AM Subject: [LegacyUG] restoring/updating Legacy to a second computer Hello everyone, I have a technical computer question that I hope someone can answer for me. RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
I'm trying to trace families in 17th 18th Century Scotland where the names in each are James, William, John, Robert, so I have picked up a lot of unrelated individuals in hopes of eventually sorting them into families. When I try to merge an updated gedcom with the original unrelated tree, I get hundreds of duplicates of course which Legacy 8 Deluxe insists I sort out. Even though it would take a lot of time to do that manually, I'd be willing to do that, except that it is impossible because there is no way to decide which are the duplicates before I've made most connections. What do you do about them in your single surname study? I'm using Legacy 8 Deluxe, latest version, Win7 64bit. If you just change the simple brackets to [[...]] it won't show in reports. Over the last 20 years I have sent out over 5000 letters to families, friends and potential relatives asking for information and usually including some sort of report. A field that is blank rarely prompts' a reader to respond, whereas a field with EITHER Missing or Unknown will trigger the reader to think Oh, I have that info they don't have. And the same for dates, If you have the date of birth is 1901, they continue reading. If they read the date of birth is Abt. 1901, they think, I know that EXACT date they don't have, and that thought process by the reader will elicit more responses. So in my database any unknown given name or surname is listed as unknown. And every incomplete date is prefaced by either abt., aft., bef., bet., or cir. Which also works great with Legacy's date sorting 'logic' which is better than most other software. At least that is my experience. But I recommend whatever the particular user feels best for them, is the best way to do it. Also, if you share FGR or other reports with other family members, if the field is blank it quickly catches their eye and they have a place to help update the information you're missing. If anything is entered in a field, it won't be found as Missing in the Missing Information search. Legacy is looking for an empty field. RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
I rarely load a gedcom any more. Only time I would consider it is if a found a very reliable source for a large new branch of the tree. Even then, I would load it first to a new Legacy family file, clean up all the location names to my standards, clean up all the potential problems, etc, and then merge the cleaned up Legacy family file into my master. Since it would be a new branch, there should not be any actual duplicates unless there was a case of cousins marrying, though there may be multiple cases of possible duplicates that would need to be marked as not duplicates. I've been doing my additions one at a time for a couple of years now. I find Legacy 8s immediate check for duplicates very helpful. It has flagged a couple of instances already where I was about to add a duplicate line, and it catches it at the first person rather than after I've spent time entering 5 or 10 or more people in that line. -Original Message- From: grayscot2 [mailto:graysc...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2014 7:59 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II I'm trying to trace families in 17th 18th Century Scotland where the names in each are James, William, John, Robert, so I have picked up a lot of unrelated individuals in hopes of eventually sorting them into families. RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
I hope you don't mind my joining this thread. Though not really a one name study, I have a reasonably large file and have not done a 'merge' of a new file for some time now, for the very reason that you have found. A cousin and I work together on our tree and we regularly exchange complete updated files. We tag each new addition or change then, when I receive the updated file, I do not try to merge it, but look for the tagged names and enter the new information. I also receive other files/trees in other formats. This is my method for merging, remembering that everyone finds their own style. 1. Create a new Legacy file from the updated gedcom and tag everyone. (In my file exchange with my cousin the names are already tagged.) This also allows me to clean up the file or edit it before merging. 2. Open your main file in Legacy and the new file using Split Screen (I have them side by side) 3. Look for common names then copy the updated/new information to the main file. I do this one by one, family by family, or the complete descendant line if I have a common person. You can also drag the person/family/descendant line to the main file. 4. Untag those copied/merged. This can be done in the new file just prior to the copy/merge to save you from untagging in both files. If you have the tag showing in your index it is easy to look to see which are not yet merged. 5. Continue until you have no more names tagged in your new file. You can stop/start, compare names/lines side by side, at any time and much easier than the Legacy merge window. This allows me to update tags that I use for certain lines and I can also set the privacy settings, if needed, as I go. I primarily copy descendant lines as there is less likelihood of another connection. I will scan through the descendants and may compare the names to my main file before the merge. If I have ancestors of, say, a new wife, I will be brave and copy her ancestors in the same fashion. My file also has many names that are the same. I have not used the 'Merge Duplicates' feature for a few years, perhaps it has matured to where it is more reliable. I do find that I still end up with some duplicates, or are they there from earlier work? I feel my work is too valuable to mess up by merging a bunch of incorrect, though common, names. Legacy's new feature in V8 of showing possible duplicates after entering a new person is very welcomed, but I do get a lot that are not really duplicates. Hope this will give you some new ideas.
