Pavel,

thanks.

I understand the wider issue, and generally don't like these bait and
switch tactics which one encounters once in a while.

The problem is not really lyx-specific. Our main goal is to produce
source code. So at the end it is the users ditribution who needs to
ship certain version of Qt. Possible year-lag is not a huge problem.

What is concerning here is rather whole Qt-KDE community interaction.
Nontrivial percentage of Qt contributions comes from OSS comunity around. Now,
being such developer, are you going to accept that you need to pay for your own
work if you need the fix soon? The worst possible outcome could be forking Qt
by the OSS community and that's where the "interesting" times would start :)
It wouldn't help the long-term future of the codebase neither for Qt-company nor
for the OSS community, but it might happen if QtC decide that mid-term revenue
is most important thing now.

For LyX itself there is not much to worry about, we'll likely just follow the
big players like KDE or distributions choice :)

It seems that new features in Qt are only 3d and virtual reality these
days... I am not sure that we'll lose much.

The issue might be though with bugs experienced with new versions of

The problem would be that the version of Qt that Debian or Fedora or
whatever has (and what we can link into the Windows binary, etc) would
lag behind what's available to paying customers and so would not have
the latest bug fixes, etc. That's not ideal, but it's not catastrophic

I have marked this email as important as I might need it in the future.

I have used lyx for many years and like Charlie just go to the Debian
(currently
Buster) repository and download it (currently repository has 2.3.2-1). Works
fine
with texlive. However I keep hearing that the QT people's efforts to monetize
QT
may start to give lyx problems.

Hi,

over many years -- all because of problems in accessing QT.

At the moment I am trying to compile in buster unsuccessfully.
Does any one know what needs to be set in the configuration.

Responded thus:

Am probably speaking out of turn. Maybe the important word is
"compile". If so please ignore this, because it is just noise.

At the risk of bringing the devil to the door:

I have used LyX for so many years with so many Debian versions, Buster
and Bullseye at the moment, many before that. Have to admit that it
has always installed successfully from the Debian repository, each
time. Never had to do anything special with QT.

Always worked straight up, and with a little tweaking of paths, locked
into all LyX documents of which there are thousands. on a new
internal, or external hard drive.

Why do you need to "compile" it when using Debian? I am interested.

Charlie

Debian is never up to date. Moving LyX documents from one machine to
another is a pain when the versions are different.
So it is to keep in line with current versions of LyX on other machines.

I have tried every combination of configuration parameters from the
simplest to the most complete without success.  Unfortunately it is very
difficult to imagine what is intended with all the selections allowed by
the configuration file. From my checking of the archive, this has been
true for everyone else using debian. The directories called "qt5" appear
in many strange locations. If you can explain what $QTDIR should refer
to, would setting this environmental variable be sufficient to allow
configuration Regards Frank Salter

I am now using my notebook for completing a paper in lyx. However, the

LyX-Version, and the lyx2lyx-Script could not convert the document.

Yes. Download the src tarball of LyX [1], unpack and navigate to
/lib/lyx2lyx/, then copy this folder (entirely) to the system dir of
your LyX installation. On Linux this would usually be
/usr/share/lyx/lyx2lyx. Make sure to first (re)move the existing

should work in many cases, but if you have have issues in the distant

/lib/lyx2lyx/, then copy this folder (entirely) to the system dir of
your LyX installation. On Linux this would usually be
/usr/share/lyx/lyx2lyx. Make sure to first (re)move the existing
lyx2lyx folder. A word of caution: this is a hackish approach that
should work in many cases, but if you have have issues in the distant
future with opening LyX files this would be your culprit; then you'd
either install latest LyX, or repeat this procedure.
Liviu

Got it, thanks, Liviu

yes, as zlib1g, and it says:
compression library - runtime
zlib is a library implementing the deflate compression method found
in gzip and PKZIP. This package includes the shared library.

That package does not include the file zlib.h:
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/amd64/zlib1g/filelist
You need zlib-dev:
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/zlib1g-dev
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/amd64/zlib1g-dev/filelist
which "includes the development support files".

Base packages, like zlib1g, include only the files need to *use* the
library. So to run LyX, you only need zlib1g, which LyX uses to zip and
unzip things. The *-dev packages, on the other hand, include what you
need to "link against" the library, that is, what you need to *compile*
programs that use that library. So, to compile LyX, you need zlib1g-dev.

The same goes for the X packages and Qt packages. E.g., as well as
libqt4, you need libqt4-dev.

 Hello Weidong,
Here is a short Howto that I wrote for compiling LyX and using GNU Stow
to keep it out of the way of your existing LyX installation.

 -

 ===
Compiling LyX on Ubuntu or Debian
 ===

  And using GNU Stow

 Getting the tools
 =

 1. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get build-dep lyx
 2. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get install stow
 3. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get install automake
 4. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo atp-get install autoconf

This should get most or all of what you need. There may be a
substantial download if you have no building tools already installed.

 Getting LyX
 ===

 You want the source code.

Download the source tarball from http://www.lyx.org/Download. The
downloaded file will be named lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz.

 Local directory
 ===

 1. y...@yourmachine:~$ mkdir local
 2. y...@yourmachine:~$ mv lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz ./local
(Note: the tarball may be downloaded to some special directory,
usually either Desktop or Downloads. You may need to adjust the
above command line accordingly)
 3. y...@yourmachine:~$ cd local
 4. y...@yourmachine:~$ tar xovzf lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz
This will create a new sub-directory under ~/local and will unpack
the source files for lyx.
 4. y...@yourmachine:~$ cd lyx-1.6.5

 Compiling
 =

 1. y...@yourmachine:~$ ./autogen.sh
Check the output - if it says something is missing, then use
apt-get to install it.
 2. y...@yourmachine:~$ ./configure --with-version-suffix=165
We give it a different suffix so that it doesn't conflict with your
existing LyX installation. You can use both the new version and the
previously installed version.

