Missing Shortcut in Navigation Menu?

2006-03-21 Thread Michael 'Mickey' Lauer
Hi guys,

I want to gather your feedback before I submit the following feature
request:
The keyboard bindings in the LyX navigation menu are great, you get to
the section 5.2 by just typing (for instance) ALT-N-5-2. Since I have a
really large document (dissertation thesis for example), this is pretty
helpful. However I can't find a keyboard binding to jump to the
beginning of a chapter - I find myself having to use the mouse to
activate the chapter submenu in the navigation menu. Having a '0'
keyboard shortcut would be a welcome feature. In that case you could
jump to the beginning of chapter 5 with ALT-N-5-0.

Does that make sense to you?

Radwan.

Hello Radwan,

I am glad you have joined the testing team which will lead to
improved releases for the host of potential WinLyX users.

LyX has a tendency to work better in English, but I think
that is not intentional and support for Unicode is scheduled
for LyX1.5 or Lyx1.6 (one or the other is XML).

Both testers, referred to in the top of this post, have English
machines and are not likely to find bugs with foreign languages.

If I find a potential bug, first I search bugzilla which has this url:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/ where one can peform a keyword search,
in this case I used language which returned nine results. One
can add comments to the report to supplement the information.

LyX1.4.0 was very recently released. It was frozen with about
70 fixes available but not applied. They should all be applied by
the final release of 1.4.1. WinLyX 1.4.1svn; the executable you
installed is a pre which means it has had some of those patches
applied which improves its stability in comparison to 1.4.0

Since 1.4.0 is new, one won't find much discussion of how to fix
problems which have just been introduced with 1.4.0 on the User
mailing list. It is not easy to know how to sort those out. So after
checking bugzilla I search the archives of the Developer mailing
list but it is a while before their workarounds filter over to the User
list. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=lyx-devel sometimes this archive
is down, so I use http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/
http://www.lyx.org/internet/mailing.php has a link to the LyX Wiki
which is also searchable. I usually search those first before I report a
bug on the developer list. Georg on the developer list has a good grasp
on all the reported bugs. I 've seen your problem reported before but
can't remember the details. If it is new, he or someone will direct you
to file a bug report. LyX-Tools-Preferences-Language settings-
Language, has a default setting for Language: Is yours set to French?

LyX137 is very stable and has received a lot of polish. The developers
have made Aspell compatible for both LyX137 and LyX14x and the
default installation of LyX14x creates a separate installation folder up
in .../Application data Lyx1.4.x, so that preferences are not confused
or overwritten. I think it is prudent to preserve the LyX137 version as
some functions may not have survived the major transition to LyX140.

Though this is useful information, I will look around for something more
specific to a solution for you, and maybe somebody directly involved
with your problem will correct it. Juergen is strong in this area.

Has anyone seen spam on the wiki lately?

2006-03-21 Thread christian . ridderstrom
Hi

Someone calling himself Stanley has been trying to ... spam ... a page on
http://wiki.lyx.org twice recently... Both times he's created a new page
called

http://wiki.lyx.org/Field/SideBar-group-Site

Actually, I'm not sure what he is doing since he doesn't seem to know how
to change his text into a link... He's just inserted something like

Over 2500 Designs, High Quality and Unbeatable Low Prices -
Take a Look

but since there's nothing linking this anywhere, it's kind of pointless.
For those wondering, he should be doing something like this:

[[Over 25000 designs ... bla - http://bad.spam.site]]

On the other hand, he's been clever enough to choose a page which is
automatically included in the sidebar whenver you're in the group 'Site'.

Anyway, if there's a Stanley on this list and there's a valid reason,
please let me know. Otherwise, if we see any spam on the wiki we'll just
introduce either a password for editing pages, or we require that external
links need to be approved before they work.

best regards

charstyle-insert

2006-03-21 Thread Markus Mayer
Hi,

I am having problems using the new charstyle-insert feature as per
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX14#toc5.

When I try it, I always get Command disabled (charstyle-insert xxx).
It doesn't matter which style I am specifying. Nobody else has reported
this problem, so I am assuming I am doing something wrong.

Does anybody have any tips for me?

Thanks.

Yes, the Subject: could be prefixed with [LyX-user]

Or you can use an email client which supports email rules:

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the message body contains 'lyx'
Move it to the LyX folder (create a LyX folder first)

This method might not capture every email like Subject: [LyX-user]

in a certain folder (or in the case of gmail, is archived and labled

You are using Thunderbird [1] so it might be a good idea to add a filter for
this list. (And maybe also for other lists you are subscribed to)

It will need some further configuration of thunderbird. But I will bet if you
use filtering of incomming emails to folders for only a short time you will
never want to miss this. And may be you will also find it funny when you see
such questions like yours then.

