Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstalling deluxe (paid) version
Sue, The easiest way is to simply download the free program from the website as you'll always get the latest version. Install, and when asked input the deluxe number you have and it will activate the premium features. That easy. If you can't find your serial number, contact Support and they will resend you your number. RE: [LegacyUG] Neat mug shots
Hi Bob, Thanks for the kudos. To tell the honest truth, it had never crossed my mind about printing out the info. I always thought with todays browsers and the ability to have multiple windows open, you could always keep a page from a specific site open and flip back and forwards between program as well. It will take a little time to implement as I am a very busy person, and I'd like to make sure that it works proper before I upload the new code to print. As for making the windows/frames larger, most browsers can zoom. To increase magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ + To decrease magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ - See if that helps? Boyd, Jenny, Lloyd, Paula et al., I too have only just managed to update both my beta and general release to the latest (.439) release. Like you Boyd, I always download the full file. It has just been a habit more than anything else. I am currently running (GR439) and inputting data with no problems whatsoever (touch wood). Kind Regards, Mark From: Boyd Miller [mailto:bo...@vodafone.net.nz] Sent: Sunday, 27 July 2014 5:50 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439 I have found the safest and easiest way to install a new version is to download the whole program file from the Legacy website - Download Download update, fill in email address and the verification code at the bottom. I then download this file, Legacy8setp.exe to my Downloads/Legacy folder. The file size is currently 68,718kb. Double click on this .exe file and it installs the whole program, overwriting parts of the previous version with any updates. It deosn't change any data or media or customised settings or the deluxe version code. When I have confirmed what the build number of the new version is, I rename the new .exe file with the build number as Legacy8setup800439.exe. I then know what version the file is and can use this to reinstall if I need to (and to install the updated program on my netbook). If needs be I can also go back to a previous version - Legacy8setup800427.exe or even Legacy75setup750278.exe. Sometime a new update includes a change in the data format, and then you can't easily go back to the old version without copying data through Gedcom. When you load a family file generated under the old version of the program, if the data format has been changed it goes through a process of checking source information . I suspect it is not checking sources but is converting data format - why doesn't it say what it is actually doing? This process of updating from a full program download has worked for me for several years with no installation problems. Kathy Thompson's comment about spending 4 weeks to do the code was not far off the mark. I spent 2-3 mths tinkering with this just at a concept stage which still show all manner of bugs; but the purpose of it was to show the idea quickly. This post is simply a reminder that not everything falls on deaf ears, some of us do try to help make Legacy that little bit better. I prefer that my genealogy program concentrate on genealogy and set their programming resources to that end. Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event
Doyce, When you do a standard uninstall, not everything is removed from the Legacy install directory - your Legacy Customer number for starters, so when you reinstalled the new download program, it would have installed to the same directory, and the program would have picked up your customer licence number. To uninstall completely, you need to first save all necessary files to another location (that is if you keep your family file and photos etc in the program directory, any usr settings etc) then when after you uninstall from the control panel uninstall a program, you have to physically go into MyComputer and delete the remaining program folder that Legacy was installed in. This folder is not removed in the uninstall process. Then when you reinstall Legacy using the install program, it will recreate the directory, install Legacy, and when you start Legacy, you will be required to re-input your customer number. Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event
That depends on you. You could try simply reinstalling the program in which case it will simply over-write to the same location and all the necessary files that the program uses. If that fixes your problem, so be it. If not, then you may need a clean install which can be a little time consuming depending on your level of computer skills. If you need help there; simply ask but we will need to know your skills. I may have a degree in computer science but I still can't read minds. We need to know what help is required when re-installing from scratch. RE: [LegacyUG] Apologies - another question.
