Re: cdrdao extremely slow

2015-12-20 Thread Henk Terhell

Op 2015-12-19 om 02:09 schreef Basil Fernie:
Yes, I know what you mean about KDE. A few years back, I was trying to
settle on just one 'Buntu and scrapped KDE for that very reason. Chose
Lubuntu and had fun planting LXDE on various unlikely candidates
including Edubuntu. Stayed largely with Lubuntu since then, although
delving into !#, pure Debian, various Debian-based things (e.g. Mint)
and, BTW, using sundry Puppies quite a lot for system maintenance and
repair. Fouled up my MBR, it seems, with a recent trial installation
of PCLinuxOS (no LiveCD available). Took too much time to recover,
backups included. Won't go there again.

Found Lubuntu releases tend to be a bit rough around the edges in
their earlier versions and decided to have an "old faithful"
low-hassle working installation of LXLE 14.04 LTS while experimenting
with the newer and flashier releases on a few spare partitions I keep
available. For example, I have Lubuntu 15.10 and have used it with
much success, including running very much newer versions of Opera
(which I've used since OS/2 days) that have emerged recently, but not
transferring my core workload to it yet, which was wise because
something's gone wrong with the boot process of the 15.10
installation. Will have to strip and re-install, I guess.

Kept an eye on new emerging distros and am enormously impressed with
4MLinux, for very low resource consumption. Will have to spend a
morning getting HDU and USB bootables going. But what I think you may
find interesting is Q4OS, Debian-based but with a KDE3-forked user
interface called Trinity Desktop Environment. It is blisteringly fast
even though not RAM-based like the Puppies; and the general level of
QA is what I certainly had come to expect from the KDE camp. Yes, it
uses more RAM than Lubuntu in some scenarios, but not all that much -
and the results are impressive. Using version 1.4.4 I found a few
"incompletenesses" rather than outright errors on the margins of
development, and am looking forward to the release of version 2.0.x. I
like the target desktop experience which is Win2K, still to my mind
the best OS that M$ put out; but you can click it across to LXDE if
desired.

What I am looking for is a distro I can confidently install and
maintain on old skinny hardware owned by pensioners who want to avoid
the Win10 vortex but must escape from the XP bugtrap. Lubuntu ticks a
lot of boxes, but is rather "unfamiliar". Q4OS could be "it".

I looked at Kmail but that was one ugly swamp-monster! (Well, not
actually ugly, but it was like installing a whole new OS. ) Any
comments on Evolution? Is it still being maintained?

My comments on the disk-burners are in an e-mail to Fritz.

Regards,
Basil

The Trinity desktop didn't impress me much, especially the size and look
of the icons, but I found Q4OS (as almost pure Debian 8) a good base to
test LXQt. Also LXDE and XFCE can be easily installed on Q4OS. In my
opinion however Lubuntu is a more comfortable distro considering
software resources, whereas I can't believe LXDE takes a long learning
curve coming from XP.

Recent updates received had some impacts.
Here all my current partitions with Lubuntu on 2 PC's:

PC #1 - 32 bit:
- vivid vervet with LXQt was OK but crashed two days ago during
updating and is no longer bootable not even in recovery mode
- vivid vervet is OK. I tried now to install LXQt-metapackage but
without success due to unmet dependencies

- L14.04 LTS with LXQt is OK

PC #2 - 64 bit:
- vivid vervet AMD64 is OK
- vivid vervet AMD64 with LXQt is OK

As a follow-up I'm also not able to install LXQt-metapackage on Lubuntu
14.10 32 bit.
Therefore, I tried to install LXQt on Xubuntu 14.10 32 bit and this gave
no problems - I can switch between XFCE and LXQt upon login.

So this current problem is only related to LXQt in combination with
Lubuntu (32 bit).

I announced yesterday that milestone testing has begun for the Alpha 1
release of Lubuntu's Vivid Vervet 15.04. I had at least a couple tests
done (thank you everyone!) but they have all been invalidated due to
an error on the part of the release team.

