Re: [LegacyUG] STILL - Trying to create a Relationship Chart in Excel

2018-09-15 Thread Brian Kelly
The only options for a Relationship chart (printed from the relationship
calculator) is text or pdf so this cannot be created as a .csv file.
When I opened this in excel I was first lead through a series of excel
screens as it tried to decide how the text was divided into cells. In
the end though I did see the chart showing the relationship.

When I created a relationship report Reports > Other Reports >
Relationship Report there was a csv option.

Opening the Relationships.csv file in Excel 2007 worked perfectly. There
were two columns, Name and Relationship.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fwd: Record of Funeral

2018-09-15 Thread Brian Kelly
I would ask myself where this funeral record originated or where it was
found? Was it published in a newspaper? Was it included in a book? if so
then I would use one of the book or newspaper templates.

If it was included on a website collection then the questions would be
what is the website about, a private family history related one or
public general database. For a family related one I would probably use a
generic internet template. For a general database then the type/source
of the collection may lead you to a template. For example if the
collection was taken from newspapers the newspapers online template
would probably apply.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fwd: Record of Funeral

2018-09-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Gene,

You can add whatever Events you like in Legacy.
I haven't used TNG but I understand that there is a section there where
you can map Legacy Custom Events to something in TNG.

Sourcing your event is another issue and the source will go with the event.

If you're asking what SourceWriter Template to use to source what you've
found that depends on where you found it. Could be a Newspaper source or
Cemetery source or Internet database or an Artifact source as this is
something found amongst family papers.
But you maybe stay with Basic sources since in a Gedcom all sources are
converted to Basic style anyway.

Re: [LegacyUG] STILL - Trying to create a Relationship Chart in Excel

2018-09-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Valerie,

Why do you think you can open a Relationship Chart in Excel? What format
is the chart?

Do you mean you've saved a Relationship Report to csv?

To open a csv file in Excel, if Excel has all its defaults, you can just
double click on the file. Otherwise when in Excel you have to go to File
- Open and then change the type of file to open so that csv files appear
in the list when you've navigated to the right folder.

Be sure to do the import of the GED file into a new blank family file or it

I do not think that you can download a csv file from Ancestry. Just
giving a file a name like filename.csv does not change the content. if
you downloaded a file from Ancestry it is probably a GEDCOM file which
is the standard format for genealogical files.

Rename the file to filename.ged
Open Legacy and use file > Import > GEDCOM file
when you have finished the import from filename.ged
Go to View > Name List
Click Options > Print
Now you will be able to define up to three rows of data you can include
for each person.
Select CSV file in the lower right
The print box in the upper right will change to Create
Click create
In the dialog box select the folder where you want to save the file and
assign a file name
Click save
Remember where you saved that file
Open Excel then open the file you exported from legacy.
