Sorry to raise what might be an off-topic query here. Is there any
tutorial (Lyx- or Free Software-connected) tutorial on how to prepare
your photos for offset printing? Many thanks. FN

I don't think your photos need special preparation. They should be in
high-resolution. The problem here is colour separation done properly
with correct raster angles on particular colour plate. In professional
application such as InDesign or PageMaker you can select colour
separation to Postscript and you configure raster angle for every
colour. I think this could be done in Ghostscript, but I do not know
the procedure.

Applications driving phototypesetter should be able to prepare such
separation from any colour PDF prepared for printing. If your print
service do not have phototypesetter and they try to prepare film in
laser printer it could be a large problem. Laser printers always have
0 angle raster, and if they are 1200 dpi they may poorly simulate
raster angles for 300 dpi and about 150 lpi I think.

Re: Building LyX layout for Copernicus Journals, class definition and estimate of time span?

2008-12-01 Thread Maarten Smoorenburg
Hi Uwe,

Great work! But unfortunately for me, it does not work. I have copied your
.layout file and template file into my own template and layout directories
and reconfigured a couple of times (all following you instructions in the
wiki). But the layout still does not work; error message when starting up
the copernicus.lyx layout:
* the copernicus class could not be loaded*

And still, no sign of any copernicus stuff in my 'configure.log' file. So...
there's something wrong in my LyX version (WindowsXP with MiKTeX 2.7 and
LyX 1.6)?

One more comment: I figure you reference to the
'acmsiggraph.ziphttp://publications.copernicus.org/Copernicus_LaTeX_Package.zip'
in the wiki is incorrect, as it referres to
http://publications.copernicus.org/Copernicus_LaTeX_Package.zip;.

And one other thing: I have used BiBTeX with a document with the
copernicus.cls class in TeXniCenter and it worked alright... so I am
guessing the bibtex error is not in the copernicus.cls, but has to do with
the LyX call to the class... maybe some incompatible packages?

Hope you can help me out on this!

Hello,

For a long time I valued LyX for its swiftness when typing.
Something changed recently, however and I do not

have an idea what is causing this.

When I type the letters only show up slowly on the screen. This
makes working with LyX really cumbersome.

I assumed this could have something to do with Auto Completion.
But nothing changed when I switched this feature of.

Version: LyX 1.6.0 (7 November 2008) - compiled binary on Ubuntu
8.10

Any ideas?

Regards,
seacyd

I solved it, however, without knowing what was the original cause.

Here is what I did:

1. removed the lyx ubuntu package 1.5.6 from my system (wajig remove
lyx)

2. installed the same package again (wajig install lyx) - I did want
to test with the old version to see if the slowness also occurs there.

3. I started lyx 1.5.6 everything worked fine the positive suprise
was, when I started lyx 1.6.0 the so much appreciated responsiveness
of lyx is back.

So maybe when compiling the source code some different
versions of libraries get installed then with the standard Ubuntu
package?

Regards,
seacyd

Unfortunately, this actually did not solve it.

I have found another behaviour that might be relevant for experts to
solve this:

* Large window size of lyx (e.g., full screen or maximized)
 - LyX is slow

* Make the window minimal (only show a few lines and columns) - LyX is
  fast

Thus, could it be that the library is overpowering my computer
(Intel 2.80 GHZ / 1024 RAM)?

I've used LyX on much lower powered machines, without the sort of
slowness you're reporting. It may be, though, that there's something
else that's straining your graphics subsystem, and this is making LyX
slow. What desktop are you using? Have you tried a different one, to see
if that solves the problem? Or just run LyX inside some totally minimal

A point of clarification: when I click on an equation, the math-mode

I see from the log file that the copernicus.cls is found in the directory

1.6.0 on Os X 10.5.5 Woes

2008-12-01 Thread Eberhard Lisse
Hi,

I have installed 1.6.0 on my iMinis at my practice (Obstetrics and
Gynaecologist) and at home, both are 10.5.5 updated to current.

