System directory for me is /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/ for LyX
2.4 app and I do see chkconfig.ltx there.

Like you, I have no idea how that file got in the wrong place.

Thanks for your help.

Re: LyX 2.4.0 RC3

2024-02-15 Thread list_email
Sorry for the slow response.

Running from a terminal indeed showed repeated configuration runs. Near the top
of the first run (and only the first run) were these lines:

+Running LyX configure with Python 3.9.18
Checking for upgrade from previous version.
Found directory "/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3".
Skip cache /Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3/cache
Content copied from directory "/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3”.

I found three identical copies of chkconfig.ltx in each of

/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.1/chkconfig.ltx
/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.2/chkconfig.ltx
/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3/chkconfig.ltx

I zipped all of them and trashed the original. Now LyX 2.4.0 RC3 runs great.

Thanks for that tip.

I know how that file got there: LyX put it there. Maybe if the configuration
file has changed for 2.4 then it shouldn’t copy old versions.

Note that 2.4 apparently just copies a bunch of stuff from the 2.3 directory
because now there is this file:

/Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.4/chkconfig.ltx.zip

which is obviously a copy of the file that I zipped, likely from the
corresponding 2.3 directory.

There is now no chkconfig.ltx in the 2.4 directory.

Re: LyX 2.4.0 RC3

2024-02-12 Thread list_email
I’m sorry to report continuing problems on macOS 12.7.2, Monterey with LyX
2.4.0 RC3.

Hangs (pinwheel) on first launch with only Apple and LyX menu items, then same
on second launch. Very low CPU and memory use. Force quit both.

Deleted /Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.4/

Re-launch. Opens “Welcome to LyX!”. Then I did Document -> View -> (PDF
(pdflatex)). No PDF is created. Instead, rapid looping of some messages in the
status bar, apparently involved with TeX stuff, such as “Indexing TeX files… .”
Document -> Cancel Export has no effect. At the same time, about 24 files are
being written or modified in /Users/me/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.4/
every 1-3 seconds. I am able to capture the contents of e.g. configure.log.
Attempt to quit normally causes this dialog: " LyX could not be closed because
documents are being processed by LyX.”

Force quit again.

Re-launch. Hangs as on first launch; no Welcome.

Re-boot. Same sort of behavior. Safe boot. Same: Sometimes opens Welcome then
hangs. Sometimes doesn’t finish drawing menu bar and hangs. Sometimes opens
Welcome and hangs when trying to open a new file. Can no longer get to where I
can attempt to make a PDF.

LyX 2,3.7 built with MacPorts still works fine.

Thanks, el.

Getting rid of macports for homebrew is not an option for me.

In my profile file, I have this:

alias python=/opt/local/bin/python3

which is macports. Does LyX see this? This alias points to Python 3.9.18. There
is a utility to switch to other versions.

I already have the command line tools installed, with Python 3.9.6 at
/usr/bin/phython3.

I just now tried switching to this line in my profile file:

alias python=/usr/bin/python3

with the same result.

Remember that LyX 2.3.7 works fine.

I have (now) had LyX hanging on launch for about two hours with the behavior
described earlier. I see two Pythons which re-launch every few seconds. I also
see pdftex starting and quitting every few seconds. For the pdftex process,
Activity Monitor lists a Python as the parent process and the Process Group as
LyX.

As above, LyX won’t finish launching. I believe it is trying to open only the
Welcome file. There is a slight possibility that it is also trying to open a
test document that I tried earlier (and described earlier in this thread) but
which was open when I force-quit LyX but had not been saved to disk. This test
was only a default new file with only a few words of text, which at the time
did create a PDF.

OK. See the attached text file. This is a portion of the output after maybe
five seconds. This portion, beginning with

LyX: reconfiguring user directory

repeats about once a second or two. I suppose this is the same frequency as the
Python and pdftex repeating things mentioned above.

The only thing that I see odd in this output is that it does not see my Firefox
or BibDesk apps.

Re: 2.4.0~RC1 hangs on macOS

Thanks, el.

I did as you suggested but there was no improvement and little change to the
problem. As the rapidly cycling status messages continue in the Welcome file, I
am able to start a new file and make a PDF of it. But I can’t close either the
new (unsaved) file or the Welcome file because it says it can’t quit because of
a background process. Normal quitting method has the same result. Clicking on
the spinning circle or red dot has no effect. I tried this multiple times, each
time deleting the Support file as you suggested.

Next, I deleted the app as well as these:

org.lyx.LyX-2.4.plist
org.lyx.lyx.plist
org.lyx.lyx.savedState (a folder)

and re-downloaded and re-launched the app. Now the behavior is worse, getting
only the app main menu with Apple logo and “LyX” item, and then nothing but
pinwheeling. It doesn’t even open the Welcome file or finish drawing the main
menu. I put the three deleted items back but it still hangs on launch.
Definitely going in the wrong direction here.

While LyX is hanging as above, Activity Monitor indicates that LyX has launched
one instance of Python and repeatedly launches and stops a second instance. My
current Python is 3.9 but versions up to 3.12 are installed by macports.

