I agree with you. I have issues with copying and pasting when I use Windows
Notepad with Legacy where sometimes it won't let me copy the text. I usually
go back to the previous page then forward it again then it will allow me to
copy the text. I've had this problem only in the browser at Ancestry and Find
A Grave. Notepad has always been dysfunctional for me. The text in it does
some weird things where it disappears then returns if I scroll up then down.

I believe it is a Windows 8.1, Notepad, or Internet Explorer 11 problem, and
could be attributed to Windows Updates which I am careful with installing due
to severe issues in the past. Windows 7 always worked best for me only my
current computer, which came with Win 8.1, refuses to function properly.

I have Windows 7 and don't have the problem specifically with Legacy but have
run into times that the shortcut keys don't work when copying from my browser.
The right click works fine. This is something that happened fairly recently so
I suspect a Windows update may be the fault here.

We have seen a lot of strange Legacy problems which seem to be related to
Windows 8 and I don't particularly like the interface. Windows 7 works fine for

Re: [LegacyUG] Cut and Paste not working

2015-02-26 Thread Stratton
I like the use of 'copy and paste' rather than what I used cut and
paste', since that is really what I do. :-)

Since I started this discussion, I have an update on what I think my
problem was and how I solved it.
I am using Windows 7. I did a reboot of Windows and still had the problem.
I am using a free clipboard called 'freeclips'
M8software.com/clipboards/freeclip/freeclip.htm.
I believe this was causing the problem with the 'normal' copy and
pasting in Windows

I found that 'freeclips' was being blocked by my antivirus program
Webroot.

[the author has a video on how to solve this with Webroot and probably
with other antivirus programs.]

By unblocking 'freeclips' in Webroot under security tab, all copy and
paste from Ancestery, Find a Grave, Notepad, familysearch.org, Chrome,
IE and Firefox, Word, etc. into and out of Legacy works.

I highly recommend the 'freeclips' program because I can copy small and
large items into 25 separate slots in 'free clips' and only have to
click on the slot to paste into Legacy. Since I do a lot of copy and
paste of the same information into several records of people, this has
cut down the amount of time going back and forth between records doing
only one copy and paste at a time.

To clear old clips from the all the slots, just right click on the set
of clips and clear them. Then you can reuse the slots over and over.

I would like to know if the 'freeclips' program will help those with
Windows 8.

When you update makes no difference as it is often a new update that
can cause a problem where there wasn't one previously. It also
depends on what other programs you have on your computer, what
security programs you run and updates to those. It's possible for a
Windows update and another update to clash in some way. When that
happens a fix is needed to one or both so they play nicely again.

I don't have the cut and paste problem either but have had it in the
past.

[LegacyUG] Problems with event notes

2015-02-26 Thread Gene Wheeler

Does anyone else see this happening? For example:

He was head of a household that included his wife, Elza, age 39; and
children Samantha, age 17;...etc. This becomes: He was head of a household
that included his* wife, Elza, age 39 *; and children Samantha, age
17. etc.

This unfortunate error occurs only after one saves the event. Opening it
again will display the problem. This error is repeatable. It does not
appear when I open an existing event that already has some highlighting of
this type. However if I undo the highlighting there, and then redo it, the
error appears. Thus it appears to me that the problem was introduced by
release 467.

The problem you reported below has been fixed and will be available in
the next update to Legacy 8.0. I do not know when that update will be
issued. You can check for updates by selecting the Legacy Home tab. The
updates section will tell you when a new update is available and, if you
have the deluxe version, allow you to update from within Legacy.
Standard version users will have to obtain the update from our web site.

I’m struggling with the 1696 –1729 county for what is now Westerly, Washington,

1.Washington County wasn’t formed until 1729.
2.When I plot Westerly with Anti Map, it looks like it was in New London, CT.
3. If I’m reading Anti Map correctly, then would the address be Westerly, New
London, Colony of Connecticut?

Would someone please help me understand this AntiMap?

Thanks Kurt and Paul for giving some thought to my issue. (Kurt, this family
did have children. I had truncated the lines in the example, after the note
line.)

However, I have now tracked down the cause and I consider it a bug.

When I export with the privacy option of suppressing details of living
individuals, the marriage notes for a couple are missing if any of their
children are living. As soon as I kill off the one living child in this
example, the marriage notes appear.

