I know I can type latex directly and get the result visually. But I could not find a way to go back to the source after I write a formula the first time. All editing then has to be done visually, which I personally do not like much. I was wondering if there was a way to 'toggle' between the visual representation and the latex source of a formula. By the way, I'm using version 1.3.7. and I do not seem to have an entry called 'Source' in the 'View' menu. Is this correct? Anyhow, Siegfried's workaround does not sound very convenient to me. Thanks, Joris

If you don't like the math editor at all - consider using ERT boxes instead. There you type your math as $\alpha=1$ and it stays that way too. If view-dvi is too slow (big document), consider using the math editor to check formulas. Copy the formula out from the ERT box, mark and hit ctrl+M to see if everything is ok. Then backspace and delete the test formula. Helge Hafting

The actual version of LyX is 1.5.2. regards Uwe Prior to 1.5.2, you can go to Preferences - File formats, select LaTeX, and assign a text viewer program in the viewer slot. (On Windows, I like the free TextView program.) Save the change, and make sure that the app you selected is on your system path (or else provide the full path to it). I think you'll need to restart LyX. Thereafter, you should have LaTeX as an option on the View menu. Unlike the 1.5.2 feature, this will not take you directly to the position in the source code where your cursor lies; it will open the entire .tex file. Still, I got good use out of it prior to 1.5.2. /Paul

You can use the possibility to view the LaTeX code and copy back from the code window into the lyx window if you want to edit the latex code. I tried it on Windows XP, and it works ( ctrl-c - ctrl-V to copy-paste the LaTeX code and ctrl-M to convert it into math. Siegfried
