update doesn't work
Hi! I've seen this before with LyX 1.6.5 on Mac OS X but never reported it. Now, working with LyX 2.0.0 alpha3, I have the same problem: View works fine, but I've never got Update working. I've to close the current view (whatever PDF viewer I am using, Adobe or Skim, for instance), to get an updated view. Please, am I missing something obvious? Thanks! Hi Ricardo, If you'd find it helpful, I've been working on a book appendix that compares some of the most common LaTeX document classes. It shows examples, and goes over their more common features. It's still in draft form, but I would be happy to provide a download link if you think it would be helpful. If so, just send me a private message. It's a little bit too big to send over emails. So, please, could you advice me on what Document class I must use to edit a problems book? This decision is not as momentous as you might think. It's generally pretty easy to change from one class to another, within reason, e.g., from one book class to another. Going from book to article is a bit more of a challenge, because you lose chapters and so have to choose new layouts for them. But that's about it. So: Do you need Chapters? If so, start with Book; if not, start with Article. If you want to know about the difference between the various book classes, then you can look at the koma-script docs (scrguien.pdf) for those, at the memoir docs, etc. All of these have lots of flexibility, but you may or may not need it. It will accompany a Quantitative Genetics essay. It will include text paragraphs presenting the problems by themselves, each of them composed of several parts. After each part, some text paragraphs explaining the theoretical basis of the proposed solution will appear followed by the solution by itself that will include numbered mathematical formulas (they will be cross-referenced in the text) and some more text explaining the reasoning. What I definitely WILL suggest is that you spend a bit of time creating character styles, or paragraph layouts, for these different sorts of things (Problem, Basis, Solution). This will allow you to apply a consistent format across your book. It will take work to get it right---you'll want to study chapter 5 of the customization manual, and you'll need to learn a little LaTeX (or else just ask questions)---but you do not have to do this work now and can mess with it over time. I'm attaching a trivial module that does nothing but define those three layouts, give them pretty labels, and make them do nothing special. Use them now; define their behavior later. The formatted reference and the" On Page" do not work, but we have been knowing that for weeks. Re: Package installation question
On 05/20/2010 07:38 AM, Artimess wrote: Could someone tell me: 1) Where does Lyx stores the packages in Mac, Linux, and Windows if they are different? If by "package" you mean "LaTeX package", then the answer is: LyX doesn't store LaTeX packages or even have much to do with them. That is entirely a LaTeX issue, and the answer will therefore depend upon which TeX distribution you are using and how you have it configured. Plus, TeX can store packages in lots of locations. E.g., on my system, I have packages under /usr/share/texmf/, /usr/local/share/texmf/, and $HOME/texmf/, which is pretty normal. If on the other hand by "package" you mean "LyX layout file or module", then the answer is, yes, it is different on different OSs and, to make it more complex still, you can select your user directory using a command line option "-userdir". On Linux, though, the user directory defaults to $HOME/.lyx/. I don't know what it is on Mac or Windows. 2) Should I do anything special to install a package beyond moving it to the right directory and do a reconfigure? Please see chapter 5 of the Customization manual. 3) How can I check if a package is available or installed? If it's a LaTeX package, try Help>TeX Info, or just use the TeX tools for checking this, e.g., on *nix: kpsewhich mypackage.sty. 4) Are the commands of the installed new package visible to Lyx front-end and one can select them through menu bar? or should we use ERT for them? Unless LyX knows about this package, then its commands will not be available. You can tell LyX about the commands using a module, for some things. See e.g. the endnotes.module file that ships with LyX for an example. Richard
[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.6.6 is released
