Greetings,

Well, it's not a Libretto, but it is a very nice subnotebook,
slightly larger than Libretto, but about same weight.

Even has 9 widescreen/touchscreen display along with
(2) onboard USB ports,
a LAN port, and
built-in WiFi.

So no need to carry around so many PC cards!

Also, including a custom made neoprene sleeve with outside pocket.

Check it out at on eBay

I don't have upload capability to my website at this moment, but just a
brand-new ad for the new Zaurus SL-C3000.
4GB HDD, same basic flip and swivel layout, new keyboard with circle 4-way
directional pad and center enter button replaces the old seperate 4-way
buttons, looks thicker than the old model (but can't tell since it is not out
yet), usual PC connectivity, advertised wireless internet card capability (can
be had for the old model as well), has the standard daijirin? j-j dictionary
and the two j-e, e-j genius dictionary sets, etc.
Full details now out on their website http://ezaurus.com/
news release
http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/041015-a.html
available from November 10, 2004. about 80,000 yen or about $800 USD.
otherwise, pretty much the same as before. HDD lets you store lots of stuff, so
maybe someone will think of putting some fun apps on the HDD - PC emulator?
well, keep dreaming since the machine's so slow, but at least you can get
Mozilla on the baby and run it like a mini^mini Libretto.

Subject: Crazy Sofmap sale prices...
 No kidding about their sales!
They had a killer blowout ad. Here's some silly prices
 1) Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 for 33,000 Yen!!!
Yes, they're blowing these babies out for the SL-C3000 coming next month,
but really, really amazing price on this model!
 2) Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX7 for 28,000 Yen!! Way cheaper than even dell.com
sales and so forth, typically only seen at 45,000 yen to 50,000 yen.
 3) Sony Clie PEG-UX50 for 26,000 Yen! Yes, old model vs. the lastest baby
that does 30fps video here that's out in Japan, but great price on an older,
but capable model.
 4) Fuji Finepix F420 for 14,000 Yen. Amazing price on a nice 3MP (upsampled
to 6MP) for those that love FujiFilm digicams like me. More so, the very
latest F450 for only 32,000 Yen!! Astounding vs. even USA where it hasn't even
gone below $350 yet!
 5) P4 3.06Ghz boxed for 14,500 Yen. About $150 USD, but about $200 typically
in the USA.
 6) iPOD mini for 16,000 Yen!
I almost bought one just oogling this price (about $160USD), but must keep
to a budget! =p
 7) Canon IXY Digital 500 (same as the Elph 5MP in the USA) for 23,000 Yen
(about $230 USD). Jaw-dropping price on this 5MP, which can't even go below
$300 typically w/o some killer dell.com + coupon sale. Must be because Canon
is ready to release a new IXY 600 soon, which is causing the price drop.

anyways, come out of the 'correct' exit and you will face a L street where
you can either walk forward down the street, or turn right and walk down that
street. Can't miss it since it has HUGE buildings all around glowing with SALE
signs and blinking like there was no end. Usually lots of cute gals out front
handing out kleenex packs for free.
Head straight ahead on that L and you'll hit the T. Cross the street to the
other side, Sofmap is the store that's on the right of the three main shops on
the T.
Inside, lots of crazy used laptops for sale in very good condition - Sony U50
series for as low as 120,000 Yen (or about $1200 USD), etc., and many other
models of varying makes and prices. A killer place if you can find the laptop
of your dreams here used.

No duty free shopping, so add about 5%-10% for tax (whatever it is).
Otherwise, very nice people, prompt attention, and lots of fun goodies new and
old to look over. Great place for brand-new, but slightly older products since
they're usually marked down way low. Sales are a must to catch - they'll have
silly prices so low, you wonder how they even make any money on these items.

Anyways, must stop window-shopping and go to see the rest of real TOKYO
instead of gadgets galor =( Very bad place, Akihabara, for techies =P
--- Michael Hodish [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

David, in case you don't know of it, go to Sofmap store #8 in Akihabara.
Easy to find. Take the exit to Akihabara electric town, walk out to the left
at the bottom of the stairs. You will be on a small side street, Casio store
should be just ahead on your right. Walk down that street, 1 block to a T
intersection. Cross the street, turn right, the store is about 20 meters
ahead on your left.

