[LUTE] an Ariette for cistre ou guitarre allemande (set by C.F.A Pollet 1770s)
Here is a shot at a fairly simple setting of a vocal number from the comic opera, Isabelle et Gertrude (1765) but published in a Recueil for cistre in the 1770s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K8LFVFI4iM C.F.A Pollet was the most prolific publisher of pieces and arrangements for the cistre (cythre) but he was not the most sophisticated. My cistre is a home-made thing but lute-maker Art Robb helped me finally get it in a playable condition. Cistres are tuned E-A-D-E-A-C#-E and often have extra basses. It's a wire-strung instrument with doubles on the top four courses and singles on the lower courses (like the English guitar). [LUTE] Harp-Lute
Some of you might have a passing interest in the so-called harp-lute. Somebody gave a loan of one yesterday, by Edward Light, and also a tutor by him. I managed to knock out three tunes today. Lovely, well done. What kind of strings are on it? David On 6 April 2013 21:13, Rob MacKillop robmackil...@gmail.com wrote: Some of you might have a passing interest in the so-called harp-lute. [LUTE] Re: Harp-Lute
Round ones... OK. I'm not prepared to give a well-researched answer, mainly because the instrument just arrived yesterday. The first three courses are gut, and the rest are nylgut core, copper wound. Probably lute strings. Today I took it to the Edinburgh International Harp Festival to see if anyone there knew about it, but I couldn't find anyone. The Edward Light instructions mention a red string and a black string. These will be familiar to harp payers, where C is red, and F is black, sometimes blue. So, if anyone has solid evidence, please let me know. Rob www.robmackillop.net On 6 Apr 2013, at 21:12, David van Ooijen davidvanooi...@gmail.com wrote: Lovely, well done. [LUTE] Re: Harp-Lute
I forwarded this to two of my lute students who both have deep harp backgrounds- maybe they will come back with string answers. Oh yes, very lovely! Thank you... Probably lute strings. Thanks. I love the sound you made on it, a lot fuller than I would have expected from such a small and thin box. Hence my question. But .. let's be fair, you can get a full and round sound out of any box with any kind of strings. :-) David *** David van Ooijen davidvanooi...@gmail.com www.davidvanooijen.nl *** To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
[LUTE] Re: Saturday quotes - The CD is not dead yet
I liked Ron's comments about CDs and still like them lots more the mp3s. In the case of lute CDs I especially like it when the booklets have some interesting words about the music. Nancy Our Saturday quotes are posted, this week about the reputed demise of the CD format.