LyX 2.3.7 still works. I notice that I got this version through MacPorts.

2.4.0~RC1 hangs on macOS

2024-01-18 Thread list_email
I downloaded LyX 2.4.0~RC1 just now, copied to /Applications on macOS 12.7.2.
The “default” file opened telling me how great LyX is (I already knew). There
was a rapidly repeating series of messages in the status bar--something about
indexing and then looking for font Minion etc. After a while I clicked on a red
circle with a white “x” in it but nothing happened. I started a new file, typed
one sentence into it, and it successfully made a PDF. When I tried to close the
new file window LyX refused saying it was busy with a background process. Same
when I tried to quit normally, Command-Q. After about five minutes I force-quit
LyX. Double-clicked to re-launch, got Apple menu item and LyX menu item and
then got a hang (pinwheel, system log report). Had to force-quit again.
Repeated attempts to re-launch are the same.

[Sorry if this is a duplicate. Yesterday’s post hasn’t appeared yet.]

I have always downloaded LyX for Mac from lyx.org but I’m thinking of trying to

there would be any issues given that I have used the lyx.org version in the

https://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/lyx/bin/2.3.6/LyX-2.3.6.2+qt5-12-x86_64-cocoa.dmg

and I think it should be

https://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/lyx/bin/2.3.6/LyX-2.3.6.2+qt5-legacy-x86_64-cocoa.dmg.

BTW, what is “legacy?” I gather it is made using an older version of the macOS
frameworks. If so, THANK YOU for doing this. My Mac refuses to break and I
refuse to buy a new until it does (or Apple Silicon comes in my size) and Apple
doesn’t support a newer OS so I’m stuck at macOS 10.11.6.

Since we’re on the subject, what is the future of LyX on Apple Silicon? Rosetta
2? Native? Qt issues?

I don’t either, but thanks for the answer.

I found the problem—it was a broken LyX pipe or something like that. (I don’t
understand this well.) I discovered that when LyX quit it was leaving
.lyxpipe.in and .lyxpipe.out and the LyX wiki says that these should be deleted
when LyX quit.

How did I figure this out? I was using BibDesk (Mac GUI for BibTeX) and the
“Send to LyX” command. It failed with a very specific error dialog about the
LyX pipe. So I figured that Skim must do something similar.

Is it possible to have LyX also provide a helpful error dialog when there are
pipe problems instead of just failing quietly?

Reverse search with Skim broken again

2019-05-01 Thread list_email
I once again find that reverse search using Skim and LyX on macOS doesn’t work.
LyX 2.3.2, Skim 1.4.40. Forward search works but when reverse search is
attempted, LyX moves to the front but does not move the cursor and does not
scroll the window contents.

I don’t remember when this last worked but it was on the order of weeks ago. I
don’t remember when I updated LyX to 2.3.2.

LyX is at /Applications/Lyx.app

Skim is at /Applications/PDF_Viewers/Skim.app

I have read and re-read the list thread from March 14, 2018, and the wiki at
https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/SyncTeX. I’m stumped. This was working not long ago
and nothing has changed to my knowledge. However, I did notice that

Document > Settings > Formats > check Synchronize with output

somehow got checked off. Dunno how. No clue. Same document.

So here are my settings, stepping through the wiki steps:

Setting up LyX

• In Document > Settings > Formats, check Synchronize with output [DONE]

• If your viewer needs another output format than \synctex=-1 (which is the
default), select it or insert it in "Custom Macro” [BLANK—THIS IS THE DEFAULT I
GUESS]

• Modify Preferences > Output > General > PDF command for your PDF viewer
(see the viewer-specific notes below)

Skim

In LyX,

• LyX > Preferences > Output > General > PDF command:
/Applications/PDF_Viewers/Skim.app/Contents/SharedSupport/displayline $$n $$o
$$t [DONE AS INDICATED HERE]

In Skim:

• Skim PDF-TeX Sync setting: Custom [DONE]

• command: /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyxeditor [DONE]

• arguments: "%file" %line; /usr/bin/osascript -e 'tell application "LyX"
to activate'
[DONE]

How to use "abstract" package in LyX

2018-07-27 Thread list_email
This is going to get a little messy. Could be LaTeX-related but I can’t figure
out how to untangle the ERT I’m trying from the LyX file.

I’m using Article (Standard Class) with a non-default font in two-column mode.
I would like a nice one-column abstract that has a little wider margins than
the main body. The abstract package

http://mirror.las.iastate.edu/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/abstract/abstract.pdf

promises to do the job.

I’ve put the \usepackage{abstract} line in the LaTeX preamble under
Document->Settings. Then, trying to mimic the simple example at the above link,
I inserted the ERT as such:

\twocolumn[
\maketitle
\begin{onecolabstract}
Abstract text...
\end{onecolabstract}
]
\saythanks

Things go wrong. (1) The title, author, and date are correctly placed on the
first page, along with a footnote associate with the author’s name—footnote
contains e-mail address etc. There is nothing else on this first page! It is
mostly white space. On the second page the abstract (one column, inset margins,
smaller font, “Abstract” title, everything nice) correctly appears, followed by
the body of the paper in two columns as expected. But (2) the same “author”
footnote appears at the bottom of the first column of this second page.

