Sans Serif Font For Quote paragraphs

2008-08-18 Thread Louis A. Turk
How can I change the fonts to sans serif (and change the font size) for
the Quote and Quotation Paragraphs?

At present in document/fonts I have the following settings:

Default Family: Roman
Roman : Latin Modern Roman
Sans Serif: Latin Modern Sans
Typewriter: Latin Modern Typewriter

But sans serif fonts are not used at all. If I change Default Family to
Sans Serif then only sans serif fonts are used. So I know the sans serif
fonts are available.

Chapter Style

2008-08-18 Thread Louis A. Turk
I've just learned how to use the Demo2 chapter style of the Memoir
Class. However, I would like to make three changes:

1. Use a smaller font for the chapter number (like is shown in
memoir-chapterstyles.pdf).

2. Use less space between the chapter number and the rule underneath it
(like is shown in memoir-chapterstyles.pdf).

3. Center the chapter title (instead of having it flush right).

Can someone tell me how to make these changes?

0xfeff

2008-09-14 Thread Louis A. Turk
I have a large Nota Bene word processor file which was edited by a
friend (not sure with what program, but not Nota Bene). I exported this
file from Nota Bene as a utf-8 text file, then imported it into Lyx as a
Plain Text file, and edited it using Lyx. No problems up to this point.
The problems began when I tried to view it as a pdf file. I get this
error message: Could not find LaTeX command for character '' (code
point 0xfeff). 0xfeff is the Unicode zero width non-break space
character. I've not been able to find that character in the file even
using Emacs hexl-mode. Any ideas about how to solve this?

Interesting facts about find and replace

2008-09-15 Thread Louis A. Turk
In trying to find the character 0xfeff I've learned a few interesting
things about Lyx's find and replace.

---At least in some cases 0xfeff is the opening quotation character for
some word processors.

---When imported into Lyx this character is converted into code. For
example these foreign quotation marks around the word simplicity look
like this when opened in a text editor:

\begin_inset Quotes eld
\end_inset

simplicity
\begin_inset Quotes erd
\end_inset

So, unlike regular Lyx quotation marks, for these foreign quotation
marks what is shown on screen and what is found in the source code in a
Lyx file is completely different.

---The way I discovered this is that I noticed one of these foreign
quotation marks in the Lyx file. It is smaller then the Lyx quotation
marks. But when I copied that quotation character into the Lyx find
window it failed to find the character in the file. INSTEAD Lyx converts
the character into a normal Lyx quotation character and that is what is
found. So, the Lyx find and replace feature is not useful in this
situation---it would be very helpful if this were fixed! Therefore, I
looked at the file using Emacs and discovered the above code.

---So, I decided to try to use the find and replace in Emacs. This also
did not work because changing 0xfeff to globally messes up a bunch of
boxes (probably 50 or more) which I placed in the file using Lyx. I have
already edited the whole file (a book) in Lyx getting it into the proper
format and trying to manually replace any foreign looking characters.
Obviously, I have missed at least one (actually I know there are many)
as the file still cannot be converted to pdf. I then tried to search
through the file manually, but still failed as the situation proved to
be even more complex than I thought, and more complex than I have time
to explain right now.

Memoir ruled headers

2010-02-04 Thread Louis A. Turk
I'm trying to use the ruled pagestyle. The memoir manual describes it
like this:

ruled: The footer contains the folio at the outside. The header on verso
pages contains the chapter number and title in small caps at the
outside; on recto pages the section title is typeset at the outside
using the normal font. A line is drawn underneath the header.

The problem I'm having is that the section title is not appearing on the
recto pages. The header is just a rule, with nothing over it. Any idea
why the section title is not there?

 Hi Louis,
There are discussions in the archives about this. Two schools of

I'm attaching a template that I have worked on. It's not perfect, but

As I say, it isn't completely finished, so you will want to check

I received a note from Jens Berger stating that jurabib is no longer
being maintained. His website says this:

jurabib is freezed at stage 0.61beta now due to spare time while
working as a physician and being father of three children. If
you are interested to become the new jurabib maintainer, please
contact me.

Take a serious look at the biblatex package. It is an amazing
new tool without the mistakes that were made in the early years
of jurabib.

