Re: [WSG] getting an a - document trees
An elegantly worded sentence on document trees: http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/conform.html#doctree Or, for those who struggled with the concept of document trees (or any plant matter) there is a simpler explanation here: http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_tree.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_ancestor.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_descendant.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_parent.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_child.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_sibling.htm http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/document_multiple.htm Bowing Humbly To The Master Dunno who this was aimed at but I ain't no master. Re: [WSG] Web Standards Speech
The last thing is that this is the first time I give a speech, so maybe someone with a little more experience in this matter could point me some subjects I should/should not talk about. Not sure if this is heading way ff topic. If so, I'll write to myself offlist and give myself a stern talking to... I try to avoid any reference to: 1. The XHTML vs HTML debate (often ends up in fist fights) 2. Alien abductions (seems to reduce credibility to some degree) 3. American presidents past or present (or any President/Prime minister for that matter) A few tips I always try to keep in mind: 1. always wear cloths when public speaking 2. face the audience when talking to them (for some reason this can engage them???) 3. if your audience falls asleep, throw things at them The best pointers are probably Jeff Veens: http://www.veen.com/jeff/archives/000483.html And Dave Shea's http://mezzoblue.com/archives/2006/02/27/speaking_ti/ A fantastic blog on presenting and presentations: http://presentationzen.blogs.com/presentationzen/ Good luck with your talk! The former company, Alfresco Design has recently been sold to WDG The largest web design company in Australia and as such we are looking at expanding our team in the Brisbane office. The applicant should have a particular interest in web standards / useability / accessibility and enjoy finding innovative ways to implement these in creative systems. The role would incorporate more interaction design rather than interface design (directly) and focus on the management of Presentation / Behaviour and developing best standards and re-usable components for these. Additional knowledge and expertise in Flash would be a huge bonus and there is a possibility if you do know flash that you would be doing a fair workload of it. Re: [WSG] Pixel to Em conversion.
Actually, you wouldn't. You'd have the *table* set to 100%, and the left column to 220px. Surely you'd just insert the concept design as one big img and ensure the alt was sufficiently descriptive...? Obviously you guys are not up on the latest... Spacer gifs. You can add them into each table cell and force the cell to any width. I'm thinking of writing a tutorial on it... russ ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
Re: [WSG] Pixel to Em conversion - understanding IRONY
OK, I'm getting a little worried here. Some of the recent posts have used a relatively new concept called irony. For those who haven't heard of this, here is a brief description: Irony is a form of speech in which the real meaning is concealed or contradicted by the words used. Irony involves the perception that things are not what they are said to be or what they seem. So, when people are posting messages about using large images with alt attributes, spacer gifs etc, you can rest assured that they are using this new fangled irony thing. Feel free to try it out on your friends... Lots of fun. [WSG] Last Call Working Draft of Web Content - Accessibility Guidelines 2.0
A notice from WCAG Working Group - CALL FOR COMMENTS A Last Call Working Draft of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) as well as two supporting documents were published 27 April 2006. W3C strongly encourages broad community review of this Last Call Working Draft, and submission of comments on any issues which you feel could present a significant barrier to future adoption and implementation of WCAG 2.0. (Note that only the WCAG 2.0 is in Last Call and only the WCAG 2.0 will become a Recommendation. Understanding WCAG 2.0 and Techniques for WCAG 2.0 are being developed to support WCAG 2.0, and will be released as Working Group Notes when WCAG 2.0 becomes a Recommendation.) In particular, we encourage you to comment on the conformance model and success criteria. Reviewers are encouraged to provide suggestions for how to address issues as well as positive feedback, and commitments to implement the guidelines. This message contains information on the documents and how to comment. Comments should be received on or before 31 May 2006. Comments should be made in one of four formats: * online form, * downloadable excel form, * downloadable html form, or * downloadable text form. Instructions and downloadable files for all are available at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG20/comments/ WCAG 2.0 addresses accessibility of Web content for people with disabilities. It will apply to a wider range of Web technologies than WCAG 1.0, and is intended to be understandable to a wider audience. Note: Until WCAG 2.0 becomes a W3C Recommendation, WCAG 1.0 will continue to be the current and stable document to use. Most Web sites that conform to WCAG 1.0 should not require significant changes in order to conform to WCAG 2.0, and may not need any changes. This 27 April 2006 release of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 is a Last Call Working Draft by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group (part of the Web Accessibility Initiative). Publication as a Last Call Working Draft indicates that the WCAG WG believes it has addressed all substantive issues and that the document is stable (see below for more information on subsequent