I do not know the exact path on windows (it might depend on the actual 
installation), but if you open Help  About LyX, the information on the 
Version pane contains two paths, Library directory and User directory. 
The latter is it. You need to put the layout files in a layout subdirectory 
in that path (create it if it's not there yet).

Do not forget to issue Tools  Reconfigure after you added a new layout.

This advice is also on the wiki, see

As far as the wiki is concerned: this is a user-driven platform, so everybody

LyX and DeTeXor

Hi !

I have been a happy Lyx user for 6 months now, but this morning I discovered on 
Macupdate (http://www.macupdate.com/) a software called DeTeXor 2.4 that claims 
to move useless byproducts of TeX file compilations to Trash.

I was not aware of garbage files with TeX. How far LyX users are concerned ?

These are probably the log files and the auxiliary files. Useless is 
certainly a matter of interpretation. These files are useful, but they are 
usually not needed anymore after the production of the PDF/DVI file finished.

You do not need such a utility with LyX. LyX does the compilation in a 
temporary directory, which is deleted when you end the session.

document directory: directory where the document resides.
(e.g. /home/username/Documents/Papers/2007/)

 Which is it?  Where exactly should .layout files be located? 

If a layout file is used for just one document, it can be placed
alongside this document in the document folder.

If a layout file is used by just one user, it should be placed under the
user directory (LyX user dir/layouts/)

If a layout fils is used by all users on the system, it should be
placed under the LyX dir).

Yes, we can probably do that. But that means we need to re-generate the aux 
file as soon as a LyX file is modified (IOW almost always).

Changed aux file can also affect _prior_ children. Consider child1 contains a 
page reference to child2, where the page number was 99. Due to an update of 
child2, this page has become 100. This might affect the line-breaking and 
page breaking in child1, which itself might affect the counters of child1.

This is just one example. I think the only reliable way to maintain counter 
correctness is to run LaTeX on the whole document again.

Translating theorem-like statements

Dear list members,

I am struggling a little to get my theorem headers translated into
French. The problem is twofold:

For printed documents, I can't get the full benefit of the modules features 
as if I load,
e.g. Theorems (AMS), the headers come out in English (not
surprisingly, also in English in the LyX window). So I have to revert to
ERT and \newtheorem in the preamble.

But I'll need to use Beamer int the next months, so I made some tests. I
choose File - New with template - fr_beamer-conference-ornate-20min.lyx.
No module needs to be loaded to get theorem, corollary,... in the
drop-down box. They appear in French, as well as in the LyX window.
Alas, they preview in English.

I have reviewed the post on April, 22, 2009 by Michael Solis Chacon and the 
reply by 
Ignacio García, but I was unable to get it working: I did translate
the .modules and .inc files, but I don't know how to make LyX use them.

I'd appreciate if someone had a workaround. TIA - regards,

So, if you are very, very brave and willing to put up with some issues, 
you might try it for this purpose.

I experienced the same when trying to write ó: after numerous trials, LyX
eventually outputs the correct accented letter, but at the expense of
repeatedly hitting keys, sometimes simultaneously. This is truely annoying I
admit.

When I write fast in the keyboard, I press a key before releasing the last
one, and the letters are written correctly. However, in the case of writing
accents (dead key in a Spanish keyboard), Lyx ignores the accent. Other
programs behave correctly, and they write the accents. So, in order to
reproduce the bug in Lyx, you can do the following in a document:

Press N key
Press accent key (´)
Release N key
Press A key
Release accent key
Release A key

The output in Lyx is: na
The output in other programs is: ná

I've checked that the problem occurs in LyX 1.6.6 and 1.6.5 in Windows XP
(32 and 64 bits). This problem in very annoying, because you skip lots of
accents when you write fast.

Powerpoint can be a real pain with old presentations though.  It can
fail to open some older versions - bad choice admittedly by those who
chose to leave useful info in powerpoint.  I thought I would create
pdfs of some old presentations saved at work and found it was too
late.
Finger painters also wreck your ability to re-use old slides or update
presentations to new templates

but I digress since this is the lyx list.

