Re: A basic requested feature
Hey LyX developers! As in MS (boo!) Office, when saving a new file, whatever appears in the \title section should automatically be guessed as the name that the file should be saved as. In principle, I could live with proposing the title as the file name. That sort of makes sense if you are used to create documents with short meaningful titles. However, the titles in my case are usually 2 lines long and it's way too clumsy to use that as the file name. I can see the use case here, but I don't know yet how I can prevent from getting it annoy me by proposing file names that are way too long. I absolutely do not want LyX to use the first line of the doc. I imagine I will end up with tons of documents with nonsense names. Then I'd rather have newfile1...newfile100. If I don't care enough to give them a proper name they probably can be marked as to-be-removed. I would encourage people to think a few seconds how to call their documents. LyX Outline
Hello LyXers, I'm trying to use LyX to outline a paper I'm working on, and though I'm generally very satisfied with the way it works I'm coming across one little problem. When I open the outline window LyX cuts off all of the names of my sections, subsections, and paragraphs after 38 characters. Does anyone know if there's a way to allow the outline window to print out more characters? Moreover, someone I've been corresponding with through a LyX user forum has suggested that this might be a bug. Is anyone aware of whether it is indeed a bug, or just a setting somewhere in the program? I'm running OSX Leopard (10.5.8) and LyX 2.0.0rc2. Any help would be greatly appreciated! That view is really intended more as a navigation tool than as an outline in the sense you mean. You can use LyX to construct outlines, of course, but that would all happen in the main window. Re: A basic requested feature
You loose. LyX adds a number. It was just an example. If LyX adds an ID or not, it doesn't really matter. There is no link between the number and the contents of the document. If not for complete rejection, so at least to priorize on what is important. You're right. But I'm not trying to convince this is the most important feature. I am just telling this is a good feature. I absolutely do not want LyX to use the first line of the doc. I imagine I will end up with tons of documents with nonsense names. Then I'd rather have newfile1...newfile100. If I don't care enough to give them a proper name they probably can be marked as to-be-removed. You're not the only one that write papers with very long titles (I also do the same). But other softwares that suggest a filename (like MS Word) does not have problems with this right? Of course LyX will need to handle these things (limit the filename, remove illegal characters, and other things as well). This is not a big concern. You're right that sometimes we don't care to give good names for our files just because they are to-be-removed files. But I'm sure you do care to open various files to find something just because you decided to not give a proper filename in the past. I would encourage people to think a few seconds how to call their documents. That will save some time in searching for them later on. You get the point! And how can LyX aid users to achieve this? Yes, you guessed right! Proposing filenames! The title is easy to get, but in a higher level of discussion we may also want to discuss if the title/first sentence/etc is the better string to get. Maybe some info based on the master document or the document structure? (as Chapter-5, Appendix, etc). I dunno. There are lots of things to consider and this basic requested feature could be improved to a most wanted feature. Of course everybody is welcome to make suggestions and put forward ideas on functionality. But it does not mean that everything gets implemented; it needs to be realistic and accepted by the community of users and developers. You're absolutely right. Someone may suggest that we include an embedded SVG editor in LyX. Of course it would be handy, but before implement it we need to talk if does make sense, given the difficuties to implement. how important and desired the feature is, if there alternatives, and so on. However, we are not talking about an embedded SVG editor and nobody is saying this feature should be implemented independent of the community opinion. I am just trying to defend that this idea is good. Re: LyX Outline
Wrong tool. To outline LyX documents you need VimOutliner (http://www.vimoutliner.net). Much faster outlining, much more useful outlining. Then, when your outline is done, you can convert it to LyX. Attached is the conversion tool I use, along with a sample level-environment- table file. It spits out LyX code out stdout, you capture that in a file, and paste it into a dummy LyX file. That gives you your outline in the proper LyX environments. I've used VimOutliner to outline the following books: * Troubleshooting Techniques of the Successful Technologist ( 100,000 words) * Manager's Guide to Technical Troubleshooting * Rapid Learning for the 21st Century * Troubleshooting: Just the Facts * Learn Vim Tonight * Quit Joblessness: Start Your Own Business * Thriving in Tough Times ( 85,000 words) * My new so far untitled book due in May ( 100,000 words) VimOutliner's the only outlining tool I've seen fast enough to keep up with my mental activities, so I never forget an idea while messing with my outliner. I can't imagine outlining a book using any other software.
