My suggestion is rather brutal. That is to create a separate document
for the own-publications list, process it with command-line
applications (latex and biblatex) to get a final .tex file, and then
drop its essential content into the dissertation file.

I'm sorry that I don't have a happier solution.

Biblatex does not allow to mix different styles in a document.

I would suggest that you compile the publication list on your own and
adapt the pagination via \setcounter{page}{}

Polina,

I doubt there is a 'proper' way, only one acceeptable to your committee.

Have you considered putting your publication list as a separate,
un-numbered chapter, or an appendix? Those would be what I would try, but
I've not had an need to use the master-child document format (my publishedf
book was one document with a single reference appendix).

Others likely have other solutions which better fit your needs and your
committee's preference.

Good luck defending,

Rich

Ok, that's probably not possible. I just tried to create such an account -

Now I've had a look into the source. If this error is shown depends on the

With MacTeX this shouldn't happen.

1. Enable the message pane below the View menu.

Ok, no problem. There are different things the guys are talking about.
I'll try to explain it.
1. The terminal thing is a possibility to start the broken program in a
different way.
There is the possibility it works then - then it would be clear you
have a known problem.
2. You cannot incorporate the patch yourself. A patch is useful for a
developer to fix a
problem and build a new version of a program. This step I did already
for you.
3. You may open the downloaded .dmg file on your system and use the
included LyX program.
This program version includes the mentioned patch already.
4. The checksum file is useful to verify the correctness of the
downloaded file.
If you don't know how to do this it's not necessary to do this step.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you are able to start the
LyX 2.1.2.2 included in the .dmg file.

I'm late coming into this but I wonder if you think you have deleted
the spaces or have in actual fact. If you copy and past your document
into a text editor it might show up the space if you move your cursor
through it.

Otherwise just check that you're not using some forbidden character in
your document that might show up as a space.

Probably not much help. But if I have ever had such an error [not for a
long time] I have changed the document name to one word, just to see if
it loads then. If it does, the rename it as desired typing it carefully
and try again.

See all the errors in the above, instead of document, it should be
document name and instead of the in some instances it should be
then.

Ok, no problem. There are different things the guys are talking about.
   I'll try to explain it.
   1. The terminal thing is a possibility to start the broken program in a
   different way.
There is the possibility it works then - then it would be clear you have
   a known problem.
   2. You cannot incorporate the patch yourself. A patch is useful for a
   developer to fix a
problem and build a new version of a program. This step I did already for
   you.

Be well,

See all the errors in the above, instead of document, it should be
document name and instead of the in some instances it should be

RE: Issue with lyx PLEASE HELP

2014-11-08 Thread V N
I have version:

LyX Version 2.1.2.2

(November 1, 2014)

Library directory: /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/

User directory: ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.1/

When I open my file and then press the button to make a pdf it gives me the
error message and I press ok to go back to my file. Then I go to documents and
the "latex log" is grey. I'm not able to choose it. Is there another way I can
send you it to you? Again, thank you for your patience.

Hmm.. this is a pity. Two things you may try:
1. Enable the message pane below the View menu.
Activate the debug messages for LaTeX production.
Then press the pdf creation button and copy the
contents of the message pane to your next mail.
2. Try to do what Wolfgang proposed.
Rename the folder(s) with space(s) in the name
and eliminate the spaces.

RE: Issue with lyx PLEASE HELP

2014-11-08 Thread V N
I'm not sure how to activate debug messages for Latex production. But I have
deleted all of the spaces in the folder names of the location of my file and
reopened and still have the following message in the message pane:

14:24:46.900: Previewing ...

14:24:46.907: (buffer-view: ⌘R)Error: File name error

The directory path to the document cannot contain spaces.

14:24:58.081: Error while exporting format: PDF (pdflatex)

I'm late coming into this but I wonder if you think you have deleted
the spaces or have in actual fact. If you copy and past your document
into a text editor it might show up the space if you move your cursor
through it.

Otherwise just check that you're not using some forbidden character in
your document that might show up as a space.

Probably not much help. But if I have ever had such an error [not for a
long time] I have changed the document name to one word, just to see if
it loads then. If it does, the rename it as desired typing it carefully
and try again.

Be well,

See all the errors in the above, instead of document, it should be
"document name" and instead of the in some instances it should be
"then".