That being said, I ask you all to help out and at least do one test
case. This can be completely done in a virtual machine like KVM,
VirtualBox, VMWare, etc., so you don't need to replace your system.
Best of all, assuming you have enough memory, you can let the process
run while you do other things with your regular system. The process is
simple:

1. go to the ISO tracker¹
2. click on the desired combination of architecture and type (e.g.
Lubuntu Desktop amd64)
3. click on one of the testcases
4. download the linked ISO
5. boot it up
6. perform the testcase
7. provide your results in the form at bottom

I'll try to see if I can't find some time to help out on i386 but I'm
not currently running amd64, so I would really appreciate it if folks
coule help out there.

For more information on what testing is and what the process is like,
see the wiki page². If need be, I'm always available for an email or
IRC.

Please spread the word on this so we can get this milestone release
out. Thank you!

Vivid Vervet+ LXQt (sound issues)

2014-11-17 Thread Henk Terhell
Have now newly installed on disk Lubuntu 15.04 daily build with LXQt.
This works fine so far, though there are of course still LXQt issues to
be solved and there are some double menu entries. An earlier
installation of L.14.10 with LXQt worked as well but LXQt failed after
trying to upgrade the Lubuntu version.
I always find a drawback after installing any Lubuntu version that audio
never works out-of-the box and I have to fiddle around with pavucontrol
to find my analog speakers. To be a more user-friendly distro, could
such audio control not be built in?

Hi,

In order to prepare the switch to Qt for Lubuntu, and to make LXQt
easier to test, I build an ISO with LXQt and some Lubuntu stuff, from
14.10 and the daily lubuntu-dev PPA (git snapshot of LXQt). You can
see the result on : http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/

Got it installed allright and working. The login screen is nice.
Trouble I've met so far is that (as always) I need to switch video
driver (not yet included in the menu) to nvidia because of screen freeze.

This is true. My old Acer laptop, that I use mainly for the beamer, can

I'm pleased to report that the final beta of Lubuntu 14.10 Utopic
Unicorn is released.

No reason for me now to retain 14.04 since 14.10 final beta proves to be
very stable and fast on my old PC (AMD 3400+).

14.10 is a pleasure to work with. Boot time is about the same as 14.04.

However, on 14.04 I have been trying out LXQt a bit. The options to
adjust settings of LXQt may not be complete in the current state.
E.g. the font size of the menu items in LXQt is far too small for
comfortable reading right now and I have not found a way to change this.

Makes me wish that there also comes a menu for LXQt as nice as Whisker.

Re: Lost my GUI in 14.10

2014-09-10 Thread Henk Terhell
Latest upgrade of both Lubuntu 14.10 and Xubuntu 14.10 (including
upgrade of lightdm) resulted in booting to the GUI. Also sound has
arrived in Xubuntu.

It looks like both are reaching a final stage for release.

That is quite a distinct experience compared to the trouble on this
Acer desktop with the 14.10 beta versions of both Lubuntu and Xubuntu.
I downloaded today the daily build of 7 september of Lubuntu 14.10

presumably working), I can select and run any application from the main

Nothing visible happens.

Also lack of the volume control applet icon on the taskbar so I have no
convenient means of muting sound. Certainly the sound is working, but
there is no control on the desktop. Task Manager advises pulseaudio
at work, also reveals
gvfs-afc-volume-monitor and gvfs-ufd-volume-monitor and
gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor are active, whatever they may be I don't
know how to control them or even if I should be able to.

And I have 817 uninstalled upgrades waiting for ...what? That number
has come down from over 830 after repeated apt-get update, apt-get
upgrade, apt-get autoremove sequences; it has stuck now stubbornly on
817. Seems to be blocked by a purported lack af sane-devices (but I
can scan without difficulty from my HP DeskJet F4180...)

Every now and then a System Upgrade advisory window opens - if I
click Run it frowns at me and says This program cannot do an
upgrade from Trusty to Precise. Which is understandable, but I
was rather hoping it wouls complete the upgrade from the older to the
newer.

Oh, and I have 2 instances of nmapplet-manager running after
boot, but this is a know and resolved issue.

All this in the wake of an attempted click-and-lean-back,
watch-the-terminal-messages-scrolling-past automated upgrade from
12.04.04 to 14.04.1 (I had decided to wait for the first point update
to be released, memories of Microsoft days, better safe than sorry
right?)