Whenever I open a document (new or previously saved), LyX doesn't
remember the previous window state, it's always small(ish) and
there are three toolbars, one in each line. I can move the third
one onto the second one (to the right), but whenever I open the
or another document there are three toolbars again.

I also like to move toolbar (table) below the text to the top right
(it only appears when the table button is clicked) but it doesn't
remain there.

Whenever I open more than one documents a new window is opened
(small, as above) instead of the previous behavior, as a second
tab into the first window (which 1.5.7 does).

CMD-Return does not do anything for me, when it used to insert the
red newline. There was an even weirder issue within a table the
other day which I can't reproduce at the moment, I'll report if
and when I can :-)-O.

All in all it makes work at the practice so impossible that I have
had to switch back to 1.5.7 for the time being, but I'll continue to
play with 1.6.0 at home.

And I need 1.5.7 for Ubuntu 8.04.1 (because that's what runs on my
little eeePC which I use to write my reports in the OR) but can't
find it. Makes things even more difficult for me when I sync the
directories and try to read a file written at the office.

I am, at present thinking of trying to compile 1.5.7 on 8.04.1 and
copying the binary over the old one, but don't know how this messes
with the package manager. (Probably would laso have to pull the
source package of the current one so that all dependencies are
satisfied)

I'm quite sure that will solve itself over time but I need it now
:-)-O

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
some of these problems sound familiar. I didn't have the window size
problem, but did lose the newline shortcut. To get it back, you may
just need to look at the dialog LyX Preferences Editing
Shortcuts and find newline-insert - if there is no shortcut next
to that entry, just modify it. If that doesn't work, there may be a
conflict with a custom bind file that should exist in the directory

~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/bind
(the top of the Shortcuts dialog just mentioned tells you what bind
file you're currently using). The conflict would arise because the
function newline-insert was previously named break-line. So if
you have the old command in a custom bind file, you may have to
remove it.

Regarding the window size problem, there could be similar issues with
a custom default.ui file in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/
ui/. You could try removing any old files you may have there, and
start customizing from scratch.

Hope this helps,
Jens

There are a number of session management bugs in Mac, some of them will

In Preferences/LookFeel/User Interface:

1) Click on 'Clear all Session...'

Then copy the file /usr/share/lyx/ui/default.ui (or in

X session.

I will simply answer myself :) Running reconfigure is not enough, I should
have read http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/German this page first to learn that
I have to go to Tools -> TeX Information and search for the desired
bibliography style there. This also works for LaTeX classes and other custom
additions to the TeX tree. Now everything is fine.

* "the copernicus class could not be loaded"*

And still, no sign of any copernicus stuff in my 'configure.log' file. So...
there's something wrong in my LyX version (WindowsXP with MiKTeX 2.7 and
LyX 1.6)?

One more comment: I figure you reference to the
'acmsiggraph.zip'
in the wiki is incorrect, as it referres to "
http://publications.copernicus.org/Copernicus_LaTeX_Package.zip;.

I assumed this could have something to do with "Auto Completion".

3. I started lyx 1.5.6 everything worked fine & the positive suprise
was, when I started lyx 1.6.0 the so much appreciated responsiveness
of lyx is back.

 -> LyX is slow

* Make the window minimal (only show a few lines and columns) -> LyX is

X session.

Macros and Parent/Child Documents in 1.6

2008-12-01 Thread James Sutherland
I have a parent document where I have defined macros. In the child
document, I have used the macro.

The compiled output (either from the child, or the parent), is fine.
However, the LyX preview for the equations using macros is not
correct. The macros are not expanded when the preview is generated.

I thought that this was supported in LyX 1.6 (macros defined in
parent, used in child). Am I mistaken?

Dear all,

I don't know how to report this as a bug.

I get very frequent crashes in lyx 1.6. (I use win-xp).

Output says LyX SIGSEGV signal caught.
LyX shuts down on its own, without saving my work.

