This can be achieved by experimenting with different themes. See [1]
for some pointers.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but you should know that beamer
always expects the user to specify the beginning of a new frame.
Furthermore, LyX cannot know before-hand when a slide is full, as it
would first need to compile the entire document. However, even in this
case LyX doesn't (and possibly will never) feature the automatic
mechanisms that would allow it to spot that a slide is full, and
relies on your eyes to do that.

Dear Steve,

I have just tried to make more explicit the instructions given by Rob.
Unfortunately, I do not use Windows anymore and cannot directly test them.
As far as I do remember, establishing the connection with Sweave was rather
complex under Windows with the previous versions of Lyx, but it is supposed
to be much simpler with Lyx 2. For example, under OSX, the connection was
just out-of-the-box for me, after having included the module. For Windows, I
do not remember if I had to install RTools, but, anyway, this was before Lyx
2. In your place, I would just follow Rob's instructions, I am pretty
confident that if he has published them, they must work.

Sorry for not being more helpful. I was hoping that other WIndows users who
remember their setup for Lyx2-Sweave connection would ring the bell here.

  Dear Steve,

If I try to make a little bit more explicit these instructions by Rob:

 Here’s the process:

1. Install LyX. Use alpha6 (available from the LyX website), it’s the
most stable.
2. Install R. Available from its project’s website.
3. Install the appropriate
 RToolshttp://www.murdoch-sutherland.com/Rtools/index.htmlfor your version
 of R.
4. Copy Sweave.sty from share/texmf in the R installation directory to
some place in your LaTeX path.
5. Rebuild your LaTeX database. Reconfigure LyX.

 1. You just install the most recent version of Lyx.

 2. and 3. Check your version of R. Launch R and check the About box. Use
this information to download the correct RTools version from the wab page
 indicated by Rob.

 4. R is normally installed in Program Files\R-project if I remember well.
Locate the subfolder share under the folder of R-project (using the file
manager of WIndows), and then the folder subfolder texmf that should be in
the share folder. Copy this folder in your Miktex tree. MikTex should
normally be installed in Proram Files\Miktex and must contain a sunfolder
texmf that again contains a subfolder latex. Put the the content of the
share\texmf folder in a subfolder of this latex folder (you can create a new
folder called sweave for example and copy the files in this new folder).

 5. You have two choices here: The user-friendly one is to locate the MikTex
manager program from your Programs/Miktex menu and refresh the Latex file
index from here (one of the tabs must be about such a functionality). The
more direct one uses the Command line window (You should be able to open one
from Start/Programs/Accessories/Command... In this window just execute the
following command: mktexlsr (type mktexlsr and push the Return key). This
will read some folders and update their indexes for allowing to Latex
compiler to find the corresponding files.
Then Launch Lyx and Execute Reconfigure (please look in the menus, I do not
remember under which menu this function appears in the Window version).

I have written the paths to the relevant folders from memory, and I am not
sure to remember well since I do not use Windows anymore. I also translate
from French Windows. But if you look for the meaning of what I indicate, you
 should find your way.
Sorry for not being more precise, but I hope that this can help you in the
waiting of more precise indications from an current Windows user.

Dear Steve,

I have just checked again the explanation on the RTools package and it looks
a little bot overkill to me too, for just installing the Sweave connection
with Lyx. As far as I remember, what you need on the R side to make Sweave
work is the corresponding executables and batch files that comes with R
(check the bin folder) and the latex files that must be included in your
texmf tree. The rest of RTools seems quite spurious to me indeed. Probably,
RTools is a sufficient, but necessary solution of this problem. But, we need
a Windows user to clarify these points.

Subject: Re: lyx 2 and sweave

 Dear Steve,

If I try to make a little bit more explicit these instructions by Rob:

 Here’s the process:

Install LyX.  Use alpha6 (available from the LyX website), it’s the most
 stable.
Install R.  Available from its project’s website.
Install the appropriate RTools for your version of R.
Copy Sweave.sty from share/texmf in the R installation directory to some
 place in your LaTeX path.

 5. You have two choices here: The user-friendly one is to locate the
MikTex manager program from your Programs/Miktex menu and refresh the Latex
file index from here (one of the tabs must be about such a functionality).
The more direct one uses the Command line window (You should be able to open
one from Start/Programs/Accessories/Command... In this window just execute
the following command: mktexlsr (type mktexlsr and push the Return key).
This will read some folders and update their indexes for allowing to Latex
compiler to find the corresponding files.
Then Launch Lyx and Execute Reconfigure (please look in the menus, I do
not remember under which menu this function appears in the Window version).

I have written the paths to the relevant folders from

2011-06-13 Thread Mukhtar Ullah

Dear Lyx developers,
I have noticed two problems with LyX when run from the command prompt in
windows:

1) Typing
LyX -help

LyX --help
displays nothing. I can still use the options such as -e and so forth.
But if I forget the switches, I have lost the help.

2) Lyx does not return/display any error whatsoever. Even the does
command ERRORLEVEL returns nothing.

I really need help here, because I want to to export lyx math to a
vector graphics on the command prompt. I a script file you need at least
the error status true/false.

Best regards,

Enchant is a wrapper library for different spell checkers.
You can configure it to use Aspell if it isn't already the case.
You have to look up the Ubuntu documentation how to do this.

If you installed Aspell after LyX, have you performed a Tools

Sudden Single Spacing

I'm writing a paper in the Elsevier class, with the option review,

Hi,

I think the problem came from the explicit argument --args when
running Rscript; it should not be there. You can remove it and try
again.

