Many thanks for your reply. This is how minipages work. Let me ask a small question on this occasion - do you mean that a minipage will NEVER be split over pages (even if it is just a long piece of text) ? Why do you need it inside a minipage? On principle because I have a lng table with quite a lot of footnotes in it. So I just wanted to have a separate minipage with this table (and embedded footnotes). But ... if this is not possible ... I think I can also live with the longtable and footnotes in the bottom of the page. Best regards, Jacek. P.S. May I ask an unrelated question - when is the 1.1.6fix2 planed ?
Re: Lyx*geometry not understood by 1.1.6fix1
Hi Guenter... I had the same problem. The only way I found around it was to include the command line command in a start button on the Enlightenment start bar. LyX does not seem to want to respond to the .Xdefaults file at all. Also, since I'm using a hi-res screen, I couldn't use the straignt numbers of pixels I wanted the LyX window to open to. I had to multiply the -geometry figures by a third to a half again to get LyX to the size I wanted it to open as. The command line in the Enlightenment start-bar button is in the same form as the one you used to start LyX the way you want it from a terminal: lyx -geometry NNNxNNN I couldn't find anything else that worked. Who cares about proprietary Maple ;) What would be nice to have is importing of LaTeX generated by Maxima. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. No error messages, but the math will have very little WYSIWYM on the screen and LaTeX won't process the result. Here's small example: \documentclass[english]{article} \begin{document} $${{1}\over{\sqrt{3}}}\leqno{\tt (D1)}$$ \end{document} (Maxima generates only the math line, header and tail was inserted by me).
Layout things (humaniora)
Hi, Our Department (of History in the U of Oulu, Finland) has, of course, their own demands on the looks of things... Here are what are not quite obvious (to me): 1. Page numbering: First page. This is the "front page". I get a page number here, which is not good. Second page. Table of contents. This should be page 1. No number should be shown though. 2. Table of Contents: "Introduction" and "Conclusion" should not be numbered, but should show up in the TOC. Same goes for "Bibliography". 3. Bibliography: I need to have separate sections for stuff like "sources", "research", "printed"/"electronic documents" and the like. So there should be some headings for these. 4. References to the former: I see that lyx makes square brackets (which I can't seem to procuce on this terminal) around references in text. The Department wants me to refer in footnotes and not in the text, which make these inappropriate (what? how do you spell that?). Same goes in the References in the end: Baggins 1605Bilbo Baggins, Memoires. Rivendell 1605 ^ (no brackets wanted) 5. This has been discussed here, but I forgot how to change the heading of "References" (I get "Viitteet", need "Lähteet") This may all be due to using the wrong document classes, of course. I've tried Report (koma, too). Perhaps there is a class somewhere I could install, called, ah, maybe, "Historical thesis class for Europeans, especially preferred by Professor Manninen" - I could settle for something less spesific, too :-) Thanks in advance, Juha Siltala

This is easy to automate. You would get no ERT at all in LyX if reLyX was able to convert {1}\over{\sqrt{3}} as \frac{1}{sqrt{3}}: this is more difficult... Seems to work over here ;-) So, how do you do it? ;-) I'd like to see LyX as a GUI for some open Algebra System (something like Scientific workplace?) i.e. not so much for changing formulars on the fly but as a kind of "very pretty printing notebook". (Of course with the option to integrate the results in a "normal" LyX document.) I wonder whether the Lyxpipes are sufficient to achieve this or whether some changes whithin LyX are required. There is a promising open Computer Algebra System on the net called YACAS (http://www.xs4all.nl/~apinkus/) (I haven't tried yet) also MuPad (http://www.mupad.de/) could be interesting (although not open source) It allowes to specify the output format (and has already a latex output library (although this did not work for me)) so it might be convinced to send something interpretable to the Lyxpipe. Lyx*geometry not understood by 1.1.6fix1
Hi, since I upgraded to LyX 1.1.6fix1 (via rpm), LyX does not react on my ~.Xdefault setting. I had two lines telling LyX*width: 720 LyX*height:670 and with 1.1.5 this worked well. After looking in the man page, I changed this to LyX*geometry 720x670 but still no effect. However, starting LyX from a terminal with lyx -geometry 720x670 works as desired. Anyone else had this problem? (I know, I could make an alias, still I wonder whether there is another solution.) Guenter -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have a look at jurabib: http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~jberger/ for the footnotes. You will find that it handles citations in footnotes in a relatively flexible way. You can also download the bst file jachicago, which is a modification of achicago.bst made to work with the jurabib.sty file. > >>4. Many thanks for your reply. > This is how minipages work. Let me ask a small question on this occasion - do you mean that a minipage will NEVER be split over pages (even if it is just a long piece of text) ? > Why do you "need" it inside a minipage? On principle because I have a "lng" table with quite a lot of footnotes in it. So I just wanted to have a separate minipage with this table (and "embedded" footnotes). But ... if this is not possible ...
LongTable and MiniPage
Hi, I've met the following problem. I would need a LongTable ("Table Layout -> Spec. Table -> Longtable") which is inside of a MiniPage ("Layout -> Paragraph Environment -> ParagraphExtra Layout -> [Minipage + Width -> 100%]"). As long as I have the LongTable outside of the MiniPage it is correctly split over many pages. As soon as I switch the MiniPage on, the table is placed on one (single) page, up to the end of this page, and is cut (just the beginning is there). Could you, please, help me, Thanks in advance, Jacek.
RTF > LaTex conversion
Is there a program that will convert RTF to LaTex (or Lyx) that would make it easier to import a document into Lyx with most of the formatting in place? Converting RTF to, importing the text to Lyx, and then going through the document by hand is a bit time-comsuming when dealing with 60 page+ documents. Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

I've just tried the mbox method (i must have missed it before) this seems stable across saves and reopening the saved version looks like this \begin_inset Formula \( \Delta vol=\frac{4\pi }{3}\left( r_{pH2}-r_{pH7}\right) ^{3}=\frac{4\pi }{3}\left( 17.87\mbox {\AA }-16.03\mbox {\AA }\right) ^{3}=\frac{4\pi }{3}*6.263\mbox {\AA }^{3}=26.24\mbox {\AA }^{3} \) Well that puts my homework out the door but doesn't explain this textrm problem (I think its save to say its a problem with textrm since the mbox method works). Thanks for the workaround! I think my goal is now two fold 1) figure out what this textrm is all about and why it gets funky on save and reopen 2) add something like \rho or \pi for \AA to the math mode so that we don't have to enter another mode to get this symbol (and maybe others?) Put the following line in the preamble \newcommand{\mAA}{\mbox{\AA}} in the preamble, and then use \mAA in math mode. Perhaps a better solution is to put the following lines in the preamble \let\oldAA=\AA \renewcommand{\AA}{\ensuremath{\mbox{\oldAA}}} and then you can use \AA in math mode.