Ian, If you customise the Family View to include Age at Death as you indicate, will show the age of the individual at their death. If there is no age, they are still alive, in which case you will need to activate the Individual Information dialog and look to the far right of the Birth date and Place to see the age of the living individual. Simply click any of the 5 labels to customise the Family View data, click the ellipses button next to a field you wish to use then select Age at Death option. Click [Select], then [Close]. Since there are a certain number of generations/page the radio button changes the number of generations to make a complete page. That is why we do not allow the users to hand enter a number. Here is a quick trick to reset the page numbers from All instead of having to use the radio button. Change the number of generations/page, that sets the number to a single page. Now when you change back to your number of generations the number will again be a single page worth. You can then use the radio button to increase the total generations by n-1 upwards. The first person on each follow-up page is a repeat from the previous chart so there are n-1 new generations per page. For 4 Gen/page the number will increase by 3, 5 gen will increase by 4 and 6 will increase by 5. The last part looked like something from an Einstein manuscript. He I understood - crystal clear - your explanation left me scratching my head. As far as placing question marks in the name I consider a no no and do not subscribe to such a practice. If the name is unknown (any part of it) I leave it blank - period - if there's nothing there, you know straight off that you don't have that information. Secondly, Legacy will balk when it catches a name field with a ? in it. This is in the standardisation tips. This is the system I use - for what it is worth. As names become known their bbb identifier can be recycled and so far I have not needed more than the 18278 unknown individuals available using this three letter identification system. CONVENTIONS FOR UNKNOWN NAME ENTRY Unknown First Name: enter ?am for a male, ?af for a female, ?au sex unknown. Unknown Last Name: enter ??abbb where a in both first and last names is a single capital letter code giving the approximate 33 year span (a generation) for the estimated year of birth. The century and codes follow: YearsCodes YearsCodes 1200-1299 A,B,C 1600-1699 M,N,O 1300-1399 D,E,F 1700-1799 P,Q,R 1400-1499 G,H,I 1800-1899 S,T,U 1500-1599 J,K,L 1900-1999 V,W,X 2000-2067 Y,Z bbb is an entry sequence code that starts with a through z, then aa through az, ba to bz etc. An example using a female with unknown first name, born about 1750, who is the 54th person with unknown last name would be entered as ?Qf ??Qbc. Formula for arriving at date code for b.(birth) to use with unknown name is: 1. Use b. if known 2. Use b. of spouse, or spouse of spouse (other wife etc.) 3. Use first m.-25 4. Use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent 5. For bp use bc-33 where bc=b. of child in next generation For bc use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent in previous generation 6. Use d.-65 8. Use dp-32 where dp=d. of parent 9. Use mc-53 where mc=m. of child 10. Use 33 years per generation from any known date. I am extremely hard of hearing, wear hearing aids and find some webinars hard to hear (even with full volume). My preference would be Closed Captions (subtitles). Header/Footer Option: Include page numbers on report - Include page total after page number (e.g., 1 of 4) It matters not which page number position I select - top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right - results are always the same as follows: 1 (1 of 6) - 2 (2 of 6) and so on. On one report it ceases (X of X) after 4 of 4 and starts numbering 5, 6, 7 - on another report it stops after 5 of 5 and starts with 6, 7, 8. I also question why it reads 1 (1 of 6) rather than just 1 of 6. I deselected the option to include page total which resolves the issue. I had never tried the option before anyway. Does this help? Kind Regards Mark Lang Beta Tester -Original Message- From: Eric Wiggers [mailto:e...@ericwiggers.com] Sent: Thursday, 9 February 2012 7:02 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] V7.5.0.142 Web Page Creation Today, I have been given to understand from Legacy Technical Support that this is the only list we support, so here goes: After updating to Legacy Version 7.5.0.142 last week, the first time I used 'Create Web Pages', the customized settings, which I have kept updated and saved over the last almost- seven years did not show up in the 'Create Web Pages' window. I then tried to 'Load' the most recently saved (using previous Legacy Version 7.5.0.112) customized settings in an attempt to restore them. Result was that nothing changed on the 'Create Web Pages' window, and subsequent investigation showed that the .wf0 file I had tried to load from was wiped out: apparently replaced with some default values - that particular .wf0 file size had changed from around 9KB to 2KB. I then tried to load from the next most recent .wf0 file, it likewise produced no changes in the window and was likewise wiped out. Fortunately I had backups to restore everything from. I have pointed out to Technical Support that I was not the only one experiencing this problem by pointing at the website: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/message/792 - where there are some very unhappy Legacy users with an identical issue, recently posted. Technical Support first responded with: Unfortunately, when the programmers change settings options for reports or web pages, this is going to happen. There's no way around it., and then even went as far as to offer me guidance on how to restore the customized settings, i.e. I would suggest making a list of the options you have set (I do quick screen shots and past them into a Word doc) and then update and reselect your choices. Of course this entails restoring my system to the previous version of Legacy (having backups, I could do that, but...), copying the saved settings (to something external to Legacy), re-updating Legacy, and then restoring the saved settings from that external saved source. To me, this is an unacceptable update method, especially given the heads-up that this is going to happen again in future updates. Looking for comments / suggestions. WHen I write a mail to the list i may have this: Message-Id: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2 When it appears on the list it has changed to: Message-Id: -424906331_103468...@mail.legacyusers.com which is wrong!! It should not change at all. For a real threading it should use In-Reply-To: the unique message-Id here In the above case it should have been: In-Reply-To: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2 You just replied to your own post. Your first mail had Message-Id: -424884225_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com Your second mail should've had a In-Reply-To field referencing that ID, but it didn't. Your second mail had this field: In-Reply-To: -424884678_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com Which, as you can see, is not the same number/ID as you original Message-Id. This causes threading to, at best, be a simple grouping and sorting by date/time, which is not very useful if you want to really follow a thread.. RE: [LegacyUG] Search for marriage date without day and month