Earlier, though, while still purportedly runnining on 12.04.?, and
religiously using Update Manager to stay, well, up-to-date, I
wwould be instructed to insert my 14.04 CD (DVD) as some needed files
were on it. So I did, the ISO DVD with which I had done live boots
for version-testing, and concluded that I would wait for 14.04.1
before doing the system upgrade. Apparently UM couldn't penetrate the
.iso barrier (directory structure) to find the files it needed...
Which CD/DVD was it looking for, please advise? Surely this shouldn't
be a problem?

So while I would be delighted to help test L14.10, I'm not too
sanguine about committing time to a version which it doesn't seem
will be clear of the problems I already face, but will have the added
problem, I hear, that synaptiks won't be usable with it. Synaptiks
is the only reason I can type this e-mail on my laptop without going
crazy. This could be show-stopper stuff.

Currently I'm transferring workload bit-by-bit to a parallel
installation of LXDE 14.04.1 which of course depends heavily on
Lubuntu. It's not perfect, of course, but seems to be clear of most
of the hassles encountered here - so far.

Hi Henk,
My guess is that this is something to do with lightdm still, since
you
just got an upgrade for it.
That would be the place to start looking. You could search
Launchpad to
see if there is a bug related to this issue. If you cannot find any,
I'd suggest opening a bug for it. It may effect users of different
desktop environments as well, and then we can know that it is not a
Lubuntu specific issue. If it is specific to Lubuntu then it may be
related to the Lubuntu session file (sorry I can't remember
what it
is called at the moment). This is the Lubuntu specific 'startx'
command.
I am guessing you still cannot 'startx' and get X up.

You could also try downgrading lightdm, I suppose, but that can be
rather messy when you do things like that...

Another option would be to install something like Xubuntu in a
secondary
partition and see if you are effected with the same issue when you
update.

Hope this is fully fixed before release!

I am guessing you still cannot 'startx' and get X up.

You could also try downgrading lightdm, I suppose, but that can be

Another option would be to install something like Xubuntu in a
secondary

update.

Hope this is fully fixed before release!

2014-09-05 Thread Henk Terhell

Thanks Israel

I had filed a bug report #1363919 in the nvidia drivers section some
days ago as I couldn't find a related report.
The screen dump of startx is different as before. It now only shows a
non-fatal error about XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (Type ONE_Level has 1
levels but RALT has 2 symbols).

A good idea to install Xubuntu 14.10 alongside. I'll let you know.

Re: Lost my GUI in 14.10

2014-09-05 Thread Henk Terhell
Strange enough Xubuntu 14.10 on the same PC doesn't start in GUI but
hangs after every boot at the terminal. After login and StartX the
desktop appears.
Both nouveau and NVDIA 304.123 video drivers do work well in Xubuntu
14.10 without any screen freezes so far . So there is difference with
Lubuntu 14.10.

In Lubuntu 14.10, sound handling is much improved and worked for me
out-of-the-box.
In Xubuntu 14.10 I haven't yet figured out how to get sound as
Pulseaudio cannot find there my built-in monitor speakers.

Hi Henk,
That is truly an odd error to have.. it is almost as if no display
manager is installed.
Can you double check to make sure you have a display manager
installed?

Simply,
sudo apt-get install ligthdm
Should be enough to get an idea.
Usually the display manager takes care of hooking the tty to X.
This is just my first guess here...

Hi Henk,
That is truly an odd error to have.. it is almost as if no display
manager is installed.

Can you double check to make sure you have a display manager installed?
Simply,
sudo apt-get install ligthdm
Should be enough to get an idea.
Usually the display manager takes care of hooking the tty to X.
This is just my first guess here...

Lost my GUI in 14.10

2014-08-29 Thread Henk Terhell
Lubuntu 14.10 alpha (i386) worked so far OK on my PC (except for psensor
for which a patch is underway). However, with the update of 14.10 today
to beta I can no longer get the desktop interface and am left at the
terminal. Startx gives error messages. Perhaps I should reinstall?

Re: Lost my GUI in 14.10

2014-08-29 Thread Henk Terhell

Hi Israel

the output is: lightdm is already the newest version
(no upgrade or install done)

I recall that I had to install all versions of lubuntu on this PC (with
Geforce 6100/nForce 405 graphic card) with nomodeset and installed the
nvdia driver 304 thereafter, because of immediate screen freezes without
nomodeset. Perhaps there is a link to my problem of the latest update
of 14.10.