stages). The first public Working Draft of WCAG 2.0 was published 25 January 2001. Since then, the WCAG WG has published nine Working Drafts, addressed more than 1,000 issues, and developed a variety of supporting resources for the guidelines. A good place to start a review of WCAG 2.0 is with the Overview of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Documents. The Overview explains the relationships between WCAG 2.0 and the supporting documents, and links to the current version of each document. The Overview is available at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/wcag20 The documents published on 27 April 2006: - Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-WCAG20-20060427/ - Understanding WCAG 2.0 http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20-20060427/ - Techniques for WCAG 2.0 http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-WCAG20-TECHS-20060427/ The WCAG WG believes that after Last Call, WCAG 2.0 will be ready to move on to the remaining stages of the W3C Recommendation Track Process: * Candidate Recommendation - when the WCAG WG will collect implementation experience on use of WCAG 2.0 to design and evaluate Web content for accessibility; * Proposed Recommendation - when W3C will seek endorsement of the specification from W3C Member organizations; * Recommendation - when WCAG 2.0 will be published by W3C as a technical report appropriate for widespread deployment and the promotion of W3C's mission. Note that the WCAG WG will start collecting implementation examples early in the Last Call review period. Please visit the WAI home page for more information. http://www.w3.org/WAI/ Additional information about the WCAG WG is available at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/ A list of changes to WCAG 2.0 since the previous draft is available at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/WCAG20/change-history.html ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

Re: [WSG] Inline Lists
This is probably something really simple I am overlooking. A demonstration of my problem is at http://www.pacetools.com/temptest.html I just need to get rid of the extra padding on the left of the initial li. I've surrounded everything in borders for your convenience. Any ideas? The incorrect spelling of padding within your ul rule is your problem. Re: [WSG] Screen Readers, abbr and code
So. Use abbr? Or, use code? From what I could tell, your content looks like sample code, and only needs a code element. However, in case I am missing something (quite common for me), here is an overall approach... STEP 1 The first aim is to ignore devices and mark up content based on its meaning. This means using the most appropriate element for the purpose. If the content is a code sample, then it should be marked up with the code element. If it is an abbreviation of some sort then it should be marked up with the appropriate abbreviation element [1]. Abbreviation: abbr title=associationassoc./abbr Initialism: abbr title=Cascading Style SheetsCSS/abbr Acronym: acronym title=Radio Detecting And Rangingradar/acronym STEP 2 Once you have decided the basic markup, you can then deal with devices and how they interpret markup. If they do not interpret the markup as intended you can choose to apply work-arounds if needed. For example, as mentioned by Pat, Internet Explorer 5 and 6 for Windows do not support the abbr element. Some authors choose to wrap a span inside the element so that their styles will be applied in these browsers [2]. Another example of poor device support is that many screen readers do not support the title attribute [3], so the titles within abbreviations and acronyms are often ignored by screen readers. Some authors use a workaround when writing initialisms. So, CSS could be written as C.S.S. to make sure that the content is not read out as a single, unintelligible word. Not sure that helps... Russ [1] http://www.maxdesign.com.au/presentation/abbreviations/ [2] http://www.sovavsiti.cz/css/abbr.html [3] http://www.sf.id.au/ozewai/ ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
Re: [WSG] Screen Readers, abbr and code
Heck, theres probably an argument for saying use an em, as you are just trying to emphasize certain bits! I'd probably use that option too - or strong. Then CSS can be used to style the highlights as needed using a descendant selector. code strong { color: red; } or code em { color: blue; } Russ ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

Re: [WSG] Navs at bottom of pages
The use of broken pipes was mostly used (in my opinion, but then I'm an accessibility specialist ;) to address the Level AAA Checkpoint 10.5: Until user agents (including assistive technologies) render adjacent links distinctly, include non-link, printable characters (surrounded by spaces) between adjacent links. The better solution is to mark them up as a list of links (as they are still a list even if presented horizontally) and then use css to create the horizontal appearance (setting the li to display: inline is one method) and the illusion of pipes (applying a border ro one edge of the li or a elements). You could even add a structural label above them to give them meaning :) http://www.maxdesign.com.au/2006/01/17/about-structural-labels/ Russ *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Re: [WSG] Rollover Problems [was:messed up]
I would have done the rollovers like this: http://www.thevisualprocess.com/dev/rollover/ A good one. It may be worthwhile adding a declaration inside one rule set so that text doesn't poke out under the image when font size is increased. This can be fixed by adding something like overflow: hidden; inside the following rule set: ul#nav li a { display: block; position: relative; width: 100px; height: 25px; background-color: #eee; overflow: hidden; } Also (being incredibly nit picky - which seems to be a trend on the list tonight) the page you pointed us to has a title of Untitled Document as opposed to the far sexier Ryan Rollovers. :) Russ *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

