[LegacyUG] Find a grave

2018-02-27 Thread Marli Yoder
When I click on the Find a grave id link i get a message that the website
is not secure.
"Can't connect securely to this page This might be because the site uses
outdated or unsafe TLS security settings. If this keeps happening, try
contacting the website's owner."
I am using windows 10 Legacy 9.0.0.209.

As far as I know I have not changed a setting. Work on my stuff from two
different computers located in two different places. Not connected to each
other, not the same family files etc. When I left this morning it was
working fine on 1st computer. Get to 2nd place and 2nd computer and I get

[LegacyUG] Where should my program files be???

2017-07-28 Thread Marli Yoder
Somehow I have the program files for legacy in different places, one of
which is the C:program files (x86) legacy 9.
I am confused. I thought I put it in the default when i downloaded it.. It
keeps "not responding" and taking forever for the screens to refresh etc..
Where should it go and how do I get it there correctly without loosing all
of my data?
 I do back up, C:users\yos\Documents\legacy family tree\data\legacy 2016 9

I also did family tree DNA (not finished yet) on my self and two other

Will be doing Ancestry as well on some of my family.

[LegacyUG] Report for Cemetery information

2015-02-09 Thread Marli Yoder
Hi- I have a list of all of my people buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. (event
address report) I need to put the names together (as husband wife, or son or
daughter of...) The Cemetery is being sued for failure to do upkeep. I need the
list to send to the MO Attorney General's office. Note that not all of my list
is directly related to me, but I don't want their names forgotten either. The
perpetual care fund was in place at some point...
So, what type of report would do this in an uncomplicated way? Any suggestions

Hope I made myself clear-

Here is how I do it.  I record the source using this template….

Cemetery Records Grave Markers, Plaques, Tombstones, Monumental Inscriptions
Grave Markers, Rural (most of mine are rural)

Here is how my citation looks:

Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (Lamar County, Mississippi), Eliza J.
Barefoot marker, personally read, 2001.

I then attach the photograph of the marker to the cemetery event.

Hello,

I photograph during cemetery trips and use the images as a source without
transcription.

I'm planning on listing the cemetery as the source, and record tombstone
details as the various source details.

Are there pros and cons to doing it this way?  Would like some comments before
I start.

Thanks,

Should they go in both?

Thus, a death is an EVENT, an obituary is a RECORD, and the newspaper that ran

Re: [LegacyUG] Mixed up marriage numbers

2012-10-06 Thread Marli Yoder
I tried the last back up. Same thing.
As to the chrash: When I click on the phot icon from family view it
sometimes freezes up, then goes to the photo gallery. Other times it freeses up
and I fventually get the message that Legacy is not responding. when I close it
out via task manager and then reopen, it starts as the last person from when I
last opened it, but everything that I added in the interim is still there.
Running windows 7.

Try restoring from your last known good backup. Give the restored

2012-10-03 Thread Marli Yoder
Not sure why it crashed- seems to hang up when I go into Pic Center to look at
what I have attached. This is from the family view screen- clicked on the
picture icon at the bottom of the person. I am not home to check for a backup.
Hope that works, as I have added about 50 scans of DC's to individuals (as
sorces for names of parents, wives, etc) Did the scan from the event (death
certificate). Sometimes it crashes there as well (when I save as)- says file not
found. Have the latest build.

Lumpers, how do you lump your census records?

I use one census source for each year and since the U.S. Census information
resides at the National Archives in Washington D.C., it doesn’t really matter
where you found it, the repository I use is “on-line data base”.

Example:
Master List name:  1860 Microfilm of U.S. Federal Census
Publication Facts:  Original data: 1860 U.S. census, population schedule. NARA
microfilm publication M653, 1,438 rolls. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and
Records Administration, n.d.

Personally, I attach the image of the cover or front sheet of each directory to
the Master Source entry for that directory and an image of the appropriate page
to the detail for the event. My personal opinion is that hard drive space is
relatively cheap, so, whenever I can, I attach an image of the
document/photo/etc. to the source. I also transcribe the actual entry to the
text/comments section of the source detail.