PuPuRu has an office here in Tokyo near the main Tokyo Station (next to the
Royal park). See their website for their location - they're around the
Takashimaya dept. store that's on Chuo Dori near the Nihombashi station stop.
Very convenient! I'm on their executive plan, costs me about 12000 yen to
start off, add a few dollars more for insurance, etc. so you'll be around
13000-14000 yen if you add a few features. the minutes aren't dirt-cheap, at
least 23-25 yen per 20-30 seconds or whatever they told me, but very acceptable
given that I'm not buying a pre-paid (sold only to residents) or regular cell.
Sadly, closed on weekends, so forget it then!
---
weather is nice - ranges from sunny enough to wear t-shirt and shorts to breeze
cloudy enough to make you wear pants and a jacket. Otherwise, the usual on and
off again rain, humidity is normal for Tokyo, which may range from dry to damp
for Americans, and is nice weather thus far for the month.

Raymond ,
A capsule hotel is a system of extremely dense occupancy. Guest space is
reduced in size to a modular plastic or fibreglass block roughly 2 m by
1 m by 1 m, providing room to sleep and little more, although facilities
usually include a television and other electronic entertainment. These
capsules are then grouped and stacked, two units high. Luggage is
usually stored in a locker away from the capsule. Privacy is maintained
by a curtain at the open end of the capsule but noise pollution can be
high. Washing facilities are communal and there are often restaurants,
or at least vending machines, and other entertainment facilities.

Hi David and readers,

I'm reading this on a Sony U50 now :)
the size of the LCD is bigger than my SL-C860, so I'm actually finding
it ok for reading text at 800x600

I agree about the stylus, first thing I did was buy a pen style one :) LOL

PCMCIA days are numbered I believe...
most wireless internet devices have a CF adapter now, can't remeber the
last time I put a PC card in a laptop...
and USB 2.0 devices are everywhere now.

RE back lighting
seems fine to me, and much brighter than my other laptops (panasonic,
sharp and sony).

RE touch scrren
the sony software is good for Japanese input, but for $19.95 writePen is
excellent at writing recognition.
after about a week I got used to writing on the screen.

RE small motherboard
yes, a lot of the U internal space is for cooling I expect.

RE attached to keyboard
not bad, that would be interesting :)
Personally at home I use an external USB keyboard, but on the run pen
input is ok.

An optical drive would reduce the battery time too much I expect, and
other than install OS and software, the number of times I've used my
iLink DVD/CD-RW is low.

I'm still wondering when / if Toshiba is going to introduce another
Libretto
Sharp and Sony certainly haven't given up on the mini-computers

regards,
-Brett

Use babelfish.altavista.com to translate.

---

In summary, this is what happens when the design team focuses on trying new
ideas without really testing the concepts in the marketplace -- an interesting
product, limited market.

Oh, let's get rid of the keyboard since it seems most people have a hard time
using a laptop keyboard in the trains, a lot of people use cell phones to surf
the web anyways, and why not?

Bad idea -- you can't get input in fast with a touch-screen, and a small laptop
PC doesn't have the connectivity of a cell phone for web browsing by default.
(and certainly, nobody has wifi in a train, yet)

Touch-screen?!? On such a high-res panel?!? Might as well forget the high-res
part since you'll never really keep it that small (unless you really want to
look at text that is displayed normally on a 15 LCD panel many times smaller
on the U's 5 panel. In other words, imagine the text of this message appearing
3x smaller on the U-screen, and try to read that all day long!). And everyone
hates to clean dirty LCD screens.

Let's have an external, wierd looking stylus because we can't seem to find a
good stylus slot location, so why not make it look stylish and have it
external? Fastest way to lose the stylus and wind up poking at the screen with
your fingertips because you've left it back on the desk.

Let's throw out the PCMCIA card slot since we've got 'enough' things built-in.
The moment any laptop design tries that, sales collapse. It's the only way to
get hooked up to all of the latest wireless options not built-in, cell phone
wireless connectivity, memory adapters, etc. It's literally and still a
must-have in this age and era, and not having one in a laptop is just crazy
(esp. on a $2000 mininote book).

Let's backlight it with white LEDs instead of a fluorescent bulb. Okay, not
too bad since Palm PDAs all have white LED backlighting, and 5 screens aren't
hard to light properly with white LEDs. But oh, god! Just toss color accuracy
and rendition straight out the door! White LEDs are far worse than fluorescent
bulbs in rendering colors accurately on LCD screens, so forget about using this
U-series notebook for color accurate video editing, photo editing, or simply
viewing of such media. Here, think fancy PDA and you'll be okay, but
definitely nowhere near the quality of the regular laptop LCD panels.

However, if you look at the pictures of the motherboard size (in comparision to
the 1.8 hard drive), you can see what is possible in today's designs, and
hopefully, some company will release a 'sensible' Libretto-like design with
built-in CD/DVD burner in a 2lbs, Libretto 110-like size and form factor.

Personally, I would have greatly prefered a LCD panel U attached to a foldable
keyboard unit (similar to those for PDAs) in a similar form-factor. This would
have allowed the best of both worlds (tablet/laptop), and allow rapid text
entry on the go or at the desk.