Here is why I consider it a bug:
1. Other marriage details are present: the date, place, and sources. Even the
existence of the marriage note is present – just not the note itself.
2. The export screen where the privacy options are presented says nothing
about suppressing anything to do with the parents of a living individual.

I updated to the current build, 467, and the problem is still there.

It appears that in the first case there are children and then the change
date/time and then the text of the note. In the second case there are no
children and both the change date/time and the note text are missising. Is
this the recurring pattern? Are all the missing marriage notes for families
with no children?

a curious message:

”Remote host said:

I have not heard of greylisting. Anyway, here is my answer again, expanded with
examples.

The notes in question were missing from the gedcom export. (That’s why I posted
to a Legacy list.)

I find it very mysterious that some marriage notes would export and others not.

For example, here is a case where the marriage note exported successfully:

0 @F167@ FAM

1 HUSB @I265@

1 WIFE @I468@

1 MARR

2 DATE 17 Aug 1865

0 @NF167@ NOTE

1 CONC me of the marriage. Carmine's parents were deceased. The ma

1 CONC rriage record mentions the Death Extract document for 'Mari

1 CONC a Spagnolo, first wife of the husband.'

And here is a case where the marriage note link is in the gedcom for the family
section:

0 @F113@ FAM

1 HUSB @I7@

1 WIFE @I269@

1 MARR

2 DATE 9 Dec 1922

2 PLAC Spokane, Spokane, Washington, USA

2 SOUR @S2@

2 NOTE @NF113@

... but the note NF113 is completely missing from the gedcom file.

As I write this, I just looked at an older, but similarly-created gedcom, and
the notes appear to be well-behaved there. Perhaps my export had a glitch and
didn’t complete everything, although you would think that the file would not be
usable in that case. I’ll try again.

file who were tagged for this export and who had marriage notes. The exported
gedcom, once re-imported to Legacy, only had 17 individuals with marriage notes.

For the missing cases, both husband and wife were tagged and exported. Other
marriage details were exported. I haven’t noticed any other types of notes
missing.

Any ideas?

I’m using version 8.0.0.454.

[LegacyUG] Spreadsheets 101 - Excel-lence in Genealogy - BONUS webinar now available for webinar subscribers

2015-02-26 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Dear Legacy Family Tree Webinar Subscribers,

I thought I knew a lot about spreadsheets. And then I watched Mary Kircher
Roddy's brand new webinar, Spreadsheets 101: Excel-lence in Genealogy. In
addition to seeing ideas of how spreadsheets can help in the analysis of
our genealogy research, I learned some advanced tips including the
Control+ shortcut, the conditional formatting tool, and the wrap text
shortcut. Hmm...maybe my resume just got better too! If you've never used a
spreadsheet, the first part of the webinar will get you up to speed.

*Here's the webinar description:*

Are you afraid of spreadsheets because you don’t know how or where to
start? Or are you comfortable with spreadsheets but know there’s a trick or
two still to learn? In this webinar, Mary Kircher Roddy will get beginners
up to speed, and share with experienced users tricks she’s learned in more
than 25 years of spreadsheet use as an accountant, writer and genealogist.

*How to view:*

So...your webinar membership just got more valuable!! At no extra charge to
you, as an annual or monthly webinar subscriber, this webinar's recording
is now available in the Webinar Library. Just head over to thelibrary
http://familytreewebinars.com/archived_webinars.php, login, and enjoy!

Click here to watch the webinar

Re: [LegacyUG] web pages

2015-02-26 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Barton,

1) You control who is included on the Who tab in the webpage creation.
You can choose a tag group.

2) The pages are created on your hard drive where you say on the Project
tab. You can see what it will look like when you upload it so you can
change your options if you want without continually uploading before you
can view it.
You then upload it to wherever you have online website space. You may
find you have some through your ISP. Wherever the space is, they'll tell
you how to upload.

Can someone please explain how web pages work. I wanted to publish an

written it up in a Word document where I’ve inserted pictures and
screenshots of the DNA chromosome browser data. Can I just create a
single web page? I went to Internet, Create Web Pages and I can’t tell
if creating a web page means putting my entire tree on the web. Also,
the web page location is showing on my C drive. How can the page be on
the web and accessed by others if it’s on my C drive? I don’t get it.

 Thanks,

the Options button. However, I do not see the option to edit on the
Options button in Chronology View. I am using 8.0.0.467 Deluxe. What am
