Insert a figure float. Go inside, set the paragraph type to

(insert-minipage)  with a hfill (insert-special-hfill) between them.
Set each minipage to 50% of COL or less.
In each minipage, include graphichs (insert-graphichs)  Center 
the graphichs using layout-pragraph.
Press enter after each graphich, to get a new paragraph. 
Set the paragraph type to caption, and enter caption text.

eventually to add to LyX the capability to have multiple views on one's buffer.
This is one of the few things I miss when I use LyX rather than emacs.  Do any
of those superlative developers have an idea when we grateful users might see
that feature?

Not in LyX 1.4, which I regard as something like the culmination of 
the code clean-up that was started in LyX 1.1. (If such a process can 
ever be culminated.)

Most (all?) of the fundamental reasons why we couldn't do it before 
have now been removed. Lots of people (developers included) are 
thinking seriously about how to proceed from here. I think that it's 
fair to say that multiple views have not been forgotten.

I am writing a document at work and at home. At work my keyboard is
ABTN2 (brazilian keyboard layout) and at home is an english
(international) keyboard, so the position of the accents (~; ^; '; `) is
different in each keyboard. When the document was transferred to the
computer with the ABTN-2 keyboard, all letters that contain accents have
just disappeared (and there is a lot a such letters in portuguese). May
anyone help me to fix it out? I would not like to  go through the whole
document to spellcheck every word.

Could you post a (short) example lyx document that works on your home 
machine and not on your work one.

Sure, but first i would like to make something clear. The original
document was written at work (with the ABTN2 keyboard), I continued to
work on it at home (english keyboard) and today I sent it back to work.
Then the problem with the accents appeared.
Here is a small sample of the output in lyx:
H uma estrutura secundria de RNA localizada na regio intergenica entre
pstS e pstC, cuja presena foi demonstrada pela tcnica de extenso de
primer 
But it should be:
Há uma estrutura secundária de RNA localizada na região intergenica

It will take a while. Currently, the possibility to have multiple
viewssome day is just some kind of sanity check to judge whether a given
patch is good or bad.

The main problem is that the document data (i.e. the actual characters
of the document) and 'presentational' data (i.e. what character is
displayed at what position of a row) a not well enough separated. Things
have improved lately but I doubt 1.5 will come with mutiple views.
Certainly not 1.4.

Well, I use \quad and the LyX code layout. This produces real ugly LaTeX
but works.

Of course, proper support for algorithm.sty would be nice (and should
not be too hard to do...)

Help on siamltex document class or something better

Any help is appreciated.

If you have no idea about siamltex, could you recommend a good simple document class 
that can be installed into lyx and contains all the theorem, lemma and proof ... 
environments? I don't like AMS document class for some reasons. Just want something 
simple as default article class + those maths enviroments. 

If you have tried siamltex article class, you may want to continue.

I am having some problems of using siamltex document class.

First, I downloaded siamltex.tar from www.siam.org and texhashed them into the 
database. Then I downloaded siamltex.layout 1.7 and put them into $HOME/.lyx/layouts/. 
After that I reconfigured the lyx and it found siamltex class with yes, no complain.

But when I tried to write articles using siamltex document class, I encountered two 
problems:
1. Latex compiler seems to have problems with table of contents created by siamltex 
document class. The error message is Undefined control sequence \tableofcontents {}.
2.Though I could set the environment change in lyx while writing a paper, i.e. changes 
for theorem, lemma , proof..., they all disappear when I view them in xdvi. I checked 
corresponding .tex file generated by lyx and found out that those environment 
definitions are not inserted into tex file. I guess this might be the reason why xdvi 
couldn't display them properly. 

If I switch to article (AMS) document class, all those problems are gone.

My machine is dell inspiron 8200. OS is linux redhat8.0. Lyx version is 1.3.3 and 
latex version (according to latex configuration file generated by lyx) is 2000/06/01. 
And I am not very good at latex.

LyX and VNC, font problem

Dear LyX users,

I am using LyX through a VNC display. Everything works fine, except that 
fonts in LyX display in a very low resolution. Trying to modify the font 
settings (fixed or scalable, screen DPI) in lyxrc did not change a thing.
I have made sure that VNC can access all fonts in my X system, and Mozilla 
displays perfectly, so it seems the problem lies with LyX.
Upon starting LyX in VNC I get the message:

Xlib:  extension GLX missing on display :1.0.

Can this be some kind of bug in Xlib, or is it something else?

Beny,

Sounds like a localization issue with the locales package installed on your 
system.  Since you don't list the operating system you have running and what 
locales package support you have installed versus that of the other system I 
would check this as an option to investigate.  

I'd also check whether or not your TeX/LaTeX installation wasn't corrupted by 
any chance.

Hmm, I have a clear memory of using graphics with Linuxdoc but I must be 
wrong.  Time to get going with Docbook, I suppose.  I have found a 
helpful comment on Docbook tools handling of graphics at 
http://articles.linuxguru.net/view/202#AEN6 -- each target file format 
requires a different graphics file type:

   *

  In your document do not specify the file type, as each
  conversion routine will expect a different extension, except the
  HTML conversion which takes this literally. This is why I asked
  you above not to have the .png extension on your PNG files. The
  browser can determine the file type anyway. Here is an example
  for a screen shot:

How to visually divide between Picture Captions and Test

Hello!

I'm just writing my thesis with this great program, but now I stumbled over a
style problem...

When I add a picture in a float this picture may be set as top on a side.
Unfortunately the caption has to be below the picture and is in the same style
as the normal text, so it's sometimes difficult to see where to read further.