My only regret (maybe) thus far is that I have created a residence event and (if
applicable) an occupation event for each person mentioned in a directory.  It
may have been easier to just create  a directory event and enter the appropriate
information there.  However, I am still evaluating that decision.

Two-part question:

Since the City Directory databases seem to be recently updated (and I'm finding

person just for City Directory listings and I want to know what you do for City
Directory sources. Do you just do the transcription or do you *always* attach
the scan of the directory page?

Second, I found the thread in the archives regarding lumping the City Directory
page numbers into one citation (which I guess means adding the scan to the
image
list in the Picture Gallery Source Detail). Would like to hear from people who
lump it together for City Directories vs each directory page having its own
citation. Do you regret having done it one way over the other?

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Sourse vs. event

2012-04-19 Thread Marli Yoder
Please explain source verses event. I use Missouri, St. Louis 1900 Federal
Census as a SOURCE. Then I attach it as a Census EVENT to each individual that
is referenced in that event. I do not add individuals that are not part of the
family, but I do transcribe them. Am I understanding how you are using the
Source? (This is an example only) Some sound like they make a new Source for
each time they use it?

I do remember that each persons way is right, but I'm confused. (as usual)

I always attached the image of every source to the Source Detail, largely
because when I get a piece of new information which seems to conflict with
my record I can easily, and quickly, refer back to the original image(s)

I have not attached any census images, (in fact, I don't even download any
census images);  I only transcribe the census and attach the full
transcription as a source to each person listed on the census. On the
SourceWriter field that asks for ID of individual I put John Doe
household.

I do, however, include everyone in the household, whether servants, lodgers,
visitors, etc. Sometimes these turn out to be family members, at which point
I add them as individuals in my family file.

I don't use Census Event either. I do use Residence event for everyone
on the census, and if there is an occupation, I also do an Occupation
event. I use the source clipboard to make it quick and easy.

[LegacyUG] Photos

2012-03-24 Thread Marli Yoder
I've played with where I enter my photos. Now I need to know where I can find
help on where what photo prints on what report. Is that somewhere in the
archives, Didn't understand much of the help file.

I played with one Family Group Record. Found that I got photo's to print if I
had attached them to Birth,Christen, Death, Burial area.  But the output in
other reports was questionable. (Individual report, descendant chart
narrative had no photos.) Include photos all preferred boxes were checked.
I had originally attached DC Headstone to separate events with information,
but did not get both pictures to print in the Family Group Report. They did
print in the other mentioned reports.
Is there a general place to attach pictures to get them to print in the most
reports?

Maybe another Webinar?

I was just wondering how other people handle this? For example:
You find someone's birthdate (or year) from a census, so you attach the
census as the source. Later you read a few more things (obit, gravestone,
etc) so you add those as sources to that piece of data. Then you finally
receive a birth certificate that has the birthdate and you add that as a
 source.
Do you drop off some of these other sources and let, in this instance, the
birth certificate be the only source for that piece of data? How do I know
when enough is enough--or is it never enough and I should keep adding
 sources as I find them?!?

The short answer, as far as I am concerned, is it depends!

I do as you say, adding each new Source as I find it, sometimes ending up
with 5 or 6 Sources for the same fact.  I tend not to add several of the
same type of Source - for example, if I get someone's name from the
Baptism record of one of their children, I don't usually use the Baptism
records of any other of their children to Source their name.

Where I will delete an old one in favour of a new one is where I have a
better version.  For example, for a lot of records I had the record from
FamilySearch.org as a Source for Birth/Daptisms ir Marriage. Later on, I
was able to get an image of the relevant Church Record from Ancestry or
FindMyPast so I add that and then delete the FamilySearch Source because
that is only a transcription of the same record.

One exception to the deleting as above is where I have entered an Index
record for a B, M or D (readily available for British events) and
subsequently get the Certificate.  I don't delete the Index Source as this
would be useful to anyone coming after me and wanting to apply for the
same Certificate.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far...