I think those hints need to be revised. They list this:

\let\oldfoot\footnote

What they forget is this, which is often very necessary because every 
environment has its own end environment:

\let\endoldfoot\endfootnote

Without that, an environment whose end part actually does something will 
either do the wrong thing or fail. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

Also, the hint above works well if you want the new functionality to come 
before the original, after the original, or both. Where if fails is if you 
want to insert something in the middle of the original.

I'm trying to join the Beamer-LaTeX mailing list in order to find a solution 
to this problem. As you correctly pointed out, there's no obvious way to use 
\vskip within either \logo or \footer -- it won't compile. Unfortunately it's 
a very hard list to join (yeah, I know that's weird).

You've identified a serious shortcoming of Beamer, and I'm trying very hard to 
find a way around it, because I plan on using Beamer a lot.

To be honest, I not much of a beta-tester... I am only using version
1.6.5 because it's in the repositories for Ubuntu Lucid.

downloaded them. I reviewed each of them, replacing the Spanish
translations by the French ones. Then, I placed the modified files in

I expected LyX to use them automatically, but I must be missing some
point.

Did you reconfigure and restart LyX after installing the translated versions?

 You need to put \setbeameroption{show notes} in the preamble. The default
 is to hide notes in presentation mode, and apparently that carries over to
 handout mode as well.


But  \setbeameroption{show notes} doesn't work in article mode?? There is
any other solution??

LyX and DeTeXor

I have been a happy Lyx user for 6 months now, but this morning I discovered on 
Macupdate (http://www.macupdate.com/) a software called DeTeXor 2.4 that claims 
to move useless byproducts of TeX file compilations to Trash.

I was not aware of garbage files with TeX. How far LyX users are concerned ?

These are probably the log files and the auxiliary files. Useless is 
certainly a matter of interpretation. These files are useful, but they are 
usually not needed anymore after the production of the PDF/DVI file finished.

You do not need such a utility with LyX. LyX does the compilation in a 
temporary directory, which is deleted when you end the session.

(e.g. /home/username/Documents/Papers/2007/)

 Which is it?  Where exactly should .layout files be located? 

If a layout file is used for just one document, it can be placed
alongside this document in the document folder.

If a layout file is used by just one user, it should be placed under the
user directory (LyX user dir/layouts/)

If a layout fils is used by all users on the system, it should be
placed under the LyX dir).

Yes, we can probably do that. But that means we need to re-generate the aux 
file as soon as a LyX file is modified (IOW almost always).

Changed aux file can also affect _prior_ children. Consider child1 contains a 
page reference to child2, where the page number was 99. Due to an update of 
child2, this page has become 100. This might affect the line-breaking and 
page breaking in child1, which itself might affect the counters of child1.

This is just one example. I think the only reliable way to maintain counter 
correctness is to run LaTeX on the whole document again.

Translating theorem-like statements

Dear list members,

I am struggling a little to get my theorem headers translated into
French. The problem is twofold:

For printed documents, I can't get the full benefit of the modules features 
as if I load,
e.g. Theorems (AMS), the headers come out in English (not
surprisingly, also in English in the LyX window). So I have to revert to
ERT and \newtheorem in the preamble.

But I'll need to use Beamer int the next months, so I made some tests. I
choose File - New with template - fr_beamer-conference-ornate-20min.lyx.
No module needs to be loaded to get theorem, corollary,... in the
drop-down box. They appear in French, as well as in the LyX window.
Alas, they preview in English.

I have reviewed the post on April, 22, 2009 by Michael Solis Chacon and the 
reply by 
Ignacio García, but I was unable to get it working: I did translate
the .modules and .inc files, but I don't know how to make LyX use them.

I'd appreciate if someone had a workaround. TIA - regards,

Here's the good news: LyX 2.0 handles this sort of thing automatically. 
So, if you are very, very brave and willing to put up with some issues, 
you might try it for this purpose.

