Top Ten list of tools and techniques I used to successfully complete my first college semester as a blind student

2011-12-17 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello All,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone on this list who shared your school
experiences with me and offered good advice on tools and techniques. Now that
my semester is over, I want to give back some information about some of those
tools and techniques in hopes somebody else might find them useful. I just
completed my first college semester in over 20 years, my first as a blind
person, and I'm proud to say I did very well in both of my classes. I've now
enrolled as a full time student for the Spring 2012 semester with an estimated
graduation date of June, 2013, only 29 years after I took my first college
course. .

I was able to perform all necessary computer-related functions using my Macbook
Air and iPhone 4. Half way through the semester I installed Windows 7 in a
FUsion VM just in case, but never even got around to installing NVDA because I
did not encounter any accessibility roadblocks that couldn't be handled on my
MBA or iPhone. Here is my "Top 10" list of tools and techniques I used this
semester.

1. Pages on the Mac. This past SUmmer I took a series of Pages lessons via
Skype with Anne and Archie Robertson. (For those who are new to the list, Anne
is an assistant moderator here.) The lessons were informative and enjoyable, as
Anne & Archie are a great team with a wealth of experience working with Apple
products and accessibility tools and techniques. During the semester I wrote
several dozen essays, most of them in Pages, and never once had a problem
creating a document that met the requirements of my professors. My university
is standardized almost exclusively on Windows, MS Office, and Outlook, yet I
never had a problem opening any Office documents in Preview, TextEdit or Pages
and was easily able to use Outlook Web Access via Safari on my Macbook Air to
send & receive emails and attachments.

2. The "ABBYY FineReader Express" Mac App. I used ABBYY extensively this
semester. One of my textbooks was only available in print, but I was able to
scan important chunks of the book using the flatbed scanner on my HP PhotoSmart
C6100 MFP attached via USB to my Macbook Air. I scanned using Vuescan and then
let ABBYY do the OCR into an RTF file. I also used ABYY to OCR graphic PDF
files such as those output from OSX's "save to PDF" print function as noted
below in the section where I talk about textbooks. And of course, I received a
number of incorrectly created PDF files for such things as class syllabi and
tuition invoices, all of which ABBYY handled quite nicely.

3. The "Flashcards++" IOS App. I made extensive use of the excellent and fully
VO-accessible IOS App named "Flashcards++." I posted a review of the app on
applevis if you're interested, but I'll just add here that this app blows me
away every time I use it. The simplicity of the interface hides a tremendous
wealth of options. There are numerous ways to import cards you've created, such
as via a simple CSV created in TextEdit, or via the major flashcard sites such
as quizlet.com. You can also create the cards manually right on the device and
can edit any of the cards you've imported or created. Once you've created your
cards, you have access to a vast number of ways to display the cards, and the
built-in logic really worked well to focus on the cards I was having difficulty
learning. While the app is great for general purpose learning, it was actually
developed by a student of languages and includes tools to handle many
languages. You can select a different language for the fr
ont and back of each card and, if you don't want to rotor between VO voices to
hear correct pronunciation, a button is provided to speak the words via a TTS
engine hosted somewhere on the Internet.

4. The "Speak It" IOS App. This App was recommended by Esther, and I used it
more and more as the semester progressed. Essentially, speak It will read a
block of text pasted into the App, and, unlike VO, will continue to read it
aloud even when the iPhone has been locked. I would often cut and paste
chapters from an OCR'd textbook into Speak It, lock the iPhone screen, stick
the phone in my pocket, and listen to the information over and over again as I
went about other tasks.

5. The "ClearRecord" IOS App. I used this App on my iPhone to record every
lecture this semester. It somehow manages to do a good job of blocking out some
of the extraneous classroom noises while capturing the important stuff. One
shortcoming of this App is it's weak playback controls and options. I worked
around this issue by using iTunes on the Mac to tag the recordings as
audiobooks for playback via other Apps.

6. 11 inch Macbook Air. Most days I walk several miles to and from classes and
the 2.5 pound weight of my MBA is a blessing on my skinny frame, especially
on those days when I'm also packing an umbrella, water bottle, towel, dog
kibble, etc. My MBA has the i7 CPU and was able to handle everything I threw at
it.