Is there a possibility to change the style of the caption or, perhaps better,
add a horizontal line between caption and text (or something like that)?

I assume I could do this with a forced newline and \hrule in the caption, but
this would not look too good in the List of Figures -- and I would have to
manually add it when needed...

patch is good or bad.

The main problem is that the document data (i.e. the actual characters
of the document) and 'presentational' data (i.e. what character is
displayed at what position of a row) a not well enough separated. Things
have improved lately but I doubt 1.5 will come with mutiple views.
Certainly not 1.4.

but works.

Help on siamltex document class or something better

Any help is appreciated.

If you have no idea about siamltex, could you recommend a good simple document class 
that can be installed into lyx and contains all the theorem, lemma and proof ... 
environments? I don't like AMS document class for some reasons. Just want something 
simple as default article class + those maths enviroments. 

If you have tried siamltex article class, you may want to continue.

I am having some problems of using siamltex document class.

First, I downloaded siamltex.tar from www.siam.org and texhashed them into the 
database. Then I downloaded siamltex.layout 1.7 and put them into $HOME/.lyx/layouts/. 
After that I reconfigured the lyx and it found siamltex class with yes, no complain.

But when I tried to write articles using siamltex document class, I encountered two 
problems:
1. Latex compiler seems to have problems with table of contents created by siamltex 
document class. The error message is Undefined control sequence \tableofcontents {}.
2.Though I could set the environment change in lyx while writing a paper, i.e. changes 
for theorem, lemma , proof..., they all disappear when I view them in xdvi. I checked 
corresponding .tex file generated by lyx and found out that those environment 
definitions are not inserted into tex file. I guess this might be the reason why xdvi 
couldn't display them properly. 

If I switch to article (AMS) document class, all those problems are gone.

My machine is dell inspiron 8200. OS is linux redhat8.0. Lyx version is 1.3.3 and 
latex version (according to latex configuration file generated by lyx) is 2000/06/01. 
And I am not very good at latex.

LyX and VNC, font problem

Dear LyX users,

I am using LyX through a VNC display. Everything works fine, except that 
fonts in LyX display in a very low resolution. Trying to modify the font 
settings (fixed or scalable, screen DPI) in lyxrc did not change a thing.
I have made sure that VNC can access all fonts in my X system, and Mozilla 
displays perfectly, so it seems the problem lies with LyX.
Upon starting LyX in VNC I get the message:

Xlib:  extension GLX missing on display :1.0.

Can this be some kind of bug in Xlib, or is it something else?

Sounds like a localization issue with the locales package installed on your 
system.  Since you don't list the operating system you have running and what 
locales package support you have installed versus that of the other system I 
would check this as an option to investigate.  

I'd also check whether or not your TeX/LaTeX installation wasn't corrupted by 
any chance.

Hmm, I have a clear memory of using graphics with Linuxdoc but I must be 
wrong.  Time to get going with Docbook, I suppose.  I have found a 
helpful comment on Docbook tools handling of graphics at 
http://articles.linuxguru.net/view/202#AEN6 -- each target file format 
requires a different graphics file type:

  In your document do not specify the file type, as each
  conversion routine will expect a different extension, except the
  HTML conversion which takes this literally. This is why I asked
  you above not to have the .png extension on your PNG files. The
  browser can determine the file type anyway. Here is an example
  for a screen shot:

How to visually divide between Picture Captions and Test

Hello!

I'm just writing my thesis with this great program, but now I stumbled over a
style problem...

When I add a picture in a float this picture may be set as top on a side.
Unfortunately the caption has to be below the picture and is in the same style
as the normal text, so it's sometimes difficult to see where to read further.

Is there a possibility to change the style of the caption or, perhaps better,
add a horizontal line between caption and text (or something like that)?

I assume I could do this with a forced newline and \hrule in the caption, but
this would not look too good in the List of Figures -- and I would have to
manually add it when needed...

Set each minipage to 50% of COL or less.
In each minipage, include graphichs (insert->graphichs)  Center 
the graphichs using layout->pragraph.
Press enter after each graphich, to get a new paragraph. 
Set the paragraph type to caption, and enter caption text.

Not in LyX 1.4, which I regard as something like the culmination of 
the code clean-up that was started in LyX 1.1. (If such a process can 
ever be culminated.)

Most (all?) of the fundamental reasons why we couldn't do it before 
have now been removed. Lots of people (developers included) are 
thinking seriously about how to proceed from here. I think that it's 
fair to say that multiple views have not been forgotten.

ABTN2 (brazilian keyboard layout) and at home is an english
(international) keyboard, so the position of the accents (~; ^; '; `) is
different in each keyboard. When the document was transferred to the
computer with the ABTN-2 keyboard, all letters that contain accents have
just disappeared (and there is a lot a such letters in portuguese). May
anyone help me to fix it out? I would not like to  go through the whole
document to spellcheck every word.

Could you post a (short) example lyx document that works on your home 
machine and not on your work one.

Is there a possibility to change the style of the caption or, perhaps better,
add a horizontal line between caption and text (or something like that)?

I assume I could do this with a forced newline and \hrule in the caption, but
this would not look too good in the List of Figures -- and I would have to
manually add it when needed...

It seems usable, but it's a substantial investment of time just to get 
the tools and configuration set up.  Is this still the easiest way (in 
your opinion) to produce the various product files from LyX generated 
DocBook SGML?  Any changes for recent LyX, esp 1.4?
