[LegacyUG] Report for Cemetery information
Hi- I have a list of all of my people buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. (event address report) I need to put the names together (as husband wife, or son or daughter of...) The Cemetery is being sued for failure to do upkeep. I need the list to send to the MO Attorney General's office. Note that not all of my list is directly related to me, but I don't want their names forgotten either. The perpetual care fund was in place at some point... So, what type of report would do this in an uncomplicated way? Personally, I attach the image of the cover or front sheet of each directory to the Master Source entry for that directory and an image of the appropriate page to the detail for the event. My personal opinion is that hard drive space is relatively cheap, so, whenever I can, I attach an image of the document/photo/etc. to the source. I also transcribe the actual entry to the text/comments section of the source detail. My only regret (maybe) thus far is that I have created a residence event and (if applicable) an occupation event for each person mentioned in a directory. It may have been easier to just create a directory event and enter the appropriate information there. However, I am still evaluating that decision. [LegacyUG] Sourse vs. event
Please explain source verses event. I use Missouri, St. Louis 1900 Federal Census as a SOURCE. Then I attach it as a Census EVENT to each individual that is referenced in that event. I do not add individuals that are not part of the family, but I do transcribe them. Am I understanding how you are using the Source? (This is an example only) Some sound like they make a new Source for each time they use it? I do remember that each persons way is right, but I'm confused. [LegacyUG] Photos
I've played with where I enter my photos. Now I need to know where I can find help on where what photo prints on what report. Is that somewhere in the archives, Didn't understand much of the help file. I played with one Family Group Record. Found that I got photo's to print if I had attached them to Birth,Christen, Death, Burial area. But the output in other reports was questionable. (Individual report, descendant chart narrative had no photos.) Include photos all preferred boxes were checked. I had originally attached DC Headstone to separate events with information, but did not get both pictures to print in the Family Group Report. They did print in the other mentioned reports. Is there a general place to attach pictures to get them to print in the most reports? Maybe another Webinar? I keep all of mine, as I don't use the to-do as well as I could. So I can see at a glance where I've looked. They are not as easily seen) Marli Yoder A M Farms Eureka Sturgeon Missouri From: Jenny M Benson ge...@cedarbank.me.uk To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, March 22, 2012 1:01:17 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Do you limit your # of sources for one fact? julia m wrote: I was just wondering how other people handle this? For example: You find someone's birthdate (or year) from a census, so you attach the census as the source. Later you read a few more things (obit, gravestone, etc) so you add those as sources to that piece of data. Then you finally receive a birth certificate that has the birthdate and you add that as a source. Do you drop off some of these other sources and let, in this instance, the birth certificate be the only source for that piece of data? How do I know when enough is enough--or is it never enough and I should keep adding sources as I find them?!? The short answer, as far as I am concerned, is it depends! I do as you say, adding each new Source as I find it, sometimes ending up with 5 or 6 Sources for the same fact. I tend not to add several of the same type of Source - for example, if I get someone's name from the Baptism record of one of their children, I don't usually use the Baptism records of any other of their children to Source their name. Where I will delete an old one in favour of a new one is where I have a better version. For example, for a lot of records I had the record from FamilySearch.org as a Source for Birth/Daptisms ir Marriage. Later on, I was able to get an image of the relevant Church Record from Ancestry or FindMyPast so I add that and then delete the FamilySearch Source because that is only a transcription of the same record. One exception to the deleting as above is where I have entered an Index record for a B, M or D (readily available for British events) and subsequently get the Certificate. I don't delete the Index Source as this would be useful to anyone coming after me and wanting to apply for the same Certificate. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). If, for arguments sake, I had a photo of a child's graduation and mum and dad are in the photo with the child I would add this as an event for the child, not the family - however, if it was a group photo take at a picnic I would include it as a marriage (read 'family') event because it isn't specific to any one person. If I find a census entry for one of the children on his / her own, they would get an individual event - but if the rest of the family was together at a different location that entry would still be a family / marriage event. I have also changed the wording for reports to something like The following involved [couplenames] and / or their children. Cheers Jan No virus found in this message. Are you now seeing the icon of 2 sheets of lined paper with a seal showing in the Picture Gallery? If so, when you double-click on it does your .pdf reader open and display the document? If you are not seeing the logo, but one with a bit question mark, then Legacy isn't finding your document. Has it been removed or renamed since you attached it? If so, when you double-click on the question mark icon, Legacy will give you various options. Probably best to browse the file for yourself. Otherwise, click on Remove and then re-load the Will file, being sure to use the File button. You will need to do this for each file in the Missing Multimedia list. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Father,Mother Rel:. Sources