I experienced the same when trying to write ó: after numerous trials, LyX
eventually outputs the correct accented letter, but at the expense of
repeatedly hitting keys, sometimes simultaneously. This is truely annoying I
admit.

When I write fast in the keyboard, I press a key before releasing the last
one, and the letters are written correctly. However, in the case of writing
accents (dead key in a Spanish keyboard), Lyx ignores the accent. Other
programs behave correctly, and they write the accents. So, in order to
reproduce the bug in Lyx, you can do the following in a document:

Press N key
Press accent key (´)
Release N key
Press A key
Release accent key
Release A key

The output in Lyx is: na
The output in other programs is: ná

I've checked that the problem occurs in LyX 1.6.6 and 1.6.5 in Windows XP
(32 and 64 bits). This problem in very annoying, because you skip lots of
accents when you write fast.

Powerpoint can be a real pain with old presentations though.  It can
fail to open some older versions - bad choice admittedly by those who
chose to leave useful info in powerpoint.  I thought I would create
pdfs of some old presentations saved at work and found it was too
late.
Finger painters also wreck your ability to re-use old slides or update
presentations to new templates

but I digress since this is the lyx list.

I think those hints need to be revised. They list this:

\let\oldfoot\footnote

What they forget is this, which is often very necessary because every 
environment has its own end environment:

\let\endoldfoot\endfootnote

Without that, an environment whose end part actually does something will 
either do the wrong thing or fail. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

Also, the hint above works well if you want the new functionality to come 
before the original, after the original, or both. Where if fails is if you 
want to insert something in the middle of the original.

I'm trying to join the Beamer-LaTeX mailing list in order to find a solution 
to this problem. As you correctly pointed out, there's no obvious way to use 
\vskip within either \logo or \footer -- it won't compile. Unfortunately it's 
a very hard list to join (yeah, I know that's weird).

You've identified a serious shortcoming of Beamer, and I'm trying very hard to 
find a way around it, because I plan on using Beamer a lot.

To be honest, I not much of a beta-tester... I am only using version
1.6.5 because it's in the repositories for Ubuntu Lucid.

translations by the French ones. Then, I placed the modified files in

Did you reconfigure and restart LyX after installing the translated versions?

 You need to put \setbeameroption{show notes} in the preamble. The default
 is to hide notes in presentation mode, and apparently that carries over to
 handout mode as well.


But  \setbeameroption{show notes} doesn't work in article mode?? There is
any other solution??

I do not know the exact path on windows (it might depend on the actual 
installation), but if you open Help > About LyX, the information on the 
"Version" pane contains two paths, "Library directory" and "User directory". 
The latter is it. You need to put the layout files in a "layout" subdirectory 
in that path (create it if it's not there yet).

Do not forget to issue Tools > Reconfigure after you added a new layout.

As far as the wiki is concerned: this is a user-driven platform, so everybody 
is invited to correct errors.

LyX and DeTeXor

Hi !

I have been a happy Lyx user for 6 months now, but this morning I discovered on 
Macupdate (http://www.macupdate.com/) a software called DeTeXor 2.4 that claims 
to "move useless byproducts of TeX file compilations to Trash".

I was not aware of garbage files with TeX. How far LyX users are concerned ?

These are probably the log files and the auxiliary files. "Useless" is 
certainly a matter of interpretation. These files are useful, but they are 
usually not needed anymore after the production of the PDF/DVI file finished.

You do not need such a utility with LyX. LyX does the compilation in a 
temporary directory, which is deleted when you end the session.

This might be a symbolic link (don't know what this is called in
Windows) to the system wide layouts folder. 

Place the *.layout file(s) in

 < c:\users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\LyX16\layouts\>

(create this directory if necessary).

user directory: Place where LyX looks for user-specific files
(e.g. /home/username/.lyx/)

document directory: directory where the document resides.

alongside this document in the document folder.

If a layout file is used by just one user, it should be placed under the

I suppose we can compare modification times of the corresponding *.lyx
and *aux files and regenerate them only if there are changes.

