[LegacyUG] hacker/spammer problems

2014-04-19 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
In some cases, the address appears to be taken over by the
hacker/spammer, and any e-mail is intercepted and answered by the
hacker/spammer. When that happens, the owner of the e-mail address
must be contacted by phone or other method and asked to contact their
ISP and change their password.

No need for anger on the list :-). Legacy moderators are extremely
responsive and do everything they can to help. In this day we should
all be savvy enough to simply delete unwanted spam. That subscriber
probably doesn't access his email a lot and doesn't even know what's
going on. Perhaps a gentle, kind email to him explaining the need to
change his password would be helpful? It's not his fault after all
and he needs the opportunity to fix it. Annoyance might be
appropriate if it were intentional but it appears to be a hack

Thanks to Brian for being on top of these hacks and immediately
 alerting the list :-).

Legacy support- why hasn't this email been unsubscribed. How many
of these s*p*a*m messages do we have to receive followed by
support's warning that the individual's account had been hacked.
It is the same person over and over again. You do have the
 ability to unsubscribe this person.

Re: [LegacyUG] hacker/spammer problems

2014-04-19 Thread magnoliasouth
I don't see what the big deal is anyway. I would never click a link unless
I thought it was trustworthy. Not even from users here on the list. That's
good practice, period.

In the end, mailing lists are magnets for spammers. You could require that
the first so many messages go through a moderator, but you'll still have
hacked accounts and that as they say, is that. In the end, it is your own
responsibility to take care of yourself and use good judgement in the
matter.
