Re: [M100] NEC 8201 rechargeable battery packs and BERG jacks

2018-10-31 Thread Anthony Coghlan
Thanks, everyone - if I can find a reasonably priced rechargeable pack, I
might do this. Otherwise, I’ll just keep charged NiMH nearby as spares.

On the 8201’s BERG serial jacks - any experiences? Perhaps these were a
way to network 8201 machines together.

Best wishes,
Anthony

You might also want to check out a set of NiZn batteries; I've mentioned them
here before but don't know if anyone ever tried them.

They have a nominal voltage of 1.6V and solve the early shutdown problem,
usually with a capacity of 2500 to 2800 mWh (equivalent to approx. 1500 to 1700
mAh).

They do require a special charger though, and trickle-charging is not
recommended.

I purchased them through eBay. But I went back this morning to see if the
seller was still selling them and they are no longer listed. They are 480 ma
cells so two banks gives 960ma. There are other sellers. Most from China but
you are looking 1/3AA batteries with tabs. Sometimes you can find them stacked
as 3 in one like I did and that saves some time.

Is there any simple mod (such as the added resistor near the batteries for
the M100) that allows the 8201 to charge rechargeable batteries in a standard
battery pack when plugged in?

Thanks, everyone. Kurt, that looks really good. I’m not familiar with
those smaller batteries. How or where do you get them?

Is there any simple mod (such as the added resistor near the batteries for
the M100) that allows the 8201 to charge rechargeable batteries in a
standard battery pack when plugged in?

This is what a 10 cell battery pack looks like.

I have refurbished 4 NEC battery packs. One I did with 4 NiCad
batteries. the other with4 NiMH. Both charge and work fine, but exhibit
the problem where the low battery light comes one after about 45 minutes
even though there are hours left in the pack. This is true of the
original NiCad batteries as well. The other two I built up using ten 1/3 AA NiMH
batteries. Basically two
banks of 5 batteries. I really like the way these work. The only problem
I have had was that on the initial charges, the low battery light never
came on and the unit just died when the batteries were too low. But
after doing three or four charge/discharge cycles, I get a low battery
light when there are about 30 minutes of change left. These are the two
packs that stay in my units almost all the time and I will probably
rebuild my other 4 battery packs this way.

As far as I'm aware, no NiMH manufacturer recommends

trickle-charging; the OEM rechargeable pack used NiCd,

not NiMH. Using NiMH in the regular pack works fine, and

if you charge the cells individually in a smart charger like the

Maha C-9000 you'll get quite a few more cycles, IME.

[M100] NEC 8201 rechargeable battery packs and BERG jacks

2018-10-28 Thread Anthony Coghlan
Hi - hope everyone is having a good weekend. Has anyone ever used the
DuPont BERG jacks on the NEC-8201? The manual describes them as 19,200
baud serial ports, basically. Wondering for what they might be useful.

Also, does anyone have experience refurbishing a rechargeable battery pack
for the 8201 with modern rechargeable batteries? Does this work and does
the battery pack still charge well from the original power supply, despite
much higher modern capacities? Is one better off just using rechargeable
batteries in a regular battery pack? Is there a way to adapt a regular
pack to charge rechargeable batteries? Thanks - lots of questions...

Best wishes,
Anthony
