RE: [LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

2014-03-04 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Mike is correct. Consider the fact that a Microsoft Word Document can also
contain JPEG images, trying to add a .DOC or .DOCX file to the Picture Center
is the same as trying to add a .PDF. They are NOT images but rather containers
that may or may not have images inside of them. The Picture Center is working
just fine in this regard.

The issue here seems to be that embedded images are regularly transported via a
PDF file. I have certainly been supplied with many scanned images and documents
that were created as PDF files. Depending on context, I sometimes convert them
to a JPG copy for ease of display, but such duplication into another format is
somewhat untidy from a database point of view.

The WMF is a video file that some sites use by very few.

There are many more NON priority type of file. Yes there are some Wizards that

Wm,

Thanks. Adobe reader has been frustrating me. Discovered latest and
improved version of

PDF-XChange Viewer isPDF-XChange Editor product/pdf-xchange-editor. I ran
the installer for 64 bit from
http://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads?key=934aa91f08cd3ccf34c978f3911e5dd3

Could not get the save zipped file and then unzip and install to finish
installing.

I was thinking the one to save PDFs was also the one needed to open
them, but it isn't. The basic IrfanView will open PDF files.
However, I just discovered there's a bug in that IrfanView doesn't
display PDFs within the Open File dialogue. I always open PDFs in
IrfanView by right-clicking the PDF icon and selecting IrfanView from

Go to the IrfanView Home page and just to the right of the waterfall graphic
there is a down load link. Select the link for PLUGINS/ADDONS. That will
download the plugins package. Install that and you're all set. There are
directions on the site (Link on the left side of the page) but it is pretty
much plug n' play.

Easiest way to convert a PDF to an image is to download and install PDF-XChange
Viewer (http://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads). It gives you the
option to export to an image (.tiff). You can manipulate that file in
IrfanView. You can also perform minor edits on PDF files with PDF-XChange
Viewer. This is the free version.

[LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

2014-02-28 Thread Dave Keeney
Version 8

What is the best practice for renaming pdf files that are attached to
Legacy 8 events, sources, etc.?

Picture Center works great for jpg files but not so well with pdf files -
or at least I haven't found the way yet.

Relinker seems to work fine for files that have been moved but not for
files that have been renamed.

Do I have to do it individually or resort to MSACCESS (or maybe LTOOLS)?

How do others do this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

2014-02-28 Thread Sherry/Support
Picture Center works only with graphic file formats.

You need to rename the file through Windows Explorer and then relink
it in Legacy.

What is the best practice for renaming pdf files that are attached to Legacy
 8 events, sources, etc.?

Picture Center works great for jpg files but not so well with pdf files - or
at least I haven't found the way yet.

Relinker seems to work fine for files that have been moved but not for files
 that have been renamed.

Do I have to do it individually or resort to MSACCESS (or maybe LTOOLS)?

 How do others do this?

If you can change the item to a format other than pdf.

I had many .pdf files that just contained one picture...

I just opened them and did a screen capture and saved the screen capture as
the same filename.jpg
(I use the free irfanview, but there are many options for photo/image
software)

Now my pics show in (most) reports, and I don't get complaints that the pdf
wont open or wasn't avail to be viewed

never did understand the thought process for using a pdf format for SINGLE
images

Just my own preferences.

Most unprotected PDF files one can copy and paste out of the PDF and into a
photo editor and then save that file as a photo.

Jay, I'm surprised you go through all those extra steps when you say
you use the free IrfanView. If you install IrfanView's free add-ons
you can open PDFs directly in IrfanView and then all you have to do
is save them in a different format.