Tools--Preferences--Converters; find Sweave to LaTeX (whatever);
then modify the converter (remove --args).

The presence of --args will make ls.args[4] to be ISO-8859-15, which
is obviously not a directory name.

Well, since I've run only linux since 1977, and haven't used gnuplot since
1998, all I can tell you is that it happened with this one plot on a linux
box. :-)

Personally, I prefer PSTricks, but each day's rainfall total is a discrete
amount unrelated to prior and succeeding days. This means that any sort of
line plot (including time series) is inappropriate. Such bar plots have a
place in scientific work as well as in business (where thay are a mainstay

I've seen this happen because of a
%%Orientation: Landscape

interpret this and whether to apply a rotation or not. The png and eps

I think you can safely edit your file to remove the offending line.

Enchant is a wrapper library for different spell checkers.
You can configure it to use Aspell if it isn't already the case.
You have to look up the Ubuntu documentation how to do this.

Sudden Single Spacing

Hi,

I think the problem came from the explicit argument --args when
running Rscript; it should not be there. You can remove it and try
again.

Tools--Preferences--Converters; find Sweave to LaTeX (whatever);
then modify the converter (remove --args).

The presence of --args will make ls.args[4] to be ISO-8859-15, which

Well, since I've run only linux since 1977, and haven't used gnuplot since
1998, all I can tell you is that it happened with this one plot on a linux
box. :-)

Personally, I prefer PSTricks, but each day's rainfall total is a discrete
amount unrelated to prior and succeeding days. This means that any sort of
line plot (including time series) is inappropriate. Such bar plots have a
place in scientific work as well as in business (where thay are a mainstay

I've seen this happen because of a
%%Orientation: Landscape

I think you can safely edit your file to remove the offending line.

Underline import failure

Create a LyX document which uses underline and export as Latex. Now
import the Latex document. The underline is not 'swallowed' by LyX and

does compile, and the earlier word which caused the problem is correctly

As far as I know, RTools simply (among other things) properly sets up R in

2011-06-13 Thread Murat Yildizoglu

Dear Murat

Thanks v much.

You will see that Liviu responded and I have tried to ask the questions re
RTools a little differently.

But, tnaks for trying. My problem definitely revolves around the fact that
as soon as try and include the 'Sweave' module is says that it's not
installed and my ver of Latex (Miktex) can't see it. I don't really know
what's package is missing from MikTex.

I am sure that Rob's instructions are fine it's just that as a 'newbie'
there seems to be some detail missing and for instance I don't know if I
must install the whole RTools (200mB) or not and then I can't see where it
gets run.

Anyway, thanks for trying - maybe I just go to Linux for the this, since
there seems as though there has always been less problems with Sweave in
that environment.

3. Install the appropriate RTools
  for your version of
R.

2011-06-13 Thread Mukhtar Ullah

Dear Lyx developers,
I have noticed two problems with LyX when run from the command prompt in
windows:

1) Typing
LyX -help
or
LyX --help
displays nothing.

Which PPA? Contact its maintainer to see if support for Aspell was
included. Alternatively, try to install hunspell and see if you can
select that. Otherwise, it's really not that difficult to configure
Enchant: read some Ubuntu docs and it should be one config file edit

Sudden Single Spacing

2011-06-13 Thread Bruce Pourciau
I'm writing a paper in the Elsevier class, with the option "review,"
which produces extra space between lines, suitable for a manuscript
submitted to a journal for review. But right in the middle of the
document, the text suddenly becomes single spaced for a couple of
paragraphs. In the source, the only odd thing I see is the comment, %
Preview source code for paragraph 85, which appears just before the
sudden single spacing begins.

Any thoughts?

It might help to know what you mean by 'slides' and by 'frames'. For
beamer a 'frame' and 'overlay' is what for PowerPoint is a 'slide' and
'animation', respectively. (But I may be wrong.)

Again, I'm not sure what you're looking for. You may want to check the
beamer example in File > New from template, which is a pretty complete
example of what beamer can do.

Re: Error with Lyx 2.0 and Sweave

2011-06-13 Thread Yihui Xie
Hi,

I think the problem came from the explicit argument "--args" when
running Rscript; it should not be there. You can remove it and try
again.

Tools-->Preferences-->Converters; find Sweave to LaTeX (whatever);
then modify the converter (remove "--args").

The presence of "--args" will make ls.args[4] to be ISO-8859-15, which
is obviously not a directory name.

Rich,

I have no idea why this has happened, but I don't use gnuplot because
this kind of thing seems to happen with it. Instead I use xmgrace,
which can do exactly what I think you're trying to do, and can export
directly to either PDF or EPS, either of which will probably behave
better than PS when included as a figure.

Not that this will help, but I recall this phenomenon some years ago.
For me (using linux) the problem has not reappeared in some time.

Such bar plots have a
place in scientific work as well as in business (where thay are a mainstay
of spreadsheet graphics).

I've seen this happen because of a
%%Orientation: Landscape
line in the postscript. It's up to the converter to decide how t
interpret this and whether to apply a rotation or not. The png and eps
converters evidently behave differently.

I think you can safely edit your file to remove the offending line.

Underline import failure

2011-06-13 Thread Andrew Parsloe
Create a LyX document which uses underline and export as Latex. Now
import the Latex document. The underline is not 'swallowed' by LyX and
shown as underline, but remains in ERT. Also, the document doesn't
compile. However, if another word is now underlined, then the document
does compile, and the earlier word which caused the problem is correctly
underlined in the pdf.

LyX 2.0, Windows Vista.
