Are you using WinXP? If yes, this is a known bug that was detailled in

After these problems I will stop testing 1.6 because I need to actually get
some work done. Now if I could just convert my document back..

Try the Prefs dialog work around. In general 1.6rc is pretty stable but
that is not a dot zero yet so, unless you know what you are doing, I
suggest to keep using 1.5.x.

Besides the bug mentionend in another reply: The default settings will
use the extension .lyx15 for the exported file and the file-open
dialogue in LyX-1.5 will not show it, as it expects a .lyx extension.

My next problem is the bold font toggling in math mode. ctrl-B generates a
default \mathsymbol{} command which is wrong wrong wrong!

No, not generally!

A bold math character should almost always be non-italicized. The one
exception may be Greek characters, but only because Latex has issues
with that anyway. The reason is that a bold letter represents a vector
or matrix, which should never be in italic font.

The `International Union of Pure and Applied Physics` (IUPAP) and other

IMHO it should be configurable via a preferences setting that a new
LyX version uses by default the file format of the previous one, still
named with the extension .lyx. (MS Word has such an option, which is
quite useful.)

Of course, using the old file format may imply that some new features

Nevertheless, it would be of tremendous help to restrict newer LyX

Feel free to file an enhancement bug about this. Whether anyone would
implement it, I don't know. Part of the difficulty is that writing old
versions is done in a very different way from writing new versions. The
core LyX sources only know about the current version. The conversion is
done with a python program called lyx2lyx which can, by the way, be
called from outside LyX.

I do like the new features and would love to continue working with

As for the export files bug, so far I have discovered that the export

As for the keymapping issue. I see that one can map keys to lyx

keyboard mapped. I will scour the documentation for that. Also I
suspect there is a way to make ctrl-B toggle like it used to, but I'm
not sure how. There wasn't anything in the keyboard mapping
documentation to suggest it.

Here at Debian Linux; LyX 1.5.6 the file-open dialogue does

* NOT show *.lyx15 with the default filter
  setting "LyX files (*.lyx)",

* show them (of course) with "All files (*)".

But in the second case also all sort of irrelevant files are shown.

I solved this (partially) with changing the settings under
Tools>Preferences>File Handling>File formats>
Format: Lyx 1.5 > Extension
from lyx15 to 15.lyx.

IMHO it should be configurable via a preferences setting that a new
LyX version uses by default the file format of the previous one, still
named with the extension .lyx. (MS Word has such an option, which is
quite useful.)

Of course, using the old file format may imply that some new features
are not available or do not become permanent in the saved file.
Nevertheless, it would be of tremendous help to restrict newer LyX
versions to the older format -- especially during transition times
(e.g., while trying out release candidates or when not all co-authors
have already updated to the newest version.)

I agree with this. The tab key has been taken over by the (VERY NICE)

This is a known issue, and there has been a lot of work on it in the

Feel free to file an enhancement bug about this. Whether anyone would
implement it, I don't know. Part of the difficulty is that writing old
versions is done in a very different way from writing new versions. The
core LyX sources only know about the current version. The conversion is
done with a python program called lyx2lyx which can, by the way, be
called from outside LyX.

I do like the new features and would love to continue working with
1.60cr2 if there are some workarounds. If there is a way to map ctrl-B
back to \mathbf{} instead of \boldsymbol{} it would do it for me.

As for the export files bug, so far I have discovered that the export
function sends the files to a subdirectory in the temp folder. I
haven't tried the workaround you mentioned here, though I'm not sure if
I completely understand what you are saying.

As for the keymapping issue. I see that one can map keys to lyx
commands, one of which is something like font-bold. However how do you
change the behavior of the lyx command? Perhaps there is another lyx
command that allows for generic latex macro substitution that could be
keyboard mapped. I will scour the documentation for that. Also I
suspect there is a way to make ctrl-B toggle like it used to, but I'm
not sure how. There wasn't anything in the keyboard mapping
documentation to suggest it.

Thanks,
Matt

Try the Prefs dialog work around. In general 1.6rc is pretty stable

I suggest to keep using 1.5.x.

This is a bug connected with the preferences file, which you'll find in
your local LyX directory. Do Tools>Preferences, and then hit OK or Save
or whatever. That should do it.

you change the behavior of the lyx command?

You can't really do that. You can just change which command it gets
mapped to. But try this. Map Ctrl-Shift-B to "math-insert \mathbf". It
won't toggle, but it doesn't really need to in math. You can just hit
spacebar when you are done with bold, and that will take you out of bold.

I suspect there is a way to make ctrl-B toggle like it used to, but

This is a problem in the source code somewhere.

I've been trying to use the candidate release for 1.6. While there are some
nice new features, like the ability to cut and paste graphics there are some
changes and perhaps bugs which negatively impact lyx.

My first pet peeve is that the export document command doesn't appear to
generate any output, unless it's doing so in an unknown directory different
from the directory of the .lyx source. In particular I'm trying to convert
a lyx 1.6 file back into a 1.5.3 file so that I can run a more 'stable'

My next problem is the bold font toggling in math mode. ctrl-B generates a
default \mathsymbol{} command which is wrong wrong wrong! A bold math
character should almost always be non-italicized. The one exception may be
Greek characters, but only because Latex has issues with that anyway. The
reason is that a bold letter represents a vector or matrix, which should
never be in italic font. Instead the old behavior of using \mathbf{} is
probably the correct one. I am also annoyed by the 'feature' that ctrl-B
no longer toggles bold on and off. How do I undo a bold or revert back to
normal font? I need to be able to toggle back and forth with one keystroke
or I literally don't want anything to do with the program. It's just too
inefficient for maths that contain vectors or matrices.

My next peeve that I've found is that tab no longer navigates through the
cells in an eqnarray. I haven't tried it with tables yet, but if it has the
same behavior there, that would also be bad.

After these problems I will stop testing 1.6 because I need to actually get