Thanks for that Esther, I will definitely check out these recommendations. I
only want something really simple in terms of ftp, so this might be the go.

Thanks again

Text document reader

2011-12-17 Thread Catherine Golding
The other day I was introduced to Abbyfein, a scanner/text reader that
works particularly well with a scanner, converting the scanned material to
text. The scanner recommended was the Canon, but I've forgotten the exact
model, but I do recall it was under $100.00.

Cyberduck [was Re: accessible FTP client]

2011-12-17 Thread Esther
Hi Paula,

I agree that Transmit is worth it, but if you want a free FTP client that is
accessible, a number of people use Cyberduck. I'll point you to the download
link at the MacUpdate site, since the version at the Mac App store cost $23.99:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8392/cyberduck
It's also possible to just use the Terminal app, and type in command line
instructions to perform FTP and SFTP operations, but you probably won't want to
do that.

Incidentally, an alternative accessible and free thesaurus software application
for Mac OS X that you can use is Nisus Thesaurus:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nisus-thesaurus/id471448642?mt=12

This is from the developers of Nisus Writer Pro, an accessible word processor.
To use this software, highlight the word that you want to look up, e.g., by
holding down the Shift key when you are positioned at the start of a word and
then pressing Option+right arrow to select the word. Then either use the
shortcut to look up the word in Nisus Thesaurus, which is Command+<, or else
navigate to the app on the menu bar with Control+F2 or VO-M, arrow right to
the application menu, then arrow down and press "s" to go to the Services
option. Right arrow to the Services submenu and navigate to "Look up selection
in Thesaurus", which will be listed with the shortcut assignment of Command+<.
Either press return to bring up the Thesaurus window for the highlighted word,
or use the Command+< shortcut. You can press escape to dismiss the Thesaurus
window. The shortcut or the service menu entry for "Look up selection in
Thesaurus" will not show up unless you have first selected a wo
rd. This works in all the regular applications such as TextEdit, Mail, etc.

Welcome to the list.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Discover music application

2011-12-17 Thread Sarah Alawami
Yeah you can only ask for a refund once. and that sucks. but there ya go.

Look for a contact link if you can and if not sign up for the forums if you can
do that.

Good luck.

Re: Discover music application

2011-12-17 Thread Paula Hobley
Hi there

I've had a look at the support page, and I can't find a spot where I can
contact the developer. This is all new to me and am still getting my head
around it. Apple refunded my money for another app but told me they would not
be able to do this if applications weren't accessible, but suggested I contact
the developers.

Thanks for your help.

Take care

Re: Discover music application

2011-12-17 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Paula!
First welcome to the list!
I do believe that you might be able to get money back!
I think the procedure is to contact the dev!
And ask if accessibility could be added and if they reply no or something like
that then you can tell Apple and they should refund your money!

I had a go at posting something about it. I hope the information I provided
is correct. It showed up in my twitter as being posted but I didn't provide
a lot of info about it.

Go to www.applevis.com and follow the instructions. You should create an
account before doing so but if you skip this you can post as an
unregistered member and the moderators will approve the review before it

Discover music application

2011-12-17 Thread Paula Hobley
Hi there

I was wondering, does anybody know if the discover music application is
accessible? I love to discover new artists and this looks like a good app
but don't want to pay the money if it isn't accessible seeing as Apple
doesn't refund your money.

Thanks for your help with this.

Cheers

Paula

RE: New Member Welcome and question about Pages

2011-12-17 Thread Paula Hobley
Hi there

Thank you for the very warm welcome. I'm a total novice when it comes to
the mac, although I am learning. I just purchased a MacBook Pro 2 weeks
ago. I was wondering, I have purchased pages. When I am in a pages
document and bring up the inspector to get a word count of my document, I
can't get rid of the inspector screen and I can't use my document. I have
tried pressing escape, and I have tried closing the document and exiting and
re-entering pages and don't have any joy. Does anybody know how to fix this
issue?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Paula

I wonder if it will lead to facial recognition, so it will say mom on left

Apropos of this thread, I saw a lovely app at the recent Assets conference in
Dundee which assisted blind photography. Hasn't been released yet but some
people are doing some very interesting things in this domain.