OK, but if you broke your searches into smaller groups and scanned the results list of these groups, you would eventually be able to note the records you want this way. May take a fraction longer. I just tried my way again this time using Individual - Any Date - Before - 1893 AND Individual - Any Date - After - 1891 And the result included both those with dates such as 1892 and 16 May 1892 BUT you had to scroll the list to see which ones were without Day and Months. Sherry, Robert, It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in Word. I do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family), especially my new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about, but if you've already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply navigate to the index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one) and select the option to Update Field. Love that feature by the way :-) I have a 5th great grandfather/grandmother that shows up and the name is 'bolded' to show the direct line (another cool feature). For some reason, when I entered the parents for the 5th great grandfather, I don't get my relationship indicator anymore - it doesn't 'bold' him in the list with his siblings and it doesn't show 6th great grandfather/mother over his parents' names. I thought maybe the program only showed up to 5 and thought that was rather stingy of them (haha!) but decided to look at some other lines and I have another that at least shows to 7th great so that's not the answer. What might I have done here? I've gotten quite used to having those two 'direct line' features to help me navigate my file and I'm entering multiple generations beyond this one so I figure I'd better get this fixed now. RE: [LegacyUG] Locations list
Not that I'm aware of. The closest I could get to your wish is Reports All Reports Location Report On the Include tab, use All Locations Master Location Summary counts (this option minimises data in the report) On the Options tab, use Check first two options - Long and Short location name Sort order - standard left to right Then either Preview or Print. I do not recall ever studying Independent Cities when I did American History in my Uni degree, so I will research this myself off list. Here in Oz, we have states, no counties, only Cities and Suburbs (aka Towns). The only similarity to a County we have are Councils/Shires that are groups of Suburbs/Towns but that's a political jurisdiction not geographical. End of rant. Getting OT. Kind Regards Mark Lang -Original Message- From: Bobby Johnson [mailto:b...@brmemc.net] What about Washington D. C.? What county is it in? How about Richmond, VA? RE: [LegacyUG] Two sourcing questions
Tony, Re: Q2: The screen capture program I use (SnagIt) does capture the whole page by auto scrolling when it captures the web page - the final image is a longer one than when viewing through a browser. When you source a web page, also include an access date. Therefore if the page disappears after that date, you have a recorded date of when you viewed it, and an image of what it was. I have a few streets in censuses which no longer appear on maps. When I find out where the street used to be, I like to put that information into the notes field for the location. However, there doesn't appear to be a way to add a source to the notes field. In other words, when I go View master Lists Locations, select a location and edit it, there is no source button. Am I missing something? Question two. What is the best way to source a web page? I know how to do the source, I'm more interested in the best way to ensure that the information doesn't disappear when the web page concerned is updated, deleted etc. One possibility would be to screen-print the page and attach the jpg to the source, but sometimes the information spreads over more than one physical screen or scrolls down and then screen prints aren't really useful. Chris, When Geoff says they will be available in the archives, it is always referred to the webinar in question. In this case the cemeteries webinar would have the Q and A within the webinar, not separate. However the WGN-Cemeteries did not have any Q and A, as he browsed the listing of viewers for questions, but most had been handled off-air by Sherry and Brian, or he had mentioned most of the questions in the webinar itself. [LegacyUG] Legacy Web CONCEPT pages
Hello All, I have taken a respite for the past couple of months from writing my follow-up book to The Legacy Family PDF to actively put down on paper (well in this case - a web page) my ideas for improved Legacy Web Pages. The current Legacy web pages serve the program well, however, there have been numerous errors (as a programmer) from a web-coder's point of view that have concerned me for the past five major version iterations, as well as out-dated design issues. Some of the problems I have found in the Legacy web pages are the heavy use of tables as a layout format, lots of unclosed tags, which can make the former extremely difficult to following if you are able to understand and read the code. Naturally not a lot of you will look at the code, and because the current code has a degrading factor which browsers exploit and overlook, you'd be none the wiser, unless informed, as I have done. Who cares, well I do for one, and that leads onto the next point about the lack of CSS in the Legacy Web Pages. Cascading Style Sheets allow for all styling to be in one place, making it quicker, neater and easier to change. It is also evolving - CSS 3 is in a