I find it easy to make mistakes, typos. [sigh]

Do you have given your account a name with a space?
Perhaps you are using "V N" for your account?
That's also part of the directory path…

Issue with lyx PLEASE HELP

2014-11-07 Thread V N
Hello, I am running Yosemite and installed the latest lyx dmg file. When
I open up lyx I am given the following prompt:
The selected document class article(AMS) requires external files that are not
available. The document class can still be used, but the document cannot be
compiled until the following prerequisites are installed:
amsart.cls
See section 2.1.2.2 (Class Availability) of the User's Guid for more
information.

After the file opens and I press the eyes to make a pdf, I get the message: The
directory path to the document cannot contain spaces.

I am not a tech guy so although I have read some forums where people had the
issue I still need some step by step advice.
Can you please HELP?! I need to make pdf's ASAP.

Does the name of your directory path contain a space? e.g. my directory? Try
myDirectory.

2. gmail allows you to receive email from jez.z.if...@gmail.com . Did

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your ideas.

1.
I have thought of this, but there is just shown this address here in
the complete header. There also is an e-mail-address, in which one
could enter another address than the one you write from, to
unsubscribe the entered address. It might really be, that another
address is forwarded, but when I looked on the google-site, I idid not
find it. And in the header I could find the following:

Delivered-To: jezzi...@gmail.com

2.
Maybe I subsribed with one of the following:
jezzi...@gmail.com
jezzi...@googlemail.com

Unfortunately I don’t have the welcome message anymore…

Why is it so difficult to get out of this list? I have treid

Which is the normal way to get out? Do the mentioned ways work

2012-10-17 Thread jezZiFeR iMap

Hello,

I have tried so many different things, I could not remember them all.
Is there a safe way to really get out of the list? I am not from an
english speaking country, so every message is hard to write, and maybe
sometimes things not too easy to understand.

lyx-users-ow...@lists.lyx.org is the »human being« which is mentioned,
if the automized version does not work, but nothing happend after the
several times I have told my problems there.

Why is it so difficult to get out of this list? I have treid
everything which is written on http://www.lyx.org/MailingLists#toc2 on
how to get out of the list.

»lyx-users-unsubscr...@lists.lyx.org« to unsubscribe
did not work.

I think even there it is not easy enough to find that information. But
well, I understood, that in every header there is an e-mail-adress to
unsubscribe. I have tried this several times also, before trying to
communicate with human beings.

Which is the normal way to get out? Do the mentioned ways work
normally? I always got the answer, that my address would not be on the
list – but I still get the e-mails.

Is there anybody in the list who could help?
Thank you!

APA style manuscript? Please help format!

2010-06-16 Thread Aaron Hall
I'm trying to format an article class document for submission as an assignment
which requires a running header, 1 inch margins, double spaces, etc... under
APA format.

Headings style is set to default, should I change it? I'd like to have a short
title at the top middle, and my name at one edge...

I'm using Lyz and Zotero to handle my bibliography (fyi, seems to work), and
I'm using the natbib option in Document Settings, and the apalike2 style on
the right click bibliography setting. Should I use apa style? It works too,
and I'm not sure which one is best. Also, will I have problems using the natbib
setting? According to
http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/biblio/bibtex/contrib/apacite/apacite.pdf
apacite may be the best implementation to date, but it's incompatible with
natbib, and I think part of my problem is that I have very long abstracts,
which are basically my notes on the works, and include %'s 's /'s and ()'s.  I
erased the %'s but it still didn't work, and my notes heavily rely on the other
symbols for diagrams and formulas...

To get rid of the huge gutter I had to unclick default margins and give it 1
inch margins. I'm not sure what the other defaults are, so I said 1mm for head
sep, and 1cm for head hight and 1cm for foot skip (please correct these if
wrong, I'm not sure what they do...)

My preamble in the document settings reads:

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

\usepackage{indentfirst}
%\rhead{\textsc{Financial Services Operations Management} ~ \thepage}
The first line indents the first paragraph in section (which is usually not
indented)
The commented code was an non-working attempt to create a running header. I
really need a running header.

How do I center the level 1 heading? (I might not need to, but knowing would be
great)

How do I number and label tables I made in Lyx? (or figures)? Can I insert a
reference in the label?

Also, I need to insert diagrams that look like
this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Porter_Value_Chain.png
My options: Latex

I need to answer these questions pretty soon, so anyone's help, as
comprehensive as possible, would be greatly appreciated, and note I don't know
much about LaTeX, so I'd like to stay above the hood if possible, though adding
verbatim lines to the preamble is certainly ok.

Thanks!!!

Aaron

Oops,

I trailed off on a question near the end, it was: Also, I need to insert
diagrams that look like
this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Porter_Value_Chain.png
My options: Latex and I forgot to add the GiMP, MAYBE scribus, or just using a
table in Lyx...