A few suggestions for fixes in LyX 2.0
I have very much enjoyed using LyX 2.0! Thanks to the development team for your efforts! A few minor things that I have found recently regarding forward/reverse PDF search on Mac with Skim: In section 5.6 of Additional.lyx on the Skim directions for reverse search, there is a problem with the status quo. It should read: Skim-Preferences-Sync choose 'custom' preset and enter command /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyxeditor I have not had success in getting forward search to work with Skim on Mac (using the default commands supplied with LyX for forward search with Skim). It opens a file, but does not position itself anywhere near the requested line. Can anyone duplicate this? Best wishes, James

Natbib Citation Style (\citet command) mandatory with Biblatex module and LyX 2.0 (even RC3)
Hi, In contrast to LyX 1.6, with LyX 2.0 (even RC3), when selecting the Biblatex-citation-styles module [1], the Bibliography -> Citation Style preference is forced to Natbib and all citations are set with a \citet instead of a \cite in the source code. Without the natbib=true option for biblatex in the LaTeX Preamble errors occur. The wiki documentation [1] does not mention natbib=true as a mandatory option, so has an error been introduced in the LyX 2.0 source code or should the wiki documentation merely be updated to indicate natbib=true as mandatory? Putting 'comma' ',' as Default Decimal Point the terminal writes the message: *LyX: Unknown tag `aspell' [around line 264 of file current token: 'aspell' context: '']* and the /.lyx-2.0.0rc3/preferences file writes: *# LANGUAGE SUPPORT SECTION ## # \default_decimal_point \spellchecker* And View>PDF gives LaTeX Error: *Undefined control sequence ...@{\extracolsep{0pt}\spellchecker}l|c|c|c|}* Opening again the Preferences>Language Settings>Language>Default Decimal Point the box shows a backslash sign '\' . Setting the decimal point manually in Table Setting>More the output turn on right. Regards Ignacio García
Re: Translations of Math environments in LyX output - last call for LyX 2.0
Ok, Pavel. With RC3, everything seems to be working with the translations of theorem environments to brazilian portuguese. I'll let you know should anything untoward happens... Thanks a lot for your effort! Shortcut for "math-delim Vert Vert" not working
I put this in my user.bind: \bind "M-m M-m S-Bar" "math-delim Vert Vert" This was actually auto-generated by adding a new shortcut in Tools > Preferences. But after closing and going back to that Preferences dialog, instead of "Shift-|" I see "Shift-" followed by an (Asian?) Unicode character. After looking at the built-in math.bind I changed the above to: \bind "M-m M-m ~C-~M-~S-bar" "math-delim Vert Vert" This works. How come? Thanks, -- Yang Zhang http://yz.mit.edu/

TOC entry font size- memoir class
Hello again. The problem that I have is as follows: I have a TOC whose entries are bolded and the chapter name font size is Large I want to de-bold and change the chapter name font size to /normalsize So, I insert \renewcommand{\cftchapterfont}{\normalsize} in the preamble. This has the effect of debolding all of the entries. Not what I expected, but I'll take it. However, the font size of the chapter name has not changed and remains Large. My question is, if "chapter" is not the K value for the chapter name entry, what is? Richard Opheim
Re: Shortcut for "math-delim Vert Vert" not working
Thanks. Yeah, using 1.6.5 (in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS). Yang Zhang wrote: > Thanks. Yeah, using 1.6.5 (in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS). heh, this must be pretty crashy version when outliner is used ubuntu never cared to bump newer version for "stability reasons" :) anyway this fix never got into 1.6, only to 2.0 somehow... pavel
A few suggestions for fixes in LyX 2.0
I have very much enjoyed using LyX 2.0! Thanks to the development team for your efforts! A few minor things that I have found recently regarding forward/reverse PDF search on Mac with Skim: In section 5.6 of "Additional.lyx" on the "Skim" directions for reverse search, there is a problem with the status quo. It should read: "Skim->Preferences->Sync choose 'custom' preset and enter command /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyxeditor" I have not had success in getting forward search to work with Skim on Mac (using the default commands supplied with LyX for forward search with Skim). It opens a file, but does not position itself anywhere near the requested line. Can anyone duplicate this? Best wishes, James