Does anyone know anything about biblatex?
Can it be used with LyX?
Does it support full citations in footnotes? Ibid.?

I get this
error message: "Could not find LaTeX command for character '' (code
point 0xfeff). 0xfeff is the Unicode zero width non-break space
character. I've not been able to find that character in the file even
using Emacs hexl-mode. Any ideas about how to solve this?

Interesting facts about find and replace

2008-09-15 Thread Louis A. Turk
In trying to find the character "0xfeff" I've learned a few interesting
things about Lyx's find and replace.

---At least in some cases 0xfeff is the opening quotation character for
some word processors.

---When imported into Lyx this character is converted into code. For
example these foreign quotation marks around the word "simplicity" look
like this when opened in a text editor:

This also
did not work because changing 0xfeff to " globally messes up a bunch of
boxes (probably 50 or more) which I placed in the file using Lyx. I have
already edited the whole file (a book) in Lyx getting it into the proper
format and trying to manually replace any foreign looking characters.

Louis

PS I'm using Lyx 1.6.4. When will Ubuntu make 1.6.5 available?

2010-02-14 Thread Louis A. Turk
Hi fellow lyx users,

I have the body of a book formatted beautifully with lyx using the
Memoir Class, but I'm having many problems formatting the front matter.
The first page is blank (is this normal?), the even numbered folios are
missing, and there is one too many pages between the front matter and
main body.

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/UsingMemoirInLyX links to the following two
documents that are supposed to help, but for some reason I can't get
them to download. And I haven't been able to find them anywhere else.

Does anyone know of a different source for these documents?

Are there other sample documents or instructions available that show how
to format the front matter when using Memoir?

Can LyX do this?

2001-10-06 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi Lyx experts,

I am seriously considering installing Lyx on my Windows 2000 machine to

which NB and PM cannot seem to do:

1. Brochures on legal size paper, landscape orientation, 8 snaking columns
(4 on each side) with citations and footnotes at the bottom of each column,
and headers above each column except the first one.

2. Turabian style manual, with extensive modifications of spacing, type
styles, notes format, etc., for self-publishing of books.

3. Mixed Greek, Hebrew, and English text in most of the above mentioned
documents.

4. Easy conversion of the above documents to PDF.

5. I want to be able to set up templates so that I can concentrate on
writing instead of formatting.

Is all this possible with Lyx?

Is there perhaps a pdf document created from Lyx that would illustrate some
pages like or similar to those described above?

6. Is MikTeX or fpTeX the best Win32 port of LaTeX?

7. Will XFree86 allow me to cut and paste between Lyx and Win32
programs? How does it compare to Starnet's XWin32 x-server?

Many thanks for your time in answering.

themselves from memory when lyx is closed. Sometimes I have to manually
remove 10 or more copies by hand. Is there any cure for this?

Lyx and SUSE Linux

2002-04-05 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi,

I am considering purchasing SUSE Linux 8.0 Professional when it come out
this month. It is supposed to come with Lyx, and is supposed to be easy to
install. Since I know very little about Linux, I am hoping that Lyx will
work right off without a lot of configuring which I might not know how to
do. Does anyone out there have experience with Lyx on SUSE Linux? Am I on
the right track? Would some other version of Linux be better for running Lyx?

Hi Kathryn, James, Roy, Ame, R. Josh, Herbert, Holger, Clodoaldo,
  ABe, Peter, and Andre,

Many, many thanks for your comments about Lyx and SUSE Linux and Debian
Linux. It sounds like you are all having good success with Lyx on both
SUSE and Debian Linux.

Now I have anther question, but I will start another thread for it.

I very much appreciate all of you who have taken time to tell me your
experience with Lyx on Linux.

English, Greek, Hebrew, and Unicode.

2002-04-08 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Dear Lyx users,

I am wanting to get set up to write books in the English language, but with
some Greek and Hebrew mixed in with the English both in the main text and
also in the footnotes. Can anyone advise me how to get set up for
this? Is it possible and advisable to use unicode fonts? I was told
some things on this list that lead me to believe that unicode fonts are the
way to go, but I haven't been able to get set up properly on my Win2k
machine. That is why I'm intending to install Linux and LyX on another
computer.