So please do yourself a faivour and configure and use filters for your
subscribed mailing lists (and for your fellows, sweethearts, whatsoever :)

For this:
- add a new local folder to your list of folders
right click on 'local folders' and choose 'new folder'
give it a usefull name, e.g. 'LyX'
- add a filter rule
 · from the thunderbird menu choose 'Extras' - 'Filters'
 · at the top there is an entry 'filter for...'
right of this you will see a drop down button
 · click this button and select the mail account for which you want to add a
   filter.
It should be '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' if you prefer to work with
imap mail folders.
If you prefer using to download your email via a pop account it should be
'local folders'
 · now select the 'New...' button at the right of the window
 · give a 'Filter Name' to this new filter, e.g. 'lyx-users'
 · push the drop down button which shows 'subject' and select 'customize' (it
is the last entry at the bottom of the list)
 · now fill in 'List-Post' and click the OK button [2]
 · you are back at the 'edit filter' window
 · select the drop down button 'subject' again and choose 'List-Post'
 · the drop down list right of 'List-Post' should show 'contains' (the first
entry at the top of the drop down list) If not select it.
 · Fill in 'lyx-users@lists.lyx.org' in the input box at the right.
 · now choose an action to tell the filter what to do if a mail with the
header 'List-Post' and 'lyx-users@lists.lyx.org' comes in.
Choose 'move ... to' (... should be mail or news, according to the english
translation, sorry my thunderbird speaks german ;-)
 · right of this choose the button to place where to put the mail in.
Choose 'LyX', this is the name of the folder we added at the first
   beginning.
 · click the 'OK' button
 · you are back to the 'Filter' window
 · click on the bottom right button 'jetzt ausfuehren' in german, in english
it should be a term saying 'make use of the filter now'
From now on all emails from lyx-users list shoud immediately go to your local
folder 'LyX'.

You will find some more input including screenshots on how to use filters:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Filters_%28Thunderbird%29
http://opensourcearticles.com/thunderbird_15/english/part_07

BTW. Using filters and sorting emails to certain folders or virtual folders
(e.g. by evolution) is the one and only state of the art to handle a huge
ammount of lists and postings.

Adding pseudo subjects like [Lyx users ML: 01] as you mentioned is a bad
habbit which shows that the subscribers and often also the adminstrators of a
mailing list are on a not high skill level (quite close to poor).
And sooner or later it will drive you round the bend. ;-).

It is a bit like a companies post office wich tags all incomming (snail) mail
with post-it lables and then having all this (may be thousands) mails in a
single carton box.

No one would do so, not if he or she is not close to brain dead :-))

It's state of the art since the early beginning of mail communication to sort
mail in folders. And everyone knows this, but by using email a lot of people
seem to forget such fundametal attainments.
Funny, isn't it. ;-)

regards,
Thomas

[1] So says one of the headers of your email:
User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5 (Windows/20051201)
[2] What we've done so far is adding a new email header as a filter criteria.
The lyx-user email list uses 'List-Post'. List-Post is one header which is
sent by the lyx mail server. It says:
'List-Post: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
You will see all the headers by choosing 'View' - 'Headers' - 'All' from
the thunderbird menu.
The header 'List-Post' is not used by all mailing list servers but it is
one of the most used one. If you have a closer look to the header fields
you should always find a header which contains the term 'list'. So at
least if the list manager knows how to do the job. E.G. 'X-Mailing-List'
is another common used mailing list header.

 Hi Stacia and Stephen

 Thank you for your comments.
 Actually I use mail filtering.
May I ask, you really use filters to sort incoming emails to local folders?
Sorting incomming emails from the LyX list to a folder LyX for example?

Or do you just use filters in the meaning of highlighting mails by subjects?

But I think mail subject would be better when it's easy to recognize.
The reason I feel present subject style of this ML isn't easy to
recognize may be due to the fact that English isn't my native language.
I would think that english isn't the native language of many people on this
list. So the problem you are facing is the same for us, at least for me.
And I'm a non native speaker when I am more than 50km from home due to the
fact that frisian [1] is spoken only in a local region here in germany.
So I'm a non-native speaking native german. :-))

[1] Frisian is a regional language spoken in the coastal region of the dutch
sea from the island Terschelling in the Netherlands over the coastal region
of northern Germany up to the island Ameland in Denmark.

Insert a paragraph with a bogus note after the quote.

Radwan.

---

Yes, the Subject: could be prefixed with [LyX-user]

Or you can use an email client which supports email rules:

Apply this rule after the message arrives

Move it to the LyX folder (create a LyX folder first)

Mickey.

mouse wheel control

2006-03-21 Thread Russell Davie
Hi All

The mouse wheel control doesn't seem to control any movement in the mouse at
all.

Tools -> Preferences -> (down bottom of dialogue) Scrolling .enter the speed

I've cranked it up to full speed at 250, but the mouse speed is the same as if
it was set at 1.
How can this be made to work?

This is using:

Printing grom though Kprinter

2006-03-21 Thread Charles de Miramon
Hello,

With LyX 1.3.7, you could change the spool command in the Printer
preferences dialog to kprinter to funnel printing through kprinter.