roll-out phase, and browsers are changing to adapt as it becomes available. In using CSS 3, I have been able to eliminate a lot of images that would have normally be used for layout such as rounded corners - no longer the case. Tackling these issues, I thought how would I have the web pages designed for Legacy in a way that will give them an all new fresh look. These concept pages have not and probably will not evolve into Legacy, but I am willing to try. And at the same time will be a little fun to see what you all think of the current pages verses the concept pages. Because of the advanced styling techniques used, make sure you are viewing these files using the latest browser version - FF7, Safari, Opera, Chrome15 or IE9. Remember these are concept pages, so may never see the light of day. I have set up specific email addresses in case you wish to respond to any of the web pages. I shall create a special web page that will detail the results if anyone responds. Even if you do not currently use web pages in Legacy, I am interested in what you think as well. To send any feedback, I will only reply to emails sent to the designated email sites I have set up. To do so, navigate to the site below then click the feedback tab is where you will find the email links. For further information, please see, visit the concept pages web site at http://www.easygensolutions.com/concept/index.html. Enjoy. Hi Folks, I have Legacy Deluxe 7.5.0.112 running on Windows XP I have recently noticed a problem when producing the Family Group Record report ... I have my options set to use Event Format = Use List Style formatting. If I Preview, Print [to printer] or Print to pdf a number of Events don't show the Date or Location fields / data. I have 27 events for George FUSSEN, 11 events for Mary McNEIFF [his wife], and 3 events for their marriage. The first 5 events for George are OK, the next 5 are missing Date Location [there is no field divider for these ones], number 11 is OK, 12-18 no date or location, 19 is OK, 20 21 not, 22 is OK, 23-27 not. For Mary 1-7 are OK, 8-11 are not. For their marriage all 3 events are OK. Testing what does and doesn't work - if I create the Family Group Record as Text or Html all data appears OK. If I create a web site for my database, all data is OK - see ... http://www.zades.com.au/susiez/family/7.htm If I change the Event Format to Use event sentence formatting and number each event or use bullet points all data appears OK. Interestingly if I change it back to Use List Style formatting the list style includes either numbers or bullet points [hangover from event sentence formatting option. To clear these I need to select event sentence formatting and no numbers or bullets then change it back to use list style formatting to clear the bullets or numbers. I don't want to use the sentence formatting - definitely the list style but it's useless without the dates and locations. I have reports produced previously where this was not a problem. At a best guess I think it was fine with version 6 and has changed more recently. I also have this problem in a separate database created in version 6. Note: sources are BASIC and not SOURCEWRITE - shouldn't make a different but who knows? Any suggestions? Regards . Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy terminology
Hello Helen, Ron is correct. I did start writing The Legacy Family sometime during Legacy 5 actually, missed the 6 release and just made it for version 7. There were in fact many ideas I wanted to incorporate into the book, they never made it, so I held these concepts over the follow-up book. The Legacy Family description you have cited is from the main page of the Legacy Store, but if you clicked the Extended Information link or this one http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TLFShow=ExtInfo [1] it will inform you of what you will find in each chapter. Since TLF came out, I have been working on the sequel which is now just over 500 pp and purely on Legacy only and calculate that I am only 1/3 finished. This followup will be more to what you are looking for in the fact that I have labelled it a Comprehensive How-To, which will cover ALL features, every single one! Uncheck any options still selected on the Options tab. Then check what is exported. Click the [Customise] button (Alt+U). In the Export these Items panel should be just 11 tags that data is exported. Whenever I have tried in the past, by just doing, it includes items, notes, comments, etc. that I don't want posted. I will gladly share my research with others, but because including relatives that are still living has proven successful to me in finding additional cousins and family lines, I want to try my best to protect their privacy, I want only minimal information posted by me. It is proving cumbersome to keep adding individuals the way I am doing it now. Therefore, I was hoping for a more efficient method. Thanks for your input! You must take care with your selections, though, to avoid unintended consequences. I post at RootsWeb rather than Ancestry.com and have found it very easy to create and post a GEDCOM from Legacy. It's possible to make the database private and view it to see the results. When you're satisfied with the information included, you can then make the database viewable. It takes a little tinkering around, but once you have it, you can save and reuse your selection in Legacy and do updates to the online database any time you wish. Currently, I have a private member tree posted there that I keyed in the 2,000+ individuals name by name. Ancestry doesn't allow, from what I see, a way for me to add an updated, more recent gedcom to an already existing tree so therefore I want to post a new tree with the 6,000+ individuals that are now in my file. What I would like to do is post a tree that includes the individuals name, birth date, marriage date, and death dates only. Reason I want to do this is to minimize the information put out there online, but that would maybe help to find a relative who may be searching the same family. Since putting this tree, on ancestry I now use Legacy Family Tree. I see that Legacy has the menu option of either FileExport to Ancestry Online family tree or FileExport to Gedcom File. Which, in your opinions, is the better method to use and how? My experience in the past with Gedcom files has not been very pleasant one, so I want to hopefully minimize the stress and utilize my family tree software to the best of its capabilities.