Anyways, the Latex for something as complex as my example appears to be REALLY
complicated. I'm guessing the GiMP is probably what I'll have to use.

If it helps, here's my priorities, highest = 1, lowest = 5:
1) ***running header***
2) **numbering and labeling tables and figures (numbered separately).
3) *best bibliography recommendation
4) if I used a bad approach to workaround any of my other issues
5) if you can recommend an easy approach to getting a similar diagram (I'm
actually using a table inside of Lyx at the moment, but a pgf/TikZ signal type
graphic, perhaps overlaid? might be very helpful, and I might like to use
several of them in a row with words inside, but again, this is a low
priority...)

Again, thanks so much for your attention!  I'm going to stop researching Lyx
and Latex for a bit and get back to writing.  Should I cross post this in the
Latex Lyx forums?

You might try inkscape (www.inkscape.org) for the value chain diagrams. I
used to use XFig for that sort of thing, but I'm learning inkscape more. Of
course, it won't automatically generate the diagrams, but it'll be a lot easier
to use (in my opinion) than GiMP.

   1) Running headers is no problem. You may have to modify the document
preamble to get things just as you want; it'll be something like

   \lhead{}
   \chead{Short title here}
   \rhead{name}

   2) Numbering and labeling of figures and tables should be automatic. Once
you've chosen to (for example) insert a figure (say by Insert - Float -
Figure), and typed in the figure caption, you can place the cursor at the
beginning of the caption and choose Insert - Label, and give it a short label.
Then the cross-referencing will be fine if you want to refer to that figure or
table or whatever. (The same applies to placing labels almost anywhere, as for
Section heads.)

3) I like using JabRef for bibliography management, though I've used
Zotero, too, which is handy for pulling in papers and references
semi-automatically from web-pages.

Putting that code in my preamble makes my document give compile errors. I need
the running header to be in all caps on the title page for an APA manuscript,
can someone help me do this?

Perhaps the issue is using the Journal class?  See my issue 4) below for what
I'm considering to fix it.

For my issue 2) I found a potential solution to inserting figures and tables,
though I haven't tried it:
http://www.lyx.org/Walkthrough3
Does Float seem rather non-descriptive to anyone else?  I say that as a new
user.

Also, on my issue 3) the question isn't Zotero v. Jabref, it's apa vs
apalike2 vs any other workable apa style (and perhaps the requisite or
exclusive natbib)

For my issue 4) I guess I'll just use what works.  However, there is an apa
option when selecting new document from template. When selecting this, I get
this error:

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

The layout file requested by this document,
apa.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation
for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output.
So I would like to be able to use this if possible, but I don't know how.

For my issue 5) I think I'm going to use OpenOffice Draw. Should I export to or
save as JPG or PNG or something else?

which are basically my notes on the works, and include %'s 's /'s and ()'s.  I
erased the %'s but it still didn't work, and my notes heavily rely on the other
symbols for diagrams and formulas...

To get rid of the huge gutter I had to unclick default margins and give it 1
inch margins. I'm not sure what the other defaults are, so I said 1mm for head
sep, and 1cm for head hight and 1cm for foot skip (please correct these if
wrong, I'm not sure what they do...)

My preamble in the document settings reads:

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

\usepackage{indentfirst}
%\rhead{\textsc{Financial Services Operations Management} ~ \thepage}

Thanks!!!

   1) Running headers is no problem. You may have to modify the document
preamble to get things just as you want; it'll be something like

When selecting this, I get
this error:

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

The layout file requested by this document,
apa.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation
for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output.
So I would like to be able to use this if possible, but I don't know how.

For my issue 5) I think I'm going to use OpenOffice Draw. Should I export to or
save as JPG or PNG or something else?

Putting that code in my preamble makes my document give compile errors. I need
the running header to be in all caps on the title page for an APA manuscript,
can someone help me do this?

Perhaps the issue is using the Journal class?  See my issue 4) below for what
I'm considering to fix it.

For my issue 2) I found a potential solution to inserting figures and tables,
though I haven't tried it:
http://www.lyx.org/Walkthrough3
Does "Float" seem rather non-descriptive to anyone else?  I say that as a new
user.

Also, on my issue 3) the question isn't Zotero v. Jabref, it's "apa" vs
"apalike2" vs any other workable apa style (and perhaps the requisite or
exclusive natbib)

For my issue 4) I guess I'll just use what works.  However, there is an apa
option when selecting new document from template. When selecting this, I get
this error: "

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }

The layout file requested by this document,
apa.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation
for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output."
So I would like to be able to use this if possible, but I don't know how.

