Re: Non standard document classes
Hi Tom When I used elsart.cls, I ran mktexlsr at elsart.cls installed directory as root. I also did Lyx reconfigure. At least my environment; vine Linux3.2, Lyx became to handle elsart.cls. Regards, Takashi -- I must be dreaming , or going out of my mind?

(The layout file determines how LyX displays docs in that class, what environments exist, etc.) Unless someone has a layout file for your new class, you'll need to create one yourself. There's some info on how to do it in the documentation, and you might also have a look at http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Layouts. /Paul

I was not talking about the Path envVar when I wrote: Do you have a CYGWIN environment variable such as CYGWIN=ntsec? If so, remove it, then try again. Right-click on My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment variables check on user and system for an environment variable that has cygwin in the specification. This can happen if someone else has used the computer besides you. There are several environmental variables besides the Path displayed under Environmental variables. Do you see Cygwin mentioned? How large is your msys-1.0.dll file? 791,368 new-msys-1.0.dll ? http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.mingw.msys The Msys directory is installed when you download and install Msys. The Winlyxinstaller doesn't download Msys, it includes the needed files. So you don't have an Msys directory. When I wrote about the Msys directory I wasn't sure at that time you didn't have that directory. I checked my system and I did not find another sh.exe or sed.exe. But I have found a cygwin1.dll, which was installed with Acronis (a disk imaging software). Renaming this file does not change the situation, when I start sh.exe. There is no CYGWIN EnvVar on my system, neither in my enviroment nor in the system environment. The msys-dll installed with lyx has the following details 16.03.2004 13:32 789.320 msys-1.0.dll I just installed msys and started sh.exe in the msys\1.0\bin directory and it shows exactly the same error message: P:\Utility\Latex\msys\1.0\bin>sh AllocationBase 0x0, BaseAddress 0x715B, RegionSize 0x4D, State 0x1 P:\Utility\Latex\msys\1.0\bin\sh.exe: *** Couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap, Win32 error 6 In the msys-installation ths msys-dll shows the same details as the on in the lyx installation (as mentioned above). I don't know how to do this in LyX, but if you're on Windows, you could install PDFCreator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator), which is a printer driver to generate PDF output, then print your document through it. It has an option to change the print resolution. I have never used it, but Multivalent claims that it is able to compress pdf files: http://multivalent.sourceforge.net/ Paul

(The layout file tells LyX how to display parts of the document in the GUI, what environments to provide, etc.) LyX ships with layouts for a quite a few common classes, and a few uncommon ones, but not the two you listed. There's a section in the documentation on how to gin up a layout file, but it's not for the faint of heart. /Paul

Also, if you have a suggestion for another way to design a good looking cv, please share. Well, for what it's worth here's one example cv, mine, using just the standard article class, the fancy headers package, horizontal lines under the headings, and the list environment. Lyx doesn't support everything in latex, there is no automatic support for new packages. You (or someone) have to write a .layout file first. Also, if you have a suggestion for another way to design a good looking cv, please share. Of course, you can use any latex package from lyx, but you have to use the tex button and enter latex commands yourself. Helge Hafting

Reducing output resolution using pdflatex?

I can't find anything in the documentation about forcing resampling of the images, can anyone share how this is done? It has to be pdflatex due to some packages I'm using. Thanks, Peter