I put the birth certificate as an event in the child's info, then clipboard it to the parent and change the event to name and description as from (name) birth certificate. Same with death obits if relationship is listed. if death or obit hasn't got a full name I still list it with name unknown or unlisted in the notes field. Sources In the children's settings screen the birth relationship uses biological. If you are going to add a source for a biological parent-child relationship then you should also input data in the children's settings screen. If you do not input that biological relationship then reports will not report it nor will the source citation be included. The sources screen includes a list of possible places you can enter data but you should only use those where there is data entered. The source list includes such things as a sources for never married, had no children for a marriage for example but these should only be used if you have checked the appropriate box on the marriage information screen. The rel to father and rel to mother are similar, the sources entered on those should only be linked if you have actually entered a father/mother relationship. I would use a birth certificate as a source for the name and birth of the child. In the same way that a couple are considered married if no special status is entered on the marriage scree, the relationship of the child to the parents as biological is assumed. For myself I would only go through that process to document parent-child relationships for other than biological parents. Adopted children for example with adoption papers as the sources. For a second marriage where some children are step children of one parent I might use the second marriage documentation as a source but generally I do not source step relationships even though I will indicate the step relationship to the second spouse on the children setting screen when I link the child of a first marriage to a second marriage for report purposes. Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism and Christining
Please, this has nothing to do with Legacy. Please get off this topic and back to the point. Use whichever one you want to convey what you want Marli Yoder A M Farms Eureka Sturgeon Missouri From: John Roose jbro...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Mon, December 19, 2011 1:02:49 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Baptism and Christining When I have questions like this I go to my [US] Chaplain friend, who responded: Baptism is the Christian Biblical Sacrament that symbolizes forgiveness of sins and desire to accept Christ as Savior. I will forego the Biblical references - you probably know them. While I grew up in a tradition that Baptized babies, believing that there is a Covenental relationshp herein where by parents, say, can accept the rite of Baptism for their child, I have had a growing problem with this - if the point is renunciation of sin and seeking forgiveness and acceoptance by the Lord, how can a baby do this? However, I am willing to Baptize a child if parents can convince me that this is in accordance with their beliefs, as opposed to just - tradition. To Christen is to Christ Name or Christianize the child, and is most commonly used in liturical contexts - primarily (but not exclusively Roman Catholic. It almost always is done in conjunction with Baptism - altho the two are not synonomous, and I have known them to be done separately (maybe a child was hurriedly Baptized at birth because it was very sick, but they had not even chosen a Christian name yet - so the Christening was done when the child was well and at home - and a saint's name had been chosen - just as a for example). In those traditions, the child is USUALLY Baptized AND given his Christian Name in the context of the same ceremony. Most RC children have a full name inclusive of at least 4 names (including the family name). Therefore one of my closest friends was Joseph Albert Emile Smith - Joseph being his Christian name (usually a saint's name is used, and that saint is the person's patron saint). Many persons so named do not use their ENTIRE name on a day to day basis - and unlike my friend Joe, the saint's name is usually not the first, but stuck somewhere in the middle. Joe signed his name Joseph A.E. Smith. As an aside - did you ever think about why there are so many Marys in Irish families - and so many Marias in Italian and Hispanic families? Same reason - really good saint to have on your side . Thus, everyone [with a Christian belief/background] has been baptised but not all have been christened. Thus, in Legacy I always use baptised unless I have a reason to switch to christened. Thanks Sally. Russ- I'm a visual person. When I look at a person, the events tell me what I have found, or not found. Marli Yoder A M Farms Eureka Sturgeon Missouri From: MarksLady ka...@miprofgenie.