Also, am I correct in believing that each character in a unicode font is
two bytes wide no matter what accent marks it may or may not have?

personal LyX directory

2001-10-19 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Friends,

I have finally got LyX installed on my Win2k machine, but when I start it
up it asks me the following question:

"You don't have a personal LyX directory. It is needed to keep your own
configuration. Should I try to set it up for you (recommended)?"

I click yes, but nothing happens. I tried going to
Edit/Preferences/Inputs/Default path, but the information I enter there
does not seem to help. Perhaps I need an example of how to enter the
information?

Printing problem.

2001-10-22 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Friends,

I now have everything installed, but obviously not properly. When I click
View/DVI I get the message: Can not view file: Error while execution
windvi-paper us 'file.dvi'

Windvi (SUPELEC 0.67.2) does open however, and displays the file beautifully.

But when I try to print to paper the type is so big that only the upper
left quarter of it fits on the page.

How can I fix this?

Greek and LaTeX2HTML

2001-10-25 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi everyone,

I have recently successfully installed fpTeX, Cygwin-XFree86 and LyX on my
Win2K machine thanks to help from several people. I am still not
completely set up however.

1. I write English documents with long quotes in Greek and Hebrew. I
cannot find any information on how to do this with LyX. Can someone
provide links to the proper documentation?

2. I have not been successful in installing LaTex2HTML. I downloaded
latex2html-2k.1beta.tar.gz, but the documentation that comes with it is
rather unclear (perhaps because instructions for OS/2 are mixed in with the
Windows instructions). Also, there seem to be files missing in the
download. Can anyone guide me in the proper direction?

3. Are pre-compiled binaries of pybliographer or some other bibtex
database manager available for Cygwin? If yes, can someone provide links
to the proper web page.

4. Does anyone know of a textbase program that will interface with the
Cygwin port of Lyx, something like Orbis on the Notabene word processor?

Thanks,
Louis

Multi-Language on Cygwin Lyx

2001-10-31 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Is anyone out there set up to switch easily between English, Greek and
Hebrew in the same document using lyx on a cygwin setup on win2k operating
system? If so, would you please send me a copy of your lyxrc file by email
attachment?

Also, how do I install unicode fonts?

If I do my work using unicode fonts, will I be able to convert them to pdf
and html in the unusual way?

Thanks,
Louis

Another Bibtex Problem

2001-11-03 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi friends,

Another newbie problem. I now have bibtex working so that I can enter
citations. However, when I "view" the document, where the citation numbers
should be there are only question marks, and the citations do not appear at
the bottom of the page.

How can I correct this?

Book Class Modifications

How can I change the book class so that

1. quotes are in a different and smaller font, and are not right indented.
2. chapter headings are centered.

Can LyX do this?

2001-10-06 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi Lyx experts,

I am seriously considering installing Lyx on my Windows 2000 machine to
replace Notabene and Pagemaker, provided Lyx can do some things I need done
which NB and PM cannot seem to do:

Sincerely,
Louis

fpTeX install problem.

2001-10-13 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi everybody,

I am trying to install fpTeX on my Win2k machine, so that I can run LyX. I
have downloaded all the files. When I now try to run TeXSetup.exe I get
the following error message:

Error: Can't find the TPM directory.

What is wrong, and how do I correct it?

Thanks for your help?

XFree86 configuration problem

2001-10-16 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my Win2K computer prepared to install lyx. I've just
installed Cygwin and XFree86. All seemed to go well. However, when I run
XFree86 I get the following message:

--XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root.

Then the XFree86 window comes up for a moment, then closes.

How do I correct this?

Bibtex with Cygwin Lyx

2001-11-30 Thread Dr. Louis A. Turk

Hi lyxperts,

I have bibtex set up so that I am able to insert citations into a
file. However, when I view the file using dvi or postscript the citations
are replaced by a question mark. I am using the plain.bst and book.bib
files that came with fptex. What is wrong, and how do I fix it?

(Yes, this is the same problem I was having before. I tried all the advice
that was given, but the problem persists. Of course, it could be I didn't
understand some of the advice.)

Thanks,
Louis
