Mis-edit of the wiki
Hi, I seem to have mis-edited the Wiki, specifically I have changed the Bibtex.sidebar (https://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/SideBar) instead of adding to the BibTex page itself. Further to my embarassment, I don't seem to be able to reverse my edit. Sorry!! If anyone else knows how to and can reverse the change, I would be grateful. I don't think so. What I am looking into is this: Pacer will only accept pdf files. If those who export to pdf from within a word document don't have to "flatten" the document before uploading to Pacer, while those who use lyx are forced to flatten any document imported from a Word doc before uploading to Pacer, I want to let the Pacer folks know this and suggest that Pacer not default to Word. Word is so dominant that even in Nevada State Courts we are required to convert any editable document to Word before the judge will even look at it. If there must be a standard here, I think it should be an open source standard. Courts should not be in the business of requiring everyone to use Word (or any other proprietary product). Hi el, If I get a Word doc, it opens in libreoffice, which allows for export to pdf. If I recall, I generally either highlight the words involved while in libreoffice and paste directly to lyx or instead export to pdf, highlight the relevant portions of the pdf and paste to lyx. It took me forever to get the ps2pdf right (so it would become pleading paper, with a vertical line followed by line numbers to the left of the page. When I use anything else I have to load pleading paper and use that. I plan to try your PDF5 trick this weekend. I use lyx 2.3.6 on my debian (bullseye) system I often file in Pacer, the database used by the US federal court system. Normally, I just do regular lyx stuff and once the file is ready, export with pst2pdf (to insure that line numbers exist at the left side of each page) and upload to Pacer. HOWEVER, I often get files from other attorneys who use microsoft Word, which I import into lyx and reformat. To file in Pacer, the document must be "flattened." This poses no problem with files created in lyx. However, whenever I import a Word file and convert it to lyx, Pacer balks and refuses to accept the document unless I "flatten" it. If I am at the office, I "flatten" it by printing out the lyx document and, using the copier, scan it back to me. I then can upload that scanned file to pacer. If I am at home, I "flatten" it by using "$ pdf2ps orig.pdf - | ps2pdf - flattened.pdf", which usually works. Pacer itself uses Microsoft Word and brags about it incessantly. My question is this: Do those who use Microsoft Word also have to "flatten" files before filing in the federal courts or does Pacer just accept Microsoft Word files "as is"? Placing a citation in an endnote.
I was reading a post in a Rmarkdown forum where the writer said that he had
been using footnotes with a citation embedded to produce a pdf.. His
editor has requested a change from footnotes to endnotes and he cannot get
it to word.
Rmardown uses pandoc to convert from Rmarkdown to pdf. I thought that this
should fairly easy to do in LyX or LaTeX but it does not seem so.
If I add
\usepackage{endnotes}
\let\footnote=\endnote
to the LaTeX preamble I lose the footnote and citation but still get the
endnote indicator.
I have attached a MWE and sample bib file.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Before calling him I loaded every texlive program available on synaptic (except full) and reconfigured lyx and that didn't help. We recently updated the three computers used by staff to Debian 12. My computer is still Debian 11. Though mine still works fine, none of the updated computers will generate pdfs. They all show an error to the effect that it can't find pstricks.sty. Our IT guy is here now trying to fix it but I thought a quick email to this site might produce some helpful comments. bottom posting question
I use lyx exclusively in my law practice. I like this list but find reading through the lyx posts in order to get to the bottom tiring. Perhaps,while sticking to bottom posting, the sender of a replying email should be encouraged to delete a portion of the prior text no longer necessary, keeping enough to maintain context? This would speed up browsing by those lurking around (like me) without violating the bottom posting requirement. Frankly, I almost always read posts by Dr Eberhard W Lisse as he doesn't usually bottom post and is very lyx- knowledgeable. I will try again upon receiving further (and more specific) instructions. However, now that I know about (Alt - and Alt +) while in the lyx document, I am a happy camper and have no need to change screen fonts in Preferences. However, I learned that while the lyx doc is open, ALT + or Alt - works great, so I will just do that until I figure out the problem (which is there is no "save" option on the screen when adjusting screen fonts). Screen font question
I can change screen fonts (lyx 2.3.6 running on Debian) by Tools>Preferences>look>screen fonts. BUT I CAN'T SAVE THE SETTINGS AS CHANGED. (Default extension: sty) Enter file name: ! Emergency stop. Considering the date (2015) this version was probably a left-over from when I didn't use Slackware's slackbuild scripts. I suspect the best thing to do: - Remove the 2015 textlive completely - Re-install the 2022 version... Hi all. I created a new LyX document and imported the 'orbd.tex' file from a package I wanted to use (https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/bitstream/handle/10919/84164/LaTeX%20sourcefiles.zip?sequence=16=y) and modify some things. tlmgr list --only-installed lists the pdfcomment.sty file, but trying to render the document I get the message: LaTex error: file pdfcomment.sty not found. I think its probably the menu bar that I am missing (the one that lets you open recent files and save a lyx file to various pdf versions). This is pretty confusing for me. I may wait til Christmas is over before looking into it further. Right now what I do is email the lyx file to my secretary who can print it out fine. Thank you Paul very much for the suggestion. It caused me to think that something might be wrong with permissions. So I opened lyx in root and the top tool bar shows. It only doesn't show when I open it on a regular, non-root command line or from the lyx icon. I am not sure where the system menu is. top tool bar not available
So I removed lyx and lyx common and reinstalled on my debian bullfrog system. This is what I get now when trying to open Lyx: /usr/share/applications/lyx.desktop is not a readable LYX document. Tufte Handout - move references to end.