Question: is the only reason to put a photo as a marriage event, rather than
 in
the marriage picture gallery, so that the photos print on reports?

 Thanks,
 Julia

I add anything that happened to the family (as a whole, or part of e.g. mum
and son, dad and three out of four children, mum and dad, the three siblings) -
some examples are group photos, a family holiday, a census event. If, for
arguments sake, I had a photo of a child's graduation and mum and dad are in
the
photo with the child I would add this as an event for the child, not the family
- however, if it was a group photo take at a picnic I would include it as a
marriage (read 'family') event because it isn't specific to any one person. If
I
find a census entry for one of the children on his / her own, they would get an
individual event - but if the rest of the family was together at a different
location that entry would still be a family / marriage event. I have also
changed the wording for reports to something like The following involved
[couplenames] and / or their children.

Here is something I have found to be useful now that I am using the to-do
list as a true research log.  When I add a repository such as the Alabama
Department of Public Health (death certificates) I attach a pdf copy of the
form you use to obtain a death certificate right to the repository listing.
When I write up a to-do for  someone to get their death certificate, I can
then easily copy off the form without having to go to the internet.

I have not downloaded subsequent to 7.5.0.147. Ran into a problem today I have
never experienced. Running the descendant report. Report options set at portrait
and printer preferences also set at portrait. I ran one report which showed as
portrait - all subsequent descendant reports turned up in landscape. Did check
repair - no change. Rebooted and same problem. Has anyone else experienced this
anomaly?

OK - I have a scanned copy of a will that is a .pdf file in my

Detail: Sarah A. Brookshire (13731…'  - then with the doc file
following as a second line that reads '…3192-02 May - Lewis A. -
 Will.pdf…'.

So how do I get rid of the error?

But how did you attach it?  Did you select File on the Picture Gallery
screen where you attach multimedia?  If you did, go to Sarah A
Brookshire's record, open the Assigned Sources screen and select the
Event Source to which the Will is attached.  Click on Edit Detail, then
on Multimedia, then on Picture.

Are you now seeing the icon of 2 sheets of lined paper with a seal
showing in the Picture Gallery?  If so, when you double-click on it does
your .pdf reader open and display the document?

If you are not seeing the logo, but one with a bit question mark, then
Legacy isn't finding your document.  Has it been removed or renamed
since you attached it?  If so, when you double-click on the question
mark icon, Legacy will give you various options.  Probably best to
browse the file for yourself.  Otherwise, click on Remove and then
re-load the Will file, being sure to use the File button.

You will need to do this for each file in the Missing Multimedia list.

Marli,

Ltools is a product which is written by a Legacy user to provide additional
functionality which for one reason or another Legacy have not chosen to
incorporate into their own product. Although initially written for the author’s
own use, many of the tools have been introduced at the request of Legacy users.
Some, for example, the HTML routine overcomes a number of bugs in the Legacy
Pedigree web pages and incorporates CSS to replace HTML attributes, that alone
is worth $10 for the deluxe edition (the basic addition is free).

A few of the functions are what may be regarded as a more specialised interest,
which Legacy is most unlikely ever to incorporate. It is not the only add-on for
Legacy, btw., indeed, Legacy has a number on their own website, but not LTools.
This post is really off- topic as LTools is not a Legacy product, so my
apologies, there is an Ltools Forum and I recommend visiting

No luck. I tried re-downloading. When that didn't work, I tried deleting all of

Marli,

I would not say that we are getting more problems than previously. As you will
have seen there are two possible circumstances for the return of a #380 error.
It would help if you would describe those under which your problem arose. and
whether or not you have recently updated.

Also your operating system please, and your full Legacy version number.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Father,Mother Rel:. Sources

2012-01-02 Thread Marli Yoder
I put the birth certificate as an event in the child's info, then clipboard it
to the parent and change the event to name and description as from (name)
birth certificate. Same with death obits if relationship is listed.
if death  or obit hasn't got a full name I still list it with name unknown or
unlisted in the notes field. (and a copy of what it says, or attach photo, etc.)

