Re: [LegacyUG] Marking possibles

2014-08-27 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Jane,

You can't choose to omit a tag group from a report - but there is a way.

This is a case for one of the privacy options. Just mark these people
Invisible on their Individual Information Sheet you'll find a Privacy
Settings button.
You could customise Family View so that this shows instead of the
default Cause of Death. You customise Family View by right clicking on a
label and then click the button with 3 dots next to the field you want
to change. Look for Private in the list.

When running a report you can override the Privacy options which by
default don't include Invisible people when you wanted a report for
yourself.

It does, and thank you. I like the tag idea and will probably try that.

I hope to end up with all those folks whom I have not verified with
documentation not printing, if I can construct a report which will give
either option, i.e. - print the unverified folks, or not print the
unverified folks. I wonder if there is an option to print or not print
 based upon tag number?

Sometimes I hope for too much from the program. That may be the case here

 Thanks again.

You could use a specific Legacy tag to indicate the people who need
closer inspection/investigation. When you've taken those steps with a
tagged person, remove the tag. You can always create a fresh list of the
people with that tag by searching on it, so it will not matter if you've
made other searches in the meantime and lost the previous list.

You could make a new event for this purpose, and add it to everyone you
want to investigate at a later date. They can be found quickly with a
search for that event. You can make that event show in Family View as
one of the five fields displayed for the couple in the middle.

You could put a note in one of the Note fields.

This should give you some food for thought. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Privacy options problem with Descendant Narrative Report

2014-08-27 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Pat,

Only two suggestions.
1) Check the privacy status of the son - if he's invisible, the line
won't print unless that privacy option is overridden. See the Privacy
button in the Report Options where you're choosing to exclude the living.

2) On your Individual Information sheet, check that you are not dead ;-)

i tried doing a descendant _chart _and when I tell it to exclude
Living, I only get the one ancestor (otherwise, if I include
everybody, it's 80 pp long, just for a chart.) In other words same
problem as with the desc narr rep.
On the other hand, If i tell it to exclude details for living, it
prints the name but no pictures, dates etc. -- in other words, does
just what it's supposed to do.

Since writing the previous paragraph, I've also done the Tool -
Advanced Set Living and this time when I excluded the living it
_/did/ _exclude my aunt's (and others') living descendants but it
 still included me!

 So there are still problems!

It's working fine for me in build 439.

First try resetting the report options and choosing everything

If that doesn't work, and when totally excluding living
individuals you still only get the first ancestor, I suggest that
you don't have his children marked as deceased - or at least your

You may need to use the Tool - Advanced Set Living to kill off the

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM import questions

2014-08-27 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Dale,

You haven't said where the Gedcom came from. You also haven't said what
the missing notes were attached to originally. Legacy has a lot of
different note fields. Vital event notes, Special Event notes as well as
General, Research and Medical Notes.

It's highly unlikely you've exceeded a maximum size with General Notes -
or any other note.

You might get more specific help if you copied part of the Gedcom with a
note that is missing from the Legacy file so the Gedcom experts could
see the series of Tags. You know that a Gedcom is a plain text file so
can be opened in Notepad etc?

I did some further checking and found that some of the notes are
there(General Notes). I don't know why some are there and some are
not. Maybe they exceeded the maximum size or something.

When I did the GEDCOM import I only had one error. It was a date. There
 were no errors on notes.

I found a report under Help/File Properties that had some additional
 totals for the database.

Re: [LegacyUG] To input or not to input

2014-08-27 Thread brittongen
Jane,

I use Legacy primarily as a research tool, so I'm comfortable with things which
clash with good genealogy practice and may require care with anything to be
shared. Very commonly, I resort to the extensive and versatile Placeholder
family.

One example is a problem with my Pratts, where detail of an estate entailment
supports connection but points at the wrong brother. Pending resolution,
there's now an extra brother, Entailed Pratt Placeholder as my mother's
ancestor. His notes describe the problem and possible sources of info. This is
quiet regarding reports and charts, since it doesn't affect number of
generations, but visually obvious and quick to find since all Placeholders
list together and given names can offer keys. Removal is just trivial delinking
and relinking.

Another general example is helping use of Legacy where DNA is involved and
speculation can really run rampant. Some of my Placeholders are quite long
lived, hundreds, even thousands, of years, and have the ability to bridge from
my surname(s) to other genealogies or deep ancestries where DNA indicates
probability of connection but proven (or provable) linkage is lacking.

Placeholders can be tagged as a class, unlinked or mass deleted, so it's easy
to revert to conventional format for a report or other reason. Simply do a
backup, dump everything you don't want and when you are done, restore from the
backup.

Re: [LegacyUG] To input or not to input

2014-08-27 Thread Robert57P_gmail
Several items for thought. Feel free to pick one or come up with your own:

1) You could add them as a child.
2) Then on the FAMILY tab, right click on any child in the list of
children at the bottom, select CHILDREN SETTINGS
3) Select this person in the pop-up window, and in the RELATIONSHIP TO
fields at the bottom click the DOWN ARROW
4) In the window that pops up, select ADD
5) Enter in a relationship. Maybe something like .unknown parent or
.unsure of parent or .is this their child? or something like that.
(Note that I put a . in front of any relationships I create. Helps me
to realize it is one of my creations and may need tweaks in sentences,
reports and such.)
6) Click SAVE
7) Now click on that relationship and click SELECT

(Note in the future you obviously don't need to go through the ADD
process - skips steps 4 and 5 and 6.)

Unfortunately I'm not sure in which reports this relationship shows up.

You could also add a dummy event (add a new event with a name of .Is
this their child or some such thing). Then fill in the details in the
event notes.

Or you could just add an entry in the NOTES field of the person with an
explanation that The parenthood needs to be research. Person lived
with xxx per record , but not sure if it was their child.

Remember that you can think of Genealogy as recording blood lines or
recording families. Technically if you only record blood lines, you
would not include adoptions and such, and would not include unknown
relationships. But if you think of it as recording families - this
person WAS obviously a part of this family in some fashion or another.
They were in family records so they had SOME kind of relationship with
the family. They may have been a classmate of one of the children and
the classmate lived with this family for a few months (or a few years),
or whatever. But the fact that they lived with them for even a short
time, they were definitely a part of the family, had an impact on the
family life and should be recorded.

Can I have Windows Search function index it? That would work better
 than using it directly.

Bobby,

What's the name of that webinar (or its presentation date)? I try
clicking on the link, but it fails for me.

I can get to http://www.familytreewebinars.com/
and I can then click on the view more under the New in the archives
section. But after that, I'm not sure which one to select.

I'm guessing it is the Aug 22nd one: Legacy Family Tree - Beyond the
Basics?

Thanks,

I have an ancestor from early Virginia, Timothy Redding. He is found in
 early
records along with others, Francis, John, William, Arthur, etc.
Their relationship is not named and there is no clue as to what it may be. I
know that I can put those other guys in as unlinked people, but they will not
show up when I study my data and am trying to fit clues together as to who
Timothy's parents or brothers are. Am I correct in thinking that it is not
possible to have the other Redding men to show up in family view or
individual chart (which is what I use to do my major work and thought.) If
they are in as 'unlinked? I seldom think to go to the list of unlinked
 people to
compare with data I am discovering as I research.

 Wondering how others handle this?

Try the Death Notes field. You access it by clicking the plus sign at
the end of the Death input line on the Individual Information screen.

I have found a couple people where there were two notes in the Gedcom.

Are you allowed to have a blank line in a Note field?

I just got my Deluxe customer number 2 days ago. I am trying to find

 Thanks,

 Dale