I was using Tufte Handout for a small exercise and because of the subject and citation style, apacite, I would prefer the references only at the end of the document. I know I should be able to put the bibliography at the bottom of the document but is there a way to suppress them in sidebars? We do everything in lyx, even one page letters, except that some courts require that submitted orders be in doc format (in case the judge wants to edit). For those docs we use libreoffice. I suggest that the thing to change is name of Page Break, so as to include the 'break' part and also the 'spread' part. This sounds like an excellent way to keep lyx up to date, but I am clueless about alternative repositories. If they require github, I'm not interested. Lyx 2.3.2 ships with Debian Buster and it works fine for my purposes. I have learned that adding software versions not in the Buster repository sometimes causes problems. So I will probably keep using 2.3.2 until next summer or so when, I expect, Debian should come out with a new version. Staff and I save to dropbox many, many times a day. I have never seen such an error. We are a linux shop. Perhaps that is why. margin text and labelling environment generates a bug
Hi, When I create a margin text on the same line as a labelling environment, the document will not compile. This happens with lyx 2.3.3 on Windows and with lyx 2.3.1 on linux mint 18.2. Works fine for me Ubuntu 18.04, TexLive, Lyx 2.3.3 I noticed is that that the word "France" is in French rather than English. Could this be giving the problem? I live in Canada and automatically set up for English & French when installing. Could you be on a machine that does not have French installed? I did try creating a new user - that worked! and for the new user LyX worked as normal. Under my normal user name, I found that the file ~.lyx/preferences existed but using the LyX interface to alter thinks made no difference. Default Zoom seems by default to be 150%. Changing it to 100% made no apparent difference Removing the preferences file and reinvoking LyX resulted in a new preferences file being created but again no change of behaviour. We seem to have established that the problem is not in the LyX files but somewhere in the user directory. Any further suggestions would be welcome. LyX now won't display text on screen
Hi Help! After messing about with trying to insert 2 jpeg images, I now cannot see any of the text. It is still there and appears when I convert to PDF via pdflatex. In LyX itself, where the text should be there are brownish thin lines. I've looked at the lyx file itself (with vi) and cannot see anything wrong. The same file copied to other Linux machines and an iMac all still behave OK under LyX. I am doing a koma document with sections. The section font is too large. So I go to each section manually, highlight it and change font from larger to large. And if there are subsections, they are now same size as sections, so I have to manually reduce font size of sub-sections. Isn't there an easier way to do this? fixing tiny font on laptop
For some unknown reason, my lyx fonts on all files suddenly became too tiny to read. Internet says use mouse wheel to fix, which works fine (I borrowed one). But my laptop doesn't have a mouse or a mouse wheel. Any alternative way of getting normal font size back on a mouse-less laptop? I may not be able to borrow a mouse next time this happens. If those are not the same, then whichever is the older LyX will refuse to handle the newer format. Meanwhile, the newer LyX will upgrade an older file to the new format. Of course this is correct behaviour, I merely have to ensure that I have the same version in both places. Yes, I agree, it does not have to be the same beyond the minor version, i.e. at present any 2.3.x. It is perfectly straightforward. The key gotchas I can recall are these and they are not serious: - the lyx versions must be identical. - if there are any special modules, both must be present in both places. - the file might well look a little different in lyx on Windows and Linux. This is not a real problem for me but might be if your colleague is not co-located with you. - My Acrobat Reader on Windows is anti-social about closing the file. I always have to approve closing the existing version when I compile a new version.