IMO
best bet if you don't have a bootable CD-ROM (or one you can use in DOS) is to take
out the HDD and
copy install files via a deaktop then go from there.
sounds like you have a FDD only?

 Hi David,

I used the XP drivers from Toshiba and it all installed easily. You
might want to install a bit more than the standard 128MB ram
Win XP installs and works, but I found Win ME was much faster.

How do you use the drivers?
ATM, I can't even boot in safe mode, or from the 6 disk boot disk set without this
 stop error.

this won't work,

partition the L1's HDD
put the install files on the L1 HDD 2nd partition,
then install on the L1 (using the L1 HDD)
(from the 2nd partition.)

I did the install on a desktop. Boots and runs fine.
Now reinstalled in the L1, I can boot, but no matter which boot mode I select (F8) I

you'll have to take out the HDD and copy install files to it from a desktop if you
have no bootable CD or FDD.
or
if you have a bootable FDD you can setup the HDD as FAT32 and copy the files via FDD
partition HDD C=9GB D=the rest (FAT32)
RAR up a small OS like win98
copy to HDD via FDD (takes a LONG time)
install that,
then copy XP files to hdd in win 98
reboot from FDD and install XP from the partition

NOTE: you may want to keep a small (100MB) ghost image of win 98 (for future rescue)
on the D partition...
from memory L1 has no real PCMCIA support in dos as far as I know (if you can get a
LAN card working in dos, that will be faster)
from memory L1 firewire and USB are not supported fully in dos.

just my opinions... might be a better way

How can I get XP installed?? I have no CDROM in the machine, only USB and Firewire

 Hello people

I just bought a L5 (wifi model) to replace my current 100CT, now i have
heard some rumors [1] that the wifi model has a 1.8 inch HDD instead of the
standard 2.5 inch. I have search the web for information on 1.8 inch HDD's
and found that the maximum capacity made seems to be 5GB drives: The L5
comes with 20GB, this made me wonder. And as I dont feel like ripping my new
L5 open, then I would like to hear what you people on the list have to say.

Does it, or does it not come with a 1.8 HDD?

 Kind regards
 Jan Novak

[1] The size rumor is to be found here:
 http://memebeam.org/toys/ToshibaLibretto
And i quote: Note that the situation with the L5 model is much different:
it uses Toshiba's new drives with 3.3V logic. Furthermore, while the one
without wireless LAN has a 2.5 (MK2020GLP [17]), the one with wireless LAN
 has Toshiba's next-generation 1.8.

Ha ha you'll be lucky! I shattered the screen on my 30CT (same screen as
 50 and 70 I believe) - new ones are 250-odd quid, and I haven't seen any

Some of those plastic bits are mostly magnesium alloy, I think. But I think

It does not say one per person or household, just one per product.

I was stumbling over the wording for that.

The only way you'd be sending fraudulent multiple submissions under this
wording is if you copied the UPC and tried to redeem 2 rebates from one
 product.

Sounds right, but they're almost LOOKING for someone to buy out their stock
 in one swell foop.

Drat, here's what I got about an hour after placing my order:
 --
Thank you for placing your order with Gateway Accessories Store.

The following item from your order is currently on backorder. While we
cannot deliver the item as quickly as anticipated, we expect to deliver
 within 30 days.

Now I'm going to have to figure out if I cancel the order. If they send a
receipt dated the day it ships, it will most likely be outside of the
 rebate period.

Their tech support is open 24/7, but the Gateway Accessory Store phone
 operates

Gateway Accessory Store Order Assistance (for orders placed after
 5/1/2002): 877-285-6043 [Mon-Fri 5am-11pm (PST) and Sat-Sun 10am-6pm

If someone hasn't already done it by the time I'm up, I'll call them and see
if they can tell me what the deal will be with their being out of stock, and
the date for qualifying for the rebate coming in a few days. Though they
probably have no contol of it since it's Toshiba that's isueing the rebates.

This deal has already been running for a number of days. No doubt one or
more people have already ordered large lots that dried up their suppies.

However I think it was Gateway I ordered some 110 memory from when they were
out of stock, and they were restocked and shipping in a couple of days.

Why would there be a problem in getting the rebate? The 15th is 4 working
days away ... or does it need to be posted in? (I can't get to the site at
the moment due to my net connection going weird ...)

It needs to be purchased before the 16th for the rebate offer to hold.
I have heard of companies offering things like rebates then never
honoring them and since this purchase could run into the thousands at
112.95 a card I would like some sort of guarentee from toshiba. If
they honor everything is cool and the extra cards can be sold on ebay
easily. I wonder how many Gateway has in stock?

