You can try the seminar layout from the LyX ftp server, look under

It was done for 1.1.6, but should work with 1.2.1. too.

However, it has different names for the environments and a different

\headheight

2002-08-26 Thread Lars Risan

Hi,

How do I control \headheight (etc)?

First; As an social anthropologist, and as one of the very, very few
LYX-users at the faculty of humanities: LYX is absoulutely faboulous! It is a
tradegy that 99.9% of my colleauges use MS Word.

But sometimes using LYX can be frustrating, as I am the only person at my
department who even know that there is such a thing as LYX/LaTeX. I have
nobody to talk to, to get the simple advice from. Like now:

I'd like to change the font size of the header. It is extremely difficult to
figure out how to do it. And the problem isn't the software -- The lyx-team
is doing a wonderful job with the software! Even my old 1.1.4fix3 is
excellent! (And I don't want to replace it now, as this is the version that
University of Oslo distributes locally)

No, the problem is this:

At Header/footer at lyx.org/help (http://www.lyx.org/help/fancy/header.php)
I learn usful AND advanced tricks. There is links to two introductory pages:

http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/clmt/latex4ling/headers/
http://research.cmis.csiro.au/gjw/tex/docs/fancyhdr.pdf
(I have also tried to search the web for better documentation, and perhaps
there is something out there, but I haven't found it.)

The latter document (Page layout in LaTeX) tells me that \headheight sets
fontsize at the header. The document also tells me that fancydhr.sty makes it
possible to have control over fonts, uppercase .. etc. But it is, to me,
TOTALLY, UNUTTERLY AND ABSOLUTELY impossible to simply understand
what to write in the preamble to control, for example, the \headheight. For
example: Do I need to use the fancy pagestyle in order to use \headheight?
And if so, what is the syntax of the command?

I promise you one thing, all those of you who makes LYX into the most
wonderful machine for writng scientific stuff ever, I promise that when I
have completed my thesis (in a couple of mounths), I'll write a web-page
called LYX for the humanities -- where I explain how LYX may be used to
write philosophy, history, anthropology, etc. I'll do my best to improve the
basic documentation of this wonderful program.

Because; now I have used alomost 3 hours to figure out how to control the
font size in the header. And I can't figure it out. I am sure the syntax is
simple, if someone just shows it to me. But it is, again, TOTALLY and
ABSURDELY impossible to read the documantation!

So, finally; anybody who know how to change the font size in the header?

Lars

Unwanted indent problem (1.2.1)

2002-08-26 Thread Peter

Hi,

I have a problem with an unwanted indent which I can't seem to get rid
of and I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer.

What I am trying to do is create a layout where I can have half-width,
centered paragraphs with the first line of the first such paragraph
*not* indented and then with subsequent paragraphs of the same style
having their first lines indented.

The problem I am having is that the first line of the first paragraph is
always indented by a small amount. I can get rid of it by editing the
LaTeX generated by LyX, but I'd naturally prefer not to do that.

I have attached three files. The LyX source, the LaTeX generated by LyX,
and the layout file which I am using for the document.

The change that I make to the LaTeX file to get rid of the indent is to
add a % at the end of the \begin{authorsays} line.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Peter

My personal bind file. Re: Document about function/key bindings

2002-08-26 Thread Bo Peng

As many of you can guess, I spent several hours in checking my personal
bind file. I finally get it done and write a reference to it. The
nice things I added are math-insert cases, one-side delimits, etc.

To apologize for my several emails, I am attaching my bind file along
with the reference lyx file. How I wish we can have such a reference
file for each system bind file.

Note that to make use of my bind file, you need to modify the system
sciword.bind a little bit (remove C-g). System math.bind also has
an error.

Have a very nice day.

Hello:

I tried the layout available at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/seminar.tar.gz. But it is not working
properly in LyX 1.2.1.

Then I tried the layout files given by Herbert Voss. These are attached
below. This is my observation:

1. This layout works properly only if the page style is plain.
2. If you use hyperref, it does not work properly.

Both the files attached should be copied into layout directory.

I feel that seminar layout is still not stable on LyX and it is safer to
directly use LaTeX to create documents using seminar, especially when
you have portrait and landscape slides, page headers and footers, and
hyperref.

As many of you can guess, I spent several hours in checking my personal

nice things I added are math-insert cases, one-side delimits, etc.

To apologize for my several emails, I am attaching my bind file along
with the reference lyx file. How I wish we can have such a reference
file for each system bind file.

Note that to make use of my bind file, you need to modify the system
sciword.bind a little bit (remove C-g). System math.bind also has

Hello:

I tried the layout available at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/seminar.tar.gz. But it is not working
properly in LyX 1.2.1.

Then I tried the layout files given by Herbert Voss. These are attached
below. This is my observation:

1. This layout works properly only if the page style is plain.
2. If you use hyperref, it does not work properly.

Both the files attached should be copied into layout directory.

I feel that seminar layout is still not stable on LyX and it is safer to
directly use LaTeX to create documents using seminar, especially when
you have portrait and landscape slides, page headers and footers, and
hyperref.

Set that to '0em' if you don't want any space there.

At "Header/footer" at lyx.org/help (http://www.lyx.org/help/fancy/header.php)
I learn usful AND advanced tricks. There is links to two introductory pages:

http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/clmt/latex4ling/headers/
http://research.cmis.csiro.au/gjw/tex/docs/fancyhdr.pdf
(I have also tried to search the web for better documentation, and perhaps
there is something out there, but I haven't found it.)

The latter document ("Page layout in LaTeX") tells me that \headheight sets
fontsize at the header. The document also tells me that fancydhr.sty makes it
possible to have control over "fonts, uppercase .. etc." But it is, to me,
TOTALLY, UNUTTERLY AND ABSOLUTELY impossible to simply understand
what to write in the preamble to control, for example, the \headheight. For
example: Do I need to use the fancy pagestyle in order to use \headheight?
And if so, what is the syntax of the command?

I promise you one thing, all those of you who makes LYX into the most
wonderful machine for writng scientific stuff ever, I promise that when I
have completed my thesis (in a couple of mounths), I'll write a web-page
called "LYX for the humanities" -- where I explain how LYX may be used to
write philosophy, history, anthropology, etc.

The change that I make to the LaTeX file to get rid of the indent is to
add a "%" at the end of the "\begin{authorsays}" line.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Peter

The control sequence at the end of the top line of your error message was
never \def'ed. If you have misspelled it (e.g., '\hobx',), type 'I' and the
correct spelling (e.g., 'I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue, and I'll forget

It somewhat like looking a variable named "Age" in my enumerated list.

I feel that seminar layout is still not stable on LyX and it is safer to
directly use LaTeX to create documents using seminar, especially when
you have portrait and landscape slides, page headers and footers, and
hyperref.

I don't think they are special... Strange.

Btw, is "C-Up" easier to type than "^"?

I am not sure. Jean-Marc recently changed this to \Psi, so maybe there is
really no such thing as a \Varphi.

Simply type "\cases", or if you want to bind it, bind it to "math-insert
\cases".

Most things actually can be entered directly.

In 1.1.6 the math panel is under "Edit".

Fairly ancient version. "Recent" is something like 1.2.1

The "purple equation box" basically _is_ mathed. The panel is under Edit,
or you can pop it up by typing M-x math-panel

Here you explicitly order a paragraph indent of 2em (approximately the
twice the width of the letter 'm'.

Set that to '0em' if you don't want any space there.
