Below is an excerpt of latex code; \documentclass[english]{article} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{a4wide} \begin{document} aaa \end{document} If I comment out the \usepackage{graphicx} line, then the result of the pdflatex output is a4, otherwise it gives letter size. So in this sense it seems as if the problem is a conflict with the graphicx package, however...if I change the first line to \documentclass[english,a4paper]{article} then it's all okay. Within LyX, go Insert - Lists TOC - BibTeX reference, then add your BibTeX database file, and select the style of your reference. By the sounds of it though you are fairly new to this, so just to expand a little - you'll need a BibTeX database file (*.bib usually) which contains a list of all your references and all the details necessary. Within the bib file, each reference is characterised by a unique tag (you can choose anything for this), and then a series of cells which contain information about the journal name, page numbers, etc. Although it is possible to create the bib file entirely by hand in a text-editor, you may find it easier to use a bib file editor. I use tkbibtex, although emacs has a BibTeX editor mode and is probably just as good, if not better. There are a heap of others out there as well. Once you've got a bib file prepared, then select this as your database in the Bibtex generated refernces widget within LyX (note that you can select several such dataase files if needed). To insert a reference within your document, go to Insert - Citation reference and select one of the tags (you'll see the full details of the reference within the selection window). It is possible to change the format and style of the reference appearances, but I'd suggest just getting the hang of inserting some references before moving on to anything too exotic. Hope this helps. Lata, Paul

Wrong papersize when using pdflatex
Hi all, If my LyX documents contain images then the papersize of the pdflatex output gets set to letter (8.5 × 11 inch), whereas I want it to be A4. I don't have this problem if the margins are set to default or custom. If I remove the images OR use a different pdf generator OR change the margin settings then the paper size is okay, but I would prefer having all of these things. I'm guessing that if I update some packages the problem could probably be fixed, but I don't really want to update everything. If someone could suggest the exact cause that would be great. I'm running LyX 1.3.5 (Qt) on Fedora Core 2, TeTex version 2.0.2-13. From what I can tell, the default paper size for pdflatex is set to A4. Many thanks. Lata, Paul

Accented characters and BibTeX
Hi all, What is the most efficient way of inserting accented characters into BibTeX? In the past I simply inserted the ASCII character into the BibTeX file with emacs and never had any troubles. I've recently upgraded from RedHat 7.2 to Fedora Core 2 and now this no longer works. Depending on the ASCII character I insert, it either gives the wrong output, or it gives an error. For example; é appears as é in both dvi and pdf output Ö gives the error; Package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined ... {\em ^^c3^^96} ... You need to provide a definition with \DeclareInputText or \DeclareInputMate before using this key. A hunt around only gave me the clue that accented characters should be inserted as TeX code...I tried this and it worked...but my BibTeX file already has a lot of these characters in it. In the worst case I'll be able to work around, but it seems a little unusual to me that this used to work, but not anymore. Even more confusing is that if I copy and paste the characters from emacs into the LyX document text they come out fine. Any clues? Cheers, Paul

EPS graphics rotating page
Hi all, I've got a formatted Excel spreadsheet that I need to insert into my document. Its got a heap of colour and formatting, so I can't just import it in as a LyX/LaTeX table. I have printed it out to an EPS file, and (eventually) I got it to insert into my LyX document. The problem is that it rotates the page when I view it in PDF, and when I try to print it just gives a blank page. It doesn't matter whether I rotate the figure in LyX, or even if I rotate the EPS, that page in the PDF output is rotated (as a landscape). Any clues?