In the children's settings screen the birth relationship uses
biological. If you are going to add a source for a biological
parent-child relationship then you should also input data in the
children's settings screen. If you do not input that biological
relationship then reports will not report it nor will the source
citation be included.

The sources screen includes a list of possible places you can enter data
but you should only use those where there is data entered. The source
list includes such things as a sources for never married, had no
children for a marriage for example but these should only be used if
you have checked the appropriate box on the marriage information screen.
The rel to father and rel to mother are similar, the sources entered on
those should only be linked if you have actually entered a father/mother
relationship. I would use a birth certificate as a source for the name
and birth of the child. In the same way that a couple are considered
married if no special status is entered on the marriage scree, the
relationship of the child to the parents as biological is assumed.

For myself I would only go through that process to document parent-child
relationships for other than biological parents. Adopted children for
example with adoption papers as the sources. For a second marriage where
some children are step children of one parent I might use the second
marriage documentation as a source but generally I do not source step
relationships even though I will indicate the step relationship to the
second spouse on the children setting screen when I link the child of a
first marriage to a second marriage for report purposes.

Are you saying I should also, in the children's settings window
select birth for Mother/Father relationship to have the parents names

Or simpler, what is the process to properly source a persons parents

Subject: [LegacyUG] Baptism and Christining

When I have questions like this I go to my [US] Chaplain friend, who responded:

Baptism is the Christian Biblical Sacrament that symbolizes forgiveness of sins
and desire to accept Christ as Savior.  I will forego the Biblical references -
you probably know them.   While I grew up in a tradition that Baptized babies,
believing that there is a Covenental relationshp herein where by parents, say,
can accept the rite of Baptism for their child,  I have had a growing problem
with this - if the point is renunciation of sin and seeking forgiveness and
acceoptance by the Lord, how can a baby do this?  However, I am willing to
Baptize a child if parents can convince me that this is in accordance with their
beliefs, as opposed to just - tradition.

To Christen is to Christ Name or Christianize  the child, and is most
commonly used in liturical contexts - primarily (but not exclusively Roman
Catholic.  It almost always is done in conjunction with Baptism - altho the two
are not synonomous, and I have known them to be done separately (maybe a child
was hurriedly Baptized at birth because it was very sick, but they had not even
chosen a Christian name yet - so the Christening was done when the child was
well and at home - and a saint's name had been chosen - just as a for
example).  In those traditions, the child is USUALLY  Baptized AND given his
Christian Name in the context of the same ceremony.  Most RC children have a
full name inclusive of at least 4 names (including the family name). Therefore
one of my closest friends was Joseph Albert Emile Smith - Joseph being his
Christian name (usually a saint's name is used, and that saint is the person's
patron saint).  Many persons so named do not use their ENTIRE name on a day to
day basis - and unlike my friend Joe, the saint's name is usually not the first,
but stuck somewhere in the middle.  Joe signed his name Joseph A.E.
Smith.  As an aside - did you ever think about why there are so many
Marys in Irish families - and so many Marias in Italian and Hispanic
families?  Same reason - really good saint to have on your side .

Thus, everyone [with a Christian belief/background] has been baptised but not
all have been christened.

Thus, in Legacy I always use baptised unless I have a reason to switch to
christened.

John

[LegacyUG] Mapping

Hi again. Can I use the mapping feature to show where various families were?
(two different families at the same time? or is this another yeeechhh? )
Would LTools help? or a totally different program? I looked at Map My Family,

Specifically, I want to see a family in a Switzerland area and a family in a
Germany area to see how far they migrated to get together. I have some specific

[LegacyUG] Colors for events

2011-12-11 Thread Marli Yoder
Hi all, have a question. Would it work to have colors for events? I know it
would maybe look like an Easter egg, but if I had all say death
certificate events (just the event name) in blue, I could see quickly that I had
one. Would this be better than name sorting the events? I date sort them now, so
sometimes I have to go down the list anyway. Could they print in color on
reports? Or would this all work better in the to-do list? Or just better not to
do at all?

