[WSG] RE: digest for wsg@webstandardsgroup.org

2006-12-20 Thread lari
Hi

Your problem has two sides:

1. database side

* you can use mySQL or postgreSQL (more flexible, it is my point of
view ) ) with utf8 (for europena language, not assian it is more than
enough)

* build a language table (usefull if you wish to add in future other
language)

* every single other tables which contain text/link/name… which need
to be stored in more language should be linked (secKey) by language table.
Do not create multiple fields for each language.

Each content should be on 2 rows in your case, one for En and one for Fr.

2. application side

* you can use JavaScript / Jscript (client side)

* create a class (my_lng.class) in php or asp for example and any
time, in a specific page you need some contents from a “Multilanguage
content table” get data from that table and store in JS array.

You can extract and display straight (no script) but in that case you must
reload pages or use HTMLRequest.

Note : For messages, I mean all appear on screen you need anyway a language
txt file for each language.

What you want to do is not simple at all. I have implemented this system
for many sites, one of them with millions of records and hundreds of tables
(I worked in Europe for a while).

I prefer to define all by database, with UTF-8 support (using Mysql db).
This will guarantee also support for different languages and charset like
japanese, arabic, etc.

For fixed strings I prefer also to use XML. You can see an example in

[WSG] Multi language web sites

Hello,

I had a question about creating multi-language web sites and best practices.
Is it better to create two separate directories with the pages and images
duplicated for each language, or is it best to try a database solution using
meta tags that will be replaced on the server depending on the language
selected? Maybe there is another approach all together?

I would think the database solution would be more flexible but could get out
of hand quickly just with the number of meta tags required. The web site I
am concerned about has to support 2 languages only (French/English).

Any comments are appreciated.

Kepler Gelotte

I suspect that in essence we're agreeing, Barney, but I would point
out that sure, you might remember what hack was implemented for a
particular problem now - but what about in two years time or when
you're working with someone else's code? If I had the choice of a hack
or a more verbose but blatently obvious conditional comment, I'll take
the comment every time.

That way you don't have to worry about IE 8 :)

This is precisely the problem with conditional comments: You don't know

which conditional you will need.

If you get it wrong, and the bug fix is still needed in IE8 (or is not

future-proof your code any more than a well chosen CSS hack will, and
you will have many more pages to fix.

Nowadays I just use a separate stylesheet for IE6 and IE7 and use
conditional comments.
You can tweak and fix problems in both browsers and compliant browsers
never get to see that code.
No more hacks necessary!
This goes into my html:

!--[if gt IE 6]
link rel=stylesheet href=ie7.css media=screen
![endif]--
!--[if lte IE 6]
link rel=stylesheet href=ie6.css media=screen

totally unavoidable use external style sheets and call using I.E.

It's a hack, so no.

 style
 .foo { background:red;width:100px;height:100px; }
 .ie-only.foo { background:blue; }

It works in IE 6 and IE 7.

If by it works you mean that IE 6 and 7 get a red background while
other browsers get a blue background, then you'd be right.

Internet Explorer doesn't support combinations of multiple class
selectors.

Will Microsoft support this in next versions of IE?

Support the hack? No, if the hack continues to work it will be because
they haven't gotten around to fixing the bug. They support conditional
comments (which, since they don't depend on bugs or lack of support in
CSS parsers, are rather more dependable).

Support combinations of multiple class selectors? I hope so.

Subject: Re: [WSG] ie-only hack

Cool hack, Rafael

I love the way people live in constant fear of Microsoft fixing bugs.
And when their developers eventually do sit down to tackle IE's problems
and release an update, they're not going to tackle any of the crippling
rendering problems and will instead devote their time to removing all
the life-saving compiling methods.

Based on personal experience, I find no real cause for worry.

An .ie-only selector is a fantastic little creature that I hadn't seen
before. It has the advantage of being semantic - people will look at
your code and know what's going on.

My alternative is ending your selector with a comma , which causes
everything apart from IE to ignore the rule. I'd say that in this case
IE performs logically, but (especially if you don't know about it) it's
easily missed and can easily confuse my target audience (other designers
reading through my CSS code).

But whereas the star hack * html relies on a bug which remains (it is
often used to compensate for behaviour that IE7 has mostly fixed, so I
hardly think the sites that rely on it are turning in their graves), I
think the two hacks above are not exploiting bugs (I can't imagine
.ie-only being a mistake, somehow).

Barney

I am trying to do a fixed layout for a site and no matter what I do I

I am attempting to use css to act like a frame - wherein all content

Now this is working perfect in FF - but for the life of me IE will not
display proper.

You can see the action here :

Mind you this is only a mock up - so the header and such are not

would like to fix this issue.

Can someone please give me a hand. I am about to say to heck with it -
but this client defintely wants this look :(

[WSG] RE: digest for wsg@webstandardsgroup.org

2006-05-02 Thread TomG
Title: Message

Well I believe
you told them margin of 0 with the HTML * (if you take it out temporarily
you see space appear between the paragraphs)and there's padding on the
content p but again no margin set, and the padding is left and right only. I'm
fairly certain HTML * says "all elements."

FWIW,

TG

  Hi,

  I've
a little stumped why the (2) p elements are behaving as if inline,
meaning no line break between the (2) elements in the UA.

WEB STANDARDS GROUP MAIL LIST DIGEST

If you have suddenly been thrown into digest mode and don't know why,
it's because your address was bouncing for at least 5 posts.

To revert to a standard subscription, please log into the website -
http://webstandardsgroup.org/manage/ - and select Edit your login
details and mail list subscriptions from the members home page and
change the selection toFull WSG list. You can change your subscription
at any time and you can now select a different email address for WSG and
WSGCMS list posts. You can also suspend email from these lists.

You can reach Russ and Peter the list managers at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more
specific than WSG Digest

There are some problems with the Digest version. Our apologies for this.
It is the way that SmarterMail handles it so that HTML email and
attachments are not put into the digest as source code. We are STILL
talking with the software developers about this.

[WSG] RE: digest for wsg@webstandardsgroup.org

2006-04-22 Thread Simon Clegg

My suggestion would be to look at school websites. Here
in the UK at least there is an epademic of extremely poorly designed school
websites. You could take your pick from several thousand that can all be
accessed from: http://www.schoolswebdirectory.co.uk

Good luck.

Simon

ran a sample of 250 pages in TAW and only gota couple of