I looked at the LaTeX export and saw a snippet that looks like this:

\maketitle
\twocolumn[
\maketitle
\begin{onecolabstract}
Abstract text...
\end{onecolabstract}
]
\saythanks

The \maketitle appears twice. If I delete the second one, the one inside the
twocolumn command that I inserted from LyX as ERT, nothing changes. However, if
I put that back in and delete the first \maketitle, _the one inserted into the
LaTeX by LyX_, I get a properly rendered document.

So this is why I’m posting to this list. How do I prevent LyX from inserting
the first \maketitle? Or am I misusing this package?

Cross Reference dialog box is wider than my screen

2018-07-24 Thread list_email
This is an old problem that I know I filed a ticket on years ago. The dialog
for Cross References attempts to display the entire path to the file in a
pop-up menu, regardless of how long the file path is. At the same time, in an
attempt to display the long pop-up menu item, the width of the dialog box is
adjusted, apparently without limit. The width can easily exceed the width of
the screen. The user can, with patience, drag the dialog box so that the right
edge is visible and can thus click on OK or Cancel or Apply, but attempts to
drag the right side of the box to the left and thus make the box narrower,
fail, as resizing is not allowed. This behavior persists even if the current
file path is not long, but a previously opened long file path remains as a
pop-up option. (Why do old file names live in this menu anyway?)

This isn’t how things are supposed to work. A long string for a pop-up menu
item is supposed to be truncated and terminated with an ellipse, …, and
hovering over the truncated string should show a tooltip with the entire string.

Some (old?) math display problems

2018-07-24 Thread list_email
LyX Version 2.3.0
macOS 10.11.6

I’m back to writing again and I think I’m seeing some old friends that I would
rather not see. Maybe someone can suggest work-arounds. These relate to math.

When I enter one or more inline math things in a paragraph and then hit RETURN
to start a new paragraph, the Equations part of the Outline pane shows an empty
set of parentheses, (), for each inline math thing. Since they don’t show any
useful information, just (), I think this is not good. Oddly, closing and
re-opening the file makes them disappear from the panel.

With Instant Preview on, each new numbered display equation, after rendering to
the “preview” state, is shown numbered as equation 1. Again, after closing and
re-opening the document, the previews show the correct equation number.

Again with Instant Preview on, equation labels are shown in a box on their own
line below the equation. But if the label is more than a few characters long
and if my window or split is set to say 50% of the width of my laptop’s screen,
the label is clipped on the right, not displaying the entire label. I notice a
polite vertical line of red dots at the place that this happens but the
clipping is still present. Yet,there is a section of unused white space to the
left of the label—the label could be moved left and enjoy a much larger area.

To be a bit more exact, I want LyX to _become_ front-most _after_ Command-Shift
click in Skim.

OK. I have egg on my face. (I don’t know if that translates into your slang.
8^) First, I was not receiving all the list mail, only yours. I just now fixed
my list subscription. Second and more important, as told in Stephan’s note, I
did not have the document setting for “Synchronize with output” turned on. I
guess I didn’t realize that setting was per-document. SORRY everyone. With that
turned on, syncing is working. The only problem that I see is that with reverse
search, the Skim document window is not brought to the front—but the scrolling
and highlighting does happen. Not sure that’s a LyX problem though—could be the
OS or Skim not sending the right (Applescipt?) command.

Still, though, I first tested with the default document when selecting File ->
New which is “Article (Standard Class)” and the “Synchronize with output”
setting is already checked, by default. My mistake then I suppose was assuming
that this would then happen with the IEEE template but that is a bad assumption.

Sorry again for the hassle and thanks as usual for all the friendly help.

Hi Joel,

Uh-oh. I just now made a small test document and both forward and reverse
search work as expected. However, in a paper originated from the LyX IEEE
template, it fails. In its forward attempt, Skim is brought to the front but
nothing else happens—no scrolling to the expected location and no highlighting
within Skim. (Skim places a red dot at the location for about five seconds
before it disappears, and also highlights the line.) Reverse search from Skim
does nothing.

I am working on a deadline for a paper and probably won’t have time to develop
a minimal example today, and possibly not until the end of the week.

OK—here’s a minimal example. Just open the IEEEtran-Journal.lyx template and
render it to Skim without modifying it. Behavior is as I describe above.

Forward and reverse search failing (again?) on 2.3.0rc

With LyX 2.3.0rc and Skim on Mac, both forward search and reverse search are
failing for me. Didn’t someone fix this not too long ago? It fails whether LyX
is in some random location or the supposed default location
/Applications/LyX.app.

Looks OK now but I didn't let the download complete since I already had done
the download before.

OS X links on this page apparently still point to 2.1.4.