You can customize the colors of the data content so that anything that has a
source attached is a different color. Go to optionscustomizecolors and you can
change the way your screens look. I have mine so the data is blue then if there

Ok- I got Animap, hoping to clean up my locations. How do I find the errors to
fix? I know that I have them, because the county verifier states it when I enter
locations. But I have no clue as to how to search for them, and it seems like it
would be very time consuming to go through each location and do a date of
inception search in Animap.
Happy thanksgiving!

Marli,
It is Easy Peasy!

Go to “Reports” on the toolbar
Then select “All Reports”
And then the very last one on the list will be “USA County Verifier”

And there you go!

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events

When I do a census, first of all I add a fact -
-- Census, Federal 1900 (or whatever census is being done)
And I add the details -
Elyria, Lorain, Ohio, USA  and the full date that the census was done. NOT
ENUMERATION DAY...

Then in my notes I transcribe what I see in the census listing. I give the head
of household a full listing of EVERYONE in the household that is listed on that
census entry.  If there is someone not related I include in my notes that
persons status. If unrelated and I know that for a fact I state that.
After doing that, I use the repeat button, I go to each person that was listed
in that household and I give them the listing that pertains to them.  It is
sourced exactly like I do with the head of household.  The image is given to the
head of household for that census.  Once a person marries and becomes head of
household then they begin having the main note and images linked to them.

The only things linked to the marriage would be a copy of the marriage
record/Certificate, copy of a newspaper write up on the marriage or a scanned
image of the wedding invitation.  If a divorce occurred and I somehow had
documentation of that it would be linked to the marriage to support the divorce
date if known.  I do the same with birth facts birth Certificates,  death fact
death certificates, Obituaries (I type all in), and burial usually has the
headstone photo linked.

Hope this is clearer than mud and it helps.

Hi Bruce,

Personally, I like to include a transcription of the census in the Research
Notes where I have a quick reference of the family line. I add this
transcription to the Research notes of each family member listed in the census.
This allows a quick review (all the information in one place) and helps me in
making sure I am on the right path.

I enter the census as an 'event' for each person and include a transcription in
the notes as well. Overkill? Maybe.  If they are a direct line relative I also
include an image of the census page in the 'pictures' within the event.

As you can see from all the other replies, there is really no right or wrong,
it's what works best for you.  Sometimes, though, we haven't yet figured out
what's best!  However, this is coming from one who many would not consider a
'true' genealogist - I collect most anyone that connects to my line. I now have
approximately 23,000 relatives in a single tree of around 340,000 names.  I also
work very closely with another researcher on the same tree and we each enter the
data a little differently.  Documentation/sourcing is very important and I don't
think you can really overdo it.  Thankfully Legacy can handle it!

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events

2011-11-06 Thread Marli Yoder
I guess I get confused. Why would you want to put a census in as a marriage
event? (in the marraige part of the screen- the one that shows the marraige
date, status, etc.) I would never know that I had a census entry for a year if
it was there. I don't look for anything except specific marriage information
there (ie- record book from church, or marriage certificate, newspaper
annoucement, etc.). I guess the research notes part of my question should be a
new thread.  I will copy paste it to a new thread. But it is just as
confusing.

2011-11-06 Thread Marli Yoder
Maybe I am in the wrong area. In the Individual Information screen I have all of
the things I can infer from censuses, directories, books, etc. I need to SEE
everything. (no spatial development my grade school test said!!!) So I put all
of the basics in the Individual's information screen. Since watching Geoff on
adding records (some of it, grand twins woke up in the middle) I like the way he
was putting info in the event fact notes area. Then I got off track to the
notes, general, med screen. But I started a new thread on that question. Am I
just misunderstanding the words we are using to describe the area where we are
putting this info?

important part of your research to determine which census are missing?
If it is important, do you try to infer from you other events
