Re: [LegacyUG] New feature!

2020-01-23 Thread Cathy Pinner

Bill,
You'll likely have more problems if you don't update as the security
certificate is about to expire and has been updated in this 339 update.

Many people have updated with no problems. If you are used to doing
Legacy updates you should have no problem though may need to pause your
security software during the actual installation.
If you get the Windows screen  Windows Protected your PC, click on the
More Info link and then the Run Anyway button.

Another thing it's worth doing is right clicking on the installation
file (if you are updating by downloading the file from the website and
not using the link on the Legacy Home tab) and choosing to Run as
Administrator.

Christopher,

Nothing in the update could remove the FS IDs from your family file.
However, an update can sometimes change some settings including
Options > Customise 1.2 which controls which file is opened when
Legacy opens. That may have happened and a different file to the one
you normally use has opened.
Check by using the Recent File list. The Recent File List is found by
clicking the L top left corner of the Legacy screen if the L is larger
than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll see a System Ribbon tab and
it's on that instead. It depends on the Design Style you are using.

Make sure you are using the right file in the right folder.

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows Defender

2020-01-23 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jack,

I wonder if you need to empty your Internet Explorer cache/Temporary
Internet files - and yes I mean Internet Explorer as a form of that is
used for internal display of websites. If you've uninstalled Internet
Explorer, that could be the problem I guess.

Also try deleting this folder: "...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\LegacyHome"
There are settings on the Legacy Home tab that control how Legacy
connects to the internet under the Options button but these are normally
overridden by Click here ... so that's probably not the issue.

Eva,
Next time just restart your computer. That closes any lock files that
didn't clear properly when the file was closed.
The alternative, if you are comfortable with doing it, is looking
through your Data Folder and deleting any files with an ldb extension.
You have to make sure you are only deleting LDB files and not FDB files.

database and opening that will create the .ldb file. If it is

Success! I noted in one of the posts that a recommended method to get the
339 update to install was to *run Windows 10 in Safe Mode*. While it was a
bit tedious to get it into Safe Mode, once I got it there, the Legacy
uninstall was trivial. This process avoided any issue regarding Windows
security.

Thanks for all the comments regrading this issue, one of which worked for

Cynthia, there is no difference in the downloads for the basic (free)

version and then unlock the Deluxe features by entering your Customer

Look for Unlock Deluxe in the File menu.

Mine were. All things being the same outside of the update, I would have
to conclude that it had something to do with it.

[LegacyUG] If you are having problems updating

2020-01-23 Thread Michele Lewis
If you are having problems installing the new update, make sure all others
programs have been shut down first and run the installation as an
administrator. Right click the downloaded installation file and there you
will see Run as Administrator. This will knock out 99% of the problems.

No problem with me and correctly loads the web page for Legacy News in
Chrome from Legacy Home, and can also run a search on Google.

Thanks for your comments - .339 installed OK and running, but still can't
see Legacy News on Home Page "Make sure you are connected to the internet
and then click here to retrieve the latest news items.". Similarly, Check
for Updates won't work as it tells me (eventually) that I need to be
connected to the internet.

That is a precautionary feature of Windows / Windows Defender - which you
have correctly responded to, Jack.

Windows Defender gives that response to any executable / installer that
hasn't been "marked" to enable an "over-ride". You can make an alteration to
Windows that always allows an installer to go ahead - but clicking to allow
installation is seldom a worry or inconvenience to me, so I leave things as
they are.

Long ago (7 years+) I abandoned all the paid anti-malware products, and the
free versions like AVG, because Windows for a long time has had more than
adequate protection via its built-in products, especially since Windows
8/8.1/10.

But in my opinion, anyone persisting with Windows 7 is foolhardy.

Went to the Legacy web site and downloaded the update. Windows wouldn't run
it as was blocked by Windows Defender. Managed to override this by "run
anyway". Updated OK, but won't allow any access to the internet when
running. Presumably there is a setting in Windows Defender that needs to be
altered. Tried a couple of them but these haven't cured it.
Any ideas?

I can't "check for updates" as the program says I am not connected to the

restarted my machine in case there was a glitch. Is there a problem at the
Legacy end?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy update still not working

2020-01-23 Thread Chris Hill

A 'File could not be locked' error usually applies when opening an
Access database which the system thinks is already open. Access creates
a lock file .ldb when it opens a file and removes it when it closes.
The main Legacy database, .fdb, is actually an Access database and
opening that will create the .ldb file. If it is still present after
the program is closed it will stop the file being 'reopened'. Sometimes
clears after a reboot or might to be deleted manually after a reboot.
May also apply to the x~hdb.hdb and some of the various .dbm
files that Legacy uses.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy update still not working

Hallo all,

I downloaded the update via my existing program (German). Download was
ok, the new version is existing on my laptop now. But when I try to open
the program I get following message:

Error Opening Message File - Datei konnte nicht gesperrt werden

I never wanted to "sperren" (means lock) the data.

I tried the download again - without a firewall, nothing changed.

I don't know where to look for this message. Can anybody help?
