[Liverpool] Fwd: Donating to OpenEmbedded as a company

2023-03-12 Thread Alex J Lennon via Liverpool

Hi all,

I got this in which is really really interesting to me in terms of how
small business that uses OpenSource can pay something back.

The link to Marta's  FOSDEM talk is below which I greatly enjoyed. This
is something very close to my heart.

A topic for an upcoming LUG meeting perhaps?

Cheers,

Alex

Hello all,
I'm posting to this list, because more people might be interested. I'm
willing to make a donation from my company to OpenEmbedded (as a part of
an initiative I talk more at [1]). Companies need invoices or other
proofs for payments, as most of you know. I then contacted the SPI
treasurer to work out details. Nothing happened, same after a follow-up
message.

This is a pity, because a company cannot make a donation in such
situation. It is also pushing to become a member of YP instead, where 5k
is quite a large sum for a really small company. I would really prefer
to give to OE. Whom can work this out?

Kind regards,
Marta

[Liverpool] Wigan Beer Festival (Tomorrow!)

2023-03-02 Thread Alex J Lennon via Liverpool

Hi all,

We're thinking of a trip from Lime Street to Wigan Beer Festival if
anybody fancies it.

https://beerfestival.wigancamra.org.uk/

The Liverpool end are aiming to be at Lime Street for the 13:45 train to
get there.

Seimon tells us it officially finishes at 5pm (there's a Saturday as
well for those who fancy that).

Would be lovely to see you!

Cheers,

This month *Gary Wright* is going to be telling us about
encryption, hashes and security stuff. How does quantum
computing affect things for example. He's even provided me
with a talk outline which you can see on the blog if you want

As usual the directions to DOES Liverpool are linked in the

We meet from 7pm but people tend to arrive in their own time
and the talk definitely won't start until 7:30pm earliest.
Just so you know.

Thinking about our Yulelug (?) on Wednesday. Are there any
geek type Christmas films out there? Sci-fi Christmas
films? Ok, ok - we can always fall back on Die Hard if
nothing else works :-) Was thinking it would be nice to
have some Christmas themed films running on a laptop/small
screen in a corner - maybe muted - just to create some
atmosphere? Any thoughts?

Network :) Logan’s Run Zardoz Johnny mnemonic Max Headroom …

Thank you for those Alex. I don't have any of them on disc - but I'll
bring a laptop and some DVD's - or we might be able to improvise
something with one of the streaming platforms.

This is kind of interesting. It shows that I have a bunch of gaps to
fill in my general knowledge when it comes to wireless networking :-)
When I asked on the list about mesh networking, I was referring to
802.11 based mesh networks - the sort of high-throughput links which
would be useful for general computing tasks (i.e. browsing the
Internet). On the other hand, the low power, low data rate and
possibly long distance mesh networking used with IoT devices is also
an interesting topic, come to think of it - so I'm looking forward to
any opportunity to learn about it as well :-)

Awesome - exactly! And I have gaps on what you're talking about because
when I talk about mesh in my head I am usually thinking about low
bandwidth and switches and sensor readings and suchlike :)

Something else playing in here that I know little about is 5G and where
NB-IoT fits in at the low bandwidth end of that specification and what
fits at the high bandwidth / low latency end.

I have been talking to people about the 5G future in which we deploy
containers into data-cubes based at the edge of the 5G network into the
cell hardware itself. Would love to understand this in more depth.

Was vaguely wondering if I could get somebody in for IoT Liverpool when
that restarts. Maybe we could consider some kind of joint event?

Lots to talk about it seems!

Alex

[Liverpool] [DoES Liverpool] Embedded Linux Conference 2017 (ELC-E) in Prague

2017-08-23 Thread Alex J Lennon via Liverpool
Hi all,

[Apologies if you are a victim of my cross-posting against the DoES list]

I'm going to ELC-E again. This year it's in Prague on 23rd - 26th October.

Schedule:

http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/embedded-linux-conference-europe/program/schedule

(Hobbyist codes are available for individuals active in the opensource
community, which reduce the ticket cost to $200)

I always find ELC-E a valuable experience and try to get along every
couple of years to see what's happening in the embedded Linux community.

Flights are available with Ryanair out of Liverpool.

Does anybody fancy joining me?

Again though Neil, I think you sent two emails relating to my query

due to my email client on my Samsung phone.

Email in a box seems to be a very basic generic system intended to be
installed onto a server Farm rented server. Doing that seems reduce
the problems of being blacklisted due to being on a home ip address.
Email in a box when installed, hijacks the entire pc and it seems
locks it down so it is the only service on that pc.

Email in a box own docs suggests that there are other more
sophisticated projects that could be tried, iRedMail being one of them.

As someone entirely new to this idea of "re decentralisation" of
Internet services I'm intrigued, bewildered yet keen to learn how to

Speaking as somebody who has run his own email, web. and other servers