[WSG] ADMIN - hijacking and trimming
Two quick ADMIN notes to all... Problem: thread hijacking thread hijacking is a term used when someone replies to a thread but introduces a totally different topic. Solution: If you have a fresh topic or question you want to post, please post it with its own topic. This benefits everyone, including the poster. Problem: untrimmed posts People sometimes reply to a post and include the entire previous post. This can make it much harder for people to read quickly through posts - especially those who are in digest mode. Solution: trim all unnecessary information before posting back to the list. Re: [WSG] Articles/reasearch/experience of screen readers
http://www.usability.com.au/resources/ozewai2005/ I wonder whether any of the conclusions that were drawn in the study, are still valid, or whether there has been further research to either supplement or contradict it? Specifically, one observation, The majority of screen reader users EXPECT navigation to be presented before the content. [1], and the subsequent statement Our research showed no clear overall PREFERENCE of source order [2], seem to lead me to believe that there is no real reason to attempt to have layouts with the source order first. Rather than attempting to put content first (which seems to confuse inexperienced screen reader users [3]), I would be attempting to put structural labels, as suggested in [4]. I'd be interested to hearing from people with actual experience, and or research, since all my conclusions are arrived at second-hand. Hi Rahul, The full article to support the presentation you have linked to is here: http://www.usability.com.au/resources/source-order.cfm While no further research has been undertaken by Roger, Lisa or I in this specific area, we are still working with blind users regularly. In fact, I have been sitting watching blind users today. What struck us during testing last year, and has been confirmed on many occasions since, is that: 1. Source order is often irrelevant as most screen reader users and refreshable Braille device users [1] have a variety of ways that they can move around pages quickly (skipping to heading levels, links, forms, form elements, as well as tabbing quickly through content and doing direct searches for content on the page). The concept of top and bottom of pages often becomes irrelevant. 2. Well structured content is a VERY important aid for blind users as it allows them to use their preferred method of moving around the page. Poorly structured pages often do not allow this to occur. 3. Assistive markup in forms and tables is also vital. The testing carried out today confirmed this with blind users having a great deal of trouble filling in forms due to poorly labelled input elements (or in some cases no labelling at all). 4. Structural labels are not critical but are quite helpful as they flag sections of the page. They act almost like street signs, allowing people to know where they are within the pages content. One quick test for all of this is simply to turn off all styles and read the content of your (unstyled) page. Does it make sense to you? Is the content running together? Are headings helping to break the content into meaningful chunks? The second quick test is to then tab around the page with the keyboard only and see how hard it all is to use. :) HTH Russ [1] http://www.flickr.com/photos/russweakley/58957885/ *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Re: [WSG] Using list items for horizontal navigation
However, I have a couple questions. One of the challenges of the conversion was getting each link to act like its own cell/box so it would change background colour but stay within the top and bottom border of the navigation bar. Unlike a table cell, the list items don't stay contained within their box so easily. To solve this I set the line height of the navigation bar as follows: Hi Stephen, Here [1] is an explanation of why the padding on your list items is operating in a slightly odd way. When you change the li or the a within the li to display: block and then float it, your problems should disappear. Re: [WSG] Using list items for horizontal navigation
The surrounding div of the navigation links (with a background colour) is not stretching around the floated link elements, so my nice visual effect of the background colour (which also has a bottom border another colour) is not being seen. Any suggestions for the best way to do that? The reason your surrounding (or parent) container is not stretching around the floated links is because parent containers will only wrap around content that is in normal flow. As soon as you float an item inside the parent container, the floated item moves out of normal flow and the parent container cannot detect its height, and therefore cannot wrap around it. This is explained here: http://www.maxdesign.com.au/presentation/floatsample/ I generally prefer to float the parent container as well... rather than adding a clearing element inside the parent. As soon as the parent is floated, it can determine the heights of any floated items inside it and will wrap around them. Re: [WSG] Fieldset but no legend
[...] doesn't seem to allow legends to be positioned off screen [...] Whoops, I did not know this. Sorry. That's the truth! I use them but I do allow for some cross-browser variances. They aren't a mandatory element, but they *can* be helpful, especially for complex forms. I think a heading would work just fine for a wrapping fieldset in lieu of a main legend. The legend can be positioned in Firefox by wrapping the content inside the legend in a span and styling this. Not ideal (additional unnecessary markup), but a quick and easy solution. legendspanLogin details/span/legend Once this is done, you can move it off screen easily or set the span to display: block and you have much more control over positioning. In regard to the use of html elements such as headings instead of legends, keep in mind that legends have additional semantic meaning for devices such as screen readers. The legend is sometimes read out in association with form elements. Headings, on the other hand, are not tied to form elements in the same way and are even ignored by certain assistive devices when they move into forms mode. [WSG Announce] World Wide Web-a-thon - an international competition with two teams building a website in a day
