As toggle implies, after that math is seen as text and text as math which

There are several such scenarios where a single wrong character can

This was exactly the problem: a \propto symbol seen as text.

If you want to find out where in your document the problematic part is, you
can make a copy and cut/delete parts of it until it compiles.

Alternatively, you can mark a part of the text and put it in a LyX note.
LyX notes are not exported, so the effect is almost the same but it is
easier to restore the content (press [Backspace] when the cursor is at the
first positon inside the note).

There is a slight chance of failure when LyX inserts some code into the
document (preamble, say) depending on the document content.
I had this problem with a document containg text parts in the languages
greek and polutonikogreek. The resulting LaTeX error did not disappear after
putting the polutonikogreek part in a note as LyX did still insert both
language options in the document header.

New Error Messages After Upgrade to LyX/Mac 1.5.4

2008-06-23 Thread Bruce Pourciau
I have a long document, containing some mathematics and some
graphics, created last year with LyX/Mac 1.3.4 (or perhaps even an
earlier version). I have since upgraded to LyX/Mac 1.5.4 and tossed
1.3.4. But now when I open this file in 1.5.4, doing View View PDF
(pdflatex) shows a bunch of new error messages, all of these types:

Missing $ inserted.
Extra }, or forgotten $.
LaTeX Error: Bad math environment delimiter.
LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
Missing } inserted.

Last time I opened this file (three months ago), it could be viewed
without error in 1.3.4. Other similar documents, created with 1.3.4,
seem to be fine in 1.5.4.

Anybody know what's going on? (NB: I'm a LyX intermediate and a TeX
novice.)

Not really, these messages can be caused by pretty much anything.

Try cutting text until it finally compiles. Then uncut text until you
find where the bit that is causing trouble. (It is quite often that
this is needed. Perhaps there should be an automated tool to do this?)
