The error means that pdflatex is not working on your PC. To fix this, please

LOL, silly me. I thought maybe I'd help him, clicked on the attachment,
the default was mupdf (I guess I configured wrong, bad user!), and
nothing happened. So I said "shine it" and went on to other things.

Sillier me: When showing text error messages, I put them on the
web with a pastebin app, and when they're graphical, I either copy the
text part and pastebin it, or post the graphic on a website under my
control, or if I've made it tiny (in filesize), I attach it AS AN
IMAGE. Some people post it to imgur.com.

I was always taught that, when asking questions, I should make it
trivially convenient for others to understand and answer.

Oh well, it could be worse. About 5 years ago a guy posted a ~ 1MB
"minimum working example" to the list, wrapped up i an RAR file :-)

It was just a way to embed the snapshot of the error. An envelope could have
been saved by inserting directly the figure in the email. :-)

In any case we would be better served with the text output of

Document-> LaTeX Log

There press the button that says "Go to next error" and see what is shows.

I completely deleted the texlive package in the debian jessie repository and
downloaded it from the texlive website, but still get same problem (dvik shows
the line numbers beginning in the middle of the pleading paper rather than at
the top). Its something to do with the dvi rendering as the file prints to the
printer just fine, with the line numbers in the proper place.

I get same problem when exporting to pdflatex BUT NOT when exporting to ps2pdf.

Ps2pdf renders the line numbers on pleading paper just fine.

This problem did not occur with the version of lyx which came with Debian
Wheezy,

Again, any comments would be appreciated. I miss cntrl-D.

I recently upgraded to lyx 2.1.2 and now to 2.1.3

The following preamble worked fine until I did the upgrade to 2.1.2 and 2.1.3
didn't help.

 *  \usepackage{geometry}
 *   \newgeometry{top=.85in, bottom=.85in, left=1.30in, right=.65in}

 *  \setlength{\footnotemargin}{0.3cm}
 *  \setlength{\footnotesep}{0.4cm}

 *  \usepackage{rotating}
 *  \usepackage{listings}
 *  \renewcommand{\arraystretch}{2}
 *  \usepackage{watermark}
 *  %\usepackage{geometry}

 *
 * % END left and right vertical lines, and line numbers.
 *  \let\OrgIndex\index
 *

 *  \renewcommand*{\index}[1]{\OrgIndex{#1}}
 *
But now xdvik (cntrl-D) shows the line numbers starting half-way down the
page, rather than at the top of the page. Same problem if I export to pdflatex.
Lyx still prints fine. Its only the xdvi view that is screwed up.
Any suggestions?

This is a font problem. If a vector font is installed, he can change
to it in Document Settings:

Try:
Document > Settings > Fonts > Roman > Latin Modern Roman

Questions on viewing PDF problem

2011-06-04 Thread Stanley Hartwell
Dear all,

Starting yesterday, the view function in Lyx suddenly stopped working. (It
was all fine before). It generates an error message that Auto-view file
/.../file.pdf failed. No matter what type of file I tried, it generated the
same message. (For example, I would open a new Lyx document and type hello
world! and click view and the same error message would appear)

I've discovered that Lyx actually successfully generates the pdf file in its
temp directory, but it just fails to view it. I have even re-installed Lyx,
to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Relevant info:
Operating System: Win 7
Lyx Version: 2.0.0

Thanks!

Stanley

This probably means there was an error and the file was not produced. I
guess the next question is: What was the error?

This is due a bug in in LyX.

The workaround is at this thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg86089.html

I don't know what causes this and why changing this configuration solves the
problem, but I am forwarding this again to devel list.