** This is a one-way list for WSG Announcements ** Hi all, A message from Mike Brown, Web Standards Group core member and Webstock organiser. For those that missed the announcement in Wellington last week... Webstock www.webstock.org.nz and WIPA www.wipa.org.au are more than pleased - in fact hugely excited - to announce World Wide Web-a-thon, the start of an international series of web competitions. Yes, geek Olympics is happening! The concept is simple. A team of the representatives from two countries take each other on, at the same location, to build a complete website in 24 hours. No excuses, no extensions and no overrun budgets. What sort of website will the teams be building? Webstock and WIPA will be approaching a range of charity organisations to see who is interested in coming on board. The aim is to hand over a fully functional website to a Charity organisation at the end of the 24 hour period. Each country selects a team, with people filling the following positions: - Project manager - Information architect - Graphic designer - HTML/CSS marker-upper - Programmer - Usability purveyor - Captain's choice (can be from any speciality) Neither of the teams will know who they'll be building the website for until a briefing session at the beginning of the 24 hour period. They'll be given content, images and the chance to receive a brief from a representative of the chosen charity. They'll have complete freedom as to the platform and setup they use - Ruby on Rails, Windows or LAMP, it's all part of the fun. At the end of 24 hours, a team of judges will review both sites and select the winner. International pride, bragging rights and a trophy will follow for the winning team. So when does it start? June 2008 will see the inaugural competition - a trans-Tasman grudge match between Australia and New Zealand to be held in Australia. This event will include live blogging as well as Twitter and YouTube action throughout the 24 hour period. For those who cannot participate, you will still be able to see the entire event taking place online. Webstock 2008 (Wellington, New Zealand in February 2008) will see the geek Olympics really take off with international teams from as many countries as can make it. It will be 24 hours of international competition followed by a week of the best web event held in New Zealand! There's a lot more details to work through but we think it's such a good idea we want to get everyone else as excited as we are. Are you interested in being a representative for your country? Are you interested in organising a team for your country? To let us know, and for more information please contact: Mike Brown (Webstock) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Russ Weakley (WIPA) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you, Mike Brown ** Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] **
[WSG Announce] World Wide Web-a-thon - hopefully not that long to wait :)
** This is a one-way list for WSG Announcements ** As many people have already pointed out, there was a date error in the last announce email... So when does it start? June 2008 will see the inaugural competition - a trans-Tasman grudge match between Australia and New Zealand to be held in Australia. That should, of course, be June 2007 :) Thanks Russ ** Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] **

As you can see, each item needs to be kept distinct from each other, so a single container is not enough. A suitable micro-format would be great, but the point is that regardless of what non-sighted users require, a visual user requires a visual distinction. Clearly each item is of fairly equal importance, so neither em or strong is appropriate, semantically speaking. Re: [WSG] Styling thumbnails and captions
Hey Thierry, Looks good! One question that people may ask you is how would this system work with different sized images or different length captions. The entire layout could fall to pieces if one caption in the middle of the page is much longer. The following floats may be caught by this long caption and sit beside it, rather than returning neatly below all previous images. I know people will ask this as I get that criticism all the time for this example :) http://www.maxdesign.com.au/presentation/definition/dl-image-gallery.htm The other comment people may make is if this is generated from a CMS I may not have the ability to add line breaks inside captions as per your example. Anyway, these are not major issues and can easily be overcome! :) Thanks for sharing the article! Joining events in London[1] and San Francisco[2], the web standards focussed @media 2007 Asia[3] will be the first event of its kind to be held in the continent, and aims to make money for charity by donating all of its profits to Oxfam Hong Kong[4] and WWF China[5]. Taking place in Hong Kong on 31st May and 1st June, speakers including Andy Budd, Molly Holzschlag, Jeremy Keith, and Dave Shea will help to raise the awareness and teach the application of best practices in modern web design in an area of the world that is slightly behind the likes of North America and Europe in its community participation and adoption of web standards. As well as attracting attendees, to encourage participation a Call For Papers[6] hopes to attract up and coming best practice designers and developers from the area to take part. Specially reduced price tickets are available until Tuesday February 27th, as are discounts for students, and a referral program that will give away one free ticket for every five successful registrations referred.
