I love my N900, i am not replacing it yet, as i see no candidate yet. however, The screen is too small for me. I am in the denial stage so i do not carry reading glasses with me yet. Other issues with the N900 - i am missing new simple applications like a good roadmap gps app, PTT app, and other, which i installed in my wife's android. i saw xmltvm and alian-dalvik which i thought would give me the option of running android apps on the N900 (or any other linux), i even gave a try of trying to help in development. but i guess it is too far from being workable so i would need to practically do most of it myself. and the N900 is getting older technology wise - no multitouch, small display, old processor, no hdmi etc... sooner or later i will probably use my n900 as a server for somtehing (DMZ server, webcam, etc...). and need to get something new so if not now, the same question will pop up later ... Re: next smartphone thoughts
Regarding fonts, see: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38541 Generally about the n900, I can only say me too. I love the phone and its posix/X11 environment, but I also realize that it is getting rusty. The two major things that are bothering me is that it is sometimes too busy swapping or whatever so that it cannot prioritize an incoming phone conversation, and I therefore miss the call. The second problem is the battery life that makes the battery go dead during a day if you do anything more advanced with it than you can do with a 150 NIS Nokia phone. I too, have no idea where to go next. My wife just got a Galaxy S2 which is beautiful as far as hardware is concerned (though it lacks a keyboard). I played with the android SDK, which I didn't like very much. I wish I could get a shell and an X-server on it! I thought about getting the N9 but of course it is a dead horse already before it left its tracks. Still, it might be the strongest hardware for free development in the foreseeable future. dc9723 September meeting
Hi All, A quick update on some of the issues raised during the last meeting: 1. As announced before - we now have an SVN open for DC9723 members that would like to manage projects privately. See the last email for more details. 2. Location, location, location. You raised the issue - we are trying to address it. We have a very generous offer from the friends at TechLoft to see how it works out if we host our meetings there. It's a combination of the vibe that we had at Empeeric, with the facilities that we currently get at StarTAU. The TechLoft is located at Nachmany street in Tel-Aviv, which offers much more in terms of socializing which we were gravely missing lately (and surprisingly - a parking lot on the same block). We will have the next meeting on a trial basis at the TechLoft so make sure you note the change! The address again is: Nachmany 14, 2nd floor. TechLoft. maphttp://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid=0x151d4b7d80ac2e15:0x4f80599fa654dc73q=nachmani+14,+Tel+Aviv,+Israelhl=ensll=32.06622,34.773831sspn=0.006295,0.006295ie=UTF8ll=32.071302,34.764218spn=0.18,0.21z=16vpsrc=0 This means that potentially we also have more interaction with startups and entrepreneurs as the TechLoft is a shared working space that hosts fresh companies and ideas. Lot's of room for interaction and possibly collaboration with these guys. In terms of content - we are looking at a single talk even this time, but what a talkā¦ We'll host Tetel (Amir Tetelbaum) who will give us an in-depth overview of Stuxnet like we haven't seen before. As always - looking forward to getting feedback on this new initiative - good and bad! Without it we wouldn't be where we are at right now (i.e. averaging over 70 members in each meeting!) See you all there on the 20th at 19:00! -- Regards, Amichay. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Web site developer, and an independent security researcher. Universal docking station and Linux
Hi, I want to buy a Universal docking station which should work with two (or more) laptops which both have dual-boot Linux/Windows on them. One is Lenovo, the other is Dell. I had found many such solutions; one which seems suitable and in reasonable price is: Level one UDS-1000 USB 2.0 Docking Station http://global.level1.com/product_d.php?id=316 which is available in some israeli online stores However, the official site says: Easy installation and compatible with Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP Version 2.0 compatible with Mac 10.3/10.4. It does not say anything about Linux. (what a shame!( So I have two questions: 1) Does anybody have any experience with universal docking station ? (I am not specifically talking about this model). I would appreciate if he/she can share his experience. 2) More specifically, I would appreciate if somebody can comment about his experience with Linux and universal docking station ? regards, DS ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

I just want to note that it also says that the current version is 3. Mac OS 10.3 was replaced by 10.4 around 5 years ago (the first Intel Macs where 10.4 and they came out in 2006) and MacOS is now at 10.7. Does that mean that Macs don't work anymore? It's really just a simple device, a set of USB port converters, a USB hub and a VGA passthru (interconnected VGA male and female connectors). It does not say anything about Linux. Since they don't say what chips are in the port convertors, you really can't make an educated guess. It's likely they are, but then it is also possible they are not. Or one port will not work. Since no one uses VGA anymore, except for netbooks, do you really need the passthrough? If your laptop has a DVI or HDMI connector, you probably won't use the VGA connector. Do you have any serial or parallel devices? Does your laptop not have an ethernet port? No Wifi? Do you need a PS/2 keyboard and mouse? Everyone I know uses USB. You might be better of with just a high quality self powered USB hub. Kensington makes a nice 7 port one, and BUG sells them for under 200 NIS. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
