Neither of these reports are what I call a traditional ahnentafel
report. Are you familiar with what that is? It is linear, without
 individual details except for DOB and place, and DOD and place;
individual
couple separated by generation numbering. This report is far more
condensed than that two you mentioned. Individuals are numbered, and
you
double that number to find the father's number, and add one to find the
 mother.

An Ahnentafel report is the same as an Ancestor report. Legacy has it
in two forms - chart or book.

On the Report tab, go to Other Charts for the Ancestor Chart and the
Ancestor Book is on the ribbon.

[LegacyUG] Reports using d'Aboville Numbers

2015-05-18 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
As long as we are talking about various reports with various numbers, one of
the reasons that I chose Legacy when I got a new computer and needed to change
my software, was because Legacy offered d'Aboville numbers.  I have a
(descendant) book of my family tree which used those.  It came out in 1950.  It
has a column for the number and then the name and information about that person
is in the second column.  You can tell by the number, just how the person fits
into the family.  For husbands who married into the family, there is an h
after the wife's number.  For the wife who married in, there is a w after the
husband's number.  A first wife is designated w (1) and the second wife is
designated w (2), etc..  It is a wonderful system.
Legacy uses d'Aboville numbers in the descendant chart, but there is no
separate column for the number, so it all merges together and is not so easy to
read.  Also, there is no option to use the d'Aboville numbers in a descendant
book if you wanted to include all of the information that you had about
individuals.  Wish Legacy would make improvements in the use of the d'Aboville
numbers.                         Priscilla

We are happy to consider suggestions for new features.

In Legacy 6.0 and later you can suggest a new feature by clicking on the
link on the Legacy Home Tab Support Section

Other users can make a suggestion here:
 http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp
Use the drop down list in the first box to select a category, Legacy 8.0
 or Legacy Charting.

If you have a sample report layout of your version of the traditional
ahnentafel report include that so we can see exactly what the layout you
 want is.

You can include whatever you want. The example I copied and posted included
marriage dates. Since I deal with mediaeval and ancient lineages, it is the
most useful, having birth-death, if those are known. Yes, the numbers become
immense, but it is the most concise and efficient way to list hundreds /
thousands of ancestors.

A variant uses the same system, either in a chart such as your pedigree chart,
or in a report:

Generation 1
1. person

Generation 2
2. father
3. mother

Generation 3
4. father's father
5. father's mother
6. mother's father
7. mother's mother

etc.

It is easy, if one can multiply and divide, to immediately find ancestors and
descendants.

It may be possible to do in Legacy 8 by limiting the report options. I can't
use it yet because the bugs keep messing up the reports I need to produce all
the time. (I keep trying every update).

Hi Barton,
It doesn't matter where you are before you access the Add Master Source
button.
I'm usually using the Source Clipboard, click on the Change Master
Source link to access the Master Source List and realise I haven't
already made a source for this data and so click the Add button.
But I could be on the Assigned Sources for an Individual screen accessed
by clicking the books icon which is on all entry screens and on Family
View. Then click the Add a New Source button instead of the Cite a
Master Source.

If unsure if you are adding a Source correctly, check out the Videos
available on Sourcing. There are a number and some of them are free
including Sources and Citations Made Simple, Standard, and Powerful
http://www.familytreewebinars.com/legacy_videos.php

I have no idea what you mean by a christening diaog box or what you mean
by the default position of the cursor.

Re errors. Have you discovered the website troubleshooting help?
Check it out and see if any of the Error 9 fixes help.

Troubleshooting Help.

Instead of staying with this source that is causing you so much trouble,
you might try entering a different source and check that is error free.
Also, it's quite a good idea to practice with the Sample database rather
than with your own file. That can avoid errors that may have crept into
your file because you haven't run File Maintenance - Check/Repair which
is needed to keep a database healthy.

which field your cursor is in to simply create a source. But a
christening dialog box came up during one of my aborted attempts to
create the land entry file source. Is this because when I open the
Individual's Information dialog box when I begin to add the Master
Source, the cursor is in its default position (the christening field)
and I am then clicking on the Source icon to Add the New Source?
Should I be in a different field when clicking on the Source icon from
the Individual's Information dialog box to add the new source? If so,
which one? My intention was to create the source, then create an Event
 to tie the source to.

I am able to get as far as adding NARA as a source; it's when I click
on save that I get an error message -- Run-time error '9':
Subscript out of range which (once I click on okay) then bounces me
out of Legacy. After a third attempt to do this I was for some reason
then able to get beyond that point, and taken to the source detail
dialog box. However, when trying to save after filling it out, I was
bounced out of Legacy. It was here (before being bounced out) that the
christening dialog box came up. The source template I am using is the
one referenced earlier in this email exchange (in Section 11.23 -
 homestead files - basic format).

 Please advise, and thanks.

Since neither Cathy nor I can duplicate your problem there is no fix
needed. The repository selection button simply opens the current list
of repositories in your file. Legacy has no pre-defined repository
data. If you do not see any list you have not created any repositories
 for that file.

If your screen freezes when your try to add, the screen to add a
repository may be behind the Legacy screen. This happens occasionally.
To try and bring the hidden screen to the front try tapping the Alt key.

If that does not work try using ALT-Spacebar to call up the windows
Screen manipulation menu. If the hidden screen is off the visible
monitor that menu will pop up on an edge of the monitor depending on
where the hidden screen is located. Select move from the menu then use
your arrow keys to move the screen unto the visible monitor area. For
example if the menu was on the left edge use the right arrow to move
the screen from left to right.

You could also try adding NARA as a Repository from the Master List
View Master Lists Address Lists Repository This will also cause
your freeze problem if the off the visible screen
problem exists since the Add button on the Master Repository Address
list opens the same screen as adding from the source input.

Hi Cathy, I did not think that it mattered where you were when you added the
source.

Whenever I open an Individual’s Information dialog box, the cursor is blinking
in the christening field. That’s all I meant by that.

I just went back into my ancestor where I added the land entry source. It’s
there – in the christening field. I tried to edit the source, and I got the
runtime error message I cited. When I tried to close it, I got the dialog box
I was referring to – “Edit Mater Source Definition – Christening.” When I
close this box, I am bounced out of Legacy altogether.

It may sound as if I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’ve added many sources in
the past without incident. I don’t know what is happening here. I checked
out Error 9, and I have the current build date (26 Feb 2015) and version
(8.0.0.473).

I consider myself fairly computer adept, and have not had issues with Legacy in
the past. I feel at a loss as to how to proceed.

problem exists since the Add button on the Master Repository Address list opens
the same screen as adding from the source input.