Go to www.applevis.com and follow the instructions. You should create an

Collins Thesaurus of the English Language inaccessible app

2011-12-17 Thread Paula Hobley
Hi there
I just thought I would let you all know that the application "Collins
Thesaurus of the English Language" is not accessible. I thought one of you
might like to post this on the apple-vis directory of accessible
applications. I don't know how to do this.

Thanks

Paula

VO helping me center a face in my iPhone's viewfinder

2011-12-17 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Folks,

I imagine most of you already know about this feature, but I don't recall
knowing about it until this afternoon when I stumbled upon it completely by
accident. I think this is pretty darn cool.

I was lying on the floor with the dog snoring against my left side and the cat
purring against my right, so I thought I'd hold the iPhone camera at arm's
length and try to snap a photo. I launched the native camera app on my iphone 4
running IOS 5, put it in photo mode with auto flash and back-facing camera,
held it straight in front of me with the back-facing lens aimed in the general
direction of my face, and prepared to snap one of my standard off-center photos.

. Next thing I knew, VO started saying," One face, small face, near top edge."
I tilted the iPhone a bit and VO announced, "One face, small face, near left
edge. I kept tilting the phone until VO announce, "face centered." Then I moved
the camera closer to my face and VO announced, "One face, large face, face
centered."

I then switched cameras to the front camera and got the same results. I also
tried this in video mode but VO was silent.

Lastly, I tried aiming the back facing camera at my Black Lab's face but could
not get VO to recognize her. The cat decided she didn't want to be part of this
experiment and ran off somewhere.

I wonder what other IOS accessibility marvels I'm missing.

Cheers,
Bryan

New Member Welcome

2011-12-17 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hello everybody

It is traditional when new members join the Mac Access Dot Net email forum that
Gordon and I try to welcome the new member(s) personally. In keeping with that
tradition, we are delighted to welcome:
Paula Hobley
to our number. We are gratified by the fact that Mac Access is growing
globally. We hope that you will find Mac-Access@mac-access.net a pleasant,
friendly and worthwhile place to be.

In here you will find a wealth of knowledge, and people with a variety of skill
levels ranging from the total novice, to the application developers with
advanced skills. Then there are those who don't yet own a Mac, but have a keen
interest; and those who only use iOS devices but who are keen enthusiasts. We
hope you will feel free to post your questions and constructive comment,
whatever your skill levels may be. Be assured, there will be none of the
ridiculing and flaming which we know takes place in other groups. That kind of
behaviour is not tolerated in Mac-Access.

Anything Mac OS and iOS is on topic for this group. In the case of
virtualisation applications such as Fusion and Parallels Desktop, the
configuration of the applications themselves, plus the configuration of the
virtual machines is on topic. However, the configuration of Windows or any
other operating systems within that virtual machine is off topic. The exception
to that is if you're using another instance of OSX within the virtual machine.
This has always been a bit of a grey area; but we hope this clarifies the
position. We should also make clear the fact that Apple's Windows applications
are off topic for this group. This is strictly an iOS and Mac OS discussion
forum.

If you have any list-related queries, please do not hesitate to contact either
Gordon and myself, (the list owners), at , or one of
our very capable assistant list controllers; Anne Robertson,
 or Donal FitzPatrick., and
we will be happy to help you.

Once again Paula, a very warm welcome to the group. We hope you find your
membership an enjoyable, instructive and stimulating experience.

Finally, I would like to add that currently, we are offering all Mac-Access.
members the opportunity to purchase the Take Control Of Your Mac publications,
published by Tidbits.com, at an 80% discount.

If you want to know more, please contact the above support address. For a
listing of the books available please visit:

Hi Will,

I could be wrong about this, but I think you need to be plugged directly to the
Mac with your USB cable, as the download comes from iTunes. I do not think that
the Wi-Fi sync capabilities of IOS 5+ do not extend to the downloading of
content that is not already in your iTunes Library.