Public release of LyX version 1.6.6 === We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.6.6. This is the sixth maintenance release in the 1.6.x series. The release features a long list of fixes and improvements. Yet a number of crashes, reported by our users or our automatic stability testing program, were fixed. Moreover, LyX was improved in many details. It also introduces new features, such as support for the enchant spell checking backend and for aspell language varieties (such as old and new German spelling in parallel). A detailed list of changes is appended below, remaining known problems are listed in the file RELEASE-NOTES. Please note particularly that there's an unresolved bug (#6680) that might crash LyX when using undo with the outliner opened. This bug only manifests itself when LyX is compiled against Qt 4.6, so we encourage you to compile LyX against Qt 4.5, if possible. Also note that LyX 1.6.6 behaves way better with Qt 4.6 than its predecessors. So despite the aforementioned problem, we urge all distributors who use Qt 4.6 to upgrade to this version. All users are encouraged to upgrade to this version. In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject: LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It is released under a Free Software/Open Source license. LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good. On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output -- or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating' your dissertation the evening before going to press. LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux, the Macintosh and modern Windows platforms. You can download LyX 1.6.6 here (the .bz2 are compressed with bzip2, which yields smaller files): ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.bz2 ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.6.6.tar.bz2 and it should propagate shortly to the following mirrors (which will also host the .bz2 versions): ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz http://lyx.cybermirror.org/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/publishing/tex/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/X11/LyX/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/unix/editors/lyx/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz http://lyx.mirror.fr/stable/1.6.x/lyx-1.6.6.tar.gz Prebuilt binaries (rpms for Linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows installers) should soon be available at: ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.6/ If you already have the sources of the previous release (1.6.4.2), you may want to apply one of the following patches instead: ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/patch-1.6.6.gz ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/1.6.x/patch-1.6.6.bz2 If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.6.6, you may either e-mail the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel lists.lyx.org), or open a bug report at http://www.lyx.org/trac/ If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question, first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/. If you can't find the answer there, e-mail the LyX users' list (lyx-users lists.lyx.org). Enjoy! The LyX team. What's new in version 1.6.6? ** Updates: *** * DOCUMENT INPUT/OUTPUT - LyX now supports SVG images when either the librsvg library or Inkscape (version 0.47 recommended) is installed (bug 3349). - LaTeX import (tex2lyx) now recognizes the types of quotes dependent on the document language. (When importing e.g. a Spanish document, LyX will use comillas latinas as quotes.) - Add support for Aspell language varieties. This enables proper support of German old and new spelling in parallel when "aspell (library)" is used (bug 4657). - Add support for the enchant spellchecker (bug 6226). LyX needs to be compiled --with-enchant in order to use this feature. * USER INTERFACE - Checking all opened files for external change after updating from SVN repository (part of bug 5211). - Add a Close All menu item to the menu (bug 740).
Package installation question
Could someone tell me: 1) Where does Lyx stores the packages in Mac, Linux, and Windows if they are different? 2) Should I do anything special to install a package beyond moving it to the right directory and do a reconfigure? 3) How can I check if a package is available or installed? 4) Are the commands of the installed new package visible to Lyx front-end and one can select them through menu bar? or should we use ERT for them? Re: Any possible way to have clickable table of contents when exporting to PDF?
Hello, Thanks for your help, it started working. I was almost going to givup. Here is what I did: Document -> Settings -> PDF Properties Then I checked almost everything, to be sure I would see if any of these feature has some effect. Then, I hit the "Save as Document Defaults" button. I think this button made all of these options being activated. Then Ok button then Close button. I exported to PDF using pdflatex facility. Then, my PDF have all these sexy features. :) Regards, F. Olivier Ripoll wrote: Francois Berenger wrote: Hello, I played with this option without any effect. At least, with pdflatex and ps2pdf, the TOC is made with clickable links here (LyX 1.6.5, WinXP) (you need to check the "use hyperref support" box). However, I would advise you to use pdf bookmarks instead of a clickable TOC. They are always available, while the TOC needs you to come back to its page. Of course you may use both, but to impress your colleagues, the pdf bookmarks on the sides are much better. That in the same settings place, on the "Bookmarks" tab.