For my issue 5) I think I'm going to use OpenOffice Draw. Should I export to or
save as JPG or PNG or something else?

You might try inkscape (www.inkscape.org) for the value chain diagrams. I
used to use XFig for that sort of thing, but I'm learning inkscape more. Of
course, it won't automatically generate the diagrams, but it'll be a lot easier
to use (in my opinion) than GiMP.

   1) Running headers is no problem. You may have to modify the document
preamble to get things just as you want; it'll be something like

   \lhead{}
   \chead{Short title here}
   \rhead{name}

   2) Numbering and labeling of figures and tables should be automatic. Once
you've chosen to (for example) insert a figure (say
by Insert -> Float -> Figure), and typed in the figure caption, you can place
the cursor at the beginning of the caption and choose Insert -> Label, and give
it a short label. Then the cross-referencing will be fine if you want to refer
to that figure or table or whatever. (The same applies to placing labels almost
anywhere, as for Section heads.)

    3) I like using JabRef for bibliography management, though I've used
Zotero, too, which is handy for pulling in papers and references
semi-automatically from web-pages.

Oops,

I trailed off on a question near the end, it was: "Also, I need to insert
diagrams that look like
this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Porter_Value_Chain.png
My options: Latex" and I forgot to add the GiMP, MAYBE scribus, or just using a
table in Lyx...

5)
if you can recommend an easy approach to getting a similar diagram (I'm
actually using a table inside of Lyx at the moment, but a pgf/TikZ signal type
graphic,
perhaps overlaid? might be very helpful, and I might like to use several of
them in a row with words inside, but again, this is a low priority...)

Again, thanks so much for your attention!  I'm going to stop researching Lyx
and Latex for a bit and get back to writing.  Should I cross post this in the
Latex Lyx forums?

LOF LOT Customization - Someone Please help

2009-11-13 Thread Marcelo Boss
Hi Guys, it makes a long time since I don't post any question bothering you
guys.
The thing is, I need to delivery something to my college and as I have a short
period of time to do this I was wondering if some one already faced this issue.
Actually is a simple question but I'm not sure how to accomplish.

What I wanna do is:
Under LIST OF FIGURES (LOF) and LIST OF TABLES (LOT) I want the following:

Instead of
1 . Description of Figure
2. Description of Figure
3. Description of Figure

I WANT:
Figure 1. Description of Figure
Figure 2. Description of Figure
Figure 3. Description of Figure
And
Table 1. Description of Table
Table 2. Description of Table
Table 3. Description of Table

I want it for tables and figures.
I believe just a simple \renewcommand would solve my problem. CAN please
someone tell me how to do this?

As always,
Thank you very much.

You have 3 possibilities:
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=tocloft

In case you are not alreas a memoir or koma-script document class for your document, I recommend to
use the tocloft package.

Thank you Uwe, You are always helping me. :-)
I found something useful:
\renewcommand{\cftXpresnum}{SOMETHING }

When I use it the SOMETHING word is overwriting the figures numbering. (Words
are put upon another).
I will do a little bit more of research and let you know if it worked. If you
have any guess...

Thank you very much

Re: Bibliography please help

2009-05-18 Thread Piero Faustini

Do you know another application that could help us to build the Styles?

I never tried, but I can guess building styles with BibLaTeX would be not so
difficoult, and it can do almost everything you can ask to other BibTeX
packages. In addition, you can try modify existing BibLateX styles, although -
I repeat - I never tried to do it.
And once you are able to use it, it would be worth for future needs.

In ctan http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/custom-bib/
(and probably included in your latex distribution) there are several scripts
for making bst. It should be able to produce about everything you would want.
But you need to have a clear understanding of what you want :). Read the
documentation as a start or run latex makebst.tex and answer the questions.

You haven't understood me corectly. You are writing an article for a journal, so when you know the
journal, then you have to use the BibTeX style file provided by the journal and not unsrt. When the
journal doesn't provide a BibTeX style they at least provide a Word template so that you know how to
format the bibliography. So it is not important what your supervisor says, but what the
editors/publishers of the journal need, otherwise they will reject your article until its style
follows the guidelines.
So when you could send a Word screenshot of the template provided by the journal publisher or tell
us the name of the journal, we can help you.

 journal(italic),year(bold),volume, pages

This is not enough info, because how are the entries separated, what is the font style of the
entries, has the volume entry the prefix vol. or volume or no prefix...?