Depending on how much extra would be involved for shipping/handling, $24USD
 sounds reasonable to me ...

Is 24 dollars US a card too much? I might be able to put together
about 5 grand for buying a bunch of cards. It wouldn't be my money so
they'd need a decent profit. There's no guarentee Toshiba will pay the
rebate, though. It has to be done before the 15th. Money could be

Hi everyone,

The JVC certainly is a fast machine, you can feel that Pentium III power.

Incidentally, I'm not sure if the homepage is clear (mine and JVC's) but
all batteries can be removed, so if you ever need to replace the tiny
base battery - you can.

The keyboard is just a tad smaller than the Libretto. The screen is too,
but it's best to check the pictures.

I hang my head in abject shame. Mea culpa!

Brett - have you had a play yet and, if so, what do you think? The
battery system intrigues me. The choice of minimum size or maximum
battery life seems like a really good idea.

BTW Brett, just checked your site and the pictures of the U1 vs L5
and the MPXP are suberb. That Sony is *small!*, the MPXP seems about
right and the L5 looks decidedly big! Eek!

If you've not yet seen the pics, go and look at Brett's site.

 Nick.

The entire bottom of the PC seems to be a heat-sink, and it's full of holes as

-Yet, it's very quiet, and has average heat for a mobile Pentium 3.

It really is a tight package, the only thing it lacks is WiFi - but slap in
a Sony ultra slim (5mm sticking out!) WiFi card and it's complete.

that with all the cooling that thing must have (I assume it'll have vents

I too can't imagine why Toshiba isn't making a Libretto this small any
more, the market is huge!
(instead they only make the half B5 Libretto Lx). Following the success of
the Sony U, maybe there will be a smaller Toshiba out soon.

I got my Libretto and cannot believe how useful it is. I begin to

product ahead of its time? Palm is different, but WinCe machines should
have no chance against a new Libretto provided that they are in the
 same price range.

From the experience with older Librettos I think that there is a software
utility which controls brightness. The problem is that L1 is a Japan only
model, and English version of the utility may not exist. Try downloading
similar utilities for other Toshibas. One of them might work. Usually two
programs are needed: ACPI common modules and Toshiba Power Saver.

The wireless option is not really worth it (unless you plan to use it

Actually, it depends on the keyboard. I do recall on a Japanese Thinkpad
240 there were a few more keys than that (for instance the left shift key
was a single square because they squeezed an extra key in there, the upper
row of numbers actually lined up with the row below because there wasn't
enough room to displace them to the left and so on) ... I could imagine
some scancodes would be quite different to a 'normal' keyboard (besides
which that keyboard on that website isn't even 'normal' anyway, the other
markings are British! Just look at the above the 2 key!) ;-)

Having said that all you'd need to do is reprogram that lookup table and
you'll be fine ... plus you'll have some extra keys to do other things with!

I never use smartdrive, seems fast enough without it.

Without smartdrive you will start setup one day and finish next!

If you're talking literally, then there must be some other factors.
I pre-copied i386 over to the new HDD in a desktop, then ran WINNT.EXE
on my L110 (64MB, 30GB) without doing the smartdrive thing, and I was
very surprised how quick it was.

I never thought to note the exact times involved so I can't report precisely
how long it actually takes if you proceed immediately at every step, but it
wasn't more than a couple of hours from start to finish even though I kept
wandering away and doing other things and returning later to find it waiting
 to continue.

You might try Atek. They make a truly small optical
mouse in both PS2 and USB versions. I have never used
one, but have seen it in the stores in the US. Very
small. I am sure there is a distributor that carries it
over there. Price is around $50 USD.

 Hi Brett

Are you actually reading the group or are you just spamming us?
Do you have the Vaio U1 in stock yet? There were questions
posted on this group about it like whether the hard drive is a
custom or whether generic ones will work. Do you have an answer?

Hi,

If anyone considers my posts to be SPAM please ask me how to setup your email reader /
service to filter my emails (you'll never get email from me again).
***
RE: Japanese warranty

I should be able to help anyone that requires a Japanese warranty return on goods or
repair out side of warranty term even on goods not sold by me.

(It's easier if the warranty card has not been used / damaged and if you can provide
your receipt OR the store stamp / stciker / info is on the warranty card).

Actual fees such as domestic Japanese postage and International post back to you and my
low fee can be arranged / discussed when the case arises.

(there is never any additional fee for this service if items were originally purchased
from me, only actual postal charges as stated on my website)

I'll provide more information about such a service in the coming days, Thank you for
your suggestion.

 Hello

It would be interesting to have a service that you could pay for
and get help delaing with Japanese warranty for people who travel
over there and purchase things. I know a few people that would be
interested in a service like that on as needed basis.