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Mon, November 7, 2011 1:51:56 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events When I do a census, first of all I add a fact - -- Census, Federal 1900 (or whatever census is being done) And I add the details - Elyria, Lorain, Ohio, USA and the full date that the census was done. NOT ENUMERATION DAY... Then in my notes I transcribe what I see in the census listing. I give the head of household a full listing of EVERYONE in the household that is listed on that census entry. If there is someone not related I include in my notes that persons status. If unrelated and I know that for a fact I state that. After doing that, I use the repeat button, I go to each person that was listed in that household and I give them the listing that pertains to them. It is sourced exactly like I do with the head of household. The image is given to the head of household for that census. Once a person marries and becomes head of household then they begin having the main note and images linked to them. The only things linked to the marriage would be a copy of the marriage record/Certificate, copy of a newspaper write up on the marriage or a scanned image of the wedding invitation. If a divorce occurred and I somehow had documentation of that it would be linked to the marriage to support the divorce date if known. I do the same with birth facts birth Certificates, death fact death certificates, Obituaries (I type all in), and burial usually has the headstone photo linked. Hope this is clearer than mud and it helps. Bruce- (and everyone- I need all the help I can get on this one) when you put things in the research notes, if you have numerous notes already in there, how does one find the notes that tell you what you have got or not gotten on that person? I'm still really shaky on how the whole research notes thing is used. When I put things into it, I end up with page after page of disconnected information. A paragraph here and another there. I want to source each, but haven't figured out how to source each one separately. I realize that I have opened a can of worms, but without them one may not catch the trophy fish. I add this transcription to the Research notes of each family member listed in the census. This allows a quick review (all the information in one place) and helps me in making sure I am on the right path. I enter the census as an 'event' for each person and include a transcription in the notes as well. Overkill? Maybe. If they are a direct line relative I also include an image of the census page in the 'pictures' within the event. As you can see from all the other replies, there is really no right or wrong, it's what works best for you. Sometimes, though, we haven't yet figured out what's best! However, this is coming from one who many would not consider a 'true' genealogist - I collect most anyone that connects to my line. I now have approximately 23,000 relatives in a single tree of around 340,000 names. I also work very closely with another researcher on the same tree and we each enter the data a little differently. Documentation/sourcing is very important and I don't think you can really overdo it. Thankfully Legacy can handle it! Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events
I guess I get confused. Why would you want to put a census in as a marriage event? (in the marraige part of the screen- the one that shows the marraige date, status, etc.) I would never know that I had a census entry for a year if it was there. I don't look for anything except specific marriage information there (ie- record book from church, or marriage certificate, newspaper annoucement, etc.). I guess the research notes part of my question should be a new thread. I will copy paste it to a new thread. But it is just as confusing. It is clear that a single person in a Census would have the Census as an Individual Event. But where you others put a Census Event for a couple? Individual? Marriage? Both? Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events
Maybe I am in the wrong area. In the Individual Information screen I have all of the things I can infer from censuses, directories, books, etc. I need to SEE everything. (no spatial development my grade school test said!!!) So I put all of the basics in the Individual's information screen. Since watching Geoff on adding records (some of it, grand twins woke up in the middle) I like the way he was putting info in the event fact notes area. Then I got off track to the notes, general, med screen. But I started a new thread on that question. Am I just misunderstanding the words we are using to describe the area where we are putting this info? I like to look at the chronology and/or reports and be able to tell if I've found them on all available census during there lifetime. If you do not use a Census event, is it not an important part of your research to determine which census are missing? If it is important, do you try to infer from you other events (residence, occupation, etc)? [LegacyUG] How do you all use the resource notes
Bruce- (and everyone- I need all the help I can get on this one) when you put things in the research notes, ( the part that has Notes general, research, medical) if you have numerous notes already in there, how does one find the notes that tell you what you have got or not gotten on that person? I'm still really shaky on how the whole research notes thing is used. When I put things into it, I end up with page after page of disconnected information. A paragraph here and another there. I want to source each, but haven't figured out how to source each one separately. I realize that I have opened a can of worms, but without them one may not catch the trophy fish. I hope I have worded this so you see what I am trying to ask. Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events
Thanks Brian. That was what I thought. Seems like it's not where I need to be putting my notes. I think I will stay with my individuals' information -events/facts section so I can see everything (visually) Marli From: Brian/Support br...@legacyfamilytree.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Sun, November 6, 2011 2:21:35 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events It is not possible, in Legacy, to source parts of Notes.