As changed page or section numbers affect subsequent sub-documents, *.aux
regeneration must be done for all sub-documents from the changed one to
the current one.

Example:

  * parent.lyx includes child1.lyx, child2.lyx, ... , child5.lyx
  
  * child2.lyx is newer than child2.aux
  
  Compiling child4.lyx with "includeonly" requires update of
  child2.aux and child3.aux. 
  -> run latex with "includeonly child2",
 run latex with "includeonly child3",
 run latex with "includeonly child4" (possibly several times)

I suppose the OP will prefer manual updating (or probably incorrect

Yes, we can probably do that. But that means we need to re-generate the aux 
file as soon as a LyX file is modified (IOW almost always).

Changed aux file can also affect _prior_ children. Consider child1 contains a 
page reference to child2, where the page number was "99". Due to an update of 
child2, this page has become "100". This might affect the line-breaking and 
page breaking in child1, which itself might affect the counters of child1.

This is just one example. I think the only reliable way to maintain counter 
correctness is to run LaTeX on the whole document again.

Translating theorem-like statements

Dear list members,

I am struggling a little to get my theorem headers translated into
French. The problem is twofold:

For printed documents, I can't get the full benefit of the "modules" features 
as if I load,
e.g. "Theorems (AMS)", the headers come out in English (not
surprisingly, also in English in the LyX window). So I have to revert to
ERT and \newtheorem in the preamble.

But I'll need to use Beamer int the next months, so I made some tests. I
choose File - New with template - fr_beamer-conference-ornate-20min.lyx.
No module needs to be loaded to get "theorem", "corollary",... in the
drop-down box. They appear in French, as well as in the LyX window.
Alas, they preview in English.

I have reviewed the post on April, 22, 2009 by Michael Solis Chacon and the 
reply by 
Ignacio García, but I was unable to get it working: I did translate
the .modules and .inc files, but I don't know how to make LyX use them.

I'd appreciate if someone had a workaround. TIA - regards,

Here's the good news: LyX 2.0 handles this sort of thing automatically. 
So, if you are very, very brave and willing to put up with some issues, 
you might try it for this purpose.

I experienced the same when trying to write "ó": after numerous trials, LyX
eventually outputs the correct accented letter, but at the expense of
repeatedly hitting keys, sometimes simultaneously. This is truely annoying I
admit.

When I write fast in the keyboard, I press a key before releasing the last
one, and the letters are written correctly. However, in the case of writing
accents (dead key in a Spanish keyboard), Lyx ignores the accent. Other
programs behave correctly, and they write the accents. So, in order to
reproduce the bug in Lyx, you can do the following in a document:

Press N key
Press accent key (´)
Release N key
Press A key
Release accent key
Release A key

The output in Lyx is: na
The output in other programs is: ná

I've checked that the problem occurs in LyX 1.6.6 and 1.6.5 in Windows XP
(32 and 64 bits). This problem in very annoying, because you skip lots of
accents when you write fast.

Powerpoint can be a real pain with old presentations though.  It can

I think those hints need to be revised. They list this:

\let\oldfoot\footnote

What they forget is this, which is often very necessary because every 
environment has its own "end" environment:

\let\endoldfoot\endfootnote

Without that, an environment whose "end" part actually does something will 
either do the wrong thing or fail. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

Also, the hint above works well if you want the new functionality to come 
before the original, after the original, or both. Where if fails is if you 
want to insert something in the middle of the original.

I'm trying to join the Beamer-LaTeX mailing list in order to find a solution 
to this problem. As you correctly pointed out, there's no obvious way to use 
\vskip within either \logo or \footer -- it won't compile. Unfortunately it's 
a very hard list to join (yeah, I know that's weird).

You've identified a serious shortcoming of Beamer, and I'm trying very hard to 
find a way around it, because I plan on using Beamer a lot.

To be honest, I not much of a beta-tester... I am only using version
1.6.5 because it's in the repositories for Ubuntu Lucid.

translations by the French ones. Then, I placed the modified files in

Did you reconfigure and restart LyX after installing the translated versions?