Check the output - if it says something is missing, then install
using apt-get. Repeat items 1 and 2.
 3. y...@yourmachine:~$ make
Depending on your machine, this may take some time. If there is an
error, then read the output. You probably need to use apt-get to
install some new piece of software.
 4. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo make install prefix=/usr/local/stow/lyx165

wolfgang:/home/wolfgang# make install prefix=/usr/local/stow/lyx165
make: *** Keine Regel, um »install« zu erstellen. Schluss.
(no rule to produce 'install'. end)

ps: I used su instead of sudo.

 5. y...@yourmachine:~$ cd /usr/local/stow
 6. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo stow lyx165

 Running the new version
 ===

 y...@yourmachine:~$ lyx165

You can also make a launcher for the new version by right clicking
on the panel. The command should be /usr/local/bin/lyx165.

You can also run your old LyX version using the simple command:

 y...@yourmachine:~$ lyx

In a launcher, the command /usr/local/bin/lyx will run the old version.

Please let me know if there is any problem with any of the steps here.
 Cheers,
 Alan

thanks Allan

Hi Alan,
Thanks lot, I am really grateful to inform you that the way you mentioned
below really worked well. It worked in my computer ubuntu 8.04 LTS, except a
problem of Latex style and layout problem. I think it is a slight one, I
could install it.
Thanks again for your detailed instructions.

Hello Weidong,
Here is a short Howto that I wrote for compiling LyX and using GNU Stow
to keep it out of the way of your existing LyX installation.

-

===
Compiling LyX on Ubuntu or Debian
===

  And using GNU Stow

Getting the tools
=

1. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get build-dep lyx
2. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get install stow
3. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo apt-get install automake
4. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo atp-get install autoconf

This should get most or all of what you need. There may be a
substantial download if you have no building tools already installed.

Getting LyX
===

You want the "source code".

Download the source tarball from http://www.lyx.org/Download. The
downloaded file will be named lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz.

Local directory
===

1. y...@yourmachine:~$ mkdir local
2. y...@yourmachine:~$ mv lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz ./local
(Note: the tarball may be downloaded to some special directory,
usually either Desktop or Downloads. You may need to adjust the
above command line accordingly)
3. y...@yourmachine:~$ cd local
4. y...@yourmachine:~$ tar xovzf lyx-1.6.5.tar.gz
This will create a new sub-directory under ~/local and will unpack
the source files for lyx.
4. y...@yourmachine:~$ cd lyx-1.6.5

Compiling
=

1. y...@yourmachine:~$ ./autogen.sh
Check the output - if it says something is missing, then use
apt-get to install it.
2. y...@yourmachine:~$ ./configure --with-version-suffix=165
We give it a different suffix so that it doesn't conflict with your
existing LyX installation. You can use both the new version and the
previously installed version.

Check the output - if it says something is missing, then install
using apt-get. Repeat items 1 and 2.
3. y...@yourmachine:~$ make
Depending on your machine, this may take some time. If there is an
error, then read the output. You probably need to use apt-get to
install some new piece of software.
4. y...@yourmachine:~$ sudo make install prefix=/usr/local/stow/lyx165

wolfgang:/home/wolfgang# make install prefix=/usr/local/stow/lyx165
make: *** Keine Regel, um »install« zu erstellen. Schluss.
(no rule to produce 'install'. end)

ps: I used su instead of sudo.

Unless you are compiling from your home directory, which isn't really a
good idea, then you need to get into the directory where the sources
live, which in these instructions would be ~/local/lyx165.

2010-03-30 Thread Typhoon

I have tidied up the instructions (including a nice suggestion from
Wolfgang) and posted the tutorial on the Wiki under the Tips/Compiling
section:

http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/Compiling#sTips.Compiling_9

It would be nice if someone could include a yum/whatever equivalent for
the Debian

apt-get build-dep lyx

command.

I also included a brief separate section on the virtues of using GNU
Stow to install the compiled software.

Cheers,
Alan

Hi,

Your first mail didn't contain a lot of details, so it was difficult to
guess.

I think it's strange that you use the windows.h file from
lyx-windows-deps-msvc2008\include. windows.h should be available on
your system.

What happens if you remove it from this directory ?

I use(d) Visual C++ Express too and I have only aspell.h, iconv.h,
libintl.h, zconf.h and zlib.h in this directory (and some hunspell stuff).

If you can't work it out, you might want to try using CMake.

Anyway, Qt 4.3.0 supports a Vista style, so if you have Vista and like

The qt3 frontend that we had in LyX 1.4 has indeed been abandoned for

The minimum supported version is Qt4.0.2 I think. Of course you won't

I meant source compatible. IIRC, Jurgen managed to compile LyX with
4.0 or 4.0.1... But you're right we've decided that the minimum
supported version will be 4.1.0.

Yes, I have tried to compile it before reading the INSTALL file as usually for
LyX 1.4 series. After getting an error, I read the INSTALL file which is the
new LyX version can be installed only with qt4.

 What OS/distribution are you using?

I use SuSE 10.0. I have tried to find suitable qt4 rpms packages for this
version of SuSE but not yet found.

Thank you for your response,