I'm unable to make it work with 1.4.0 and 1.4.1svn

Am I alone ?

Cheers,

Indeed. But, as I already said, it needs to be reviewed. I was missing this
case and then there is the PATH prefix handling one. As it is now, the PATH
prefix is to be entered in posix format, irrespectively of the checkbox
status (whose name needs to be changed, too).

I had a small problem with it recognizing the Viewers correctly (maybe).

Angus is to be commended for providing this release by sacrificing
his free time since he is no longer "officially" a LyX worker, IMO.
Since I only saw two test responses, a larger group might be helpful.

This means that latex failed to produce a dvi...

This is normal. Cygwin has support for the C locale only. However, you
will get translated menus from gettext.

Insert a paragraph with a bogus note after the quote.

Or

Sorry about the previous message. Below is the script as I copy-pasted

and at first not recognized by me to be part of the script.

I tried the corrected script but still it doesn't work. I get an error

If I find a potential bug, first I search bugzilla which has this url:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/ where one can peform a keyword search,
in this case I used "language" which returned nine results. One
can add comments to the report to supplement the information.

LyX1.4.0 was very recently released. It was frozen with about
70 fixes available but not applied. They should all be applied by
the final release of 1.4.1. WinLyX 1.4.1svn; the executable you
installed is a "pre" which means it has had some of those patches
applied which improves its stability in comparison to 1.4.0

If it is new, he or someone will direct you
to file a bug report. LyX->Tools->Preferences->Language settings->

Stephen

Ah! In my first cursory glance I was missing this. Now it is clear what
is happening. When a path contains spaces, LyX quotes it by \string"
and the script wasn't expecting that :(

Hi

Someone calling himself Stanley has been trying to ... spam ... a page on
http://wiki.lyx.org twice recently... Both times he's created a new page
called

http://wiki.lyx.org/Field/SideBar-group-Site

Actually, I'm not sure what he is doing since he doesn't seem to know how
to change his text into a link... He's just inserted something like

Over 2500 Designs, High Quality and Unbeatable Low Prices -
Take a Look

but since there's nothing linking this anywhere, it's kind of pointless.
For those wondering, he should be doing something like this:

[[Over 25000 designs ... bla -> http://bad.spam.site]]

On the other hand, he's been clever enough to choose a page which is
automatically included in the sidebar whenver you're in the group 'Site'.

Anyway, if there's a Stanley on this list and there's a valid reason,
please let me know. Otherwise, if we see any spam on the wiki we'll just
introduce either a password for editing pages, or we require that external
links need to be approved before they work.

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX14#toc5.

When I try it, I always get "Command disabled (charstyle-insert xxx)".
It doesn't matter which style I am specifying. Nobody else has reported
this problem, so I am assuming I am doing something wrong.

Does anybody have any tips for me?

Thanks.

Hi everyone

Recently, I joined this Lyx ML.

Why this ML doesn't use a title, intuitively recognized as Lyx ML mail.
Such as, [Lyx users ML: 01],,,

I receive many mails, almost drowning. I need easy title to recognize
that this mail belongs to Lyx ML.

Takashi Shiihara from Japan.

Yes, the Subject: could be prefixed with [LyX-user]

Or you can use an email client which supports email rules:

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the message body contains 'lyx'
Move it to the LyX folder (create a LyX folder first)

This method might not capture every email like Subject: [LyX-user]
would, but should work quite well in the meantime.

Regards,
Stephen

I just make a rule that says all mail to lyx-users@lists.lyx.org goes
in a certain folder (or in the case of gmail, is archived and labled
with LyX). This works fine for me and catches all the mail.

 · from the thunderbird menu choose 'Extras' -> 'Filters'

Funny, isn't it. ;-)

It says:
'List-Post: '
You will see all the headers by choosing 'View' -> 'Headers' -> 'All' from
the thunderbird menu.

Hi Thomas

Thank you for your detailed coments.
I'm glad to know your advice.

I'm sorry that my question(s) is not associated with Lyx itself, but I
have another question about this Lyx ML.

Why this ML doesn't use "Reply-to"?

Japanese ML which I belong to is often use Reply-to.
ML adress, in the case of Lyx ML; lyx-users@lists.lyx.org, should be set
as Reply-to.

Best regards,

T Shiihara

May I ask, you really use filters to sort incoming emails to local folders?
Sorting incomming emails from the LyX list to a folder LyX for example?

Or do you just use filters in the meaning of highlighting mails by subjects?

I would think that english isn't the native language of many people on this
list. So the problem you are facing is the same for us, at least for me.
And I'm a non native speaker when I am more than 50km from home due to the
fact that frisian [1] is spoken only in a local region here in germany.
So I'm a non-native speaking native german. :-))

Thomas

[1] Frisian is a regional language spoken in the coastal region of the dutch
sea from the island Terschelling in the Netherlands over the coastal region
of northern Germany up to the island Ameland in Denmark.