Re: Fwd: software center in 14.10

2014-08-06 Thread Henk Terhell
Reinstalling from the ISO of yesterday's daily build of 14.10 solved my
problem of the Lubuntu Software Center. All software is now shown there.

After switching to the right NVDIA driver 14.10 works well sofar except
that Light Locker (inconsistently called Screen Locker in LXSession
Autostart) remains active even when the slider button shows it is
switched off.

So I have to unlock each time the screen saver is activated.

Re: media player

2014-04-20 Thread Henk Terhell

Thanks again, Israel, for your input.
I haven't reinstalled the 32-bit version of VLC but I read an
instruction for commands to solve this on a page of thinkpenquin.com:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/playing-digitally-restricted-dvds-gnulinux
I have no idea what these commands are doing, but it solved my problem:
all DVD's so far are now accepted by VLC as in Mint 16!
I didn't change the region code of the player. For some reason this
command was refused, but who cares.

For several reasons, I like to stay with Lubuntu 14.04 rather than use
Mint 16/LXDE.

Israel schreef op 20-4-2014 02:59:

If I remember correctly there is a setting in VLC for changing the
region. But I can't remember where you can change it. I wonder why
64bit has this problem, though. It may require something that is not
pulled in in the 64bit version. You can install the 32bit version of
VLC in lubuntu by choosing the :i386 version of the package.
You might test that to see if it works as well... That is an odd bug

Sorry you encountered the issue. Unfortunately I do not know how
to answer this, though a bug report might help the developers. It
may be unrelated to Lubuntu specifically, and be more related to
your wireless card.
Now I understand it was related to the missing nm-applet, so no
further action is needed.
There is a problem with media playing in 14.04 which I hadn't
notice in 12.04: VLC player won't start a CD or DVD until it is
ejected first from PCManFM in the left column.
Do you have PCManFM handle mounting volumes automatically? I found
using thunar --daemon in my startup applications worked well for
autoplaying DVDs when I insert them, but unfortunately PCManFM
doesn't yet have the ability to automatically open a program when
media is inserted.
Yes, mounting devices automatically seems to be on. I have installed
thunar now. Most useful as indeed it does show all tracks of the
CD/DVD from which you can start VLC and it actually works, Clicking
on the individual wav files from within PCManFM causes an error
message in VLC.
Also VLC won't start when a CD or DVD was present at start-up
although BIOS is set to boot from the hard disk. With BIOS setting
at CD/DVD reading first, the system won't even boot when a movie
DVD is present, but that is a handicap quickly learned to overcome.

Reinstalling VLC didn't solve anything

Henk

The system not booting when a movie is in seems to be a firmware
issue for your BIOS, it seems unlikely that this issue is related
to Lubuntu. Did this used to work, but now is broken?

Not sure, but after resetting the BIOS to boot from hard disk there
are still sometimes crashes in starting up the system when a disk is
present in the tray, so I should avoid that. I had not seen this
before nor does it show up in starting mint 16/LXDE from grub. But
also in mint 16 the problem exists that vlc cannot be restarted
unless after playing the disk is ejected first either manually or
from PCManFM, so that likely is an issue of this file manager.

Re: media player

That is useful information.
The next item to sort out for me is why audio in VLC for linux starts
with track 10 (if present) while track 1 follows track 19 and so on. ..

Never experienced this in windows.

Israel schreef op 20-4-2014 14:22:

Ok, yeah... the commands as follows:

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 regionset vlc
this installs the dvd reading library, the region setting program and vlc

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
this installs the content srcambling decoder (DRM videos have css
which scrambles the content)

sudo ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/dvd
this makes a symbolic link (you can think of it like a bookmark) from
your scd0 to your dvd directory for vlc (and other programs)

sudo regionset
this one is kinda dangerous. you can only do this one a certain
amount of times, before your DVD player is permenantly the region you
specify. using 0 is generally a good choice, as it lets you watch
'any' DVD.

The only command you probably needed to run was the one to install
the decoder. The restricted package brings in libdvdread4, and you
had vlc already and since you could watch dvds on your mint
install your dvd drive must have had the right region code however
you may have had to link the srcd0 to the dvd directory (or I suppose
you could tell vlc to look there instead of /dev/dvd).

Glad you figured it out!! Hope my commentary makes it easier to
understand what you did (if you ever need to do this again)