Happens when:
Many times when I write in math equations.
And also happened a few times when I shift the tool bars to different
positions.

Do others have this problem?

Thanks, Erez

A point of clarification: when I click on an equation, the math-mode
preview is correct (the macro is properly expanded). It is the
displayed equation in LyX, after exiting math mode, that is incorrect
(the macro is not expanded).

The standard installer doesn't change this setting. MiKTeX's default is

downloaded the latest acmsiggraph latex files and installed them in Miktex, and
copied the acmsiggraph.layout file into the lyx layouts direct, ran reconfigure.

Now a new document class shows up "article (ACM SIGGRAPH"). When I set this as
my document type and try to view the output, using either pdf or dvi, I get the
following latex error messages:

Errors:

Undefined control sequence.
You can't use '\relax' after \the

Description:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., '\hobx'), type 'I' and the correct
speelling (e.g., 'I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was defined.

No pdf or dvi file ever gets generated.

If I use the article document class then everything works fine, including the
bibliography. Of course then it's not in the format I want.

Thanks for your comments. Here are further system details:

Xubuntu 8.10 with xserver-common version: 2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3
Usually, I use XFCE4 version: 4.4.2.1, I tried it now also with openbox
after Richard Hecks's tip. It was a little bit faster though, but still
not usable.

Graphics card is coming with the mainboard 865G chipset (integrated
graphic).

The problem is only happening for LyX 1.6.0. LyX 1.5.6 works as
expected on the same system.

FYI, I filed a bug report:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5582
A similar faulty situation seems to occur at
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5524

Because you don't use babel. The infinite loop is caused by a bug in copernicus regarding the babel
package. babel is one of the very basic packages and every other package must be able to handle it.
I'll inform the authors of copernicus.

I see from the log file that the copernicus.cls is found in the directory
you indicated in the wiki. So there's is something wrong with the
reconfiguring of LyX, as copernicus is not mentioned in the config.lst file
of my LyX installation.

Then it seems that you have another copernicus.layout file on your computer. To test this out, copy
my layout file to the same folder where you have stored my copernicus.lyx example file. Then
reconfigure LyX again and try to process the copernicus.lyx.

Now it must work as LyX then use the right layout file.

Breaking long URL?

2008-12-01 Thread Peter Baumgartner
Hi,

How to break URL at non-letters without hyphen? I've turned on HyperRef
Support on and also checked the box "break link over lines" but still the
URLs do not break.

Breaking of URLs works for me in the bibliography with biblatex but not with
the normal bibtex bibliography. And in both cases it does not work within

I've tried "breaklinks=true" in the option line of the PDF feature dialog
but without success.

I'm using BibDesk.app to edit and manage my biblatex files, and have a

CMD-Return does not do anything for me, when it used to insert the
"red" newline.

To get it back, you may
just need to look at the dialog "LyX Preferences > Editing >
Shortcuts" and find "newline-insert" - if there is no shortcut next
to that entry, just modify it. If that doesn't work, there may be a
conflict with a custom bind file that should exist in the directory

~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/bind
(the top of the Shortcuts dialog just mentioned tells you what bind
file you're currently using). The conflict would arise because the
function "newline-insert" was previously named "break-line". So if
you have the old command in a custom bind file, you may have to
remove it.

Regarding the window size problem, there could be similar issues with
a custom default.ui file in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/
ui/. You could try removing any old files you may have there, and
start customizing from scratch.

Hope this helps,
Jens

Hello Eberhard,

There are a number of session management bugs in Mac, some of them will
be fixed in 1.6.1. There is a work-around your problem though:

In Preferences/Look/User Interface:

1) Click on 'Clear all Session...'
2) Uncheck 'Allow saving/restoring...'
3) optionally Uncheck 'Open documents in tabs

Then copy the file /usr/share/lyx/ui/default.ui (or in
/usr/local/share/) in your local directory '~/.lyx/ui/' and modify it
following your taste. You may also need to copy the other files in the
global 'lyx/ui/' directory.
